Trump said that he called up his credit card company to find out whether their customer support is based in the US or overseas. “Guess what, you’re talking to a person from India. How the hell does that work?” he told his supporters in Delaware. “So I called up, under the guise I’m checking on my card, I said, ‘Where are you from?’” Trump said and then he mimiced the Indian accent. “We are from India,” Trump impersonated the response.

Uttarakhand Crisis are courts going overboard

The Uttarakhand high court said that the President’s decision to suspend the state assembly is “open for judicial review” as even he can go “horribly wrong”. The bench of Chief Justice K M Joseph and Justice V K Bist “hoped” that the government would not “provoke” the court by revoking President’s Rule till a verdict is delivered on the petition challenging its imposition. 30

The bench said: “There is nothing like unreviewability. We are not sitting here to judge the political wisdom of the President. People can go wrong. A President or judge may be an excellent person, however he (President) can also go horribly wrong.” “There is no king or absolutism. However high you are, the law is above you. there were 27 BJP MLAs and 9 Congress MLAs who sought division on March 18. There is absolutely no material for the cabinet to say that 35 MLAs sought division. The Governor’s report is silent on this. This is very crucial,” said the bench. “Why is it the concern of the Governor. Does that warrant imposition of President’s Rule? This is irrelevant. And I must say that I’m shocked,” said the bench. “Why was the complaint filed on April 5 after President’s Rule was imposed? We were WWW.AZWISHESH.COM | MAY 2016

thinking why the Speaker has double standards (that he disqualified the nine rebel Congress MLAs but kept the complaint against Arya pending). This is terrible. You are making such terrible allegations (against the Speaker). Is this how Government of India functions? What do you (Centre) have to say about this? This is not to be taken lightly as that (Speaker’s conduct regarding disqualification) was also the basis of President’s satisfaction. We are taking a serious note of this,” said the bench.

The over enthusiasm in blaming the central government and making unnecessary comment on the President of India by the Uttarakhand high court has surprised many. The courts remarks were seen as a biased approach in favouring the Congress and Harish Rawat government. Elated Rawat and his men had taken as many as 11 cabinet decisions in two cabinet meetings. However, his reinstation was only a one night stand, when the Supreme court stayed the High court’s order. A bench

Everything has to be looked into a balance has to be struck,” said the bench as it expressed displeasure at the High Court for not releasing a written judgment. It asserted: “There has to be

a balance. We are slightly concerned…Article 356 (Presidential proclamation) is a serious matter for both sides…there are a few matters of propriety. If the High Court had signed the judgment, we could have looked into it. For a party to take remedial action, a written order has to be there.” Justice Singh said: “If I were the High Court judge, I would have made my judgment operational only after three or four days when it is signed and ready. It is more on propriety than legality.

Governance of a state cannot be left in the lurch.” “Interference by a constitutional court in exercise of its power of judicial review pertaining to justifiability of Presidential proclamation is a serious issue. We will take on record the copy of the judgment and go through it. This matter may go to a Constitution bench,” observed the bench.

Aircraft Deal in the final stage

34

Defence minister Manohar Parrikar has said that the Rafale aircraft deal with France it is not complete as yet, but at an “advanced stage” and the intention is to “close it quite soon”.

WWW.AZWISHESH.COM | MAY 2016

The government “saved” public money and the deal has resulted in a gain of “technological knowledge” and “strengthening the air power to defend the border”, it had said. “I can only tell you this much that while the deal is in quite an advanced stage, and we intent to close it quite soon, I still can’t say that negotiations are totally cleared until we sign the deal or at least the deal is forwarded to the Cabinet for approval,” Parrikar said. The cost of the 36 Rafales, as per the earlier tender, comes to around Rs 65,000 crore. India has been bargaining for a price that is less than 8 billion Euro (Rs 59,000 crore). “The deal to buy 36 state-of-the-art Rafale aircraft from France at 12 billion dollar (Rs 80000 crore) was re-negotiated and finalised at 8.8 billion dollar (around Rs 59000 crore),” the BJP tweet said. The government “saved” public money and the deal has resulted in a gain of “technological knowledge” and “strengthening the air power to defend the border”, it had said. Rafales are twin-engine Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA)

