The Wisconsin MBA in Strategic Human Resource Management puts an emphasis on strategic thinking, and on quantifying the impact of human resource decisions on business performance. The program is designed for people who want to become leaders in the human resource field. It produces human resource generalists, consultants, and specialized professionals. In addition to a foundation in the functional areas of business, you will gain specialized knowledge relating to strategic management of human resources, including compensation, staffing, employee and labor relations, management of organizational change, and negotiation.

ARTS ADMINISTRATION Managers and business leaders of arts organizations provide an essential bridge between art, artists, and audiences. They combine the tools of business—management, marketing, accounting, finance, operations, negotiation—with the tools of communitybuilding—fundraising, development, education, outreach, volunteerism, partnership—to make thriving and vital spaces for arts and culture. The Wisconsin MBA in Arts Administration prepares students for the special challenges of working in arts and culture, with an emphasis on nonprofit, public, and community-based organizations. Students learn through intensive business coursework and hands-on project assistantships with campus and community organizations, providing significant work experience while in school. Part-time project-level appointments with the Madison Symphony Orchestra, Wisconsin Union, Overture Center for the Arts, Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission, Wisconsin Public Radio, UW-Madison Arts Institute, and other host organizations ensure a healthy mix of theory and practice throughout the program. Students also gain direct insight from innovative and experienced practitioners through a guest lecture series, alumni events and connections, on-line discussions, national conference participation, and real-world research projects and consultancies.

The Bolz Center for Arts Administration is one of the nation’s oldest and most respected business degree programs in arts and cultural management, and one of the few to offer an MBA. BRAND AND PRODUCT MANAGEMENT Cheerios, TurboTax, and Olay—what do they have in common? They are all brands that you could help manage very soon. The Center for Brand and Product Management is the nation’s first university-based center focused exclusively on training MBAs in brand and product management. What do brand, or product, managers do? They must act as corporate entrepreneurs, mobilizing internal resources to create value for customers and consumers. They must be able to craft, and execute, strategy and are often accountable for their brand’s overall profit and loss – excellent training for those aiming to assume corporate leadership roles. Our program offers innovative academic coursework—as well as hands-on training from industry leaders—to prepare you to excel in a number of environments. It lays the groundwork for you to go on from brand management to broader leadership roles such as general manager, entrepreneur, or CEO.

LEARN FROM EXCEPTIONAL MANAGEMENT FACULTY Faculty in the Management and Human Resources Department at the Wisconsin School of Business are thought leaders in many areas, including strategy, entrepreneurship, organizational learning and innovation, motivation, employee and executive compensation, employee turnover, and other aspects of human resources. Research by the faculty is widely published, and has had a major impact both in academic circles and on the practice of management. Management and Human Resources faculty seek answers to the questions of the day and bring their findings into the classroom.

The Weinert Center for Entrepreneurship is another valuable resource for Wisconsin students. The center is dedicated to teaching, research, and service in entrepreneurial management and enterprise development. Students with a wide range of interests may take classes in entrepreneurship and other related topics in preparation for roles as business owners and managers, venture capitalists, or consultants to smaller businesses. The department offers a graduate-level certificate in entrepreneurship to students who complete a series of classes in the area. The Business, Environment, and Social Responsibility program, housed within the Wisconsin School of Business, also offers a graduate-level certificate for completion of a series of classes focused on sustainability. This program’s mission is to provide students, executives, and organizations with education, knowledge, and tools in order to drive innovation in sustainable enterprise.
