Father of the Nation

Mohandas Karamchand

GANDHI

Mohandas Gandhi is considered the father of the Indian independence movement. Gandhi spent 20 years in South Africa working to fight discrimination. It was there that he created his concept of satyagraha, a non-violent way of protesting against injustices. While in India, Gandhi’s obvious virtue, simplistic lifestyle, and

minimal dress endeared him to the people. He spent his remaining years working diligently to both remove British rule from India as well as to better the lives of India’s poorest classes. Many civil rights leaders, including Martin Luther King Jr., used Gandhi’s concept of non-violent protest as a model for their own struggles.

The crowd is buzzing with anticipation. You can hear the musical notes as they dance in the air. The rhythmic sound of drums echo and the air seems full of happiness. There, from a distance, colourfully decorated floats appear in your vision. People begin to cheer and clap as the event begins … Where are we? If you guessed a revelry, you are correct! But wait, what is this? It’s quite a famous one; it takes place every year … in India! It is called Ganesh Chaturthi, a 10 days extravaganza marked with mirth, merriment and devotion. It takes place during the Hindu month of Bhadrapada and ends on Ananta Chaturdashi with the immersion of Ganesha idols. Slogans of Ganpatti Bappa Morya, Purchya Varshi Laukariya (All Hail Ganesha! Please come next year) accompany the procession of Lord Ganesha while he is being taken for Visarjan or immersion.

declared Ganesha to be above all Hindu Gods, excluding Vishnu, Lakshmi, Shiva and Parvati. Lord Ganesha is sometimes represented with only one tusk. This form of Lord Ganesha is known as Ek Dant. There are many myths about the missing tooth of Ganesha. The most common is the story about the tooth being lost as it was hurled at the moon who had offended Ganesha by mocking him.

It is considered unlucky to look at the Moon during Ganesha Chaturthi. According to Hindu mythology, once while returning from a feast, Ganesha riding atop his mouse, was accosted by a snake. On seeing the snake, the petrified mouse dropped Lord Ganesha on the ground. Because of the impact of the fall, the belly of Lord Ganesha burst open and the food he had at the feast spilled out. Ganesha gathered all the fallen ladoos and modaks and stuffed them back in his belly, using the snake to hold his belly together. During this time, Lord Ganesha himself descends Chandra (Moon) who was watching everything burst on Earth to bless his devotees. It’s believed that out laughing. Barack Obama looks forward to welcoming Narendra Modi to US

President Barack Obama looks forward to welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US next month, despite an online petition by a Sikh rights group seeking cancellation of his meeting at the White House, a top American official has said. “The President, the Secretary (of State) looks forward to welcoming Prime Minister Modi to the US. We have said that consistently since his election, and that remains the case,” State Department Deputy Spokesperson Marie Harf said. When asked about an online

petition by New York-based Sikh for Justice rights group seeking cancellation of Modi’s meeting, she said: “I believe it’s one of the ‘We, the People’ petitions. There were some fraud checks that indicated a high number of nomalous – I don’t know how to say this

word.” In its petition, the SFJ has asked President Obama to cancel his meeting with Modi in September. The group has also sought documents related to the visa ban of Modi since 2005. In 2005, the US State Department had revoked a visa that Modi had for

travelling to the US in the wake of the 2002 riots in Gujarat. Harf said a number of the signature were removed because of the terms of participation. “Users can still sign the petition, and if it garners 100,000 non-fraudulent signatures before the deadline, I think it will

receive an official response. So again, people are free to express themselves,” she said yesterday. When asked can the US prosecute somebody, a foreign prime minister or foreign country’s leader, she said, “I wouldn’t want to venture a guess at that hypothetical.” She said, “I will repeat what I just said, that we look forward to

welcoming Prime Minister Modi to the United States, as the President and the Secretary have both said.” Following his historic win in the general elections this year, President Obama called Modi personally and invited him for a meeting in September last week at the White House.

US may expand operations against ISIS

18

September, 2014

Source: Times of India

The United States will continue, and perhaps even expand, its military and intelligence operations against the Islamic State in Iraq, President Barack Obama has indicated, even as it emerged that Washington refused to consider ransom demand from jihadists to free the now-executed photojournalist James Foley, and even attempted a futile commando operation to rescue him. The immediate focus of US and British attention has now turned to the man now known as “John the Executioner,” the terrorist who ripped a knife across Foley neck and executed him for what he said the US attacks on the Islamic state and its Muslim people. Britain has acknowledged, given his accent, that he could be one of its nationals from London’s East End. Hundreds of BritishMuslims extremists are reported to have gone to Syria and Iraq to fight western forces. Foley’s suspected executioner, who has been identified simply by a first name John, is said to be one of a gang of British jihadis known as ‘The Beatles’ who are guarding western hostages for ISIS. The US and British intelligence community appear confident that he will be identified and brought to justice, the same way Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Osama bin Laden were.

various crises, said from Martha’s Vineyard. Still, the President, who aides insist is on top of the situation, sent a message that saluted Foley’s courage while trashing the aims of the Islamic State. “People like this ultimately fail,” he said. “They fail, because the future is won by those who build and not destroy and the world is shaped by people like Jim Foley, and the overwhelming majority of humanity who are appalled by those who killed him.” Other unnamed American officials meanwhile disclosed to the media that the US military and intelligence had made strenuous efforts to free Foley, short of negotiating directly with the hostage takers. A commando raid in Syria where Foley was thought to be held turned up empty after a firefight with terrorists.

Obama on his part was a little more cautious but still unrelenting about the ISIS demands as aired by John the Executioner in the video showing Foley’s killing, despite the threats he held out to also execute a second American hostage.

Foley’s professional colleagues also indicated that the terrorists had at one time demanded $100 million Euros in ransom to free Foley, and the communication was shared with the US government. Washington’s official position is that it does not negotiate with terrorists or consider ransom demands, in contrast to some European countries which pony up ransom money to free its abducted citizens. In fact, according to some accounts, Islamic extremists have made this a regular line of business, earning millions of dollars in revenue from ransom money for kidnapped westerners.

“We will be vigilant and we will be relentless. When people harm Americans, anywhere, we do what’s necessary to see that justice is done. And we act against ISIL, standing alongside others,” Obama, who is slowly attracting criticism for being on vacation in the face of

The New York Times reported recently that al Qaeda and its direct affiliates had received at least $125 million in revenue from kidnappings since 2008 — primarily from European governments. In the last year alone, they received $66 million.

“We will not forget what happened, and people will be held accountable, one way or another,” US Attorney General Eric Holder said in Washington.

Ebola crisis: Why 75 % of victims are women

About 75 per cent of people contracting Ebola are women because they are often the primary care-givers, nurses and traders, health officials have said. The disease, which has claimed the lives of at least 1,229 people across Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria, is disproportionality infecting women as the outbreak spreads across West Africa.

{

Julia Duncan-Cassell, Liberia’s minister for gender and development, said

health teams at task force meeting in Liberia found three-quarters of those who were infected or died from Ebola were female. She told the Washington Post: “Women are the caregivers — if a kid is sick, they say, ‘Go to your mom.’? “The cross-border trade women go to Guinea and Sierra Leone for the weekly markets, [and] they are also the caregivers. Most of the time when there is a death in the family, it’s the woman who prepares the funeral,

Suafiatu Tunis, a spokesperson for Community Response Group and a leader of the Social Mobilization Committee on Ebola said female family members are also typically expected to nurse and tend to sick family members, increasing their risk of contracting the disease even further. Women in West Africa are also the traditional birth attendants, nurses and the cleaners and laundry workers in hospitals. Ebola is transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids, making hospital transmission the likely method by which it would be passed on to large numbers of people.

usually an aunt or older female relative.” The Ministry of Health in Liberia also said about 75 per cent of the Ebola deaths it has counted so far have been

women, Buzz Feed reports.

Maricel Seeger, a WHO spokeswoman in Monrovia, Liberia, said reaching women and educating them on the disease is crucial to tackling the virus’ spread, as they play a major role “as conduits of information in their communities”. “By reaching the women, they are reaching those who can best protect their families, and their own health,” she said. Liberia has the highest death toll and its number of cases is rising the fastest. In response, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has ordered West Point sealed off and imposed a night-time curfew.

In spite of quake show goes on to aid ailing musician

At 3.30 am on Sunday (August 24) The Empress Theater in Vallejo rocked with the rest of the North Bay. A little more than 12 hours later it rock and rolled. The Hugz For Hermz benefit concert went on as scheduled Sunday evening amid widespread damage in downtown Vallejo. Dozens of musicians, many of whose own homes were damaged by the quake, felt the cause was too important not to play. Hugz For Hermz was organized to benefit longtime Bay Area musician, Herman Wilson. Herman, 54, has been a fixture in the North Bay blues, jazz and soul music scenes for decades. He has played saxophone in dozen’s of bands and with countless other musicians. All this, in spite of being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis 26 years ago. Recently, though, as the damage to his nervous system has become more pronounced, Herman has trouble with some of life’s simplest activities such as walking. But playing the sax? That, Herman can still do. “To still do what I do with what I am going through? That makes it even sweeter,” Herman says. And, it should be noted, it is something Herman still 22

wants to do be able to do for many years if he can forestall the advancement of his disease. Herman has his heart set on an experimental treatment for ms (uncovered by insurance) that would cost $15,000. It is a testament to the many years of good will Herman has built up among his music friends that when they found out what he needed they decided to put on a show to help him out. Long-time Bay Area music promoter, Jeff Trager, took the lead in getting the acts together. Jeff says he has dealt with literally thousands of musicians in his four decades in the industry, but few with a heart as big as Herman’s. When Jeff’s mother recently passed away, Herman played at her memorial service. He refused payment. “That’s Herman,” says Jeff, “it’s all about giving back.