manufactured by Dassault Aviation, a French firm. Rafale fighter jets are positioned as ‘omnirole’ aircrafts that are capable to perform a wide-range of combat roles such as air supremacy, interdiction, aerial reconnaissance, ground support, in-depth strike, anti-ship strike and nuclear deterrence. Six renowned aircraft manufacturers competed to bag the contract of 126 fighter jets, which was touted to be the largest-ever defence procurement deal of India. The Initial bidders were Lockheed Martin’s F-16s, Boeing’s F/A-18s, Eurofighter Typhoon, Russia’s MiG-35, Sweden’s Saab’s Gripen and Rafale. All aircrafts were tested by the IAF and after careful analysis on the bids, two of them — Eurofighter and Rafale — were shortlisted. Dassault bagged the contract to provide 126 fighter jets, as it was the lowest bidder and the aircraft were said to be easy to maintain.

Elampillai handlooms are well known for the durability of the colours used in the yarn. The quality of colour gives the durability. The count used in weaving gives the softness and hardness of the fabric. Count means the number of threads used in the length and breadth for weaving known as warp and weft respectively. In Elampillai the count used is 80 by 80 for weaving. The width of the saree comes to 51 inches. Each and every thread of the Elampillai handloom saree is hand woven. The process of manufacturing an Elampillai handloom Saree starts with dyeing the silk yarn. Dyeing is the coloring process of the yarn by dipping the yarn in the boiled color water in very high temperature, higher the temperature durability of colour will be more. Dyeing of the yarn is done making sure that the color is spread uniformly throughout the yarn and it does not affect the quality of the yarn. The coloring process is a very crucial step in getting a good colourful saree. The colours are applied as per the specifications of the designers and also some times as per the orders from customers who orders for a designer Saree. After coloring, the silk yarn is dried in shade. Drying yarn in sun can be harmful to yarn.

Weaving After dyeing and drying the yarn it is converted to thread

and is loaded as warp which is called pavvu and then it is loaded into the loom for actual weaving. It is also rolled over small sticks to use for weft. One pavvu will make 13 sarees. It will take 1 month to complete weaving of one pavvu. Elampillai handloom sarees are traditionally woven in the interlocked-weft technique.

Designs The

design required on the saree is initially drawn in a computer and then this is punched into a card and these cards are loaded in Jacard in the loom. Jacard is a box like structure which is fixed in the top of the loom. There will be needles in the Jacard which

industry in Elampillai

Due to the high cost of silk yarn now the weavers of Elampillai struggling to continue in the profession. Now there are only very few weavers weaving Elampillai silk handloom products. Once famous Elampillai Handloom products are now becoming extinct due to the high cost of silk yarn and low wages prevailing in the industry. Previously Elampillai was full of talented weavers who used to do magic in the looms to produce the best handloom products. There is an emergency situation to take necessary action to protect the traditional Elampillai handloom products.

Voice of handloom weaver’s

The weavers of Elampillai blame the mushrooming

power looms for the high cost of silk yarn. The weavers demand a responsible role by the government to protect the handloom industry by providing subsidy for yarn and a rehabilitation package for the weavers who are suffering due to high cost of yarn and low wages prevailing in the industry. They hope that if the government takes the responsibility to support the handloom industry by way of showcasing and marketing the handloom products, the industry can survive or else the present situation has started the end of handloom industry in Elampillai. The new generation is not interested in the profession

due to the hard labour and long hours to bring out the finished product, the returns are also not lucrative to make them stay in the profession. Due to the non availability of weavers the handloom industry is fastly shifting to power looms.

BAZIGAR with ethnical identity

46

WWW.AZWISHESH.COM | MAY 2016

Bazigars are a nomad gipsy-folk of India and Pakistan who are found throughout North India. They live a different life from the surrounding Hindu population and still preserve the ethnical identity.

T

They mostly make their livings as jugglers, makers, basket-weavers and fortune-tellers and in true European gipsy fashion each clan has its king. They are found in the states of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

The Bazigar are further subdivided into five sub-groups, the Jogi, Badtia (vertiya), Mushal (muchhals), Dharamsot and Namsout. The first four sub-divisions cannot intermarry, but Namsout only marry within the clan. The Bazigar were either Hindu or Muslim, but with the departure of their Muslim patrons, the Bazigar have embraced Sikhism. They have also abandoned their traditional dialect Bazigar boli for standard Punjabi.

The name Bazigar is derived from the Urdu word bazi, which means an acrobat. They claims to be Chauhan Rajputs, who took the occupation of acrobatics to escape the persecution and attempts of forcefull convertion to Islam during the period of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. They have now been granted Scheduled Caste status in Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. The Bazigar speak their own dialect, known as bazigar boli, while speaking in Hindi with outsiders.

