U.S. SUPREME COURT EXTENDS SAME-SEX MARRIAGE IN ALL STATES Gay and lesbian of America will have the same right to marry as any other couples, the Supreme Court said on Friday, in a historic ruling deciding on one of the nation’s most contentious and emotional legal questions.

Celebrations and joyful weddings were quickly followed in the states where they had been forbidden. Justice Anthony Kennedy’s majority opinion was clear and firm, “The court now holds that same-sex couples may exercise the fundamental right to marry. No longer may this liberty be denied to them.” “The dynamic of our constitutional system is that individuals need not await legislative action before asserting a fundamental right. The nation’s courts are open to injured individuals who come to them to vindicate their own direct, personal stake in our basic charter,” Kennedy. “No union is more profound than marriage,” he wrote. The right to marry “reveal that they seek not to denigrate marriage, but rather to live their lives, or honour their spouses’ memory, joined by its bond,” Kennedy said. Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in the 5-4 verdict. “In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than they once were.” The closing paragraph of Justice Kennedy’s opinion states, “No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were. As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants 10

WWW.WISHESH.COM | JULY 2015

them that right.” President Barack Obama applauded the decision and called it “justice that arrives like a thunderbolt.” “This court is not a legislature. Whether same-sex marriage is a good idea should be of no concern to us,” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in dissent. “If you are among the many Americans of whatever sexual orientation and who favour expanding samesex marriage, by all means celebrate today’s decision,” Roberts said. “But do not celebrate the Constitution. It had nothing to do with it.”

JUSTICE ANTONIN SCALIA SAID THAT HE IS NOT CONCERNED SO MUCH ABOUT SAMESEX MARRIAGE AS “THIS COURT’S THREAT TO AMERICAN DEMOCRACY.” GAY AND LESBIAN COUPLES CAN ALREADY GET MARRIED IN 36 STATES AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. THE COURT’S 5-4 RULING MEANS, THAT THE REMAINING 14 STATES, IN THE SOUTH AND MIDWEST, WILL HAVE TO STOP ENFORCING THEIR BANS ON SAMESEX MARRIAGE. US HAS NOW BECOME THE 21ST COUNTRY TO LEGALISE THE SAME SEX MARRIAGE.

There are an estimated 390,000 married same-sex couples in the United States, according to UCLA’s Williams Institute, which tracks the demographics of gay and lesbian Americans. Another 70,000 couples are living in states that do not currently permit them to wed, would get married in the next three years, the institute says. Roughly 1 million same-sex couples, married and unmarried, live together in the United States, the institute says. JULY 2015 | WWW.WISHESH.COM

LALIT MODI – VOLCANIC EXPLOSION IN THE INDIA POLITICS The controversy over Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj helping corruption-accused former Indian Premier League (IPL) boss Lalit Modi obtain British travel documents has triggered the first controversy in the Modi government. The opposition accuses the government of protecting Lalit Modi. The government, the BJP and the RSS had rallied around External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in the wake of charges that she had helped former IPL chief Lalit Modi, facing a number of cases in India, secure travel documents in the UK. Keith Vaz, the senior Labour MP of the Indian origin, has used the name of Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj to put pressure on Sarah Rapson, the head of UK visa and immigration, to grant IPL founder Lalit Modi the travel papers for the United Kingdom. Leaked correspondence from Mr. Vaz, to the Home Office, shows invoking the names of Ms. Swaraj and Sir James Bevan, the British High Commissioner to New Delhi in an effort to expedite Mr. Modi’s case. In less than 24 hours after Mr. Vaz, the then chairman of the powerful House of Commons home affairs selects committee has called Ms. Rapson and Mr. Modi was granted his travel papers.

In his letter to Ms. Rapson, Mr. Vaz said: “The Foreign Minister of India has spoken to me, making it very clear that the Indian government have no objection to the travel document being granted. Mrs. Swaraj has also spoken to Sir James Bevan, who, even though he was on leave, said he would speak to the relevant person in the Home Office. Frankly, everyone has been involved in this apart from Ban Ki-moon.” 12

WWW.WISHESH.COM | JULY 2015

While the government continued to firefight over the Modi-Swaraj issue, Rajasthan CM Raje’s name cropped up in the controversy adding to its headache. The revelation about Raje was made in a document released by Lalit Modi’s legal team. It was mentioned that Raje, who was then the leader of opposition in the Rajasthan assembly, had given a “Witness Statement” in August 2011 to British authorities supporting his case for immigration in Britain. Raje had allegedly said she was in favour of Modi’s immigration application on the strict clause that her name will not be revealed to the Indian authorities. Congress has stepped up its attack against Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje in the Lalit Modi controversy, saying it had conclusive proof that the BJP leader favoured the former IPL chief. The Opposition party released a copy of an affidavit to the court signed by Raje supporting Lalit Modi’s immigration application to the UK in 2011. “Lalit Modi is the symbol of black money stashed outside and Sushma Swaraj is protecting him. It is not Sushma Swaraj, who should resign, but it is the Prime Minister Modi, who should sack Sushma Swaraj because he said he would bring back black money,” Rahul Gandhi told reporters at Kudmura village in Korba district of Chhattisgarh.

