WIRE MAGAZINE’S GUIDE TO A SPOOKTACULAR HALLOWEEN Every year, we dedicate this year’s issue to all the fabulous events taking place throughout Halloween Weekend in our Guide to a Spooktacular Halloween, and this year’s guide may actually be bigger and better than ever. From Miami to Fort Lauderdale, from expensive to inexpensive we’ve got at least one or two or maybe 10 events that will appeal to you.

Of course, our guide kicks off with the largest gay Halloween party in South Florida – SAVE Dade’s Annual Halloween Party. From the moment I moved to Miami 10 years ago, this was and still is THE best Halloween party in South Florida. This year, SAVE has chosen the theme, Hellrotika: Seed of the Beast and moved the soiree to the more centrally located Jungle Island. In my interview with CJ Ortuno on page 18, you can get the inside scoop on all the fab details. According to CJ, they have upped the ante in production value, creating an over-the-top event that will feature special effects, incredible shows, and fantastic music!

tently provide entertainment throughout the year. On Halloween bars like Score, TWIST, Palace, MOVA, Johnny’s and The Manor go above and beyond to create Halloween events that everyone can enjoy. TWIST is known for its spectacular Halloween decorations, as the staff and regulars come together to create an elaborate haunted house. This year, TWIST general manager Valentino Erikson has promised us that there will be some great surprises, as well as some hot beats with DJ Power Infitini working the turntables. Score is one of the most packed places on Lincoln Road to experience Halloween, and this year, they have dubbed the party, Fun House. Complete with snow cones, popcorn, and cotton candy, this will be the sweetest spot to enjoy Halloween. Of course, DJ Abel on the turntables will certainly make Score’s Fun House a night to remember. As the only gay bar on Ocean Drive, you can expect a spectacular party at the Palace. This Monday, they will host Wigstock with locals and out-of-towners competing for the most outrageous wig.

If you haven’t gotten your tickets yet, check out their website, www.savedade.org to get them now. VIP will not be sold at the door, so if you are planning to party in style this Halloween weekend, the time to buy is now!

Off the beach, Johnny’s Miami will be the most scandalous place to enjoy Halloween all weekend long, as their sexiest dancers will be working the stages for your viewing pleasure. The highlight of the weekend will definitely be the erotic costume contest on Saturday night! I can’t wait!

Of course one of the best things about living in South Florida is all of the fantastic seven-day-a-week gay venues that consis-

Miami’s only gay martini bar, MOVA Lounge, will be hosting the Halloween Block Party on the corner of Lincoln and

Michigan. Along with the $8 drink special all night, DJs AJ Reddy and J. Felix are set to make this the hottest place to party under the All Hollows Eve stars. Right down the road, Score has partnered with David’s Café to present their own block party as well. DJ Willy G will hop on the wheels of steel during Scream Street, which will be on Lincoln and Meridian. In Fort Lauderdale, The Manor Complex will be the place to party all weekend long with their highlight event taking place on Halloween, as they take over the entire block. DJ Kidd Madonny will serve as the spinster of the evening, while various performers keep the energy up all night long. Now if you don’t want to wait till Monday to show off that new sexy costume, there are a few early parties around South Florida you wont want to miss. Downtown Miami’s largest gay dance club, Discotekka, will host The Awakening on Saturday night with DJ Escape and Carlos G. On Sunday night, Lazaro Leon will host Havana Halloween at Bongos inside the American Airlines Arena. The night will feature DJs Lazaro Leon and Bill Hallquist and performances by Adora, TP Lords, and many more. Overall, we have put together a pretty comprehensive guide that I am sure you will enjoy! Happy Halloween!

Miami is a great town to live in if you love dining out or attending wonderful events where you can enjoy appetizing culinary delights paired with delicious cocktails. This is one of the reasons we created the extraordinarily successful Wire Magazine brunch series that so many of our readers have come to love so much. I am happy to report that after a short hiatus for the summer, the Wire Magazine Traveling Brunch series will soon start again with a new liquor sponsor. We certainly appreciate your amazing support for our brunches and all the requests we have received from our readers to start hosting our Sunday brunches again. POST MODERN CASINO PROJECT A CURE-ALL? WANNA BET? I like casinos. No, I don’t gamble, but I like casinos nonetheless. They often host good (or at least amusingly bad) entertainment, some have actually good restaurants, and in modern incarnation with resort and performance center characteristics, they definitely have a place in society. Mostly though, I like casinos because they represent the right of free people to do what they will with their own money and time, outside of the constraints placed on us by the do-gooders who think its their right to mandate behavior through force that they could not through the persuasive power of their ideas. So don’t get me wrong, it isn’t that I don’t approve of gaming.