Centuries Ahluwalia WWW.AZWISHESH.COM | MAY 2016

Ahluwalia is derived from a place name Ahlu + -walia, a Panjabi adjectival suffix. According to Ibbetson (1916), Ahlu is the name of a village near Lahore which was founded by Sada Singh Kalal, a man of the Kalal community. The Ahluwalia or Ahluwale Caste are a Punjabi community in the Punjab region of northwestern India. There are many stories regarding the Ahluwalia community. The identity of Ahluwalia caste is that of ‘Kalal’. Kalal is a caste of professional distillers and wine-sellers. During 18th century , one of the member of Kalal caste by the name of Jassa Kalal converted to Sikhism and rose to prominence . His descendants started calling themselves ‘Ahluwalia’ because Jassa Kalal was from the village ‘Ahlo’. Ahluwalia is a Sikh clan from India, that originated from a misl of the same name; the name Ahluwalia is derived from Ahlu, the ancestral village of the misl leaders. The Ahluwalia misl was one of the 12 major Sikh misls, and held land to the north of Sutlej river. Sultan ul Quam Nawab Jassa Singh Ahluwalia was born at the village of Ahlu, in Lahore district of Punjab, (Majha region), in

the year 1718. Ahlu village was established by his ancestor, Sadda singh, a disciple of the sixth Sikh Guru, Guru Har Gobind. His forefathers were Kalals (wine merchants) and hence, he is also referred to as “Jassa Singh Kalal”. Jassa Singh, is said to have been the most powerful and influential chief that the Sikhs ever had till the rise of Ranjit Singh. The Ahluwalias ruled Kapurthala, a district in the Panjab which was once a small princely state.

PTSD

Risk increases with lower fat Hormone levels A new research revealed that people with low fat hormone levels are more prone to post-traumatic stress disorder ( PTSD ) symptoms, upon exposure to a traumatic event.

WWW.AZWISHESH.COM | MAY 2016

PTSD individuals relive past traumas over and over again as they will be bound in a virtual prison of memories. The University of Texas Health Science Centre in the US, School of Medicine professor and study senior author Xin-Yun Lu said, “Once the threat is no longer there, the fear should go away, but in PTSD it keeps flashing back.” The research findings could help in the development of new PTSD treatment. Injecting the adiponectin hormone, which is secreted by fat cells called adipocytes, showed to decrease fear in PTSD mouse model. The mouse were trained to associate with a setting containing mild unpleasant stimulus. The mouse showed

a fear response, as expected, when exposed to the setting again. Fearful memories were formed in the mice, which lacked adiponectin like healthy mice. But they could not let the fear go easily, when they were placed again in the same setting without unpleasant stimulus. But, the mice in which adiponectin was injected before training, showed faster learning in overcoming fear, according to the measurements. Lu noted that, “In the PTSD animal model, the circulating adiponectin is low, data suggest. If the genes encoding adiponectin and its receptor are disrupted, the mice extinguish fear responses much slower. If adiponectin levels are

elevated in the brain, the mice get extinction faster.” Adiponectin impairment is implicated in metabolic diseases like Type-2 diabetes and obesity. Lu said that the hormone has an effective role to play beyond its metabolic control, as per the new research that was published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry. “It is interesting that this hormone promotes fear extinction. Increasing adiponectin levels or activating its specific receptors might facilitate extinction-based exposure treatments for PTSD and other trauma- and stressrelated disorders,” Lu noted.

Do not Worry if your

Kid Talks Back! 72

Is your kid talking back? It may drive you crazy, but do not worry! It is a way to help them become happier and more successful adults. True! The concept is the one agreed by experts and Psychologists. According to experts, “Kids talking back” is actually developmentally healthy for them. The inability to say “No” that means the inability to set personal boundaries is a common cause for human suffering. If your kid is pushing back, it is not a great sign for their development. They should be able to go forward and negotiate. As per a Psychologist Joseph P. Allen, who was the head of a study conducted for the University of Virginia, “We tell parents to think of those arguments not as a nuisance but as a critical training ground.” If your kids are pushing back your authority as a parent, WWW.AZWISHESH.COM | MAY 2016

they are able to exert a sense of control over their lives. And it is a skill that they are practicing with you. They are trying to negotiate with you. That means they are learning those critical negotiation skills required to stand up to pressure or danger, while taking crucial decisions of life. Isn’t that great?

