Part-Time Courses in Newham Starting September 2014

Welcome This new edition of Lifelong Learning gives details of over 300 classes which will be offered from September 2014 by Newham Adult Learning Service and other adult learning providers in Newham. There are even more courses for you to choose at times and locations across the borough. There are courses for different needs and lifestyles daytime, evening and weekend. So whether you are thinking about returning to study, or you need to gain extra skills or qualifications for your job, or you want to learn for pleasure, there should be a course in Newham for you.

How to find your class: First choose your course using the courses section: Courses Section: The courses are listed under section headings with details of day, time, duration and venue. Simply find the course you want and then find where it is by looking up the venue code (e.g. BGB = Beckton Globe) on the inside back index of venues. Venues Section: The venues are listed in alphabetical order and you are given the venue address and telephone number so that you can contact the course provider. The location of each venue is shown on the map.

How to enrol: You should enrol as soon as you can. Some centres will enrol throughout the summer whilst others will take personal enrolments from Monday 1st September. You are advised to ring the venue for details.

How much do courses cost? Tuition and exam fees vary across the training providers. The fee is normally payable before or at the start of your course. There may be an additional fee for entering an exam or for materials. Please check the full course cost when you enrol. The different categories of fee described below are for UK/EU Nationals and fees are generally higher for oversea students. To be eligible for a fully or part-funded course you must be either:

Nurturing Creative Talent...

ARE YOU OVER 24 YEARS OLD AND WANTING TO STUDY FOR A LEVEL 3 QUALIFICATION? WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT 24+ ADVANCED LEARNING LOANS? I f you are over 24 and applying for a Diploma course at Level 3 or above, you will need to pay the full course fee - there are no subsidised rates available to 24+ Level 3 learners. The full course fee covers ALL costs of your course including tuition, exam fee, CRB (where necessary) and linked course resources. Provided you meet all the criteria for studying at our centres and have been offered a place on your chosen course, there are 2 ways in which you can meet the cost: • You can pay the full fee yourself either as a one-off payment or in an agreed pattern of instalments • You can apply to the Student Loans Company for an interest free loan to cover the costs of your course fee. The monthly payment is made directly to Newham Adult Learning Service so you do not have to worry about making payments for your course once your loan is agreed

Lifelong Learning 2014/15

Although the loan from the Student Loan Company is repayable, repayments do not apply until you reach an annual income of approximately £21,000 and, in any case, at that point monthly repayments are very small. Newham Adult Learning Service fully supports the Student Loan application process for students as we are aware it can be daunting for those who have not applied for this type of loan before. If you are thinking about taking a Level 3 course and would like more information about applying for a loan, or have decided to take a loan and would like help with the application process, please contact:

Joanna Simmons on 020 8257 4680 or Ashley Pryer on 020 3373 0297 for more information and help with completing your loan application. You can apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan in respect of any course which is identified by the logo.

10 Family Learning Project

Family Learning Project • Want to know what your children learn at school? • Want to help your children to do better at school? • Want to improve your own English and Maths? • Want to gain a City & Guilds Qualification? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions then join a Family Learning course.

All parents want their children to do well at school but don’t always know where to start as a lot of things have changed since they were at school. Family Learning Courses help parents and carers to improve and develop their own and their children’s English, Maths, ICT and other skills. They also provide information to parents and carers about what children learn at school and how parents and carers can help their children to do even better. Family Learning courses are FREE and take place in schools and children’s centres during the week and at Adult Learning Centres on Saturdays. If you would like to join a Family Learning Course during the week then please contact your child’s school or your nearest Children’s Centre, alternatively if you are interested in Saturday courses then please come along to Forest Gate Learning Zone, 1 Woodford Road, London E7 0DH on Saturday 13th September 2014, 10am-12noon.

Newham Achievement and Employability Traineeship Programme • Aged ‘19 to 24’? • Unemployed with little or no work experience? • Working less than 16 hours per week with no real progression prospects? • Have less than 5 GCSE’s A*-C or Level 2 qualifications? • In receipt of benefits? Then you may be eligible to apply for the Newham Achievement & Employability Traineeship Programme.

Traineeships are an ideal opportunity for young people who are motivated to get a job but who lack the skills and experience that employers are looking for. If you have been unsuccessfully applying for Apprenticeships due to a lack of skills and experience then you might be a good candidate for a Traineeship. Traineeships can prepare you for your future career, helping you to get ready for the world of work and improving your chances of getting an Apprenticeship or other job.

For more information please email: newham.adultlearning@newham.gov.uk Or call Patrice Newsam, Traineeship Project Manager Tel: 020 3373 1896

VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED We are looking for volunteers to participate in our “Chatterbox” and “SpEC” (Speak English with Confidence) projects.

These projects are informal “coffee morning” style sessions where ESOL learners and any second language speaker can engage in volunteer led groups to discuss topics of their choice for an hour or two. Volunteers will receive in house training and if accepted on the SpEC project there is an opportunity to gain a Level 3 qualification in Volunteering. If you have excellent English skills (Level 2 or above), are interested in supporting people to improve their Spoken English skills and have a few hours to spare during the week, please contact: Elizabeth Howell NALS ESOL Coordinator Email: elizabeth.howell@newham.gov.uk Tel: 020 3373 0755
