HAPPY LANDING PUNJAB The word Punjab is a xenonym/exonym from the Persian words panj and Āb - which are cognate with the Sanskrit words “panch” and “Āb” that means “five” and “water”, respectively, thus PanjĀb means “Five Rivers”, which roughly means “Land of Five Rivers”. The five rivers are the Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, Chenab and Jehlum (also spelled Jhelum). Punjabi culture much like its Bengali counterpart, suffered a split between India and Pakistan during the Partition of 1947. As such, Punjabi language and culture tend to be uniting factors for the people of India and Pakistan in spite of national and religious affiliations. While most loaned words come from English, Hindi and Urdu and indirectly from Persian, Punjabis around the world have integrated terms from such languages as Spanish and Dutch. Most popular Punjabi dances are Bhangra, Giddha, Jhumar, Luddi, Dankara Julli, Sammi, Dhamal, Jaago, Kikli and Gatka. Tandoori chicken is a popular dish in Punjabi cuisine.
RAJASTHAN Rajasthan literally, “Land of Kings” or “Land of Kingdoms” is India’s largest state by area (342,239 square kilometres (132,139 sq mi) or 10.4% of India’s total area). It is located on the western side of the country, where it comprises most of the wide and inhospitable Thar Desert (also known as the “Rajasthan Desert” and “Great Indian Desert”) and shares a border with Pakistan along the Sutlej-Indus river valley. The Indus Valley Civilization, one of the world’s first and oldest, was in parts of what is now Rajasthan. The rich heritage of Rajasthan manifests itself in its unique art and culture. The latticed havelis, ornate palaces and intricately carved temples, the architectural beauty of forts and palaces symbolize the skills of its artists. Every fair and festival is a reflection of its rich art and craft in terms of bazaars, music, dance, cuisine, sport events, which provides an opportunity to gain an insight view of the life & culture of Rajasthan. GS AT THE PORT ODISHA On 4 November 2011, the English rendering of the name Odisha was officially changed from Orissa to Odisha. The name Odisha is derived from Pali or Sanskrit words Ora (Ura) or Odra Desa or Sumera or Odra Visaya. The sacred environs of Lord Jagannath temple, the eroticism of Konark’s Sun temple, the wondrous caves of Jainism, the mystical monasteries of Buddhism, the paintings of folklore and the weaver’s magic; all stand as meek evidences of an eloquent past and continuing golden present of Odisha (Orissa). A major turning point in world history took place in Odisha. The Kalinga War that led emperor Ashoka to embrace non-violence and the teachings ofBuddha was fought here in 261 BCE. Ashoka’s military campaign against Kalinga was one of the bloodiest in Mauryan history on account of the fearless and heroic resistance offered by the Kalingas to the mighty armies of the expanding Mauryan empire.
TELUGU STATES - ANDHRA PRADESH & TELANGANA Seema Andhra & Telangana (previously Andhra Pradesh), situated on the country’s southeastern coast. Together they are eighth largest state in India covering an area of 160,205 km2 (61,855 sq mi). These states are endowed with a variety of physio-graphic features ranging from Eastern Ghats, Nallamala Forest, Coastal plains to deltas of two major rivers of Krishna and Godavari. They are the largest producer of rice in India, and hence, it is nicknamed as The Rice Bowl of India. Telugu, which is one of the classical languages in India is the official language of the states. It is also rich in culture with various pilgrimage destinations of importance like Tirumala temple, alongside a host of historical monuments to the tourists. These states are the IT hub & more people went abroad compared to any other state. Rabindranath Tagore once said that Telugu is the sweetest of all (Indian) Languages. The famous Tamil poet Subramania Bharati also has sung thus “Sundara Telunginil Pattisaithu” which literally means “Sing in beautiful Telugu”.