Grasp the message early on! It is important for parents to understand that kids come into the world with their own paths to follow. They actually begin to teach this lesson to us at a very early age. Their deeds are one way of veritably screaming at us: “It’s not about you; it’s about me!”

All you have to do is teach your child to challenge you with respect. Set expectations and positive examples of appropriate communication. Help them understand that they have to be responsible for the consequences of their actions. Train them to practice control with grace, respect, self-awareness and calmness. This helps your child negotiate well during adverse or risky circumstances. Kids are independent beings with their own thoughts, ideas and feelings. It is their journey and it is just your privilege to supervise their journey!

The 10th or 11th century Lingaraj temple of Bhubaneswar has been described as “the truest fusion of dream and reality”

as ‘time quintessence of Orissan architecture’. Sanskrit texts hold that there was a stone temple here as early as the seventh century AD, and fragments of this earlier structure do seem to appear in the extant building. The deul (tower) of the Lingaraj temple reaches a height of just over 180 feet (55 meters). It is completely curvilinear, and

the extraordinary soaring tower can be seen to incorporate miniature replicas of itself, in turrets inserted on the ribs of the spire. In addition to the deul and the Jagmohana (porch), the Lingaraj temple adds two other structures: Natyamandira - hall of dance, which is undoubtedly associated with the prominent devadasi system and Bhogmandap - hall of offering. By the time the Lingaraj temple was constructed, the Jagannath cult had become predominant throughout Orissa. This has reflected in the fact that the temple deity here, the Svayambhu linga, is not, as in all other cases, strictly a Shiva linga. It is considered to be a ‘Hari-Hara’ linga, that is, half Lord Shiva and half Lord Vishnu. There are 150 subsidiary shrines within the immense Lingaraj temple complex.

Mukteswar Temple

Mukteswar Temple

The small and elegant Mukteswar temple (AD 950) is often referred to as the “miniature gem of Orissan architecture”. In addition to its beauty, the Mukteswar temple has importance as a transition point between the early and later phases of the Kalinga School of temple architecture. Many elements of the old with new designs and conceptions are successfully combined. Many of the innovations took root and became essential features of all later temples. Mukteswar temple is known

as the “harbinger of the new culture”. The relationship with older structures can be immediately seen in the small size of the temple - 35 feet (11 meters) high at the pinnacle of the tower. The latticed windows of the ‘Jagmohana’ (porch) and the octagonal compound wall seems to have been patterned on an earlier structure which now exists only in fragmentary form. Muktesvara temple’s stunningly beautiful gateway was strongly based on the earlier architecture. The ‘Torana’ (arched gateway) of the Mukteswar temple deserves special attention. It’s extraordinarily beautiful sculpture includes elaborate scrolls, graceful female figures, monkeys, peacocks, and a wealth of delicate and lovely decorative detail. The Jagmohana building here has become a structure in its own right, and is seen as the later shape of a terraced pyramid (although the internal shape has not become a real square). Over the doorway to the inner sanctum, the ninth planet of the Indian astrology (Ketu, identified by the canopied, three hooded snake) can be seen. On the eastern side of the temple compound is a sacred tank, and in the south west corner is a well which is said to cure fertility problems. Several small shrines can be seen within the compound, many with lingam inside. MAY 2016 | WWW.AZWISHESH.COM

Parsurameswar Temple

78

The Parsurameswar temple (650 AD) is the earliest temple, and is based on style, as well as on the eight planets which appear over the door to the inner sanctum. In later temples, there are nine. This small temple shows the early stages of development of the two main Orissan temple components: the beehive-shaped tower (generally referred to as the deul) and the porch in front of the tower (generally called the Jagmohana). The tower is built in successive, inwardtapering stories, marked by loti form corner pieces. Light enters the interior through skylights, doors, and pierced latticed windows. The rectangular niches running around the base of the porch contain images of diverse deities. Although this was a Siva temple, it is interesting to note that images of Vishnu, as well as the Vedic nature deities of Indra, Surya and Yama appear, in addition to a group of seven mother Goddesses. On the southern wall is a fine image of Karttikeya (one of the sons of Siva) riding on a peacock, his traditional mount.

