The Power of Integrity

‘Integrity’ holds the dual senses of moral uprightness and wholeness. It includes the sense of trueness to self and others that develops when our words and actions coincide in honest and transparent ways. It also entails the spiritual work that has to do with integrating the different parts of ourselves and our relationships into a whole throughout our lives. We may see these two definitions as distinct and even at odds to each another, one moral and one psychological, when in fact they carry a synergy that belies a deep truth.

Hebrew scripture calls out regularly for integrity of heart and uprightness in our stance facing God and the world, and teaches us much about what righteousness can look like. We may not be aware, however, that our own sense of internal rightness with self (self-integrity) adds so much to our own sense of peace and well-being.

Matt Bloom, in Thriving in Ministry: How to Cultivate Clergy Well-being reminds us that, “We now know, for example, that people who have self-integrity—a balanced, secure, and positive identity—enjoy many benefits. They tend to have higher daily wellbeing and stronger resilience. They have better interpersonal relationships, including better marriages. They are positive leaders and valued work colleagues. They adjust well to myriad different life changes and challenges. Research shows, for example, that people with self-integrity deal very well with health challenges. They adjust much better and much faster to personal losses, such as the death of a loved one. People with self-integrity continue to grow and develop over their entire lives, especially in their senior years. They are vibrant, alive, and contributing to the lives of others and to the world around them.” (p. 37)

The key to understanding the connection between the two meanings of integrity is to recognize that an expansion of personal well-being leads to increased well-being of the whole as well. Dan Siegel argues in IntraConnected: MWE (Me + We) as the Integration of Self, Identity and Belonging, “With the internal embraced, we move to the relational; we integrate identity, broaden belonging. What arises is a synergy of self, an emergence of something from the Me and We that is integration made visible: kindness, compassion, love. (p. 49).

Seigel cites Robin Wall Kimmerer, who makes the point this way in her book, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants, “There are layers upon layers of reciprocity in this garden between the bean and the bacterium, the bean and the corn, the corn and the squash and ultimately with the people…. The beauty of the partnership is that each plant does what it does in order to increase it’s own growth, but as it happens when the individuals flourish, so does the whole.” (p. 38)

May our own ways of being and the partnerships that we engage in reflect ever more clearly the kindness, compassion and love of integration made visible.

Peace and blessings, Marian Diaz

We want to extend a HUGE & heartfelt thank you to everyone who colored drops as part of our community art project!

We received 76 drops and all were included in this beautiful collaborative artwork. Our Communications Strategist (and intuitive artist) Carly Swenson collected and laid out all the drops into this large mandala design. Values Statement

In a spirit of wisdom,

We honor the inherent dignity, particularity and wholeness of each human person.

We believe that each of us can call forth healing, growth, integration and expanded freedom for ourselves and each other.

We listen to and support the creative expression of spiritual wisdom across varied religious and secular ways of being.

We commit ourselves to inclusivity, accessibility and liberating justice on behalf of personal transformation and the transformation of the world.

Diversity Statement:

Wisdom Ways desires to create authentic, welcoming spaces that advance the spiritual growth, integration and fullness of life for all people. Wisdom Ways believes that an inherent part of that mission is ensuring the equality and inclusion of all persons, mindful of gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, class, disability, immigration status, religious beliefs, age, or any other diverse backgrounds. Acknowledging our purpose as a programming and story-sharing organization, we continually strive to offer a diverse community that features the voices of historically oppressed persons, elevating the shared wisdom of their experiences as a vital element of our mission and society.

An important aspect is accessibility. Committed to the inclusion of all persons, Wisdom Ways acknowledges the societal constructions which restrict and repel persons with disabilities and persons with cultural differences, such as the Deaf community, from attending and participating in on site and online events. Thus, we strive for the inclusion of all persons in our online and in person programming. For questions related to inclusion or to request accommodation, please email dclausnitzer@wisdomwayscenter.org or call (651)-696-2787.

