Northwoods Paddle & Hike: BWCA & Lake Superior Paddle, hike, and camp in the pristine wilderness of the north country! Spend three days on big water in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, then two nights on Lake Superior’s picturesque north shore. Hike the Split Rock River segment of the Superior Hiking Trail, and a stretch of trail along the Lake Superior shoreline. Classroom sessions will review needed gear and supplies in depth, and explain how you should prepare yourself physically. Learn the natural history of these unique areas and Leave No Trace principles. Novice back country trekkers welcome, participants must be in good physical condition. All permit, camping, paddling gear, and transportation costs are included. Must provide own camping gear, day hiking gear, or food. Responsible for providing and preparing foods that meets your own dietary needs. Two classroom sessions and a six-day trip. INSTRUCTOR: Heidi Conde is a former DNR educator and naturalist, and a seasoned outdoorswoman. She has paddled and hiked these areas and is an experienced outdoor trip leader.

Wisconsin River, Wisconsin Authors
Enjoy a day on the beautiful and scenic Wisconsin River, reflecting on Wisconsin authors influenced by this same river. We will begin in the home town of August Derleth (Sauk City) and bring Aldo Leopold and others along with us during an easy paddling day that will include sandbar stops and shared readings. Course fee includes transportation and canoe rental, provide own sack lunch. 1 Meeting. INSTRUCTOR: Kim Tschudy, lifelong resident of this area, author with five published books, and an experienced Mini Course instructor.

ON THE WATER Rowing – Learn to Row!
Learn one of the most rewarding ways to enjoy Madison lakes - learn to row! A quiet morning or evening pulling an oar through Lake Mendota, in synch with friends, will bring a smile to your face, sweat to your brow, and conditioning to your body. Even if you have never rowed before we will have you out on the water and rowing with a team. Meet good friends, improve your fitness, and enjoy teamwork while learning to row. Join the fun on Lake Mendota and learn to sail! Weather permitting; we will get you out on a mid-sized boat your very first day where the instructor will coach you on the basic maneuvers! The second and third classes will consist of significant on-water instruction on your very own Tech dinghy. Course Fee includes sailing handbook and $30 boat user fee which may be applied towards a Sailing Club Membership (allows for unlimited instruction and use of all sailing crafts, once certified). 3 Meetings. Sailing Dinner Cruise Pack your picnic basket and head down to the Union for a relaxing 3 hour evening sail on beautiful Lake Mendota. Marlinspike Seamanship
Marlinspike Seamanship is the art of working with line, knot-tying, splicing, whipping, decorative knots and more! Join in and learn some of these time tested skills! You will learn all kinds of practical knots, go over their uses, differences between types of line, and how to splice and whip three strand line. On the final day we will explore some decorative knots and you will take home a handmade gift! Course fee includes $10 user fee (can be applied to any current Hoofer Sailing Club membership, allowing for unlimited instruction, and use of all sailing crafts, once certified) and all materials including a rigging knife that is yours to keep (approx. $30 value). 2 Meetings.