PM Modi keep MPs on a tight leash to prevent Congress-like SCAMS

M

PM Modi declared his crusade against corruption August 12 when he publicly reiterated at the Kargil rally saying: ‘na khaoonga, na khane doonga (won’t take bribe, won’t let others take)’. Modi’s men including ministers, Mps, bureaucrats and government servants have got the message that the PM has zero tolerance on corruption. Here are some latest diktats and moves of prime minister Narendra Modi: Installing CCTVs in ministries

Prime Minister Narendra Modi seems to be walking the whole hog to curb corruption in the country. From installing CCTVs to closely monitoring the individual ministers, PM Modi is ensuring that Congress-like Scams do not plague the NDA government.

24

September, 2014

For the first time closed circuit televisions (CCTVs) are being installed in major central ministries of the Modi government. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, a cash-rich ministry, is the first to be installed with CCTVs as major deals, orders and contracts valued at billions take place here. The proposal to install CCTVs in the petroleum ministry has been cleared and soon there will be video recording of meetings and events. More ministries will be installed with CCTVs in future. Next in line could be the Defence ministry, another hub of big deals. Cabinet notes made under PMO’s directions

PM Modi seems to be moving towards micromanagement of the ministries. The Modi government has made another unprecedented decision regarding cabinet notes made by individual ministries regarding their future plans and functioning. Under the new rule the union ministries will have to consult the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and wait for its instructions before drafting cabinet notes. In future, the ministries will be micro-managed by the PMO it seems.

DAVP’s advertisements to newspapers under scanner Newspapers which have been receiving advertisements from the Information and Broadcasting ministry’s Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP) has come under the scrutiny of PMO. The PMO has asked the DAVP to submit all information and data regarding advertisements given in the last ten years to media houses. PMO wants to track how much government money was given to which media house in the past 10 years (during UPA tenure). The government wants to regulate investment of government money into media houses through advertisements that had helped to keep them afloat. Several mainline newspapers may be hit by this move of the government as they have survived mainly on government doles by way of advertisements. Ministers under Modi’s constantly scrutiny PM Modi keeps a constant watch over the Union ministers. Some of them received a rude jolts when the PM himself reminded them that he is watching them. At one instance, a Union minister was having a lunch/dinner at a five star hotel in New Delhi with a top business tycoon, who is close to PM Modi. In between his meal, the PM calls the minister inquiring if the meal was over. The call was brief, but the message was conveyed to the minister. He quickly wrapped the meeting and returned to his office. In another case, a minister was headed towards the Indira Gandhi International airport for his maiden foreign trip some months back. He was dressed in jeans. The minister had hardly gone a kilometer and a half when the PM calls him on his mobile. The PM asked him casually as to where he was going. The minister reminded him of his foreign trip that was cleared by the government. He was confounded when Modi chided him for his choice of clothes (jeans). The PM told him that he was a public servant and will be under public scrutiny in India as well as abroad and could be criticized. So the minister went back to his residence, changed into the kurta-pyjama and went for his foreign trip. PM Narendra Modi is a strict task master. Not only he wants his ministers and top bureaucrats to do the job, but he also expects them to be upright in public life. The fear of being caught by Modi is so great that the ministers and Babus have started borrowing phones of their drivers and aides as an idle conversations is not ‘safe’ on their personal phones.

What makes Mumbai's dabbawalas successful In last year’s critically acclaimed movie The Lunchbox, there is a scene where the leading lady accuses her dabbawala of delivering the wrong dabba. “But with judicious adjustments to their four pillars, they, may continue to achieve amazing results. That’s a lesson mangers of all enterprises should take to heart.”

The script could possibly have had the man respond by pointing out that the quality of Mumbai’s 125 year old lunch delivery service has been studied by the likes of FedEx and Virgin Atlantic. Or the fact that that Prince Charles is a big admirer and invited them to his wedding. 30

September, 2014

Instead, writer-director Ritesh Batra has him quoting a Harvard Business School case study that says the dabbawala’s error rate is one in six million deliveries. For Stefan Thomke, the author of the case, the affirmation of his work in popular culture was rather gratifying.

Mumbai’s dabbawalas have been the subject of numerous TV documentaries, articles and books, but his was the very first academic study of the system. “It was a great movie and I was mentioned as this ‘Harvard guy’. The Wall Street Journal called it a ‘weird connection’ and interviewed me about it,”

he says. Written in 2010 and revised in 2013, The Dabbawala System: OnTime Delivery, Every Time is a 23-page case that studies the Mumbai’s lunch box delivery operation in detail and poses questions on how it might innovate with changing times. The 5,000 dabbawalas of Mumbai are organised into a flat structure of 200 self-managed teams of 25 individuals each, who vary in age from 18 to 65, with the most experienced ones acting as supervisors in addition to doing their own deliveries. Each dabbawala is an entrepreneur in his own right, responsible for negotiating prices with his own customers.

The fourth and most important pillar of the dabbawala system is its old fashioned culture of community — something most new-age corporates don’t focus enough on. The men, and few women, who make up the dabbawala network trace their lineage to a clutch of villages around Pune and they share the same language, values, work ethic and religious beliefs.

They are highly motivated because they believe that delivering food to officegoers is like a service to God, not unlike delivering medicine to the sick. “This makes them very dedicated,” says Thomke. “It’s much more powerful mission statement than something like ‘always delight the customer’ or The operation is linked ‘spread excellence’.” The closely to the Mumbai wide-spread publicity railway system, which the dabbawalas have sets the pace and received over the provides a scheduling past decade has mechanism. “Most service resulted in several businesses don’t have a external agencies built-in mechanism like stepping in to the railways, but they experiment with their can certainly adopt a operation. system that confers similar benefits. distributing samples and flyers through the network but the dabbawalas found this to be so disruptive that it was abandoned after a trial run. Some business school students suggested they replace their bicycles with motorcycles but this too was debated and rejected as being unworkable. Then there was the idea of backward integration into catering, which was also rejected as being too far from the core competence of timely delivery. Thomke uses the dabbawala case it in Executive Development Programs in conjunction with a case on the Toyota Production System and says, “When you compare the two, one of the takeaways is that both systems are extremely fine tuned. You can’t change the smallest thing without affecting the whole system.”

Opportunities for Legal Immigration The first step in legally immigrating to the United States is to obtain an immigrant visa. Most immigrants obtain visas through the sponsorship of close family members or employers. Others qualify for visas as asylees or refugees, fleeing persecution in their home countries. Of all others wishing to come, only the luckiest few will have a chance to do so legally; those coming from countries like Mexico will have virtually no opportunity whatsoever. Below are the four most common ways of obtaining an immigrant visa:

NRI Discussions

1

Family-based

A U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident (a “green card holder) sponsors a family member for immigration. Waiting periods for obtaining such visas vary depending on the clos eness of the family relationship, and can be lengthy, because a limited number of visas are available each year.

* Some countries of origin, including Mexico, China, and the Philippines, have more restrictive visa availabilities.

Employment Based

Employers sponsor a potential employee for immigration; in select cases extraordinarilyqualified immigrants may immigrate without an employer-sponsor. Employer sponsors must demonstrate that there are an insufficien t number of qualified workers available in the United States to meet their need. The wait can last 7 to 8 years because of the limited number of visas.

3

Asylum and Refugee Status

These protections are available to people who are unable or unwilling to return to their home countries because of persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion. In general, asylee status is granted in the United States and refugee status is granted outside of it.