Mission Statement:

Wisdom Ways creates open, accepting spaces that advance the spiritual growth, authenticity and fullness of life for all people. Our resources and offerings aim to help support movement into meaningful and impactful action to advance personal and communal well-being – and you won’t be doing it alone.

Gratitude & Condolences for the life & loss of Louie Doering (1945-2023)

Wisdom Ways is tremendously grateful for the years of compassionate engagement, support, and leadership Louie brought to the Men’s Centering Prayer group.

At age 78, Louis G. Doering, of Roseville passed away after a walk with his wife on March 13, 2023. Louie grew up as the oldest male of eight siblings in Duluth, Minnesota. He valued education and was a life-long learner. He worked as a Catholic elementary school principal, and on the executive staff of a local credit union. He was deeply involved in the cooperative development community. He spent his free time working at the Twins, kayaking, hiking in New Mexico, and traveling the world with his wife, Jill. He was immensely proud of his son Jack, and would tell anyone who listened about Jack’s adventures.

We are sorry for the loss and extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends, through this difficult time of loss.

You can help support our mission!

As we l ook forward to 2024, please consider making a donation supporting the mission and efforts of Wisdom Ways during your year end giving.

Wisdom Ways was established in 1994 as a Ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet – St. Paul Province, who build their ministries based on the mission of “moving always toward the profound love of God and neighbor without distinction.”

Thank You

to everyone who joined Wisdom Ways for our second-annual Summer Solstice Celebration! Your attendance, support, and help promoting this event made it a tremendous success! We couldn’t have asked for better weather. It was a delight to see families, friends, neighbors, and our CSJ community out enjoying the sun, music, labyrinths and connection. We’re excited to continue this tradition next year! Here are some pictures from our event.

Labyrinths

We have a new wheelchair/walker accessible labyrinth for rent!

This year we comissioned the talented Lisa Moriarty, from Paths of Peace, to create a new labyrinth for Wisdom Ways. With a wider path and a textured surface for easy movement without slipping, this labyrinth is also ideal for social distancing because the path leads through the center and out the opposite side. Of course, anyone is welcome to use and rent this labyrinth, but it’s an ideal option for those with mobility impairment.

Wisdom Ways rents beautiful labyrinths of all sizes for rituals, celebrations, meditation, games, and dancing. Items can be picked up or shipped (for an additional charge). Renters are responsible for all shipping fees, including international custom fees (when applicable). Interested? Contact the Wisdom Ways office at office@wisdomwayscenter.org or call 651-696-2794.

www.wisdomwayscenter.org/resources

How to Use a Labyrinth:

Before entering hold an intention, question, prayer, or calming image in your mind and begin walking. • Simply walk the path. As you concentrate on your steps, allow everything else to melt away. • Upon reaching the center, sit or stand with your eyes closed or looking downward • Take 3 deep breaths and reflect on how you feel. Be still and present. • When you are ready, begin walking back to the entrance. • While walking back, return to the question, prayer, or image you began with. • After walking. Try journaling. What did you discover?

Would you like to try it? On our YouTube channel, we have videos available of both table labyrinths and walking the outdoor labyrinths!

Outdoor Labyrinths

On-Site

Both on-site labyrinths are free to use & open to the public during daylight hours.

Large 11-circuit grass & paver

Chartres-style labyrinth is located near St. Catherine’s University. Tucked away in the extensive grassy area behind (or south of) the CSJ’s Carondelet Center.

Small 3-circuit garden labyrinth is located near St. Catherine’s University. On a green space between (east of) the O’Shaughnessy Auditorium and (west of) the CSJ’s Carondelet Center.

Do you enjoy podcasts, but struggle with the sheer volume of options?

Would you like to start listening to new voices in spirituality, but aren’t sure where to start?

