About the property: Located on the Wisconsin River, Council Grounds is named for the Native Americans who once used the spot for annual councils and festivals. It features 508 wooded acres and 35 varieties of deciduous and coniferous trees, including sizeable tree stands planted by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s. For winter fun: Water activities on the river dominate in summer, but winter brings the chance for ice fishing, hunting and trapping, along with hiking and backcountry snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
KINNICKINNIC STATE PARK Find it: Pierce County, northwestern Wisconsin About the property: Wildlife watchers have plenty to see at this state park, located where the St. Croix and Kinnickinnic rivers meet. A variety of ecosystems plus the Kinnickinnic River Gorge and Delta State Natural Area support numerous animal species including as many as 90 species of birds.

For winter fun: Five of the park’s trails are open as multi-use areas in winter, with hiking, snowshoeing, skiing and skijoring allowed. Four other trails are designated for classic-only cross-country skiing, and fat tire bikes are permitted on the Red Trail. There’s also a sledding hill near the Brown Trail parking lot.