Diversity Lottery

For those who don’t have a family member or employer to sponsor them, the Diversity Lottery may be an option. Only 50,000 winners are granted visas annually in this process. Not everyone is eligible to enter the lottery: The program aims to increase immigration from underr epresented countries, so each year the State Department issues a list of those countries whose citizens may not apply. For 2008, immigrants from the following countries are excluded from the visa lottery: Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Pakistan, the Philippines, Peru, Poland, Russia, South Korea, the United Kingdom and Vietnam. 34

Completing the Immigration Process An immigrant must have a legal immigrant visa to be eligible for legal permanent residency and U.S. citizenship, but the visa is not enough. To acquire a “green card,” an immigrant must first apply to adjust his status to legal permanent resident. The Department of Homeland Security then verifies that there are no medical, financial, criminal or prior immigration violation grounds to deny the application, which costs $1,010. Most people need an attorney to help them navigate the complex process, incurring additional costs of seve ral thousand dollars. Most legal permanent residents are allowed to apply for citizenship after five years. To gain citizenship, they must demonstrate good moral character and a basic knowledge of English, U.S. history

and government. The citizenship application costs $675. It is important to note that immigration law is a type of administrative – not criminal – law. Immigration legal procedures like deportations do not proceed through the U.S. judicial system. They take place within the U.S. Department of Justice. Because deportation is considered an administrative correction and not a criminal punishment, undocumented immigrants facing deportation do not have the right to legal counsel provided by the government. As most cannot afford legal representation, they face the system alone.

shook Ramsaran is a well-known name among the Indian diaspora. He was honoured last year at the Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas ( PBD) for his remarkable work towards the benefit of the Indian community in the US. Guyanese-born Ashook is also the President and CEO of Ramex Inc, an electronics manufacturing enterprise in College Point, New York. His company remained listed among the Top 100 Indian Owned Businesses in the USA for 10 consecutive years. An ardent advocate of universal human rights, he was given special recognition by St. John’s University and a scholarship has also been set up in his name for Caribbean and Latin America studies. Ramsaran has worked hard and long to bring about recognition by the Government of India for those who left

India from 1834 – 1920 as indentured laborers. He spearheaded the Kolkota Memorial project which was inaugurated soon after the Pravasi convention ended. He was also honoured a an “Outstanding Immigrant” by New York City Council. He was previously GOPIO’s Executive Vice President and Secretary General. He was unanimously elected President of GOPIO International on Nove 19,2011 at GOPIO’s Convention 2011. He has written extensively on issues of interest concerning PIO’s in the global Indian diaspora.

In a free-wheeling chat with Chandran Iyer on the sidelines of GOPIO meet in Jaipur, its President Ashook Ramsaran says PBD should focus more on global issues.

There are nearly six million NRIs and PIOs all over the world. How sensitive do you think is the Indian government to their problems? That is a very loaded question that you have asked. The issue is very big and there are many problems. I can say the government has become more sensitive because of the Diaspora’s effect on India and its economy. How effective are the events like Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in sensitizing the government and creating awareness about the problems of the daispora? It is a good start. It started in 2003 and started taking up the issues of NRIs and PIOs. But slowly it is going off the track . It has diverged and become more and more Indo-centric. This needs to be shifted and brought back and align it to the issue of diaspora. What do you mean by Indo-centric. When issues are discussed in PBD, isn’t the diaspora mainly interested in Indo-Centric issues?

interest outside of India ,that sometimes are not related to India such as Human Rights issue, social issues, political issues, regional issue and racial issues. They may not be related to what is happening in India and hence such issues should be given more prominence in the events like the PBD. There was a news that GOPIO has decided to collaborate with the Overseas Felicitation Centre. Could you elaborate what exactly is GOPIO planning to achieve through this collaboration? Collaboration is very simple. OIFC facilitates business enterprises . It has been providing investment know-how and business facilitation services to the NRIs. But it is a two way street and not one way. They facilitate business investment in India and we are using them to make the Indians aware of what business opportunities lies overseas.

No. When I say Indo -centric I mean most of the issues are India – based. The diaspora has September, 2014

Bringing out art from the closed and plush confines of art galleries to the public places is what street art tend to do, to offer a “continuous cultural feast” to the public.

Events Art Exbition Street art is an umbrella term defining forms of visual art created in public locations, usually unsanctioned artwork executed outside of the context of traditional art venues. The term gained popularity during the graffiti art boom of the early 1980s and continues to be applied to subsequent incarnations. Stencil graffiti, wheatpasted poster art or sticker art, and street installation or sculpture are common forms of modern street art. V\.

organizers were able to bring the artists and help get walls for them- an effort which took about a year and a half of serious planning to bring to fruition.

Artists who choose the streets as their gallery are often doing so from a preference to communicate directly with the public at large, free from perceived confines of the formal art world.

“Pondering was what we had to do for much of the day as the locals were still getting accustomed to strange folks painting their walls and generally made life a bit difficult for the artists and the crew,” writes Siddhant Mehta on the blog of the festival’s site when describing the cautious reaction of folks when seeing painters and scaffolding.

As street art continues to go global here in the twenty-teens, today we bring you images showing that Dehli has become one of the latest cities to showcase it. In what is billed as India’s very first street art festival the south Delhi neighborhood of Shahpur Jat hosted a collection of international and local artists this spring to paint murals while a public who is not quite acquainted with public art asked many questions.

In an underdeveloped area undergoing the same gentrification found in edgy parts of large cities around the globe, the artists found that the long term residents sometimes resisted the change but eventually embraced it, if tentatively at times.

Some residents even requested images of religious iconography before any artworks were created, while some artists entertained requests for cartoon characters or children’s games to be incorporated in their murals.

Of the 60 artists who participated, many were from India, which may have contributed to a sense of Working out of the newly rustic indoor venue cultural balance in the mural collection created in the “Social Space” in the trendy neighborhood of Hauz neighborhood. As the global street art scene continues to open its arms wider it is promising to see that a new public art festival like this has begun in such a grand way in a brand new location. It is also heartening to see planners who take into account the preferences of the neighbors, and who act with a sense of goodwill when offering public art for arts sake.

India’s streetside coffee culture!

India is most often associated with tea, but java culture runs deep in the country’s southern states. Coffee was introduced to what is now Tamil Nadu’s neighboring state of Karnataka in the 17th century by an Indian Muslim saint named Baba Budan, who smuggled seven beans from Yemen while on pilgrimage to Mecca. Cultivation flourished under the British, and India now produces some 300,000 tons of coffee per year. Tamil Nadu is the country’s third largest grower after Karnataka and Kerala.

Hot Chips. But the majority of the state’s java is served and drunk at coffee bars, a term that describes a range of street establishments from standalone shacks just wide enough to accommodate a vendor and carts parked under a corrugated roof to huts carved out of the ground floor of permanent structures. At a coffee bar, your hot drink (many serve tea as well) is ordered, prepared, served and paid for at a window fronted by a small counter. It’s at the counter that you drink while standing on the pavement, perhaps as you “No true blue South Indian nibble a piping-hot crispy daal would ever do without his or fritter or a tea biscuit plucked from her filter coffee early morning ,” a metal-topped glass canister. says Chennai food writer Sadita Takeaway is always an option, Radhakrishna. blended with chicory. Sugar is a given (ask for konjam jeeni for a less sweet brew), and so is India’s wickedly rich full-cream milk, kept hot on a burner near the counter. To prepare an order the vendor places sugar in a wide-lipped metal tumbler, adds a shot of coffee and a ladle of milk, and then simultaneously blends, cools and froths the liquid by pouring it back and forth between two tumblers, often from great heights (thus its nickname “meter coffee”). Utter the words konjam kuda and he’ll add a flourish of black coffee to the surface of the drink. Depending on the type of bean used, southern Indian coffee can be smoky, winey or even a bit cinnamony, and the chicory adds a hint of nuttiness. In over a week of steady sampling around Tamil Nadu, I drank my best (and strongest) glass at Gopi Iyengar, though I’d rate all of the others nothing less than wonderful. Served in small doses for as little as 8 Indian rupees (about $0.13) a glass, southern India’s coffee-bar coffee goes down like ice cream — leaving room, pocket change and a hankering for just one more.

Savor the taste of India on streets!

American chef Anthony Bourdain had once said, “Street food makes travelling interesting, it’s the salvation of human race!” We cannot agree more. There is an Anthony Bourdain in each of us, an avid street food advocate. In India, best foods are not those that are served within the four walls of an air-conditioned restaurants, but on the streets where famished people grab a plate on the go. It’s function, it’s filling and sold and eaten at a frenzied pace. Possibly that is why it’s infamously dubbed as fast-food. It doesn’t take a connoisseur to know where some of the nest food in India comes from — the streets! Today we hop you down the food gullies of India to bring ten of it’s much-loved street food and list the best places in India to grab a bite. Read on.

Banta in Hrishikesh

Chuski in Delhi Lafing in Dharamsala

There’s nothing like banta to beat the fierce north Indian summer. For the uninitiated, banta is an indigenous lemon soda sold all over north India in unique Codd-neck bottles with marbles in their necks to keep the fizz from escaping. The soda is served with loads of ice and a special masala, and is priced between Rs 5 and Rs 20.

Louis Vuitton-ed ladies and street children alike find the lure of chuski—Delhi’s version of the ice-lolly—absolutely irresistible. When the mercury rises to the mid-40s, this crushed ice treat, drizzled with khatta meetha, cola, orange, rose or any other syrups the heart might desire, becomes a real favourite with Dilliwallahs.Even five-star hotels like Claridge’s serve chuskis, in exotic flavours and even spiked with Vodka.

Lafing is a spicy noodle dish that is a huge favourite with refugees in Dharamsala, although you’re likely to find this dish in Tibetan centres in other parts of north India as well.

Pani puri on Juhu Beach, Mumbai

Ghevar in Jodhpur Sandwiches in Mumbai

A sandwich doesn’t seem like a very novel idea. But when Right Place, a snack joint in Mumbai’s Breach Candy, simply layered potatoes, tomatoes, capsicums and onions between bread with a generous amount of chutney, and offered it grilled or plain, customers loved it like it was the best thing since sliced bread. This very filling snack costs Rs 60 only. To try something more adventurous, head to the stall near National College on Linking Road. Two slices of hot, buttery bread are packed close with grated cheese and a home-made jam of bananas, papaya and the fruit of the day, and then grilled till the cheese and jam blend together.