thanks but no thanks. I think we can do just fine without the Genting project. I’m not well-versed enough in casino economics to know whether or not this project will magically lead to wide-spread economic growth. I do know that I have spent a great deal of time working the past few years in news and politics along the Gulf Coast and southeast where casino gaming was supposed to be a cure-all. Instead, little has changed for most businesses and many have been adversely affected.

And let’s not even wander into the more tax revenue argument. How’s that worked out with Lotto? Shouldn’t our schools be palaces? SAVE Dade Action PAC Endorsements in Miami-Dade Elections MIAMI BEACH

MATTI BOWER FOR MAYOR: A long time champion of equality, Matti Bower deeply cares about the LGBT community and has supported our issues at every level. She continues to find ways to leverage her public position to push us closer towards equality, not only in her city, but also at the state and federal levels. She helped start the City’s first Gay PRIDE Parade, formed the first LGBT Business Enhancement Committee, and continues to place qualified openly LGBT people in leadership positions in city government. Because of her leadership and support of the community, Matti Bower has earned the SAVE Dade Action PAC endorsement. JONAH WOLFSON FOR COMMISSIONER: Even though Jonah did not receive the SAVE Dade endorsement in his first bid for City Commissioner, he has not gone against his values and continues to care and support the community. He truly believes in equality for all people and has had a pro-equality voting record since he has been on the commission. Most recently, he helped fight for the creation of the Human Rights Committee at the City level and continues to build bridges for SAVE Dade to other city’s elected officials in hopes that they will pass pro-LGBT legislation. For this reason, and his unwavering support of our mission, Jonah Wolfson has earned the SAVE Dade Action PAC endorsement. DEEDE WEITHORN FOR COMMISSIONER: As an elected official, Deede is one of the strongest champions for LGBT equality in all of Miami-Dade County. Equality is one of her utmost priorities and is continuously finding ways to support the community. She voted in favor of creating the Miami Beach Human Rights Committee and her most recent effort includes making LGBT issues a priority for Miami Beach’s public policy consultants in Tallahassee. She is a staunch fiscal conservative and provides leadership for many elected officials who attempt to reconcile conservatism with social equality. Deede’s door is always open to the LGBT community as well as the community at large and her leadership has earned her the SAVE Dade Action PAC endorsement.

CITY OF MIAMI MARC SARNOFF FOR CITY OF MIAMI COMMISSION District 2: As a long time supporter of LGBT equality, Commissioner Sarnoff leads all City of Miami elected officials with a 100 percent pro-equality voting record. Commissioner Sarnoff was awarded the 2010 SAVE Dade Champions of Equality Award for his sponsorship of the City’s historic domestic partnership ordinance, granting all unmarried city employees the right to share their health benefits with their domestic partners.

WIRE FEATURE: HELLROTIKA: SEED OF THE BEAST

BY THOMAS BARKER PHOTOS BY HENRY PEREZ

Every year, the Annual SAVE Dade Halloween party attracts thousands of gay men and women, and their straight allies, looking to indulge in all that makes Halloween so scandalously fun! This year, SAVE Dade is hosting their shindig, dubbed Hellrotika: Seed of the Beast, at Jungle Island. Music, cocktails, incredible costumes, and fantastic production value are sure to make this year’s event one for the record books. When asked what SAVE hopes to accomplish with this year’s event, SAVE executive director CJ Ortuno responded with, “This is our biggest fundraiser, so we want to make the money that will continue to help us accomplish our mission of equality. Besides the fun and the memories we want to create, we also want people to know who we are. That even though this event shows the lighthearted side of our organization, we mostly do important, very serious work in fighting for the rights of people who are LGBT. We hope that on Sunday morning, people wake up and say to themselves, ‘that was a fun party, and I need to see what this organization is all about” Check out what else CJ had to say: Last year, you guys totally revamped the SAVE Dade Halloween party, dubbing it Hellrotika. What was the response? The response has been overwhelming. People are really taking a liking to the intrigue and the allure of a sexy, scary, and cause focused event. People

really don’t know what to expect when joining us and we like that!

