ALL WIRED UP

BY THOMAS BARKER

WIRE MAGAZINE ANNUAL HALLOWEEN PHOTO ALBUM It may have been raining all weekend, but you wouldn’t know it by all the scandalous and sensational photos in our Annual Halloween Photo Album. Every year, we dedicate this issue to all the incredible images from this past fun filled weekend also known as Halloween Weekend. As every South Florida local can tell you, Halloween is one of those special times where you can really let go of all your inhibitions, get wild, and just be as slutty or as crazy as you want – and people will only cheer you on for more! Take the cover of Wire Magazine this week for instance; as my fellow publisher, Rafa Carvajal, really outdid himself with his over-the-top costume at SAVE Dade’s Annual Halloween soiree, Hellrotika! And speaking of Hellrotika, the annual fundraising event for SAVE Dade kicks off our Halloween Photo Album. As you can see, partygoers went above and beyond to outdo last year’s fantastic costumes. From the Addams Family to creatures we cannot even understand, it was all there at Hellrotika. Of course, no Halloween would be complete without some scandalous times at TWIST. As always, TWIST created one of the most extravagant haunted houses in South Florida. Filled with creatures of the night, dead drag divas, and even a little Latin spice, TWIST was certainly one of the most popular spots to party all Halloween Weekend. As the largest gay dance party during Halloween, Score is always a sure thing on Halloween. This year, DJ Abel

hopped on the wheels of steel, providing Halloween revelers with some fantastic beats that kept the energy going all night long – even on a Monday night!

As you can see we’ve got some pretty fabulous images, and I hope you enjoyed your Halloween as much as we did capturing it all on camera.

Discotekka is already well known for its incredible themed parties, and, as such, have become one of the leading clubs in South Florida in terms of high quality production. This year for Halloween, the team at Discotekka dedicated their weekly Saturday night dance party to The Awakening, and from the pictures in this week’s issue, you can see there were certainly a lot of people getting into the spirit so-to-speak.

I’d like to close my column this week with a little update from Miami Beach Gay Pride. It looks like this year is set to be bigger and better than ever. For 2012, the Pride parade has moved to Sunday to allow organizers an additional day of activity leading up to the popular parade and festival.

In Fort Lauderdale, The Manor reigned queen, during their Halloween Block Party. As DJ Kidd Madonny worked the turntables, ghouls, goblins, and lowly pirates worked it out under the stars in front of Fort Lauderdale’s largest gay dance complex. Of course no Halloween on Ocean Drive would be complete without some scandalous antics at The Palace. Palace staff, bartenders, and revelers all competed for the most outrageous wig this past Sunday during their first annual Wigstock party! As always, incredible shows, delicious fare, and stiff drinks continued to make The Palace a Halloween hot spot. And our final page of Halloween images goes to the fantastic block party thrown by MOVA on Michigan and Lincoln this past Monday night. As DJ J Felix worked the turntables outside, DJ AJ Reddy kept the walls of MOVA covered with the latest Top 40 videos. Drinking, dancing, and prancing were a must at this high energy Halloween shindig.

In addition to the parade moving to Sunday, Miami Beach Gay Pride has also expanded the line-up of Pride activities, which will include a Friday night block party along Lincoln Road, a Saturday pool party at the Surfcomber Hotel, a Saturday night VIP fundraising event, and a Sunday night closing party after the parade and festival. Coming into its fourth year, Miami Beach Gay Pride has grown into the largest, single-day LGBT event of the entire year in Miami Beach. The hugely successful event in 2011 attracted more than 40,000 people from all walks of life, all parts of the country, and all age groups. Last year’s Pride Parade and Festival featured a parade with 66 entries and 1,200 participants, followed by an enormous festival with exciting celebrities and musical performances, 125 LGBTfriendly vendors and businesses, refreshments and a familyfriendly play area. This year, Miami Beach Gay Pride is expecting close to 60,000 attendees, even more parade and expo participants, and some incredible Pride weekend events! Stay tuned for more info!

WIRE FEATURE: EROS LOUNGE SET TO OPEN IN NORTH MIAMI

BY THOMAS BARKER & JESSE SPENCER

One of the best things about living in South Florida is the opportunity to experience some of the latest trends in nightlife on a daily basis. It seems gay bars, parties, and events are constantly popping up all around us. One bar that is set to make a huge splash in our seaside town is sure to be the new Eros Lounge on Biscayne and 82nd Street. Owner Peter Hans has spared no expense to create a bar that will cater to almost any and everyone’s needs. Dining, entertainment, fantastic music, and so much more will combine to make Eros Lounge an immediate hit among North Miami locals and South Florida in general. And beyond all the fab cache of a high-end video lounge, Eros Lounge will also be one of the most affordable gay bars in South Florida, offering well drinks for $6 and premium libations for as little as $9. Not a better deal in town! We recently caught up with Peter to get the inside scoop on his new pad, and we are happy to say, we can’t wait for the grand opening soiree on 11/11/11. Check out what Peter had to say: Tell Wire readers about your new venue, Eros? Eros Lounge is a music video bar centrally located on Biscayne Boulevard in the heart of the Upper East Side Miami. What does Eros actually mean? Eros is the Greek god of love. Where did the concept come from? The concept was derived from the fact that I’m of Greek descent and I’ve been influenced by my family and culture and am proud to have this opportu-