Pani puri on Juhu Beach, Mumbai Come weekend, and Juhu beach spills over with families and lovers enjoying the weather and waves. And no outing is complete without a spicy mouthful of pani puri while watching the sunset. Delicate puris are filled with potato, sprouts or boondi, topped with a dash of tangy tamarind sauce and generous amounts of spicy chillicoriander pani. Bliss comes cheap at Rs 20 to Rs 30 a plate (six to eight puris).

Thandai in Varanasi

Varanasi is justifiably famous for its thandai, that sugary

Deliciously crunchy and sweet, malai ghevar, paneer ghevar and misri mewa or rabdi ke ghevar are Jodhpur specialties popular throughout Rajasthan, especially during special occasions. Head to Jodhpur Sweets at C Road for the best there is, although most sweet shops will prepare fresh ghevar if you order it in advance. Ghevar is topped with thinly sliced almonds and pistachios and a sprinkling of cardamom powder.

cooling drink, infused with watermelon and muskmelon seeds, almonds, cardamom, saunf, rose petals, saffron, and if you want it, bhang! Thandai is also mixed with sookhaa mewa—crushed nuts such as cashewnuts, pistachios and almonds. Try the thandai at Mishrambu in the heritage city.

Chhole bhature in Amritsar

Chowmein in Kolkata Assamese bread in Goapalara

You can’t go to Amritsar and not try the chhole bhature. Spiked with dark, fiery masalas, the chhole here is irresistable. Anant Ram on Lawrence Road is a great place to sample this Punjabi delicacy.

Woodlands’s dosas in Chennai

Soft, fluffy uthappams, crisp, golden dosas, and the scent of coconut chutney in the air—

Add some yummy to your ferry ride from Goaplara in Assam to Dimapur in Nagaland by munching on the local fresh bread. Grab some of it early in the day when it’s freshly baked and served wrapped in old newspapers.

Woodlands Hotel’s dosa stall outside Narada Gana Sabha on TTK Road promises all this and more! Try the masala dosa, an all-time favourite. The ghee roast is filling and great value for money, priced between Rs 25 and and Rs 50. Idlis, vadas and other fresh snacks are just as popular. Open only in the evenings from about 5 pm, this is one of Chennai’s landmarks.

In Kolkata, chowmein vies for the top spot with maach bhaat, and wins more votes, at least with younger foodies. You can have it any time of the day, it is inexpensive, hygienic, and you have options (chicken, egg, etc)—just some of the reasons it has emerged as Kolkata’s favourite food. Originally brought to Kolkata by the Chinese community, which started restaurants in Bow Bazaar and Tangra, chowmein street stalls later came up everywhere in the city. Now, every square kilometre of the city comes equipped with at least 15 chowmein stalls.

Vada pav in Mumbai

This is the Mumbaikar’s great weakness. Potato filling deep-fried in batter till crisp, and sprinkled with chutney, dark with garlic and masalas. There are many vada pao chains like Jumbo King all over Mumbai, but the taste that truly stays with you is sold in the ramshackle stalls on the road, especially outside local train stations. Madhubani painting originated in a small village, known as Maithili, of the Bihar state of India. Initially, the womenfolk of the village drew the paintings on the walls of their home, as an illustration of their thoughts, hopes and dreams.

W

ith time, the paintings started becoming a part of festivities and special events, like marriage. Slowly and gradually, the Madhubani painting of India crossed the traditional boundaries and started reaching connoisseurs of art, both at the national as well as the international level.

he traditional base of freshly plastered mud wall of huts has now been replaced by cloth, handmade paper and canvas. Since the paintings have been confined to a limited geographical range, the themes as well as the style are, more or less, the same. Indian Maithili paintings make use of three-dimensional images and the colors that are used are derived mainly from plants. The themes on which these paintings are based include nature and mythological events. The first reference to the Maithili painting of Bihar dates back to the time of Ramayana, when King Janaka ordered the paintings to be created for his daughter, Sita’s, wedding.

Themes of Maithili Paintings Themes of the Maithili painting of Bihar revolve around Hindu deities like Krishna, Rama, Lakshmi, Shiva, Durga and Saraswati. The natural themes that are used include the Sun, the Moon and the religious plants like tulsi. One can also find paintings based on scenes from the royal courts and social events, like weddings. If any empty space is left after painting the main theme, it is filled up with the motifs of flowers, animals and birds or geometric designs. Making Madhubani Paintings The brush used for Madhubani paintings of Bihar was made of cotton, wrapped around a bamboo stick. The artists prepare the colors that are used for the paintings. Black color is made by adding soot to cow dung; yellow from combining turmeric (or pollen or lime) with the milk of banyan leaves; blue from indigo; red from the kusam flower juice or red sandalwood; green from the leaves of the wood apple tree; white from rice powder and orange from palasha flowers. There is no shading in the application of colors. A double line is drawn for outlines and the gap is filled with either cross or straight tiny lines. The linear Maithili paintings do not even require application of colors; only the outlines are drawn.

Linguswamy has always been associated with some meaningful films in the past. He is now back with a suspense thriller in Sikandar. The movie is BANG BANG hit the screens.

How was it working with Surya? Yes, it was great experience working with him as he is a very dedicated actor. In my film, Sikandar, he plays a gangster from the Mumbai underworld and we have styled him in a very stylish avatar. This is the first time he will be playing a double role in which both the characters are stylish. We have revealed only the first look of the film so far and the buzz is quite good. It is a completely commercial film packaged with a little suspense, drama, action and romance. On the whole, it’s a massy film, a holiday release, which will hit the screens on August 15. There are quite a few Bollywood actors in the film too… Yes, there’s Manoj Bajpai, Vidyut Jammwal, Rajpal Yadav, Dalip Tahil and some others. The film is set in Mumbai, so I felt that we needed some actors from here as well. Besides, I have been a big fan of Manoj Bajpai from a very long time. I admired him in films like Satya and I often refer to him as the Robert De Niro of Indian cinema. But this is not the first time I am

working with Hindi film actors. I have worked with Milind Soman for one of my films and Atul Kulkarni, who featured in my film, Run, which was later remade in Hindi. Since you mentioned Run, what is your take on South films being remade in Hindi? A lot of people talk about how we need to come up with new content and not indulge in remakes but the truth is, remakes have been around for quite a few years. A lot of big producers are buying the rights to our films to remake them in Hindi. So that’s definitely a positive sign. This is only possible because these stories have mass appeal, like Ghajini, Pokiri and Singham. The fact that actors like Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn feature in these remakes is why they are all run successful. Almost all remakes in the last 5 to 10 years have made Rs 100 – 200 crore at the box office. So it’s good news. The Hindi film industry has always churned out commercial entertainers which have an emotional chord. Films like Sholay and Deewar are in that category. Our Tamil directors like Puri Jagganadh, AR Murgadoss and Prabhu Dheva have all directed remakes in Hindi.

Surya unleashes the best in both the roles as Raju Bhai and Krishna. He becomes the absolute showstopper and keeps stealing your attention in every frame. Be his most vivacious cuteness as a lover boy, his cool mannerisms, chemistry with Samantha or the mind-boggling aggressions on his loss, he strikes with a spectacular show. There is one scene where he will outburst for his friend it is very hot touching. Samantha woos you down with her ultra-glam looks and scorches the screens indeed, especially in the song ‘Ek Do Teen’. Her cute gestures and bubbly nature are impressive. Vidyut Jamwal is one more asset for the film. He did a very emotional role which he has never tried before and the emotional and action scenes in his presence are top notch. Songs and the back ground music are just OK. Photography by Santhosh Sivan has been decent. Production values are good. Direction by Linguswamy has been decent.

-Adah Sharma

77

Special Story How did you get involved with acting? Was it something that you always wanted to do? My passion for films started during my childhood. I used to watch lot of films since then. My family, especially my mom has given me full support.

Adah Sharma has become Tollywood’s new heroine with her starring role in Puri Jagannadh’s latest movie ‘Heart Attack’.

How did you get to play the role in this film? Did you have to audition? I met Puri Jagannadh a year ago. He said that he watched my film 1920. And he also promised to give opportunity in his film. As promised he called me for the audition of this film and selected me. Were there many other girls auditioning for the role? Later I learnt through Nithin that 100 girls were auditioned before Puri garu selected me. What was it like sharing the screen space with Nithin? Nithin is a good co-star. I watched his films ‘Jayam’, ‘Ishq’ and ‘Gunde Jaari Gallantayyinde’. I liked his performance. He appears in a stylish look in this film. He has supported me a lot. Let’s talk about your character now? I played Hayathi, a Telugu girl that lives in Goa. A very innocent and serious character. She goes to Spain to meet Brahmanandam with regard to her friend’s marriage. Puri designed my character beautifully. I’m sure everyone will like it.

