FALL INTO FITNESS ith the change of seasons comes a renewed time to rethink and restart. The year is not over yet! You still have time to make good on this year's resolutions and to get a head start on your goals for 2013. These months are a great time to exercise outdoors and enjoy cooler temperatures. Discover park trails and take in some new scenery, whether you're walking, hiking, biking, rowing, or enjoying any other outdoor activity. Try kayaking or canoeing for an excellent whole-body workout and a great change of pace. Remember, it doesn't have to seem like exercise to be a great workout. Even raking leaves or doing outdoor yard work is a great way to get the heart pumping and burn calories. Are you geared up for the fall premieres of your favorite television shows? While you watch, do standing lunges, triceps dips off the couch, or lift weights. During commercials, do push-ups, planks, or stretch. In a one-hour show, you probably have close to 20 minutes worth of commercials when you could be working out. The best way to enjoy fall is to exercise outdoors, but it is getting darker earlier and staying dark later in the morning, so be smart and safe. Wear reflective clothing or carry a flashlight. When cycling, affix a light to your helmet or bike. If possible, use trails or a local school track to avoid vehicle traffic. If you must use a street with vehicle traffic, try to work out at the same time every day, so drivers get used to seeing you. When exercising outside, layer your clothing. Before your body warms up, you may feel chilled, but once the blood gets pumping, you'll feel overdressed. Fall is the time to rejuvenate the body, mind and spirit. Get a massage after your run or take an additional 20 minutes to stretch and relax. Learn to meditate. Take an art or cooking class. Treat yourself, not just with exercise, but other activities that promote wellness, so you can feel good physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. People are motivated by different things. It's important to first discover what your individual goals are, whether it's losing weight, strengthening and toning, or preparing for a race. Creating a challenge for yourself will motivate you, as will encouragement and accountability. Then choose an activity that is in line with your goals and that you will enjoy doing because you will be more likely to keep it up. Remember that 65 percent of Americans are considered overweight (and unhealthy), so if you struggle with your nutrition and your fitness, you are not alone. Find a friend, a group, or a team to stay active with and hold each other accountable. In my experience, there truly is strength in numbers. By allowing others in to your fitness journey you will be setting yourself up for success. Get a jumpstart on your health and wellness goals for 2013 by falling in love with fitness this season. See health and fitness as a reward, not a chore. Treating your body with respect and focusing on a healthy lifestyle truly is a reward that keeps on giving in so many ways, for years to come.

EDITOR IN CHIEF’S NOTE MEMORIES OF PUMPKIN BEER ublishing a weekly magazine keeps you extremely busy and always thinking two or three issues ahead, while trying to finish and publish the magazine for the particular week you are working on. So your life – days, weeks, and months – can go by very fast. This week I was reminded of that when I went back to the Lost & Found Saloon and realized that five years had gone by since I set foot inside and KB, the owner, offered me my first glass of pumpkin beer – before Halloween 2007. The food at L&F Saloon is still as unique, handmade, fresh, and made to order today as it was five years ago when I first stepped into a place that reminded me of the Old West movies I used to watch with my dad. However, a lot has changed in the neighborhood. New development has brought many new restaurants to Midtown, Wynwood, and the Design District, and landlords now feel they can charge a lot more in rent, even though the economy is still slow and people are limiting their spending. Seven years after he first opened the Lost & Found Saloon at 185 NW 36th St. in Miami, KB is still serving that delectable pumpkin beer every Halloween season. He also continues to work very long hours, without any vacation time, to keep alive his dream of owning such a unique place just a couple of blocks away from the Midtown Miami Target. I encourage you to join the many locals, artists, truckers, and industry people who love a delectable meal and a fine selection of brews until the wee hours of the morning, and stop by to say hello to KB. Support his dream of owning his own business and bringing something different and special to Miami. On another note, this weekend Jesse Spencer and I attended Sparkle, the 16th Annual National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Miami Recognition Dinner. I am glad to report that this year's affair was as wonderful as ever! Over 800 guests helped raised more than $500,000 during a fabulous dinner, silent auction, and awards presentation. The LGBT community and its supporters came together to honor Matt Foreman and Elizabeth F. Schwartz for their contributions at the local, statewide, and national level, while also raising vital funding to benefit many organizations serving the Miami-Dade LGBT community. Cheers,

t’s that time of year when studios and distributors start their annual “bid for awards” by releasing their best films. Awards won and flashed in front of the public on any of the dozen awards shows increases a film’s possibility of earning big profits; that’s the real holy grail of the industry.

photos by Henry Perez Guests enjoyed a fabulous night at TWIST with delicious beats and a crowd that was sure to please. Seven different bars, stiff drinks, beautiful dancers, and, of course, the only place where there’s “Never a cover...Always a groove.”