VIP seems a little pricey this year. What do you get with a VIP ticket?

What is the theme this year, and why did you select it?

VIP, unlike last year, is a true VIP experience. Honestly we could have charged $500 for VIP. Grey Goose open bar, food, unique entertainment, a special lounge and patio, special DJs, local celebs, and more are included in this year’s VIP.

Seed of the Beast. Well one thing we are not lacking is creativity from our volunteer committee. We wanted to create an iconic thematic center to the party, so someone came to one of the meetings with a photo of the beast from the old “Neverending Story” movie and we developed the mythology to support it. Why do you think this year is going to be even more successful than last year? It all rides on the energy and leadership of the committee. Since we kept last year’s co-chairs Freddy Rodriguez and Tony Lima, but added new sub committee chairs, we have new blood and fresh ideas from the community. We’ve got designers, PR people, communications experts, movie producers, event producers - we are overflowing with creativity and it will show at this year’s event. Why did you choose Jungle Island as the venue? Jungle Island just made sense. Seed of the Beast is the theme and Jungle Island is home to many beasts. Apart from that, Jungle Island has made a real commitment to support the LGBT community. We appreciate the support of local businesses and in return we like to support them. It is central, it is unique, and it lends itself to a fab event.

Who are the DJs and why did you select them for this year? Our DJs are some of the best and most talented spinsters in our city. DJ Pabel Lima has made a huge mark in the LGBT and straight community with his unique tribal/house music style. Doug Jackson is a Bear Week staple, also well versed in all types of house music. He lives locally and his energy and style mesh well with Pabel’s energy. They are playing the main dance floor exclusively. In the VIP area we looked to mesh the legendary with the new and fresh. We have DJ MIIK of Coliseum, MEKKA, and The Manor fame and DJ Essential 6, a homegrown spin-doctor capable of throwing down an old new wave track within minutes of a contemporary dance track. These guys will elevate the VIP experience with their grooves. We’re lucky to count on their volunteer participation. Hellrotika: Seed of the Beat Saturday, Oct. 29th at 8 p.m. Jungle Island 1111 Parrot Jungle Trail, Miami www.savedade.org

A MAyor

for EvEryonE

Mayoral Candidate Steve Berke Discusses why he is the Best Choice for the Miami Beach LGBT Community Why should we vote for you over Matti Bower who has been such a friend to the LGBT community? Okay, it is true that Matti has been supportive of the LGBT community and has done some great things such as helping to bring a Gay Pride Parade to Miami Beach. However, I would argue that sometimes she has been more polite than actually friendly, especially when being truly friendly was not politically expedient. Ask yourself this: When Howard Stickland was beaten and abused by police officers for dialing 911 after witnessing those same cops brutally assaulting another gay man in Flamingo Park, why did the LGBT community have to pressure City officials to take action against the police? Why wasn’t Matti the one leading the charge and calling for immediate answers? And, why haven’t we seen her doing more to support gay marriage?

people feel that the cops are too quick to hassle gay men. Others assert that this is one of the reasons that many lesbians and gay men are leaving the city. What do you say to that? Well, firstly, I must point out that the majority of our police officers are among the very best in the world. However, there is a very small minority of cops that are a disgrace to their uniform, who do not behave in the way we expect of our public servants and, in fact, are simply criminals – be they beating up homosexual men in the park or drunkenly running over tourists in ATVs. For those bad apples the solution is simple, their actions will not be tolerated and we will prosecute them to the full extent of the law. As mayor I will have zero tolerance toward bad policing. Secondly, I do not think that it is true we

have seen an exodus of our gay and lesbian population from South Beach . I think what we have seen is our gay community maturing - our city boasts so many LGBT owned businesses that the Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce is located in Miami Beach at Old City Hall. We have high-profile gay leaders like Commissioner Michael Gongora, our city is home to numerous gay and lesbian citizens who are parents; they have families and worry about the future of their community because their children will grow up here. What will you do for the LGBT community when you are elected mayor? Well, as I said, I will be pro-active in fighting for the rights of gays and lesbians to be just as miserable as straight couples