78

September, 2014

Did you enjoy reprising your role in this film? Oh Yeah! I had a great experience working for this film. My previous film ‘1920’ was a horror film. ‘Heart Attack’ is quite contrast to it. It’s a romantic love story with action and comedy elements. From your experience, how would you describe Puri Jagannadh? Puri Jagannadh is very cool and energetic on the sets. His films have good craze. Those who watch his films are aware of it. He is not only a good director, but a good producer too. He ensures that everything is perfect during shootings. I’m thankful to him for believing me and giving opportunity to be part of this film. You have worked in Bollywood and Tollywood? How different are the two? Not really much! In Bollywood they speak Hindi and in Tollywood they speak Telugu. (Smiles) In my observation here, I found not a single lady assistant on the sets. Have you watched Puri Jagannadh’s films before signing this film? Yeah! I’ve watched almost all his movies. I personally liked the film ‘Amma Nanna O Tamil Ammayi’. September, 2014

Special Story

I’ve few projects in Bollywood. And I signed a film for a leading banner in Telugu. I can’t reveal anything more than this right now.

Nithin is a good dancer. How about you? Yes! Nithin is a wonderful dancer. He really danced well in the song ‘Muddadigane’. I’m a good dancer too. However my character in this film will not dance. As I told you before, it’s a serious role. Best song you liked in this film? All songs are good. I personally like ‘Selavanuko......’. Anoop Rubens rendered wonderful music. Tell us about the comedy in this film.

I’ve few projects in Bollywood. And I signed a film for a leading banner in Telugu. I can’t reveal anything more than this right now. -Adah Sharma

There is a comedy track between Brahmanandam garu and Aali garu. I too have good comedy scenes with Brahmanandam garu. I’m sure everyone will enjoy it. How are feeling about the release of your debut film? This is my first film in Tollywood. Hence feeling nervous and tensed about the audience’s reaction.

Are you emotionally abusing your Child?

Children

are like soft clay, very, very impressionable.

Y

et, time and again, parents do things that create negative impressions on the tender minds of the kids. By doing certain things, saying certain things, withholding love and many other subtle and not so subtle gestures, you might be emotionally abusing our children. Next time you are about to lose your cool on your child, think of this article and refrain from a negative gesture.

90

September, 2014

K

Are you emotionally abusing your Child? The increasing number of juvenile crime and other ill-activities by teenagers and youth raise a finger towards parenting. Knowingly or unknowingly, sometimes parents or care-takers tend to abuse infants and toddlers emotionally.

Have you ever got irritated with your little one and just shrugged them off? If yes, unknowingly you have just sent a few negative vibes to the little one that they are not worthwhile to spend time with. When you, as a parent are trying hard to focus on some important task, the slightest disturbance from your little ones can frustrate you. But you need to understand that parenting doesn’t come easy, one needs to be patient and give full attention to their little ones. September, 2014

Kids Special

So what is this Emotional abuse? Emotional abuse in children can take many forms like child neglect, child rejection, extreme punishment, verbal abuse and so on. Even if your child cannot speak, but he/she is old enough to sense your feeling, mood and tone. Here is the quick guide on what kind of Emotional Abuses on your child are possible and how to avoid them.

Child neglect/Rejection Child neglect or rejection can be done either knowingly or unknowingly. When you are trying to send an important e-mail to your boss and you are being poked, tickled or interrupted by your little one, the easiest option for any parent is to ignore him/her and continue sending your e-mail. You can very politely respond to him/her in a very receptive manner. Like, ‘Yes dear what are you doing?, ‘Give two minutes we’ll go out to play soon”. If these kind of responses don’t help and she is still persistent, then just shut your work for 2-3 mins.

92

September, 2014

Meanwhile engage her to something new and interesting activities. Something like ‘ a box full of colorful strings (of palm size), put her on a dining mat with a bowl of colorful veggies like cheese cubes, potatoes, tomatoes, peas, carrots’. These activities can keep them occupied for hours. Yes they will create some mess, but that’s fine till you finish your work. If these activities doesn’t work, just take 2-3 mins to find an appropriate individual – a family member or friends who can spend some time with him/her till you finish your work.

Comparison and competition In this competitive world, every parent tries to push their child to be the best and ‘Perfect’ to the ‘T’. Expecting high results and pressuring to perform best in every field may lead them to depression. This kind of emotional abuse is often done by parents, relatives, teachers and also peers. Comparing a child Extreme Discipline with their siblings and friends for their academic Giving extreme punishment in the name of discipline performance is the biggest mistake any parent can to these little ones can put an emotional black spot make for their educational development. Unusual places to stay in the USA

Have your pizza delivered underwater

Get cozy in the Great Outdoors America’s only “Human Nest” for rent is at Treebones Resort (treebonesresort.com), a glamping hot spot in Big Sur, California. Built for two by eco-artist Jason Flynn, the Nest overlooks the Pacific and gets booked up several months in advance. Call the design “twigecture”, and if you don’t mind sacrificing some privacy, the nest offers a one-of-akind view as you sleep in a tree under the stars (it doesn’t rain much in Big Sur). “Although the nest is completely open to the elements, with no amenities besides an outdoor mattress, and a spectacular ocean view, it is our most popular accommodation,” says manager Megan Handy, the daughter of owners John and Corinne Handy. “It is a very unique experience. We have ‘nesters’ who come back year after year.” Treebones also provides swish yurts, but if you prefer a more rustic experience, visit Falls Brook Yurts (fallsbrookyurts.com) in Minerva, New York, hidden in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains, which are part of the Appalachian Trail stretching all the way to Georgia. Yurting is great for lovers of the outdoors on a budget who don’t want to invest in or haul all that camping gear. Inside the fully furnished yurt you’ll find a working kitchenette, tables, chairs, a sofa and bunk beds for six. The outhouse latrine is just 15 steps from the front door. There’s no running water at the yurt; you can either carry bottled water on the 20-minute hike from the road where you parked, or use the buckets provided at the yurt to bring water up from the nearby brook, though be sure to boil the water first before bathing or drinking it.

What started out as an underwater research station eventually inspired one of the world’s few operating underwater hotels. Dive down 21 feet below the surface and stay in one of three 20foot underwater chambers where you can sleep, eat, and watch whatever swims by your window. Diving experience is a plus, although beginners can take a brief introductory course provided by the lodge before enjoying their accommodations. Forget bellhops! Your luggage is brought to you in a watertight container. If you’re feeling peckish in your capsule, order a pizza - also protected by a container from meeting a watery end. Founder and owner Ian Koblick, who is president of the Marine Resources Development Foundation, says the neighbours are often as curious about the guests as the other way around. “What can the fish see, that’s what I say?” Koblick jokes. “There are manatees in the lagoon, and fish coming and going. It’s a unique experience and the closest you’ll ever come to living in another world other than going into outer space.”

Dog Bark Park Inn

Dog Bark Park Inn (dogbarkparkinn.com) on Highway 95 in Cottonwood, Idaho, is the creation of chainsaw artist Dennis Sullivan and his wife Frances Conklin. Together, they built America’s biggest beagle, known fondly as “Sweet Willy”, a two-bedroom bed and breakfast open between April and October. Sleeping in the dog house is a great way to unplug: Sweet Willy has no phone or television. But you get to enjoy a tasty breakfast that includes eggs, bagels, pastries, yogurt, cheese, and the family’s secret granola recipe. For souvenirs, check out the gift shop where you can buy portable versions of Sweet Willy and friends.

Love animals? So do your hosts About 115 miles north of the Big Apple is the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary (woodstocksanctuary.org) near legendary Woodstock, where the hippie movement came of age in 1969. Opened in 2012, the sanctuary’s new guesthouse, a renovated 19th-century farmhouse, has four bedrooms, a common kitchen and living area, and 23 acres of rescued goats, chickens, cows, pigs, turkeys, sheep and a donkey named Diane. Volunteer on the farm by shovelling poop or cleaning coops and receive a discount on your stay (we are repeat visitors and volunteers!). Says co-founder and director Jenny Brown: “People love being able to see all the activity at the sanctuary from the windows and front porch. It truly creates a feeling of tranquility to be able to watch the rescued animals and at the same time

enjoy a healthy, vegan, organic breakfast.” Revenue from the guesthouse goes directly to care for over 300 animals.

Special Story Chiranjeevi is all set to make a comeback after a hiatus of 7 years. His 150th film going to be a complete entertainer. Here is idlebrain.com’s exclusive interview with Chiranjeevi on the occasion of his birthday on 22 August 2014 -

98

September, 2014

Ram Charan taking special interest in Chiranjeevi’s 150th film Tell us about your 150th film? I want to give what people want. Audiences and fans want a complete entertainer for me. This film will have a lot of comedy and masala. I don’t want to make a historical film like Uyyalavada Narasimha Reddy or message oriented film just because it’s my 150th film. I am listening to stories. Once we finalise the right story, we will decide about the director. Ram Charan will produce this movie. You had been away from films for 7 years? Yes. I am away from acting for the past 7 years. But I am in touch with film industry. Thanks to Ram Charan. I have been listening his scripts. Whenever I listen to a script, I put myself in hero’s shoes and imagine if it works at box office. You have 3 family members (Pawan Kalyan, Allu Arjun and Ram Charan) ruling the film industry now. How do you feel about it? Telugu film industry is my domain. I have no regrets for stopping acting and entering film industry. Ram Charan has carried my legacy and filled up my space. Some people speculated that mega era is over when I lost it in 2009 elections. But the success of Magadheera proved that politics and movies are two different and mutually exclusive fields. The phenomenal success of three actors from my family proves the kind of following we have. What’s the reason for choosing entertainment oriented film for 150th film? I love doing comedy and I was the one hero who introduced full length comedy orientation for a big hero in proper commercial films like Donga Mogudu. Annayya is a fine example of comedy masala film. I have also made sure that there is entertainment

Special Story

in serious subjects like Choodalani Vundi, Indra and Tagore.