Rajarani temple The Rajarani temple, dating back to the eleventh century, is set in open paddy fields, WWW.AZWISHESH.COM | MAY 2016

and the entire structure exudes grace and elegance. The name Rajarani is related to the lovely red-and- gold sandstone used in its construction, a stone which is locally known as Rajarania. The deul (tower), is spectacularly ornate, and is famous for the aesthetic concept of miniature temple spires clustered around the main tower. The sculptural images of the temple are elegant and lively, especially the beautiful female figures which can be seen in amorous dalliance, as well as engaged in such activities as holding children, looking in mirrors, and playing with pet birds. On the lower register of the deul, on the corner projections, are found the famous ‘Guardians of the Eight Directions’, watching over and radiating the temple’s power to the eight cardinal points. Beginning from the left of the entrance to the deul and proceeding in a clockwise direction, they are: Indra (east, chief of the 33 Vedic nature deities); Agni (south-east, Vedic God of fire); Yama (south, God of death); Nirriti (south-west, deity related to suffering); Varuna (west, a Vedic deity of the ocean); Vayu (north-west, wind God); Kubera (north, lord of wealth, shown here with a wish-fulfilling tree); and Ishana (north-east, a form of Shiva).

Vaital Temple The Vaital Temple (AD 800) represents the Khakhara order

(a subdivision of the Kalinga School of architecture) which was used for shrines devoted to tantric cults. The deul (tower) of the temple has the most striking difference. It is rectangular in shape, positioned at a right angle to the Jagmohana (porch). A brief look at the Vaital Temple will show an extremely accomplished style of sculptural decoration. The temple was dedicated to Tantric worship, which combined elements from certain sects of both Buddhism and Hinduism, centered on the worship of Shakti, the female life force. It developed elaborate rituals involving magic spells, secret rituals and sacrificial offerings. The interior of the Vaital Temple’s inner sanctum is almost completely dark, in keeping with the esoteric rites believed to have been performed there. The temple deity is of Chamundi (tantric form of the Hindu goddess Durga) is dimly visible behind the grille, portrayed with a garland of skulls around her neck, seated on a corpse, flanked by an owl and a jackal. Her emaciated body, sunken eyes, and shrunken belly are quite remarkable. On the outer, eastern face of the tower there is an extremely fine image of the sun god, Surya, with a sensitive and beautiful face. He is flanked by Usha and Pratyusha, twin sisters

This is a motif that later developed fully in the Sun Temple at Konark. The first erotic sculptures known in Orissan art are found here, in a sunken transitional panel on the super-structure. It has been suggested that these images, which are a sort of catalogue of positions, had real relevance to the tantric rituals of this particular temple.

was carved into cave like chambers in the face of the hill. These caves, with artistic carvings date back to the 2nd century BC. The magnificent artistic carvings are the Rani Gumpha (Queen’s Cave) and the Hathi Gumpha (Elephant Cave) are of special attention. The Hathi Gumpha has carved chronicles of King Kharavela’s reign of 1st - 2nd century BC. Khandagiri, with its 15 caves on the left and Udayagiri on the right.

80

The rocks of the Khandagiri and Udayagiri hills were carved and tunneled, to create this multi-storied ancient apartment residence for Jain monks. They were the work of the first known Orissan ruler, King Kharavela, and probably begun in the first century BC. Kharavela was a king of the Mahameghavahana dynasty, who is known for expansion of the Kalinga Empire and his installation of public improvements, such as canal systems. His queen was evidently quite a patron of the arts, and probably had much to do with the impressive sculptural decoration of the caves. The 18 caves of Udayagiri include the famous Hathi Gumpha (‘Elephant Cave’) with its famous inscription of Kharavela from which we can learn much about Kharavela’s military exploits, gated towers of his royal city, bathing and drinking tanks, the scenes of formally organized music WWW.AZWISHESH.COM | MAY 2016

and dance performances, as well as sporting and social events. The famous Rani Gumpha (‘Queen’s Cave’), also on Udayagiri, has upper and lower stories, a spacious courtyard, and elaborate sculptural friezes. The carvings show popular legends, historical scenes, and religious functions, as well as many dancers. The Ganesh Gumpha, which is reached by a walkway from the lower storey of the Rani Gumpha, is isolated, and perhaps for this reason, better preserved. Its two dwelling-spaces with verandah in front are reached by a short staircase from the courtyard. All of the caves are small, and follow the natural configurations of the ‘living rock’. The sculpture throughout exhibits a strong, lively folk element, which has been executed with a sure and confident hand. The spaces are filled with animal, human, and divine personages and decorative details, showing the love of the Orissan artist for richly elaborated scenes. In Khandagiri there is a magnificent Jain temple which can be seen from Udayagiri.

