Anyone can learn to sail and windsurf! The Hoofer Sailing Club welcomes beginning and experienced sailors of all ages. Established in 1939, today the club has over 1,200 members and a wide range of boats and sailboards.
During the winter when the lake freezes, try snow kiting. Learn from experienced kiters how to zip across Lake Mendota with a kite on skis or a snowboard.

Hoofer membership is open to UW-Madison students, faculty and staff and Wisconsin Union members. Anyone can join the Union for a small fee, call (608) 262-2263 or visit www. union.wisc.edu for Union membership information.

Getting Started: Ground School Come discover more about the club during a free ground school. All new members and anyone else who would like to learn more about the club should attend a ground school. You do not need to be a member to sign up. Easy Lesson Sign up Club members can conveniently sign up for lessons online. New lessons are posted weekly at www.hooferslessons.org. During peak season we offer over 180 lessons a week.
Escape to the Lake!
The Sailing Club holds socials every Friday night down by the piers. Other events include moonlight sailing, Pirate’s Day, Commodore’s Cup and more.

Start Racing! Beginning and advanced sailors can compete throughout the year. The club hosts weekly races to give sailors many opportunities to improve their skills. Hoofers also sponsors the UW Undergraduate Sailing Team and offers a number of opportunities to compete against other area sailors, like the Mendota Yacht Club.

Youth Sailing Sailors ages 10 to 18 can learn the basics of sailing and improve their skills in the Hoofer Youth Program. Several sessions are offered each week in sailing, windsurfing and kayaking/canoeing. See hooferyouth.org for more information.

Sailing and windsurfing instruction is included. Boat, board, and equipment use is included. Prices include a $30 work fee, which is refundable after the completion of 4 work hours, and a $35 work fee, which is refundable after the completion of 4 additional work hours (Monthly and Winter memberships are excluded). For example, a student can get an annual membership for $133 if they volunteer for 8 hours. * Winter membership upgradeable to annual membership by paying difference (eg. $109 for a student)
Boats of All Sizes Badger Techs, Badger Sloops, Lasers, 420s, C-Scows, E-Scows, I-20 Scows, J-22s, J-24s, Keelboats, Windsurfing and Snow Kiting equipment.
Teaching Opportunities Share your knowledge while spending your extra hours getting paid to sail! Teach others sailing or windsurfing while improving your own skills. Paid and volunteer positions available.
Winter Kiting Discover a whole new way to ski/snowboard. Strap yourself into one of our kites & fly across the frozen lake. Lessons taught year round.