Guna Sekhar wanted it to be a serious film and felt that having entertainment would dilute the intensity in Choodalani Vundi. I have convinced him and made sure that there is a lot of comedy in the love thread between me and Soundarya. In Indra film too, there is excellent comedy in Kaasi episodes between hero and heroine. Murugadoss was skeptical when I said that there should be entertainment in the flashback episode of Tagore and I have also suggested that hero shouldn’t die. Murugadoss said that it’s a serious subject and the purpose will be lost if hero is alive at the end. Indra was playing in theaters and I asked Murugadoss to watch that film in public theaters to understand what people want. He was not willing to make the changes. He said that Tagore will become a classic like Alluri Seetharamaraju and Katta Brahmanna if hero dies in end. That’s when we called VV Vinayak and asked him to direct the movie. Tell us about your observation of Charan’s dances? I enjoy doing dances. If we enjoy and get involved in dances, the flow will be natural and steps will be graceful. I got completely satisfied with Charan’s dances after watching Vana Vana remix in Naayak. There is graceful movement even in his tip of fingers in that song. You didn’t have any professional training in dances. How did you become the best dancer of Tollywood? I have to thank my manager SP Venkanna Babu, who also produced Donga Mogudu film. I was dancing for a song for a film in my early days of career. I thought that I danced excellently. I asked Venkanna Babu for feedback. He said ‘venaka mundu emi teda ledu’. He meant that there was no difference between the group dancers and me. That’s when I realised that as a hero I should show my speciality compared to background dancers. I changed my attitude and worked harder on dances to be different from others. Tell us about your heroines? Who do you rate as best dancer? I feel that Sridevi is the best dancer I have ever worked with. Working for ‘Abbani Teeyani Debba’ was so enjoyable. Radha and Rambha are very 100

September, 2014

passionate dancers and they enjoy while dancing. I had a peculiar experience with Bhanu Priya to start with. She is an excellent dancer and a trained classical dancer. When we danced together for the first song, both of us did well as individuals, but the sync and grace was missing. I was looking at her and trying to interact while dancing, but she was doing it individually. When I asked her about it, she replied that she has to be the best otherwise I (Chiranjeevi) will dominate. I explained to her that we are playing lovers and we should look at each other and enjoy it together while dancing. Then we did the song in a well-synchronized fashion. What’s the reason for producing 150th film by your family? The production cost has gone up a lot. Hero and director are looking for their big remunerations. Producer is not getting anything on his table after film is complete. As a hero, I act like a custodian/ watchdog of budget for my films. It should be a winwin situation for everybody involved in filmmaking. Is Charan following your principles? Yes. Orange was an exception. Orange went overboard because of misappropriation by the executive producer. It was our mistake. Let me give you an example. Dharani came up with a nice script for Merupu film. But he has asked for a budget of 40 crores. I asked him to reduce the budget to 30 crores. He didn’t budge. There is nothing wrong with the script. But at that point of time, putting 40 crores on a film was uneconomical. I asked producer NV Prasad if we can stall the film and start another film with a reasonable budget. He has obliged. That’s how Racha film was made. It went on to become a big hit and made profits to the producers. After watching the rushes of Govindudu Andari Vaadele, we felt that a character is not bringing the required emotion. I asked Ganesh Bandla about the budget impact of replacing a couple of actors and he said that it’s possible. They have shot for 15 working days with those actors. Krishna Vamsi roped in Prakash Raj and Jayasudha. They reshot the same scenes in 8 days with Prakash Raj and Jayasudha. I have also asked Charan to sacrifice a part of his remuneration so that producer will not feel the pinch. There is nothing wrong in stalling a film or altering key actors. We should not go for prestige/ pride. We have to look for the safety of producer.

There are speculations about brothers (Chiranjeevi - Pawan Kalyan) getting separated due to political and ideological differences? We are born from the same womb and we have the same blood flowing in us. We share strong bonding since childhood. He is my kid brother. I have chosen my path and he has chosen his path. I have no complaints about his path/ideology. We share the same bonding. Politics is different and personal life is different!! What are your plans for this birthday? I am going to Nepal along with my family to visit a temple. We then visit a spa for rejuvenation therapy. Ram Charan is going to hold my birthday celebrations here at Chiranjeevi Charitable Trust.

iPhone 5s at a glance

If you buy iPhone for T-Mobile, it will arrive with a nano-SIM card already installed that you can activate by visiting an Apple Retail Store or a T-Mobile store or by calling T-Mobile. If you buy a SIM-free iPhone, you will need to purchase a GSM-compatible nano-SIM card separately.

Forward thinking. With iPhone 5s, Apple designers and engineers found ways to add even more features while preserving the thin, light design. These features aren’t just what’s technologically possible, but what’s technologically useful.

Touch ID. A new fingerprint identity sensor. Put your finger on the Home button, and just like that your iPhone unlocks. Your fingerprint can also approve purchases from iTunes or the App Store.

Suno Suno is always a refreshing collection to see because it never sticks to the go-to fall palette of blacks, navys, greys and nudes. Suno always rises to the occasion with signature prints and a whimsical attitude towards dressing. This season featured midi-length skirts, beaded embellishments, and sophisticated layers. Tommy Hilfiger The Tommy Hilfiger show was like a visit to a ski resort where everyone happened to be gorgeous: convenient, right? All of the girls marched to ‘60s tunes in shearling bomber jackets, patched jeans, and pleated skirts. With beanies topping off every look, it was very clear what the required dress code is to be a part of this crew. It’s okay if you don’t have the legs, you can still have the style.

Rosie Assoulin New York-based designer Rosie Assoulin knows a thing or two about making clothes for the modern woman. This season she pulled out all the stops, outfitting a dream wardrobe for the every girl. Clean-cut separates for work? No problem. An evening gown for a charity event? She’s got it. And something a little more elegant to run errands in? Well how about a cashmere sweatsuit? That’s right, she has one. 120

Thakoon Thakoon’s fall collection was a virtual paradise. The brightest of colors set alongside larger-than-life floral prints were some of the most exciting things on the runway this season. The silhouettes were also carefully crafted for the urban woman: sweaters that double as outerwear staples, dresses topped with knits, and Thakoon’s signature feminine aesthetic paired with fuchsia for fall. Bring it on.

Proenza Schouler Proenza Schouler never disappoints on the runway. Following a stellar spring collection that literally shone with gold and silver metallics, the boys transitioned to a no-nonsense tough girl look for fall. Intricate and exciting patterns mixed together to produce a high-energy collection that does what Proenza Schouler does best: marry luxury and street cred. September, 2014

Marc by Marc Jacobs The fresh blood at Marc by Marc Jacobs—now under the creative direction of Katie Hillier and Luella Bartley—was most welcome. Even Marc Jacobs himself took a front row seat. It was one of the most exciting shows this season. Full skirts, bow details, and a futuristic vibe characterized the new Marc by Marc girl. After seeing this collection, I would definitely like to declare myself one.

Delpozo Josep Font breathes such wonderful fresh air into the New York fashion scene. With as much romanticism and aspirational beauty as any of the Parisian shows, Delpozo is never one to miss. This season, on the 38th floor of a midtown skyscraper boasting panoramic views of New York, a live band played while the models did not walk, but floated down the runway in embellished gowns of couture quality. 122

Sally LaPointe New kid on the block, Sally LaPointe made the case for her spot on the New York fashion scene with an incredible fall collection. Fur details, jumpsuits, and exaggerated turtlenecks: These are the makings of a dream wardrobe. I could imagine an occasion to wear almost every piece, and that’s an important thing for a New York woman.

Thom Browne Thom Browne’s mystical fall collection was a religious experience. Quite literally, he took us to church. The gold leaf details on jackets, skyhigh mules and Astrakhan outerwear solidified the fact that the fashion industry will be worshiping at the altar of Thom Browne for a long while.

The best thing is to look Natural, but it takes makeup to look Natural...!

We might not have time to spend at beauty salons for shaping up our beauty right. Then go for a beautiful skin, naturally; Mash banana, mix carrot paste, milk and honey, apply this mix at least thrice a week on to your skin… you can find your skin soon changing from dull to bright, healthy and beautiful. Another biggest disadvantage of this season is, our skin gets oily and greasy very easily… apart from washing our face with plain water several times, we can apply banana mash, mixed with some oats and pudeena juice… if done at least once in two days, our skin can be bright and glowing minus greasy, even during this season. If you feel your skin to be rough and life less then mix sugar, besan and milk in banana mash and apply the same on to your skin… within no time; you can experience your skin turning soft and supple.

