A WONDERFUL YEAR IN PICTURES Well it’s official. We are in the midst of holiday season! Hanukah has begun, Christmas is this Sunday, and pretty soon, we will all be toasting to the New Year! One of my favorite things about the holidays is, that for a brief moment, we get the chance to take a break from the daily grind and hectic work schedule to really stop and appreciate the people, events, and opportunities that are given to us on a regular basis. I am sure that I am not the only one who feels that this has been a pretty hectic year. On a personal level 2011 has been such a tremendous year in so many aspects. From the really great things that have happened to the not so great, I have had the blessing of having some of the most incredible friends, clients, advertisers, co-workers, and colleagues to really make everything so great. Every year around this time, I can’t help but reflect on all the things that have really made the year so dynamic, and, in doing so, feel humbled by the wonderful events that have taken place. Because for every one bad experience, there have been 100 more really great things that have happened. This is why we always dedicate this issue to the fantastic events, memories, and experiences of each year through our Annual Year in Pictures Issue. Living in South Florida, we get the chance to revel in a fantastical place that offers so many wonderful things to see and

do on a daily basis. If you haven’t figured it out yet, South Florida truly is paradise, and that is exactly what you will see in this week’s issue. We kick off our Year in Pictures with the Annual Winter Party Festival. Last year, The Task Force had a record breaking year, attracting thousands of gay men and women to our sandy shores for a week of parties, cultural events, and dancing – and all in the name of LGBT rights! Less than a month later, Miami Beach held its third Annual Gay Pride event, which was the largest single day event for the LGBT community in Miami Beach with close to 45,000 people packing one of the most famous streets in the world, Ocean Drive. Over the summer, we got the chance to cool off from the summer heat during the Fourth Annual Summerfest Pool Party, which took place at the glamorous Shore Club Hotel. Most recently, we celebrated the 26th Annual White Party Week, and throughout the event, our photographers were able to snap some incredible photos of the thousands of revelers who came out to have a good time and raise some much needed funds for South Florida’s largest HIV/AIDS service organization, Care Resource. This year, the South Florida scene welcomed two lovely new additions, the sexually scandalous new Johnny’s Miami and North Miami’s Eros Lounge. In our Year in Pictures, you will get the chance to see some of the hottest images from the two new hot spots.

Of course, our seven-day-a-week gay bars really do keep South Florida popping with their weekly parties and events. As the longest running bar and restaurant in South Beach, The Palace has only gotten better with time. The drag performances continue to be one of the most famous attractions in South Beach. And when it comes to class, there is no more opulent gay watering hole than MOVA Lounge. Throughout 2011, MOVA has not only continued to bring out all that glitters in South Florida but has also paired it with a delicious martini! Every weekend at Score seems to be a hell of a time as they regularly feature some of the biggest DJs in the industry, while Discotekka Saturday nights have become a staple among the young and fabulous, looking to dance their asses off in one of the largest clubs in South Florida! And South Beach wouldn’t be the same without the nightly shenanigans that take place at Miami Beach’s longest running gay bar and club, TWIST! Just check out the pictures on page 16 to see for yourself! Edison Farrow has had a pretty busy year, re-launching some of his most infamous soirees. Most recently, his resurrected weekly party, Hype Fridays at MOVA has become the “it” place to party! And there’s even more to see in this week’s Year in Pictures Issue, so sit back, relax, and enjoy perusing some of the best memories South Florida has to offer! Merry Christmas!

Initially this was the week I was going to share reader emails and notes that have come in over the past few months. The litany of racism allegations (racist for thinking Memorial Day shootings are bad, racist for opposing the Genting development, etc.) makes for entertaining reading, if somewhat predictable. But it didn’t seem in the spirit of the holidays for this, the final Postmodern Politics of 2011. So instead of the rants of angry reactionaries and my effervescent quips in retort, I thought that in the spirit of the start of a new year, I would offer up some thoughts on wishes for 2012 in the wonderful world of politics.

takes part in it. Neither facts nor reason interferes with media’s push to advance its own narrative and agenda. The result is a whole lot of citizens that have no idea what’s really going on, while it adversely affects their lives. That opens the door to demagogues coming in and selling them lies to advance their own agendas. A dishonest media can blame the local version of the evil one-percenters, while politicians go about their business of raping the public. The public would be better served by a town crier.

I wish people would stay pissed off.