The films are grouped to drive you into theaters and they are betting that some “great films” will put you in theater seats over and over again. The dearth of watchable films over the last two years has cost the industry billions of dollars and they hope the race to the end of the year will cure some of that. This year you’ll find a bit of everything. They’re shot gunning for your attention. And, there are some real gems among the films coming. OCTOBER: Seven Psychopaths - The misadventures of a struggling screenwriter (Colin Farrell) entangled in the LA underworld after his two oddball friends (Christopher Walken, Sam Rockwell) kidnap a gangster's (Woody Harrelson) beloved Shih Tzu. Cloud Atlas - The ambitious adaptation of David Mitchell’s novel, co-written/directed by Andy & Lana Wachowski (The Matrix) and Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run) that features six century-spanning storylines.

ranchelle Davis, better known as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Frenchieâ&#x20AC;? to the world, first blessed the masses with her immaculate voice as she effortlessly belted her tunes on television screens in living rooms across the country on the second season of, American Idol. Her personable demeanor and earth-shattering voice made her a favorite among the judges and her newly found fan base. Little did Frenchie know that placing as a semi-finalist on a reality TV show would catapult her into a flourishing career not only in the music industry, but also on Broadway. Her upbringing in theater during her days in Washington D.C and Los Angeles were evident in her stage presence during her stint playing ensemble roles in the Broadway musical Rent in 2003. Davis was also cast in the role of Effie in a 2004 West-coast touring production of Dreamgirls, and later rejoined fellow second season American Idol paranniversary national tour of Aint Misbehvain, for which she received a Grammy nomination.

There was no feat too large as Frenchie continued to pursue her dreams. In 2009 Frenchie was featured on Tony Moran’s Mix Magic Music album on the debut single “You Are” which peaked at number 5 on the Billboard hot club play chart. Most recently Frenchie was a contestant on NBC’s hit vocal competition The Voice, placing as a Top Four Finalist, in Christina Aguilera’s team of 8, putting Davis in the spotlight once again for her passionate vocals. With her cover of David Guetta and Kelly Rowland’s “When Love Takes Over” placing #3 on iTunes Dance chart, and a new smash single, “Love’s Got A Hold of Me” on the airways and in nightclubs across the country, what’s next for this beacon of inspiration? Wire Magazine catches up with Frenchie to discuss her career, her recent decision to come out of the closet, and what that means for her future.

First we’d like to say congrats to you Frenchie! What influenced your decision to come out of the closet? Aw, thank you! It wasn’t a pre-planned decision. I’d been out among my family and friends since I was 16 years old and never really thought it to be anyone else’s business. But one day I was doing an interview and I was asked a direct question and in the moment, I chose to answer it honestly. What was the scariest moment of coming out? I think I was most concerned about how the media scrutiny would affect my parents. How is your life different now that you have publicly disclosed your sexual orientation? It is pretty much the same. Was your new single “Love's Got a Hold on Me” based on a personal experience? Partially.

Do you feel coming out hurts or helps your career? Please explain. That’s hard to say. My most loyal fan base has always been the gay community and I’d say they love me even more now…other fans may be turned off by it, I don’t know and I can afford to care. Stage lights go dim, and audiences go home. When that happens, I need to be able to sleep at night, knowing that I live my life truthfully. Who is your greatest recording artist idol and why? I have several. Aretha, Whitney, Sylvester, Grace Jones, Tina Turner, and Freddie Mercury. Why? Amazing vocalists, amazing performers, incomparable. What was it like to perform on the Broadway show Rent and to have your own solo “Seasons of Love?” How did your Broadway experience enhance your overall career? I LOVED it. I have so many fond memories of RENT and I made lifelong friends there. Broadway, along with my theatre education, gave me discipline. Eight shows a week is not for the faint hearted. If you could only choose one, theatre or a solo career, which would you prefer and why? Theatre. It’s the real deal. How did The Voice influence your career? Many of the songs that I was given on the show were dance songs and that helped to open a whole new window of possibility for me, as far as my musical style was concerned. What is your fondest memory from the launch of your career until now? I have so many, but I often find myself giggling aloud when I look back on the Broadway days and think of my friends in NYC. Do you have any words of wisdom to anyone who may be unsure about coming out? I would just tell them that life is so much fun, when you love who you are and life is too short to waste time internalizing how other people process your own self-acceptance. I’m not going to lie and say that it’s