Vaastu Corner

Vaastu Corner

Vaastu means the dwelling of humans & Gods. Vaastu shastra is an ancient science which helps one to get the natural benefits freely offered by the five basic elements of the universe in which we all live. These basic elements are Akash (SKY), Prithvi (EARTH), Paani (WATER), Agni (FIRE), and Vayu (WIND). Vastu Shastra can be applied by keeping in harmony with these basic five elements of nature. Vaastu Shastra is an edifice science that was developed by our learned people thousands of years ago. Its application today is purely architectural and its principles are based on becoming one with nature.

WATER Water bodies in north or east are considered good. As far as the flow of domestic water is concerned, it should be borne in mind and that such water should be drained out in North - East. Wells, tubewells, swimming pools etc. should all be in the North-East. The water from the toilets and bathrooms, too, should be drained out in the NorthEast. There are sewer-systems in the cities. The Septic tanks or the flow of sewer systems should be towards North - West. 134

September, 2014

FIRE The direction of Fire is South-East. The Kitchen, fireplace, geysers etc. should be placed only in this direction. Alternatively these could be placed in North-West, because it is at 180 degree to South-East. The Vastu Fire Element One can take care of the South-East Corners of all rooms and aim for Hapiness in the family, Good Health, Sound Finances, and Nice Married Life. The South-East corner of every room should be taken care of it.

AIR The air should enter the building from North -East. All the openings and media for air entry such as doors, windows, ventilators coolers, air-conditioners, verandahs, balconies etc. should be in this directions.

SPACE OR OPEN SKY The open sky influences greatly. We can get the effect of terrestrial-energies uninterruptedly. But the buildings prove a barrier to the effects of open sky. Therefore, the importance of roofs or lawns gets emphasized, but the Vastu shastra has refrained from deliberating in detail over it, because it is related chiefly to building construction and we will discuss only this aspect. Traditionally every house in India used to have an open space (Court Yard) in the center of the house.

Khajuraho

September, 2014

India is a fascinating country with each of its cities boasting of spellbinding tales of its past, buttressed by perplex writings on ancient palm leaves and its mythical chronicles that are still a mystery to human minds. The history of Khajuraho is no exception to this. Khajuraho history centers on numerous stunning temples that have withstood the test of time for several centuries. The temple town of Khajuraho lures tourist by its matchless structural brilliance and sculptural distinctiveness that is hard to find elsewhere. A UNESCO world

heritage site, Khajuraho has many Hindu and Jain temples that display the sexual openmindedness of the people during the medieval era. The monuments in the region were mainly the brainchild of the Chandelas. The shrines, mostly modeled after the Nagara style of architecture, show the artistic exuberance of the South Indian dynasty. The city once possessed 85 different places of worship but sadly today, only 22 of them remains. To know more about the history of Khajuraho, read on.

Ancient History There are several viewpoints on the origins of the place. According to the ancient anecdotes narrated by Chandbardai, a court poet, Hemvati, the daughter of the high priest of Kashi, who was known for her matchless beauty, was bathing in a pond. Seeing her impeccable beauty, the moon god couldn’t resist himself and took a human form to ravish her. The aggrieved maiden threatened to curse the moon god but the god decided to make amends for his faults by blessing her with a heroic son who was born in Khajuraho. The infant was named as Chandravarman, a valiant warrior, who built several temples and shrines in and around the region. According to the prophesy of the moon god, Chandravarma performed a ‘yagya’(a scared ritual) so that Hemavati could get rid of her sin. This was how the place came into existence. However, many historians find the story uncredible and relate the origin of the city to the Chandelas. After a nomadic tribe attacked the northern region of Mlechcha, the Bargujar Rajputs moved towards the central plain of the continent and settled as Bundelas and Chandelas. The Bargujar Rajputs were the ones to construct the famous Kalinjar fort in the nearby region of the temple-city. Later, they erected many outstanding architectural pieces within the province that eventually went on to immortalize the city of Khajuraho.

History

Medieval History During the medieval period in the 10th and 12th century, the Chandelas ruled the place. The city of Khajuraho was the cultural hub of the Chandelas while the Kalinjar fort served as their political centre. The district of Khajuraho prospered over a period of 200 years, with several holy shrines springing up. Under the leadership of Chandelas, the place continued to flourish. However, once the capital was shifted from Kalinjar to Mahoba, the prosperity of the Khajuraho began to wane. Apart from the Chandelas, the place also saw influences of several other kings who contributed to the art of sculpting in the region by adding several other temples.

16th to 19th Century The temples of Khajuraho were developed over a period of many centuries and were much treasured by its kings and its local inhabitants, who took great measures to protect the temples from Mughal invasion. The descendents of the ruling kings feared that the temples would be demolished. The place was covered up by thick vegetations and was hidden by an oasis of greenery. In the 19th century, the city again resurfaced when the local people led an Englishman to the lost city of temples. By 1835, the Asiatic Society of Bengal published a detailed description of the shrines in the region. The record was written by Captain T. S. Burt and English engineer. By 1864, Khajuraho underwent several restoration work conducted by the Archeological survey team of India. In 1953, after Indian Independence, the monuments of Khajuraho were passed under the surveillance of the ASI. Today, these temples stands as an exemplary model of artistic refinements of the Indian kings. 140

uraho MUST SEE PLACES THE TEMPLES

The architectural style of the Khajuraho temples is very different from the temple prototype of that period. Each stands, instead of within the customary enclosure, on a high masonry platform. Combined with the upward direction of the structure, which is further accentuated by vertical projections, the total effect is one of grace and lightness, reminiscent of the Himalayan peaks. Each of the chief compartments has its own roof, grouped in such a way that the highest is in the centre, the lowest over the portico, a triumph of skill and imagination in recreating the rising peaks of a range. The temples of Khajuraho are divided into three geographical groups: Western, Eastern and Southern. THE WESTERN GROUP: This is certainly the best known, because it is to this group that the largest and most typical Khajuraho temple belongs: The Kandariya Mahadev. Perfectly symmetrical, it soars 31 km high. Though the four temples that stand at the corners of the main shrine are now in ruins, the main shrine has an exquisitely carved entrance arch with a multitude of themes. Celestial beings, lovers serenading musicians... movements captured in stone, frozen in time, yet retaining a quality of warm, pulsating life. The very stone seems to have taken on the living, breathing quality of the carved figures. Beyond the archway of the Kandariya Mahadev, lie the six interior compartments; the portico, main hall, transept,

vestibule, sanctum and ambulatory. The ceilings are particularly noteworthy and the pillars supporting them have intricately carved capitals. The transept’s outer walls have three horizontal panels showing deities of the Hindu pantheon, and groups of lovers, a pageant of sensuousness, vibrantly alive. Also in the western group is the Chaunsat Yogini, the only granite temple in the Khajuraho group. Dedicated to Kali, it is also unique in being quadrangular in plan. Only 35 of the original 65 cells remain and no image of Kali has survived: Not surprisingly, since this is the earliest surviving shrine of the group dated to 900 AD. Another Kali Temple (originally

dedicated to Vishnu) is the Devi Jagadambe Temple. North of it facing eastward to the rising sun, is the Chitragupta temple, dedicated to the sun-god, Surya. The image of this powerful deity in the inner sanctum is particularly imposing: 5ft high, and September, 2014

History driving a seven-horsed chariot. The group scenes depicted are equally spectacular: royal processions, elephantfights, hunting scenes, group dances. The lavish lifestyle of the Chandela kings and their court is here in all its pomp and glory. Similar in plan to the Kandariya Mahadev is the Vishwanath Temple. Lions flank the northern steps and elephants the southern, leading up to the temple. Within, there is an impressive three headed image of Brahma. The exteriors are profusely carved.

Facing the shrine is a Nandi Temple with a massive, 6 ft high Nandi bull.

here is a mammoth 9 ft high one, its surface covered with figures from the Hindu Pantheon.

Since the first few Chandela rulers were devotees of Vishnu, there are some important Vaishnavite temples in the Khajuraho group, the finest of which is the Lakshmana Temple. The lintel over the entrance shows the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, with Lakshmi, Vishnu’s consort. The sanctum is richly carved and has a three-headed idol of Vishnu’s incarnations, Narsimha and Varaha. The boar incarnation also appears in another Vaishnavite shrine, the Varaha Temple. The statue

The Khajuraho temples are no longer living places of worship, with a few exceptions. The Matangeswara Temple for example is still a place of worship. Dedicated to Shiva it has an 8 ft high lingam. South of this temple is the open air Archaeological Museum, which has a beautiful displayed collection of statues and friezes collected from the area: the remains of long vanished temples.