It’s not that I’m against gambling in principle. It’s not that I’ve even decided my own opinion on the possibility of destination casino-resorts in the state. It’s that I find it an egregious breach of etiquette and incredibly presumptuous for developers to be rolling out their plans before the state has taken action. Can’t we at least pretend that there will be an open and honest debate in Tallahassee on the issue and that big-money interests and all of the lobbyists aren’t going to end up getting what they want, as they always do? It’s arrogant, brazen and annoying. Sure, they can probably buy what they want. But is it too much to ask that there be a pretense of legitimacy to the process?

Angry voters have really been a delight this past year. A delight in that it seems like folks are finally catching on to how crooked and self-serving the political class is. Sure, a rigged system only permits us to replace one narcissistic crackpot for another, but at least people caught on. My hope is that it continues and spreads like wildfire to Miami Beach and other municipalities where the political class is in need not of reform – but of a reckoning.

I wish local media would do its job or just die already. Sounds like I’m wishing myself out of a job, huh? Not really. Do you want to know why politicians, their funders, and the well-fed bureaucracy get away with what they do? Because the major media permits it and occasionally

I wish the casino developers would just back the f*&$ off.

I wish another Katy Sorenson would manifest.

Miami-Dade’s best commissioner in recent memory is sorely missed, despite the good work she’s doing now in the private sector.

Magazine are proof of that. Enjoy your life to the fullest so some day you can look back fondly at all the good times you had with your friends and family. Always remember that we don’t know when our time will be up. Unlike the many events we capture in our photo albums, that is an event that will happen at a time and day not of our choosing. As Steve Jobs reminded the graduating class of Stanford University on June 12, 2005, “Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything - all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.” Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all our readers. I wish the State Attorney’s office would be more zealous in public corruption investigations.

One has to assume that the State Attorney’s office knows at least as much as does your columnist about public corruption. Sure they need evidence and all of that. But can it really be so difficult? Half the corrupt elected officials in town are too stupid to be very good at covering their tracks. And the other half is so prolific in their corruption that it would seem reasonably do-able to find enough evidence to at least move ahead. I know the office is heavily politicized. But, really? Really?

I hope North Miami figures out what to do with Biscayne Landing, and that it works. A wish for my original hometown and the total mess that the economy and a failed (albeit amusing in a dirty, crazy way) administration have made of Biscayne Landing. I wish that Miami Beach would discover a better class of political candidates.

And, finally, a wish for my more recent hometown. Of course, I’ve been harping on this issue for almost 20 years. One can still have hopes and dreams, though. At least this time of year, before a wave of reality washes over town on January 2. That’s what the season is all about.