It is here that Asoka, the terrible, was transformed into Asoka, the compassionate. Asoka erected two main edicts in Kalinga, one in Dhauli and the other in Jayagarh. The principles of Asoka which reflects his compassion were inscribed on all the other edicts in his empire except Kalinga. In the Kalinga edicts he warned the people of Kalinga not to revolt and that he would take appropriate action if they did. This is in sharp contrast to all of his other edicts and proof of his political acumen. The edicts are remarkably well preserved, despite the fact

The Shanti Stupa or the peace pagoda, built through the IndoJapanese collaboration, in the early seventies by the Japan Buddha Sangha and Kalinga Nippon Buddha Sangha is in Dhauli Giri. From the top of Dhauli Giri we can see the battle field of the infamous Kalinga war. The river which flows side by is the Daya river which was first known as Kamini and then called Koon Pyasi due the blood of the battlers of the Kalinga war was flown into this river. When Emperor Asoka repented for the war

and changed his mind to embrace Buddhism the river was renamed as Daya Nadhi.

Chousathi Yogini Temple On the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, 15 km southeast of the city at Hirapur is a small, circular temple, the Yogini Temple, dating to the early ninth century. It is hypaethral (open to the sky), and belongs to a genre of architecture completely apart from the major Orissan school. Although it seems that temples of this type existed throughout India at one time, today only four remains. Two of them are in Orissa; the shrine at Hirapur, and one in the far

western reaches of the state, at Ranipur-Jharial. The temple’s circular wall, which is barely 2 metre high, contains 64 niches within its inner circumference. All except one of these contain an image of a Yogini Goddess. Some of the Goddesses are portrayed with sensual bodies and jeweled bodices, others with horrific shrunken features, still others with animal heads. Even today, standing in the deserted temple with bright sunshine pouring in, one senses a strange emanation from the temple, and this feeling is in keeping with its original purpose. cults responsible for these temples worshipped Yogini Goddesses in expectation of the direct acquisition of supernatural powers. The Yoginis were thought to be able to confer on their devotees the power to become microscopic or gigantic in size, to control the body and mind of oneself and of others, to fly, become invisible, and myriad other useful abilities.

82

Locally known as Mahamaya Mandir, this hypaethral shrine facing east was discovered in 1953 by Kedarnath Mahapatra of the Orissa state Museum. The circular shrine measures 27.4 metre in circumference and 2.4 metre in height, have a frontal projection resembling “Yoni” (Vagina) female reproductive organ. The inner parts of the temple is made of locally available coarse sandstone, it harbours images of Yoginis. The pillar like structure in the middle of the temple represents the Penis – male reproductive organ. The image of Ten-armed presiding deity of the pitha is worshiped as Mahamaya and is the largest among the Yoginis. Whereas in the centre exists a lately restored Chandi Mandap displaying 4 Saivite figures and Yoginis, the entirely delicately rendered imagery notable for feminine beauty is carved in chlorite brought from elsewhere. Apart from being identified as an action hero through some notable films like Bunny, Badrinath, Race gurram, Rudramadevi etc, he still managed to look at experiments too. TECHNOLOGY

The usage of GPS devices has no boundaries. It starts from navigating unfamiliar cities to locating missing people. Further, the advances in GPS devices made them more useful and accurate. GPS sensors are usually placed on the objects so as to track them. The technology is highly useful for scientific exploration/experimentation, fleet vehicle management and even in finding missing people. GPS sensors are used in the horse racing industry for delivering realtime data at the time of races. 94

The real-time data delivered through sensors are widely used across organizations in the sectors like law enforcement, entertainment, consumers and government entities. The technology is widely used even for governmental purposes by attaching sensors to missiles and planes. Leveraging the technology, the military personnel can plan proper resolution and attack positioning in situations like that of wartime. GPS devices aid in military targeting. They can be attached to airborne items for tracking missile paths, aircraft flight patterns and bombing patterns. The data WWW.AZWISHESH.COM | MAY 2016

provided by the sensors would be helpful in analyzing and planning the targeted attacks. It is possible to check for the correct coordinates for an attack through other GPS locating devices. GPS devices are even ideal for marine use like satellite phone communications, satellite weather reports and depth reading technology. Combining the GPS

technology with the internet helps in revealing your location. However, in many cases GPS in the device must be turned on or enabled. These are few cases where GPS is placing a crucial role. Is it not revolutionary and signifying that technology evolves with society? Adaptation to GPS is simply adding convenience to every day life!