nity to show my love for ancient Greek mythology through music, videos, food, and a very social and welcoming place. You’re a local right? How is Eros going to be different from other venues frequented by members of the LGBT community? Yes, we are a local bar, but our main foundation is to entertain all members of the LGBT community, including South Beach, Midtown, Fort Lauderdale… pretty much everyone from any region. Is Eros a bar or a club? Eros is a bar/lounge with great seating at the main bar. We will regularly feature the hottest videos by our resident VJs on our state of the art sound and video system. Our guests can expect to hear music ranging from the 70s all the way to the latest Top 40. I understand you are going to be serving food. Can you tell our readers about your menu and type of food you will be serving? Our menu is completely homemade, organic, and features light appetizers, gyros, house salads, homemade desserts, and coffee, among other things. We are still creating a special menu for our Late Sunday Brunch. What can we expect on a weekly basis? We have put together an incredible line-up of weekly events that feature great drag performers, DJs, cabaret and burlesque nights. Also once a month, we will host a lesbian night, which will begin on November 19th called Flirt and hosted by Lynn Bove. The new creation of Sunday T called Sundance is going to really change things up a bit, while Saturdays everyone will be Eros bound with weekly DJs and performers tearing up the turntables and stage!

8 | wire magazine | follow wire on facebook & twitter: visit www.wireweekly.com & click on the icons

What kind of prices will you have on drinks and food? Our menus have been designed with competitive and affordable prices on drinks and food. Our drinks range from $6 to $9 for premium brands. Plus, we are featuring a daily Eros Cocktail, which is only $6 including weekends! This may sound a little bit cheap, but will the parking be free and what is the parking situation? Parking is totally free with security guards. We have over 50 new parking spots in the east side of Biscayne Boulevard and 82 Street. Can I see some skin at Eros? Will you have strippers or dancers there? We have some amazing female and male dancers working it out during our special events. They will be provocative, sexy, and hot! Because we want to bring something new to the community, we are working really hard to put on a great show that matches our concept and main vision. What can we expect at Eros’ grand opening party on 11/11/11? On Friday, we have complimentary drinks thanks to Chambord Vodka and Herradura Tequila. Our lineup of entertainers is amazing as well. The warm up set will be by VJ AJ Reddy, followed by the incredible tracks of DJ Charlie Rojas. The shows will be hosted by Noel Leon and doors open at 8 p.m. The complimentary drinks will be available from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. EROS GRAND OPENING Friday, November 11th 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. 8201 Biscayne Blvd., Miami www.erosloungemiami.com

WIRED FLIX: THE SKIN I LIVE IN & WEEKEND

Things are complicated in the cinematic world of Pedro Almodóvar. In the early films that made his reputation, Almodóvar tied his characters and their relationships in knots and then kept his audience up to speed as everything came undone. His films were frantic, freaky, and funny. Later, after a few significant misfires, the films became more serious (Think BAD EDUCATION and ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER) and the complications more nuanced. In Almodóvar’s new film, THE SKIN I LIVE IN, the complications are many and they’re darker than ever before. Behind the gates of his sumptuous mansion Dr. Robert Ledgard (Antonio Banderas) spends time in his private laboratory working on his favorite obsession -- a synthetic skin, sensitive to the touch but impervious to fire and blows. He also performs very discrete plastic surgery on the local elite in his private operating theater. Upstairs, Marilia (Marisa Paredes), Ledgard’s oddly devoted housekeeper (or is she?) keeps things cooking in the kitchen and takes care of Vera Cruz (Elena Anaya), a beautiful young woman who lives in the bedroom next to Ledgard – and is not free to leave. She’s a patient. Or is she? The ritzy veneer is highly polished, but under that gorgeous sheen lurk complications. And when a man in a leopard suit shows up at the front door the whole complicated, carefully balanced world of Dr. Robert Ledgard starts to spin out of control.

With THE SKIN I LIVE IN Almodóvar out-Almodóvars Almodóvar. The film is reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock’s VERTIGO, that most Hitchcockian of all Hitchcock films: An anthology of obsessions, some familiar, some given new form. Both films center on makeovers, although in THE SKIN I LIVE IN the makeover goes well beyond hair, makeup, and a change of clothes. In VERTIGO Hitchcock was concerned with identity and with watching, observing, recording; in THE SKIN I LIVE IN Almodóvar is concerned with madness, destruction, revenge. Lovers of narrative thrust, of energetic storytelling, may find VERTIGO a bit of a slog; it’s likely that THE SKIN I LIVE IN will try their patience as well. Almodóvar is in no hurry. For all its style and subtlety, the film keeps some of its secrets for a bit too long. Vera’s story remains an enigma for a long, long time, and the film spends a fair amount of time on a perfectly rendered, and perfectly pointless, Hitchcockian MacGuffin. But when the complications come undone, the film explodes with astonishments. The final third of THE SKIN I LIVE IN is dark, disturbing, and thrilling. And well worth the wait. WEEKEND is a small film from Britain that strikes deep and leaves a mark. It’s the opposite of the bigmoney eye candy movie that you won’t remember an hour after it’s done. The film follows Russell (Tom Cullen) and Glen (Chris New), two gay men who hook up at a club and, over the course of the next few days, have sex, do some drugs, talk rather a lot, and stumble toward intimacy and love. Intimacy is the keyword here. Writer/director Andrew Haigh is a gentle but clear-eyed observer,