THE EASTERN GROUP Hindu and Jain temples make up the Eastern Group, which lies close to the Khajuraho village. The largest Jain temple, Parswanath, is in this group. Exquisite in detail, the sculptures on the northern outer wall make this temple perhaps the finest in the group. The themes of these carvings are the timeless ones of every day, mortal activity. A woman sits bent pensively on a letter; a lovely young girl removes a thorn from her foot, the master craftsmen of Khajuraho display here their deep understanding of the trifles that make up a human life. Within, the sanctum has a throne, which faces a bull : emblem of the first tirthankara,

144

Adinath. The actual image of Parswanath from which the temple derives its name was installed as recently as 1860. The other Jain temple in this group is the Ghantai Temple. Though almost in ruins now, it still bears evidence of its original splendour. Particularly, arresting is the frieze which depicts, in graphic detail, the 16 dreams of Mahavira’s mother and a multi-armed Jain goddess riding on a winged Garuda. North of Parswanatha is the more modestly sized Adinatha Temple. The three Hindu temples in the Eastern Group are the Brahma, Vamana and Javari Temples. A double row of apsaras, celestial nymphs, adorn the outer walls

of the Vamana temple. A variety of sensuous attitudes: languid, provocative, mischievously inviting, give credibility to the theory that Khajuraho’s erotica were meant to test the devotees who came to worship their gods at the temples.

THE SOUTHERN GROUP 5 km from the Khajuraho village, lies the Southern Group of temples. The fine Chaturbhuj Temple in this group has a massive intricately carved image of Vishnu in the sanctum. Duladeo Temple, another of the southern group, is a little away from the road to the Jain group of temples. Though remains

of temples belonging to the Khajuraho group have been discovered at Jatkari, 3 km away and even at Maribag in Rewa, it is at the 3 main groups that the imperishable glory of Khajuraho, the sensuous celebration of life, the aspiration towards the infinite, remains.

THE LIGHTS AND SOUNDS SHOW This fascinating Son-et-Lumiere spectacle evokes the life and times of the great Chandela Kings and traces the story of the unique temples from the 10th Century to the present day.Mounted in the complex of the Western Group of temples,

the 50-minute show runs in Hindi and in English every evening. Amitabh Bachchan, the Indian super star, narrates the story of Khajuraho in his mesmerising voice.

Timings of Sound & Light Show at Western group of temples: English: 06:30 pm to 07:25 pm. Hindi: 07:40 pm to 08:35 pm. Entry fees: Foreign Adult: Rs. 350/- Foreign child: Rs. 200/- Indian Adult: Rs. 120/- Indian Child: Rs. 60/-

The 458 Speciale joins the Ferrari range alongside the 458 Italia and 458 Spider and, like all special-series Ferraris, is aimed at a specific kind of owner, in this case those looking for an even more focused sports car that offers extreme driving emotions. Whether on the road or on the track, drivers will feel immediately at one

with the 458 Speciale thanks to the speed with which it responds to every input and the consequently natural control that it offers, even in extreme manoeuvres. This finely-tuned handling balance enables the car to reach the highest performance levels of any Ferrari V8. September, 2014

s with all Ferrari special series models, the 458 Speciale boasts an array of technological innovations that make it a thoroughly unique model designed for owners looking for an even more focused sports car that offers extreme driving emotions. The innovations span the entire car and include both Ferrari patents and world firsts, particularly with regard to the engine, active aerodynamics and electronic controls that mark this car out. Whether on the road or on the track, drivers will feel immediately at one with the 458 Speciale thanks to the speed with which

it responds to every input and the consequently natural control that it offers, even in extreme manoeuvres. The engine is the most powerful naturallyaspirated Ferrari V8 ever, punching out 605 cv at 9000 rpm and delivering an exceptionally high specific power output of 135 cv/l, comparable to power units designed for the track. The F1 dual-clutch transmission’s new control logics deliver an even keener sense of urgency during acceleration, while the Fast Down-shift makes response to commands even more prompt when the car is shifting down through the gears he

458 Speciale also confirms Ferrari’s leadership in vehicle electronics. Its Side Slip Angle Control (SSC) is a world first. Thanks to a sophisticated new algorithm, which computes lateral acceleration, yaw angle, steering wheel angle and speed, SSC instantaneously calculates the car’s side slip angle, comparing it with reference data, and then allowing smooth, controllable power oversteer, by optimising both torque management via F1Trac traction control and the E-Diff electronic differential. Part and parcel of the Speciale’s development included Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tyres which were specifically honed for it in an intensive collaboration programme to boost performance over a single lap in the dry, performance consistency over multiple laps, and grip in the wet.

The cockpit features a distinctly racinginspired atmosphere, with simplicity the order of the day. Lightweight exclusive materials, such as Alcantara and carbonfibre, dominate, yet it still exudes the sense of craftsmanship and sophistication typical of all Ferrari interiors. The cockpit’s ergonomic layout, with all controls either on the steering wheel or clustered around the driver, is boosted too by the bridge which puts the gearbox commands at an ideal angle to the driver. Rahul Dravid could be the new coach of Team India

If the current buzz is anything to go by, then the former captain of Team India Rahul Dravid might return to the team again, as it’s coach. That’s right! Rahul Dravid, who assisted Team India as the batting consultant during its England tour, is being coaxed to take up the key role now. The decision comes after Ravi Shastri’s appointment as the Director of the Indian cricket team. Apparently, BCCI isn’t too keen on continuing with Duncan Fletcher as the team’s coach after it’s dismal Test series performance against England. “Fletcher himself has to decide what his future will be. He is a professional and we are paying him a good amount. So it is natural to expect big results from him. We don’t doubt his cricketing knowledge but we need someone who can also communicate well with the boys and also motivate them to become mentally tougher. We have options when it comes to appointing new coaching staff. Enough feelers have been sent to Fletcher in the last meeting and the BCCI will be expecting him to resign after England tour.” The Indian cricket board now seems to want Rahul Dravid to coach team India. The council wants Rahul, who is currently involved with Rajasthan Royals, to be a permanent mentor for the Indian team. They deem that Rahul understands players like nobody else and the players respect him too. BCCI intends to appoint him as the coach during the home series against West Indies as well as during the Australia tour. Fielding coach Joe Dawes and Trevor Penney are already on the brink of getting sacked and even Fletcher’s future with Indian cricket team seems bleak. 152

Alia Bhatt

A Minute Wit h -Alia Bhatt

Alia Bhatt made her Bollywood debut as a lead actress in the 2012 college romance “Student of the Year”. In February, she won over critics with her performance in the offbeat film “Highway”, playing a woman who starts caring for her kidnapper. In the romantic comedy “2 States”, which opened in cinemas on Friday, the 21-yearold plays a woman from Tamil Nadu who has to battle cultural stereotypes to marry her Punjabi lover. Alia, the daughter of Bollywood film-maker Mahesh Bhatt, spoke to Reuters about her role in “2 States”, what the film “Highway” did for her acting career, and why she considers herself “mediocre”. Here are excerpts from the interview: You are playing a woman from Tamil Nadu in “2 States”. Were there any apprehensions about playing this role? At first I thought I would really have to work on my accent, but after speaking to my director, I realized that this is a modern Tamil girl and she doesn’t have the heavy accent. Also, there is a justification for it, which is that her family has travelled and she’s moved around a lot. Given that the film relies on cultural stereotypes for humour, were you afraid about these becoming cliches? I was also one of those people who believed in stereotypes. But now, when people ask me, are you playing a south Indian, I say no, I am playing a Tamilian. There is a big difference. It will be an eye-opener to a lot of people. We have tried consciously not to make any character caricaturish, but to make their worlds relatable and believable. When a character says “Yeh toh Madrasi hai”, that how most people would characterize a south Indian. Or the house of a Tamil person would look different from that of a Punjabi. That is how we’ve tried to characterize it, rather than having everyone saying “aiyyo” all the time. That is not how people talk in real life.

What about the stereotypes you’ve had? Yeah, like you have these notions that all south Indians don’t eat chicken, or that they don’t drink, and are not open to anything but their culture. Or that a Gujarati will not eat meat or that a Maharashtrian will only speak in Marathi. Your performance in “Highway” got a lot of accolades. Was it difficult to move from a rather intense movie to a film like “2 States”? It was obviously difficult for me to get away from the emotion of “Highway”, because I had become so emotionally involved with that character. But “2 States” looks like it might be normal, but even that is difficult. Just to have an organic, normal conversation, without making it sound like a written dialogue. In “Highway”, it is about this girl who is discovering herself. In “2 States”, I had no business discovering this person or bringing anything of myself into this character. Like colouring outside the lines in a picture would be a mess, colouring outside the character would be a mess in this film.

Special Story As a performer, did “Highway” break boundaries for you? I am not sure your first film did that.

So will there always be scope for doubt in your thought-process? It depends on how much it is. If I am constantly doubting, then I will go a little crazy. It is about not having the know-it-all attitude. You have to give yourself to the director, and not go against his vision. Like when I was doing “Highway”, it was not a performance. It was my life — it was something that I gave a lot to and forgot that it was actually a film. That was why I was very irritated when the film was releasing, because I felt like I was putting up my life and emotions on display for people to see.

No, it didn’t. In “Student of the Year”, I was testing waters. “Student” gave me reach, that she is a Hindi film heroine, can look into the camera and make faces, and dance. It didn’t give me the actor tag and I know it. I never thought I’d get a film that would establish my acting credentials so soon, but I did get it. “Highway” made me as an actor – it broke me. I found an emotional bank inside me that I didn’t You’ve been referred to as one of the breakout know I had. I thought I was a very shallow stars.