Do not make these Shampoo

Mistake

WWW.AZWISHESH.COM | MAY 2016

Many of us make few basic mistakes while shampooing, which would actually leave us in surprise. Here are few mistakes to be avoided while shampooing, which is a fairy routine habit! Do not go for wrong shampoo Choose a shampoo that is apt for your hair type. For this you have to first determine the kind of hair you have, like if it is oily, brittle, dry, etc. To determine this, you may even consult a trichologist or a hair stylist. They will help you figure out what works the best for you. Totally avoid shampoo plus conditioners. They may look like great money savers, but in reality, a single product cannot really does the job of two. Stop using same shampoo for every wash to avoid product build-up.

Do not apply shampoo on partially wet hair Wet your hair thoroughly before going for a shampoo. Only then, the product can work thoroughly. Or else, it would leave your hair dry. Ensure to stand under shower or run water through your head for at least 2-3 minutes prior to applying shampoo.

Do not begin with same part of your scalp Never begin shampooing with the same

part of your scalp always, as there is a danger of that spot turning dry. Remember that shampoos are meant for hair roots than hair ends. So focus more shampooing your roots and apply more conditioner to hair ends.

Do not wash hair every day Washing your hair every day could leave your hair dry out. You may shampoo at most every alternate day. Use any dry shampoo to suck out dirt from your hair. This may also give some added texture to hair.

Don’t rinse shampoo out too soon It is inadvisable to rinse shampoo out of your hair too soon. Rinsing very early means your shampoo is not getting a chance to work on hair. Instead, leave it for few minutes after lathering it. Later wash it out. It is not good to wash with hot shower. Use cold water to rinse out your hair. This would help you seal off the hair cuticle and leaves your hair soft and shiny, also preventing hair loss.

age old Indian jewellery patterns WWW.AZWISHESH.COM | MAY 2016

Indian jewellery is age old like Indian civilization. Beaded jewellery was a part of the Indus Valley civilization that existed 5000 years ago. Ajanta paintings and Bharhut, Sanchi and Amaravati sculptures reflect the range of jewellery worn by both woman and man. The sculptures show that the Jewellery is worn both by king and common man. The Indian jeweller’s art would be seen vividly in the temples of South India, Odisha, Bengal and even in Central India. Pallavas the golden period of temple architecture

122

The origin of the first Pallava King is believed to be from a liaison between the daughter of a Naga king of Manipallava named Pilli Valai (Pilivalai) with a Chola king, Killivalavan, out of which union was born a prince, who was lost in a ship wreck and found with a twig (pallava) of Cephalandra Indica (Tondai) around his ankle and hence named Tondai-man.

INDIAN HISTORY

Pallavas, the pastoral tribe emerged as a powerful ruler and commanded the region of Thondaimandalam from its capital located at Pallavapuri (Bhavatri, of Nellore in Andhra). They were of sect “Thiraiyar” and the region they ruled was called”Thondaimandalam”. When the capital was washed away by the sea due to natural disaster, they moved downwards to Kanchipuram and settled there to establish a more powerful kingdom with its territory even occupying as far as Northern Orissa, Tanjore and Trichi. 124

Kanchipuram thus became their new abode. Though classical writings talks about Pallavas, there is no particular mention of any Pallava rulers’s name. But the excavation carried out by the Indian archeological department reveals the earliest possible reign dated back to 1st and 2nd century AD. The earliest known coinage in lead is issued by the then Pallavs, which could be dated between 3rd and 4th century AD. Around 4th century AD, Pallavas defeated Ikshvakus and occupied the land as far as river Krishna. Allahabad inscription throws the light WWW.AZWISHESH.COM | MAY 2016

During the 5th century, the Pallavas expanded and crossed the river Krishna and occupied Bellary, Sorth and South Arcot, Trichirapalli, Chengalpet and part of Tanjore. At the end of

500 AD, the territory came into the possession of Simha Vishnu and he became the founder of the Pallava dynasty. He fought several wars and the empire enjoyed prosperity. the riches of kanchi and wanted to capture it. He came with a huge army and defeated Mahendravarman at Pullalur in 620 A.D. It was a great insult to the pallavas and Mahendravarman in particular. This ruined his health. His further attempts to take revenge in a series of battles with Pulikes in the northern part of Tamilnadu were all futile. All went in vain and he died a broken man in 630 A.D.