20 | wire magazine | follow wire on facebook & twitter: visit www.wireweekly.com & click on the icons

building his story detail by tiny detail. Cullen and New aren’t merely “believable” as Russell and Glen; they just are, living and breathing in front of you. WEEKEND is a powerful little movie, and a powerfully moving one.

TOP TRAX: SOUTH BEACH GETS A NEW SIX PACK

BY DJ FR8-O

Some guys crave a hot ass. Some like legs that can crack a walnut. Some say a cute smile does it for them. But for Ben Harvey and Dave Rubin, it’s all about the sixpack! Ben and Dave are the hosts of “The Six Pack”, a hilarious gay radio show on SiriusXM. Every week the boys give us the dish on hot topics, celebrity guests, and brand new music, all packed in six convenient parts. In just three short years The Six Pack has become one of the top comedy podcasts on iTunes and is heard in over 70 countries. This week, the boys will be bringing their six packs and their show to South Beach and broadcasting live from the Lords Hotel. Here’s a sneak peek at what the guys have planned for their South Beach debut this weekend. How did you guys come up with The Six Pack? Ben: Dave and I had a show together on Here! TV. They plopped us into a room and said, “Go!” The chemistry was there from the beginning. We then decided to launch our own show independently as a podcast and recently made the jump to SiriusXM. It’s like gay brunch for your ears! Dave: The whole idea of The Six Pack came to us in a 5-minute conversation at Ben’s kitchen table. It really was just that we wanted to do a show that would be funny, relevant, and interesting. The name just popped: gays love to workout, to drink, and seem to all have ADD, so we decided to do a quick-paced show with six segments every week. How is your show different than any other gay radio show?

Who have been some of your favorite musical guests?

greet type thing at the hotel bar from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday evening, November 4th. Come get drunk with us!

Ben: We interviewed BT, who is one of my favorite electronic artists. I listened to his CD over and over in college when deciding whether or not to come out of the closet. Fun stuff!

Dave: I’ve heard amazing things about the Lords Hotel but I keep expecting it to be like the vampire hotel in True Blood. Actually, I hope it’s like the Vampire Hotel in True Blood.

Dave: Loved this guy Clayton Hawkins who we just played a few weeks ago. He’s an out gay artist and really fun to listen to. It’s great to help out people who are actually in the community when we can.

What else do you have planned for us that weekend?

What’s the craziest radio moment you’ve had with a guest?

Ben: We’re going to hit up a bunch of gay bars and clubs and do as much pool and beach time as possible. And then we’re covering Sleepless Night, where we’ll get a chance to interview all kinds of artists, musicians, and cool peeps.

Dave: I’m convinced that Fran Drescher was drunk or stoned when we interviewed her. But she was also married to a gay man for years, so I cut her a lot of slack. I mean I’m gay and I can’t imagine marrying a gay man.

Dave: All on natural highs, I’m sure.

Ben: We interviewed Joy Behar standing on an abandoned dock next to the Hudson River. We were huddled behind a moving truck to stay out of the wind. Don’t ask!

Ben: We’re live on SiriusXM every Saturday, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., on OutQ, channel 108. We’re big with the gay truckers.

What are you looking forward to most about your first broadcast in South Beach?

Dave: And we release a podcast every Wednesday on this thing called iTunes. I hear it’s quite popular with the young people.

Dave: It’s always great to hit up a new city and meet all the people. From our travels we’ve met tons of gay people from all walks of life and they all have one thing in common--sucking... Umm, I mean, hospitality, yeah, yeah, they are all very hospitable.

Where/when can we catch your show regularly?

Which one of you has the best six pack? Ben: Let’s just say neither of us can compete with South Beach six packs.

Dave: Well, we’re really just a radio show and Ben and I happen to be gay. And actually, I’m not usually gay before 9 p.m. anyway. So, if anything, we’re just a radio show by two guys who happen to like guys, but aren’t into each other. Weird, right?

Ben: Hotness and sunshine!

Dave: Ugh, I knew we should’ve named the show, ‘Two Fat Asses.’

When can we catch your live broadcast at the Lords Hotel?

Is there anything else you’d like to say to your South Beach fans?

Ben: Everyone asks if we’re a couple – the answer is no. I think that’s probably why this works, as there is no sexual tension whatsoever!

Ben: We’ll it’s our first time at a gay - I mean, ‘appropriately oriented’ hotel - so we’re going to be keeping our schedule kind of flexible. But we’ll be doing a meet and

Ben: Am I too old to become a pool boy?