GOT HOLIDAY SPIRIT? Not all of us share in the celebration and joy associated with the holiday season. Many people feel stressed and unhappy in response to the demand of shopping for gifts, spending large amounts of money, attending parties, and entertaining guests. For gay, lesbian, and bisexual people, conflict arising from ‘coming-out’ issues, increased expectations, holiday gatherings, or when there has been a history of less-than-accepting family members, this time of year can be especially challenging. People often respond to these stresses with excessive drinking, drug abuse, poor eating, difficulty sleeping, and physical complaints. Many turn to compulsive sex and/or ‘hooking-up’ behavior to deal with the loneliness. The ‘holiday blues’ are a common result. If you experience reactions like these during the holidays, you are not alone. What are some of the causes of the ‘holiday blues’? Fear of disappointing others. Some people fear disappointing their loved ones during the holidays. Even though they can’t afford to spend a lot of money on gifts, some people feel so obligated to come through with a fancy gift that they spend more than they can afford. Expecting gifts to improve relationships. Giving someone a nice present won’t necessarily strengthen a friendship or romantic relationship. When your gifts don’t produce the reaction you had hoped for, you may feel let down. Anniversary reactions. If someone important to you passed away or left you during a prior holiday season, you may become depressed as the anniversary approaches. Bad memories. For some families, the holidays are times of chaos and confusion. This is especially true in families where people have substance abuse problems or dysfunctional ways of relating. One may always carry memories of the disappointment and upheaval that came with the holidays, even though things may be better now. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Though less of a concern here in Miami, people who live in northern states may become depressed during the wintertime because of seasonal affective disorder, which results from fewer hours of sunlight as the days grow shorter during the winter months. Not to mention the cold! Often (not always), the ‘holiday blues’ are temporary, however here are a few ideas you can use to help make this year’s holiday experience more pleasant and less stressful: Be realistic. Don’t expect the holiday season to eliminate all past problems. The forced cheerfulness will not ward off sadness or loneliness. Give yourself permission not to feel cheerful. Accept your feelings, even if they are not what you would like to be experiencing. If you recently experienced a loss, you can’t expect yourself to put on a happy face. Tell others how you are feeling, and what you need. Get the support you need. Learn about social and spiritual activities, groups, and workshops designed to help people who struggle during the holidays. Reach out to loved ones. If you have a therapist, ask for an extra session or two to help you get over the holiday hump. Take special care of yourself. Schedule time to relax and pamper yourself, take a warm bath, or spend a quiet evening by yourself to decompress. Don’t neglect exercise, which has a positive impact on depression because it boosts serotonin levels. For some people, the ‘holiday blues’ continue well into the New Year. This is frequently caused by leftover feelings of disappointment and being physically exhausted. In addition, the start of the new year is a time of reflection, which can bring about anxiety. Clinical depression is more than just feeling sad for a few weeks. Symptoms generally include changes in appetite and sleep patterns, having less interest in daily activities, difficulty concentrating, and general hopelessness. This is a condition that requires professional treatment. If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, or expresses feelings of worthlessness or thoughts of suicide, it is important to seek the help of a psychologist or other qualified mental health professional immediately. DECEMBER - 22 Celebrate the holidays at one of Miami’s incredible performance venues. Miami offers top-notch entertainment all year long and the holiday season is filled with a variety of choices including New Year’s Eve festivities. Choose from the electronic music of Nero, performing at JANUARY - 4 the Fillmore Miami Beach, to an evening of classical music by The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Broward Center. Area theaters offer

a variety of holiday shows including Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol at the Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Mile and The Santaland Diaries at the Arsht Center. Fans of Broadway will not want to miss performances of Million Dollar Quartet at the Arsht Center or Cirque Dreams Holidaze, another delightful holiday show, at the Broward Center. The Nutcracker, a holiday staple, will be performed by the Miami City Ballet at The Broward Center and by the Kirova Ballet at the Gusman Center. The Orange Drive Miami Beach Music Festival returns for the second year with a roster of entertainers that includes Cee-Lo Green, Ne-Yo, Pete Wentz, and Jermaine Dupri.

NERO, the electronic music act from London, performs live at the Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason on December 30. Salute to Vienna returns for its 13th season at the Arsht Center on December 30. The New Year’s concert features a cast of more than 75 musicians, singers, and dancers in beautiful costumes.

The perfect holiday show may be found at Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Mile with Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol, a new twist on Dickens’ classic, running thru January 1. New Theatre presents Twain and Shaw Do Lunch, a witty play based on a lunch between Mark Twain & George Bernard Shaw, running thru December 18 at the New Theatre (in their new space).

Spend New Year’s Eve with legendary singer and songwriter Paul Anka, known for hits like “Diana” and “Put Your Head On My Shoulder,” who will be performing at the Hard Rock Live on December 31. Many of Miami’s hotels will host New Year’s Eve celebrations with scheduled performers. The Shelborne features Lauryn Hill as their headliner. 9 p.m. – 3 a.m. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) led by conductor Pinchas Zukerman performs an evening of classical music at the Broward Center on January 3. The King of Blues, B.B. King, takes the stage at the Arsht Center on January 4. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performer sings and plays the blues with relentless passion.

Funnyman Brad Garrett, known for his role as Robert Barone on the CBS comedy series Everybody Loves Raymond, brings his humor to the Hard Rock Live on December 30. Spend New Year’s Eve laughing with a night of stand-up comedy. Mike Epps and Friends perform at the James L. Knight Center on December 31 at 7 p.m.

The Santaland Diaries, a hilarious holiday rant based on David Sedaris’ New York Times bestseller Holidays on Ice plays at the Arsht Center thru December 23. Soul Doctor, an exhilarating and hilarious new Broadway-bound musical, plays at the Colony Theatre from December 24 – January 8. Soul Doctor tells the true story of the beloved and controversial father of popular Jewish music, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach.