With the support of a grant from the Ministries Foundation, Wisdom Ways is working with a local developer to create an app that will curate content including podcasts and videos on spiritual and religious themes. As we continue to develop our infrastructure and platform we want to find ways to support the needs of our existing participants while reaching out to a younger and more diverse audience. This app will also have a simple web-based version for people who do not use or are not comfortable with phone based apps. This project will complement the work going on in the usage of our digital studio and will support the promotion of Wisdom Ways’ own content as well. Do you have a favorite podcast or YouTube channel recommendations we should consider for inclusion?

Please share with us what spirituality-related podcasts you enjoy and what you like about them by using the QR code below or by clicking the link at: www.wisdomwayscenter.org/media

“Integrity is your destinyit is the light that guides your way.”
–Plato

The quality of our integrity and relationships flow largely through how we communicate with each other. Consider how conversational intelligence plays a part in your life by way of the following quote-

“At the Creating WE Institute, we have surveyed more than four thousand leaders across all industries and at all levels in their organizations. Through our research we have identified the two least-developed skills in the workplace: the ability to have uncomfortable conversations and the ability to ask “what if” questions. As you will see, both these skills are essential to building and sustaining trust, and to being candid and caring with one another. Many conversations are difficult. If we can’t feel safe enough to have difficult conversations in an open and honest way, we will never get to a place where we can transform our culture.”

- Glaser, Judith E.. Conversational Intelligence (pp. 29-30). Taylor and Francis. Kindle Edition.

Conversational Intelligence helps to move us from a place of distrust to a place of trust. How do you engage in uncomfortable conversations with people in your life?

How would you rate your ability with this skill? Why?

Do you open yourself up to imagining new ways of being and acting in the world?

Actions: Ask two “what-if” questions today and reflect on what response you received.

Interested in improving your conversational intelligence? Consider joining our upcoming reading group discussion of “Conversational Intelligence” by Judith Glaser

Christian Meditation is a form of contemplative prayer in which we move beyond words, thoughts, and images. We open ourselves to God’s mysterious and silent presence within us which becomes more and more the reality of our lives. From this place of prayer, we engage in our work in the world. During these times of prayer, we will sit in silent meditation with others. Meditating together is a way of deepening and supporting our personal practice. The weekly sessions include a short reading and one 25-minute meditation.

Advent Lectio Divina

(In-Person) w/ Pat Jones

Mondays, Nov 27 & Dec 4, 11, 18

10:15-11:15 am CT

Lectio Divina or Sacred Reading is the slow, repetitive reading of a sacred text that leads one to the ultimate step of resting in God. It is not Scripture study, nor is it spiritual reading. It is an invitation to take a long, loving look at Scripture. It is a time for falling in love with the Word and experiencing the goodness of God. This four-step process for being with Scripture in a prayerful manner includes: Reading (Lectio); Meditating (Meditatio); Praying (Oratio); and Contemplating (Contemplatio). Using texts from Sacred Scripture, you will experience this ancient prayer form in a group setting, though it is easily adapted to individual practice and can be incorporated into your private prayer life.

Opening the Channels to Spiritual Guidance

(3 sessions) w/ Scott McRae

Tuesdays, Dec 5, 12, & 19 | 7-8:30 p.m. CT

Hybrid, $130 In-person | $115 Online

My interest in the nature of the soul, and what happens to it when the body dies, has formed after many years of being a chaplain. I’ve heard several people share in whispers, even with embarrassment, experiences of leaving their bodies through their near-death-experiences. Being something of a skeptic, I’ve been exploring what life after life might be like. In this class, I will share parallel views of the soul’s journey as they appear in various religious, spiritual, and indigenous perspectives. I’ll share some conclusions that I have reached related to the healthy and unhealthy views of the soul and Spirit following our death. At the same time, more important to me than the specifics of this soul journey is the life-giving shift that we make in this world as we move from fear to wonder about the life that comes after our lives.

Session 1: Releasing Ego & Finding the Link

Session 2: Journey into the Soul & Cleansing the Link

Session 3: Experiencing the Spirit & Being Linked