Many of our readers know you from your positions as the Operations Director of Pride and the LGBT Visitor Center. Can you explain your new role as the Director at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden? I am very happy to have been selected as the new Executive Director at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden. As the ED, I am responsible for all of the operations, membership, fundraising finance and programming. It is the perfect next step for me. Why do you feel preserving this "green space" is so important? With very little green space in Miami Beach, and all of the condos and apartments with no backyards, having this little oasis among the concrete is essential. What made you choose a Rat Pack 1960s theme for the anniversary celebration? The Garden was founded in 1961, so we are essentially celebrating the origins. Miami Beach was really hopping in the ‘60s with celebrities frequenting the Fontainebleau and Jackie Gleason doing his show at what is now The Fillmore. We thought it was a perfect way to connect with our roots…pun definitely intended… Do guests have to conform to the theme to attend the anniversary party? We ask that guests come in their best ‘60s glam, but we really just want everyone to have a good time. Whatever inspires you is just perfect. Aside from The Bigfoot, will the Botanical Gar-

ince it’s existence in 1962, the majestic Miami Beach Botanical Gardens has always strived to provide the public with access to the botanical garden while preserving green space, promoting green living and creating environmental education programs for both children and adults. Originally called the “Garden Center,” the site sat on the historic Collins Canal. Throughout the 1900s, the green space wore many hats, ultimately falling prey to the surrounding tourism, economic recessions, World Wars, and of course, hurricanes. The Art Deco renaissance arose in the 1980s and unfortunately The Garden had nearly vanished by that time. Residents approached the city of Miami Beach in 1996 in hopes to revive the gardens, ultimately resulting in the creation of the Miami Beach Garden Conservancy, a non-profit that would restore the Garden, into what is today’s progressive venue for arts and cultural programming, environmental education and cultural tourism. The Miami Beach Botanical Garden now under the direction of Cindy Brown, is ready to celebrate 50 years! We talk with the Executive Director as she fills us in on the celebration, as well as what’s to come for the enchanting urban green space. Join in on the two-tier celebration Thursday October 25th. Tier 1 will feature a VIP dinner, cocktails, dancing, and entertainment. Tier 2 of the event (After Party) will feature dessert buffets, cocktails and dancing. VIP Tickets (6-11pm) are $150 (Members - $125) and After Party tickets (8:30-11pm) are $50 (Members - $40).

den see any more art installations in the near future? Following Art Basel in December, a series of colorful, metal outdoor sculptures will be installed throughout the Garden. The art, created by Gus and Lina Ocamposilva, is an interpretation of the world where the artists were raised; the Andes and the Tropics, a world filled with great diversity and colors. These sculptures are reminiscent of the Art Deco style, yet stand alone as their own art form. The bright colors, empty space, and balanced forms complement the naturalistic feel of outdoor spaces such as the Garden. In fact, the first inspiration for the sculptures came from a spider web. Like the spider web, the sculptures themselves capture elements from nature that are their permanent inspiration. Will guests be able to indulge in the Garden's beautiful horticulture during the event or is the celebration limited to certain areas within the garden? Guests will be free to roam the grounds as they wish; however some areas are not very well lit. We are beginning a fundraising campaign to install lighting so that all areas of the garden will be accessible in the evenings. Our hope is that will be complete just after the beginning of 2013. In what ways can someone donate or contribute to the Miami Beach Botanical Garden? There are a number of options for those wishing to support the garden. There are different levels of membership starting at just $35. There are also opportunities for naming gifts with garden signage and sponsorship op-

portunities. We are happy to assist anyone who wants to determine the best option for giving. What do you attribute the longevity of the Miami Beach Botanical Garden to (50 years)? The Garden is one of the jewels of Miami Beach. Long ago, the city made a commitment to preserve this space even as buildings were erected around us and concrete was poured to create more parking. Both residents and visitors have enjoyed the garden and have played an active role in ensuring that we can continue to be here for all to experience. Aside from being a beautiful "green space," what other services does the Miami Beach Botanical Garden offer? The garden has many workshops and activities ranging from how to grow vegetables on your balcony, flower arranging and photography. We also have a weekly Wholesome Grocer, cooking classes, summer art program for kids and ongoing music and art performances and installations. Is the anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine's readers? Miami Beach Botanical Gardens, is one of the best-kept secrets in Miami Beach. If you haven’t visited us, make a plan to.