Wait, isn’t Gay Marriage a state issue? Yes, of course. However, the mayor of a city with the global media presence of Miami Beach can be a powerful champion for gay marriage and can also be pro-active in bringing the fight for equality to state lawmakers. It is not good enough to just sit back and say there is nothing we can do and blame the status quo on those in Tallahassee . As a community we need to stand up for all of our citizens and do what is right. I have made my position on this issue clear since day one of my campaign, and have stated that I will be proud to officiate the first gay wedding at City Hall if the happy couple will allow me the honor of doing so. You mentioned the Strickland case. The relationship of the Miami Beach Police Department and the LGBT Community has certainly been soured by this case, and many

by being able to get married. I want to be absolutely clear that I will come down hard upon any discrimination against gay, lesbian or transgender people that takes place in our city. Also, I think it is time to expand Gay Pride from a simple parade to a city sponsored weekend event celebrating LGBT culture in Miami Beach on a scale approaching that of Art Basel or the South Beach Wine & Food Festival. I also promise to listen to your concerns, and to always be in your corner. And, what else do you stand for? Well, I was the first person to come up with a comprehensive plan to do away with Urban Beach Week in one year. The city will sponsor a re-branding of Memorial Weekend to a Veterans Beach Weekend, during which we will honor the service of our men and women in uniform and create a celebration that is fun and, most importantly, safe for everyone. I also favor the decriminalization of marijuana. We will use an on-the-spot fine system similar to those successfully implemented in Denver, Seattle and Philadelphia . This will save the city money by not prosecuting people for a victimless crime and, in fact, raise revenue for our City budget. I will also fix the pension crisis, audit the City’s books and cut some of the extraordinary salaries paid to city employees.

WIRED ON: MENTAL HEALTH DEALING WITH PERSONALITY DIFFERENCES During childhood, every person develops a unique pattern of behaving and thinking. We learn to lean toward certain ways of processing information and interacting with others. This pattern is our personality, and it is based on the ways we prefer to act and think. Each of us was born with these preferences, and as we grow up, we learn to behave in ways that fit our preferences. When we are in a situation in which we can behave according to our personality preferences, it feels natural and comfortable. When a situation requires us to behave in ways that don’t fit our preferences, we feel uncomfortable. As we progress through life, the pattern of preferences we are born with is altered by our environment: our childhood experiences, the feedback we get from others, and so on. As we mature, under normal conditions, our personality becomes stable and is expressed in a set of behaviors, skills, and attitudes. None of these preferences is good or bad. None of them is better than the others. They are simply descriptions of how people function in the world. Each pattern of preferences has both strengths and weaknesses. Those of us who are open to learning about ourselves can make the most of those preferences that bring us success and learn to minimize the less effective ways of being. WHY SHOULD I UNDERSTAND PERSONALITY DIFFERENCES? Knowing about personalities and how they work makes you more effective in life. It helps you to: Understand yourself better. When you understand your own personality type, you have a better understanding of what motivates you. If you can seek out experiences, work environments, and relationships in which you can express yourself and be appreciated for who you are, you will experience more satisfaction in life. Understand others better. When you understand people’s personality preferences, you are better able to manage relationships productively. It is easier to resolve conflicts and prevent stress when you understand what makes others tick. You also have more tolerance for differences when you understand that people are different. Make the most of your strengths. We have all been in relationships or work situations in which we were not appreciated for who we are. Perhaps if we had preferences, we would have sought out something different. Minimize your weaknesses. If you know what your personality weaknesses are, you can avoid situations where they will be likely to create problems for you. Be a more effective part of your work team. You can be more productive in a group when you understand the others’ personalities. Teams get along better when the members understand each other. Make good career choices. You will be most satisfied if you choose a career that makes use of your personality preferences and minimizes situations that make you uncomfortable. Be a better spouse or partner. When you understand that your partner’s personality style and preferences are different from yours, there are fewer sources of conflict and greater opportunities for closeness. Be a better parent. Knowing that your children’s personalities are different from yours allows you to help them learn in ways that fit their learning styles. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO ACCEPT OUR PERSONALITY DIFFERENCES? It’s important to remember that no set of personality traits is better or worse than any other. People respond to the world based on their unique combination of traits. Understanding that each of us is wired in our own unique way is the first step toward accepting and honoring each other’s differences. Dr. Gregg A.
