TWO POWERHOUSE DJS SPIN SOUTH FLORIDA INTO A WHIRLWIND There are so many things to be thankful for, as we gear up for Thanksgiving, but of all the things I could list here, there is just one thing that really stands out when you live in a city driven by entertainment! South Florida is literally one of the few places on earth where we get the opportunity to see, hear, taste, and experience pretty much any and everything our little hearts desire. For this week’s issue, we have decided to do a split cover, dedicating the pages of Wire Magazine to the genre of dance music and two powerhouse DJs that will be spinning South Florida into a whirlwind of high energy beats mixed with a state of the art sound and lighting system forging a hurricane of dancing!!! Needless to say, DJs Hector Fonseca and DJ/producer Tom Stephan of Superchumbo are two DJs people just cannot get enough of, and we’re very excited about their South Florida arrival. DJ Tom Stephan will kick off Thanksgiving Day Weekend festivities up north in the largest gay dance club in Fort Lauderdale, The Manor Complex, during the United States premiere of Europe’s most infamous gay dance event, Propaganda on Wednesday, November 23rd.
America first got a taste of Tom’s high-test trax in 2001 with his debut release, ‘The Revolution’. “It’s time for the revolution,” sang Victoria Wilson- James, “Get down on your knees.” With those words--carried by Tom’s army of house grooves and dark beats--dance floors around the world rose up and surrendered to a new era. Within a year, Superchumbo (Portuguese for “super-leaded”) not only had enough trax for his first “Best of” compilation, he had created his own signature sound and received props from the big boys like Danny Tenaglia, Deep Dish, and Pete Tong, who dubbed ‘The Revolution’ as Track of the Year. Not long after, the father of the “lead-head” sound launched his own label called ChumboMundo. Check out our feature on Tom Stephan and his appearance at The Manor Complex on page 11. The next day, everyone will head down south to party it up at Miami Beach’s largest gay dance club, Score during their White Party sanctioned party, White Journey. Score has thrown this party year after year, and every year the caliber of DJs and the number of people that come out just seem to get bigger and better. With DJ Hector Fonseca on the Score’s grand wheels of steel, the boys of Score are expecting an even larger crowd. “We are very excited to have Hector here for White Journey,”
explains Score owner Billy Kemp. “We do this event every year to support the incredible work that Care Resource does throughout the year, and having Hector at the helm will definitely help us blow this event up. People should expect an incredible party!” And we couldn’t agree more. Mixing NYC house with Spanish tribal and progressive beats, Hector Fonseca has created an international sound all his own. It’s been tearing up gay dance floors around the globe, most notably at Barcelona’s Matinee Parties and at his residencies in New York and Toronto. Additionally, the fashion model-turned-DJ reigns as one of the hottest star remixers, charting four #1 Billboard dance remixes this year. His productions for Katy Perry, Beyonce, and his newest – the official remix of Lady Gaga’s “You and I” - have all topped the Billboard dance charts. His two compilation albums, “New York Anthems” Vol. 2 and 3 remain best sellers on iTunes. And according to Hector, he doesn’t plan on stopping any time soon. Check out what he had to say to us: Do you really remix your tracks live in front of the crowd? I’m all about live mixing and re-mixing. It means I never play the same set twice so my dance floor is always a unique experience. You recently changed your sound from ‘electribal’ to a more international flair. I tend to play tribal progressive with vocal samples and classics worked in. I also like to preview the remixes and productions I have been working on.
What are you most proud of these days?
What makes you happy these days?
My production work. There are a lot of DJs out there. I can honestly say I bring something to the table with my original music. It’s rare in this business and I’m proud of it.

Is being a DJ as glamorous as it appears to be?
Bullying and the people who reward bullying.
Like with any job in entertainment, it’s sometimes glamorous and sometimes grueling. Yes, you get to travel around the world and meet interesting people, but you also have to get on that plane and play that set no matter how you are feeling. But I’m not gonna lie, it’s pretty glamorous and fun most of the time!
Are DJs given the respect they deserve?
What’s left to do? There are a lot of things I still want to accomplish. For example, I am now doing official remixes for artists like Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, but that’s not where it ends for me. I would like to write some original music for them some day and win awards for it. There is definitely room for growth, and I’ve got a lot planned for a career that will go beyond what I’m doing now. You don’t worry that the music biz is a young man’s industry? No, I’m pretty young to be at this level and over 10 years into it. Believe it or not, most of my peers have been DJ’ing much longer; 15, 20, 30 years for some. I look at guys like Danny Tenaglia, Victor Calderone, and Abel and I know I have a lot of years ahead of me.

What makes you angry?
DJs have never been more important and labels and artists realize that. I recently got a call from a well-known singer saying that she wanted to send me tracks from her upcoming album for my opinion. I was incredibly flattered. How do you feel about the progress the gay community has made in 2011? The community is full of love and excitement and we are poised to take over the world, but let’s first have a little fun at White Party.

‘Propaganda’ is one of Europe’s largest events and the inspiration for the drama that’s about to go down at The Manor this Thanksgiving Eve. Legendary circuit event producer and nightlife promoter, Gary Santis has teamed up with local promoters Ryan Work and Alex Prieto to bring an event of epic proportions to South Florida. The evening promises to be an elaborate concoction of sexual tension and an uninhibited release of energy and passion with live entertainment of the scale that only Gary Santis can deliver. Speaking of “uninhibited release”, headlining the extravaganza, direct from London, will be DJ/Producer Tom Stephan (aka Superchumbo), and we couldn’t be more thankful!