Mad Cat Theatre Company presents Macbeth and the Monster, a new play for the entire family, running at The Light Box at Goldman Warehouse from December 28 – January 8. Area Stage Company’s Strangelove Group performs a staged reading of How I learned To Drive, a 1998 Pulitzer Prize Winner by American playwright Paula Vogel, on December 29 at Area Stage. Cirque Dreams Holidaze, a beautiful holiday show like only Cirque can offer, plays at the Au-Rene Theater of the Broward Center from December 27 – January 1. An original music score and some seasonal favorites accompany hundreds of spectacular costumes and holiday dreams in a setting of gigantic gifts, colossal candy canes, and 30-foot towering soldiers.

WIRED FLIX: THE ARTIST

THE ARTIST, a silent film about the end of silent movies, sails into South Florida this weekend on a big bright wave of acclaim. Leading actor Jean Dujardin won the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival, where the film was greeted with a fifteen-minute standing ovation. The film has picked up five Independent Spirit nominations, six Golden Globe nominations, and three Screen Actors Guild nominations. Regional associations of film critics from New York to San Diego have tied themselves in knots over THE ARTIST with awards for the actors, the director, the music – name it, it’s been recognized. And a lot of smart Hollywood hounds scent Oscar in the air. It’s a lot of fuss over a voiceless valentine to the movies, a delightful but by no means profound film. Why is this lovely flick on the fast track to Hollywood Legend Land? In part, it’s hype. THE ARTIST’s U.S. distributor is The Weinstein Company, and the Weinsteins know how to sell a movie. But THE ARTIST hits screens at a turning point in film history, a movie moment eerily similar to the one THE ARTIST dramatizes. The place: Hollywood, California, U.S.A. The time: 1927. George Valentin (Dujardin), an idol of the silver screen, has it all – and is about to lose it. For George is a star of silent movies, and talkies are coming in. The noisy new medium means that silent movies – and George’s career – are about to fade fast. Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo), a Hollywood newcomer, an extra in George’s latest film, is ready for the revolution. As her star rises, George’s falls and the matinee idol must make peace with the talkies or face Hollywood oblivion.

THE ARTIST has been widely praised for its relative historical accuracy. Indeed, 1927 was the year that talkies arrived and within a few years silent movies were history. For film buffs 2011 is 1927 all over again. It’s not that talkies are replacing silents; this time around, it’s digital projection replacing 35mm film. Since the movies began, their magic has been contained on a strip of silver-laden celluloid thirty-five millimeters wide. There’s no point in listing the great 35mm films – with very few exceptions, all movies, great, near-great and otherwise, were shot, cut, printed, and shown on 35mm film. Think of any star, all the great movie moments – they all appeared to audiences on film. Now that’s changing and digital projection is the new standard. Many welcome the change, although the transition has been anything but graceful. But for cineastes, it’s the end of an era, and no one’s too sure they’re going to like what’s coming. So film critics and film studios and audiences at Cannes and elsewhere, movie lovers all, are in the mood for a loving elegy to the movies, and they have fallen hard for THE ARTIST. It isn’t only a matter of timing; Martin Scorsese’s HUGO, a meditation on the mechanics and magic of movies, is also in theatres now and it’s getting good notices. But it’s not getting the warm waves of love that are washing over THE ARTIST. THE ARTIST doesn’t violate movie lovers’ sense of history; in fact, it recapitulates movie tropes dear to the cineaste’s heart. It’s shot in black and white, and the film’s story line – established male star falls as a new female star rises -- echoes A STAR IS BORN, which has been made and remade four times with icons like Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand in the Peppy Milleresque female role.

Silent movies often featured international casts – spoken language wasn’t an issue when nobody heard what actors were saying -- and THE ARTIST’S cast is international too. Dujardin is French, Bejo Argentinian and Americans John Goodman, James Cromwell and Penelope Ann Miller, not to mention Brit Malcolm McDowell, are also featured. Hard-core movie buffs will note that THE ARTIST isn’t really a silent film. It has a music track and a smattering of speech. DON JUAN, a feature film with an audio track – music and sound effects only – came out before the game-changing THE JAZZ SINGER made talkies the new normal. But now we’re getting into the weeds. You don’t have to be a film fanatic to enjoy THE ARTIST. Black and white is beautiful and the film’s stylized acting is a feature, not a bug. Leave the nostalgia and nitpicking to the buffs and succumb to THE ARTIST’S charms – you’ll be glad you did. THE ARTIST opens this weekend at the Coral Gables Art Cinema and other local cinemas.
