Cherishing Wisconsin’s Outdoors! Another amazing year of Field Trips awaits! The Natural Resources Foundation is especially excited to offer over 50 field trips to visit State Natural Areas (SNAs). Whether it be rare plants, animals, geology or archaeology — SNAs keep Wisconsin’s “best of the best” protected and secure. Join us in the field with experts to explore these natural gems, and learn more about the many facets of Wisconsin’s lands, waters & wildlife. We have trips for all ages & interests. So, bring a friend, child or grandchild along and discover something new about Wisconsin together! Costs & Fees: We try to keep costs low & use your dollars wisely. Trip fees help fund the Field Trip Programs (coordination, staff, printing, postage, and more). Some trips are also fundraisers for important conservation projects. Children on trips: “Family Friendly” trips are most suitable for children of the age recommendation listed, and thus child’s fees are noted. Children are welcome on all trips for $6 less than the adult fee listed, and must be accompanied by adults. Colored trip titles: Please double-check that a trip is a good fit for you. We want to make sure you are safe and comfortable. Trip title colors indicate their physical ratings. See page 1 for details. Registration At-a-Glance: • You must be a member of the Foundation to register for field trips. See page 36 for more registration details. • Some trips fill VERY quickly! Online registration shows the most current trip availability. • Please limit your registration to four trips. • You may register up to 5 guests. • Only register for one canoe/kayak trip per person due to high demand. • Please don’t register for trips you have done in the past.

Family-Friendly: One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is an appreciation for nature. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Age recommendations are listed for each trip. Child-friendly trips are identified with this symbol: Birds: Learn the science of bird conservation by banding, surveying, and photographing Wisconsin’s many birds. All of our birding trips are identified with this symbol: SNAs: Experience Wisconsin’s precious wilderness gems, our State Natural Areas (SNAs), guided by the conservationists who help protect them. So grab your binoculars & lace up your hiking boots. We have more than 50 trips to discover SNAs and learn more about Wisconsin’s most important, rare & fascinating lands, waters & wildlife!

Wisconsin’s 673 State Natural Areas (SNAs) provide some of the last refuges for rare plants & animals and protect outstanding examples of Wisconsin’s native plant communities, significant geological formations & archeological sites. The Foundation is focused on ensuring the future of these Wisconsin treasures by investing in SNA management and connecting caring donors with those SNAs in greatest need.

Some trips in this year’s field trip line-up are fundraisers for SNA management.

Think of the places that mean Wisconsin to you... Our State Parks, State Natural Areas, State Wildlife Areas and State Fishery Areas. How much do these places matter? How much do you want them to thrive for the next generation, and the one after that? 3 1. Paradise Valley Restored

Fifty years ago the Bark River was moved from its original course as part of a farm drainage project. Thanks to the Wetland Reserve Program, the river floodplain has returned, and is now part of the Paradise Valley Wildlife Area. Tour restored wetlands to view thriving wetland birds & waterfowl. 2. Prairie Chicken Booming on the Buena Vista

5. Paddle the Des Plaines River Watershed

An extensive wetland in Southeast Wisconsin is the source of the Des Plaines River and contributes to its widening as it travels through Illinois to the Mississippi. Explore diverse & rare species inhabiting Pine Island Wildlife Area. Hike along the Wisconsin River to discover floodplain forests. Help plant a few oak seedlings to assist restoration efforts. Designed for young birders, this trip is a learning opportunity & way for future biologists to network with adults in the field on a campus historically important to wildlife conservation... and have fun with other teens/tweens too! Transplanting nursery grown trees is common practice, but results in a high rate of failure. Growing trees from seed, however, makes for thriving saplings. Please double-check if a trip is a good fit for you. • You may register for only one canoe/kayak trip per person due to high demand. • Please don’t register for trips you have attended in the past.

Tips for online registration:

• No phone or email registrations accepted. • Have the names and contact information of all members in your party handy. • Some trips are popular and fill VERY quickly (some within minutes), so have a few back-up choices in mind. • If a trip is full, consider the waiting list (this will be an option during online registration).