“I still pick up the things that resonate with me around the world and I put them through my New York filter,” he explains. “The soul of the sound I love is [still] there.” Tom’s most current trax – “Turn That Shit Up” (for Southern Fried) and “Lights Out” (with Pete Gleadall for Nervous) – showcase his latest inspirations: the electro sound of the UK and the new Dutch sound. “It’s got a sexy Latin feel on the bottom and tons of squeaky electro energy on the top and it’s structured in a very fast paced way,” he says. “That’s what I love about it.”
Ever the consummate music worshiper, sonic explorer, and dedicated DJ; Superchumbo has continually evolved throughout the years seeking out new sounds, remixing superstars, and playing around the globe--all while building on the foundation he first laid down in the after-hours clubs of New York City.
The high-in-demand DJ now travels the world, regularly taking over venues like Ministry of Sound in London, Amnesia in Ibiza, and AgeHa in Tokyo. This Thanksgiving Weekend the all-American boy will finally be back on native soil and kicking up the dirt at The Manor in Fort Lauderdale. With such a crazy schedule and an ocean away, I was VERY thankful to get a hold of the smoldering spinmaster while he was in London, prepping for his big night in South Florida.

Check out what he had to say: How did you first get hooked on DJing? I was converted into a house-head the first time I heard Junior Vasquez at the Sound Factory in the early 90s. I got the bug and there was no turning back! What’s helped you keep your style so fresh all these years? I think that my style is a mix of the NYC/Miami sound that I originally fell in love with, mixed with European influences that come from living in London. I’m constantly seeking out new sounds to keep things exciting and new. Who have been some of the biggest influences on your music recently? I’ve really been into a lot of the new Dutch guys recently, like Franky Rizardo, Rishi Romero, Sandro Silva, and Joey Suki, but I’m also just as inspired by long time friends of mine like Honey Dijon and Tedd Patterson. Do you have a new track or compilation dropping soon? I’m working on a new Superchumbo album for Nervous Records. The first single from the album is a collaboration with Celeda, called Fire and it’s fire! Do you have anything big in the works that you can let us in on?

Is this your first appearance in South Florida? I’ve been to Miami many times, but it’s only my second appearance in Fort Lauderdale. It’s not often that I play gay parties when I’m in South Florida, so that makes this a really special event. What have you got in store for us at The Manor on November 23rd? WIRED FLIX: MELANCHOLIA
The end of the world is a long, slow drag in MELANCHOLIA, the new film by controversial Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier. “Melancholia” is not only the name of a rogue planet on a collision course with Earth (or maybe it’s not), it’s also the feeling you’re likely to have when you stumble out of the cinema at the film’s end, dazed and melancholy. And not because of the sad fate of humankind, but for the loss of two and a quarter hours to the current Bad Boy of International Cinema. The film falls roughly into thirds and begins promisingly at the wedding reception of Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and Michael (Alexander Skarsgård). From the very beginning it does not go well – the newlywed’s stretch limo is too long to navigate the winding country road that leads to the site of the party, and the happy couple arrives at their own reception hours late. It gets worse. None of the games, toasts, and other activities, worked out by an obsessive degree by Justine’s sister Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg), come off, and Justine starts wandering away for reasons unknown. By party’s end, the groom leaves the party and the marriage and Justine is sinking into an inexplicable depression. And that’s the fun part. The collapse of the wedding reception – and the marriage it celebrates – is not only amusing; it’s a cavalcade of offbeat stars. A robustly bearded John Hurt shows up as Justine’s father. Charlotte Rampling, as the mother of the bride, brings caustic cynicism to the party. Stellan Skarsgård plays Claire’s phony PR-guy boss and Eurofilm oddity Udo Kier has a hilarious cameo as the distraught wedding planner who watches as his carefully planned affair collapses into debacle.
This section of the film is the playground of Lars von Trier, trickster god with his observations as precise as an astronomer’s, his sense of satire as sharp as a surgeon’s scalpel. But once the party is over von Trier seems overwhelmed by the Great Importance of his film. Everything slows down and gets oh, so very serious. The second act follows the newly no-longer-married Justine as she stumbles about in a glassy-eyed but glamorous haze of depression brought on by the collapse of her marriage and career or the possible end of the world or some combination of those two factors and maybe others – she’s just really, really blue. And gorgeous. MELANCHOLIA is visually stunning – and there’s plenty of time to contemplate von Trier’s splendid compositions. Justine’s malaise confounds Claire and her husband John (Kiefer Sutherland), who is preoccupied with Melancholia, a big, blue, deadly orb that seems bound to smash into the Earth – a terminally destructive event. John is confident that Melancholia will give us a pass; Claire is too, well, melancholy to pay much attention. In the third act, as Melancholia’s course becomes clear, Claire panics and Justine recovers a bit of her sang-froid, making the terrifying situation at least bearable for Claire and her young son, Leo (Cameron Spurr). MELANCHOLIA’s second and third acts are interminably slow. Von Trier apparently thinks the more ponderous the action the more portentous the message, but by the end of MELANCHOLIA most viewers will have only one concern – the location of the theater’s exit. One final point: MELANCHOLIA? A big roving planet named Melancholia threatens to destroy the Earth? Really, Lars?

Is this the new cute thing from the Bright Boys of World Cinema – giving fictional heavenly bodies names so absurd they all but dare the audience to suspend disbelief? (I’m talking to you, James Cameron.) All the time, money, technical innovation, and imagination that went into a film like AVATAR and the best name you can come up with for a distant, exotic planet is Pandora? I spot a Movieland opportunity here. The film industry clearly needs a new, highly specialized species of screenwriter; someone who doesn’t actually write anything but makes up plausible names for alien worlds, planetoids, satellites, and other sci-fi detritus.