Mahendravarman’s son Narasimhavarman ascended the throne in 630 A.D, and vowed to revenge the insult done to his father by the Chalukyas. With immense strength and tact he defeated Pulikesi II in the Battle of Manimangalam and Pariyalam in the year 632 AD. He completely burnt the capital city of Pulakesi. A man with well built physique was a great wrestler too. He had a title “Mamalla to

Narasimhavarman completed the cave temples of Mahabalipuram and constructed immense number of temples. The Pallava dynasty was not that peak as under this ruler ever. But the successors managed to safeguard the territory until Cholas took their toll in the 9th century. The greatest dynasty thus saw its end once for all.

Celebrating countdown for

132

Even as challenges remain WWW.AZWISHESH.COM | MAY 2016

Brazil’s economy is in steep decline for the second straight year, shooting up the unemployment 10.2%. Olympic organizers have had to slash budgets, and this is fueling fears of embarrassing delays in the big event.

Brazil has received the ‘Olympic flame’ that will burn in Rio in August 2016. The Olympic flame was taken by Brazilian organizers at an Athens ceremony in Rio de Janeiro, featuring ancient Greek goddess costumes. As the 100-day countdown was launched to host First Olympic Games in South America, President of the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee, Carlos Nuzman said at the torch handover that, “Rio is ready to make history.”

countries have unveiled their Olympic uniforms. Thus, the world began celebrating the countdown for Rio Games!

Marking to the 100-day countdown, New Zealand athletes performed traditional Haka dance on an Auckland beach at sunrise. Buildings all across the World were lit up with special colors on the occasion. Brazilian yellow and green were lit at Tokyo’s municipal government headquarters and red-whiteblue at the Empire State Building in New York. Many

Questions lingering around here are about ‘how well is Brazil prepared to organize the event?’, given the political scenario as well as the hurt economy. It is likely that President Dilma Rousseff would be suspended from office through impeachment within weeks. Even Michel Temer, her vice-president, is likely to face an action.

Can Brazil overcome political meltdown and troubled preparations?

Meanwhile, Amnesty International is demanding an action over rising police killings, importantly in favela shanty towns in Rio. Safety concerns are prompted due to murders and violent muggings in even the heavily policed parts of Rio, which are expecting nearly 500,000 to one million tourists in August. Another worry is Terrorism. However, Brazilian officials say that a high-tech center to coordinate international security teams will look into the task. Additionally, with serious delays to the velodrome that it is due to open in July 2016. It is a crucial extension of currently limited metro system of Rio. Moreover, promises to clean up the sewage and garbage pollution have been abandoned. However, Brazil Government and global sports leaders insist that they can overcome troubled preparations as well as political meltdown!

Age never Matters

Kareena Kapoor 134

Yes, actors like Randhir Kapoor, Karishma Kapoor are in the background, but how far that helped Kareena Kapooor, for what she is today? The answer for the question is negligible.

The reason because, Kareena is established as one of the finest actresses in Bollywood within a short time with some notable characters. However, her background is just used as a ticket to enter the big screen, and it was she, who carried her career on her shoulders. After making debut with Refugee, Kareena soon picked up some quality films like ‘Asoka’, ‘Kabhi WWW.AZWISHESH.COM | MAY 2016

Chameli- A bold character in short time The perfect proof for her success as the heroine is, she was given a female oriented bold movie offer like Chameli, just within few years of the start of her career.

Record number of films in the first year Another notable achievement Kareena has is, just within one year of the start of her career, six of her films were released. She was treated as the hot cake once, signing back to back good movie offers.

No star, so what? In spite of a number of film offers, Kareena still was choosy with the script and 136 gave her nod, only if she was completely ok with the script and her character. When she was once asked about her choice of choosing the films, Kareena said, “I never mind about the costars of the film. If the script is worth, I don’t mind accepting the film, even if the film has a new star in the lead.” Not just saying, Kareena many times proved the same, doing some low budget movies with non-popular costars.

Popular as ‘Bebo’ Kareena is more popular as Bebo. Most of her co-stars, WWW.AZWISHESH.COM | MAY 2016