“It’s a tale of two Modis. First Modi, that is Lalit Modi, the master of black money who is sitting outside [the country]. Second Modi, who is the Prime Minister and who had promised to bring back the black money. But when it came to bringing back Lalit Modi, he [the Prime Minister] is saying that we [the government] have helped him on humanitarian grounds because his relative is ill. Here in Chhattisgarh, poor tribals are suffering due to animal attacks, but the PM cannot help them on humanitarian grounds,” said Mr. Gandhi. “She is just a Minister in this government and she means nothing in this government. There is only one man who is running this country and the government and he should stop protecting Lalit Modi,” Mr. Gandhi accused the Prime Minister. The Modi government was appreciated by one and all and even the opposition was afraid that they have lost their relevance due to the honest and transparent functioning of the government. The present controversy has damaged the reputation of the government a lot. It is very difficult to regain the faith of the people of this country. Let’s wait and see what is more in store for Modi government.

APPOINTMENTS ROW

GAJENDRA CHAUHAN, WHO PLAYED ‘YUDHISHTHIR’ IN ‘MAHABHARAT’, WAS APPOINTED AS THE FTII CHIEF. THIS WAS OPPOSED BY THE LEFTIST AND CONGRESS SUPPORTED STUDENTS WERE AGAINST THE APPOINTMENT.

16

WWW.WISHESH.COM | JULY 2015

There were protests from students who said there should have been a person of higher stature to head the institution. But the student unions and the protesters refused to see the appointments in other institutes like in Kerala where a politician is appointed. The protests are motivated and is protesting only because Chauhan is a sympathizer of BJP. “The minister refused to comment on the appointment of Chauhan as the chairperson but instead assured that in the future there won’t be issues that hamper the curriculum of the students,” Prateek, a student who was part of the delegation that met the Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley. “We need to discuss the issue with other students first and only then will we take a call on whether we will return (to Pune) or not. However, the assurance by the minister has given us some relief,” Prateek said. The dialogue between students and representatives of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) and the information and broadcasting ministry, held in Delhi did not yield any conclusive solution over the appointments of Gajendra Chauhan as chairperson. The ministry did not blink on the demand for the removal.

Oscar-winning sound engineer Resul Pookutty said that the meeting was positive as far as the academic issues of FTII and upgrading the institute to a centre of excellence were concerned. Girish Kasaravalli, one of the key members of the delegation, told that they had raised a lot of concerns and the minister did assure them about the future of FTII. “However, as far as the appointments are concerned, the meeting was inconclusive,” Kasaravalli said. “Whatever the government says, I will follow. I wasn’t aware about the meetings, but I urge the students to call off the protests and start attending their classes otherwise, it will be a great loss for them,” Chauhan told reporters in Pune. “FTII is being saffronised and people close to the BJP are being appointed as heads of cultural and art institutions,” a student told. This statement reflects the real issue of the motivated agitation. The students are being mislead by the preparators not because Chauhan is ineligible, but only because he is a sympathizer of the ruling party.

The so called pseudo secular group is against anything that is being done by this government. They are afraid of loosing their foothold due to the overwhelming mandate BJP has got. They are not bothered about the merits of the issue, instead they are misleading and misinforming the people. This attitude is to be protested by one and all. The people of this country have to realize the hollowness of these anti-national organizations. JULY 2015 | WWW.WISHESH.COM

oga is always inspired by a master who is called Guru. Guru is a Sanskrit word for dispeller of darkness. The Guru is the principle and energy source which brings light into the life of a disciple. Thousands of Yoga Gurus have guided and helped mankind for thousands of years. The ultimate Guru is the Parabrahman, the supreme consciousness or eternal consciousness. ALL OVER THE WORLD YOGA IS A MULTI MILLION DOLLAR BUSINESS. AROUND $27 BILLION IS SPENT ANNUALLY IN THE US ON YOGA PRODUCTS AND THERE IS 4.8 PER CENT PROJECTED ANNUAL INCREASE IN THE INDUSTRY REVENUE THROUGH 2017. THERE IS AN 87 PERCENT INCREASE IN SPENDING ON YOGA PRODUCTS IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS IN THE US ALONE. 22

WWW.WISHESH.COM | JULY 2015

The recent history of Yoga can be traced to Patanjali (500 BC), Adi Shankaracharya (8th century AD), Matsyendranath and Gorakshanath (6 to 8 century AD). The Yoga movements are inspired and guided by many saints and sages during this time. Yoga can be defined as perfect movements. This includes all the parts of the body, through various requirements of movements. It can be classified as, Pre Position, Neck Movement, Shoulder Movement, Hand Movement, Leg Movement, Knee Movement and also the perfect way of breathing. There are several joints in our body, which needs lubrication and movements to work properly. The food we consume supplies the lubrication for our body and Yoga and other activities provide the movements of our body. In our regular life, some of these joints are overused and some are rarely used, which may create problems at a later stage in your life due to wear and tear. To make these joints maintain their healthy condition, basic movements are necessary. All these years Yoga existed in Hindustan, but the pseudo secular politicians have neglected and ignored whatever is connected to Hinduism. India got independence in the year 1947, but none of the governments gave importance to Yoga fearing the vote banks. United Nations (UN) came into existence on 24 October 1945, but till now the so called secular governments have not taken any steps to showcase the mighty power of the culture and tradition before the world.

Now that, a truly nationalist government head, Prime Minister Shri Narender Damodardas Modi has made India proud by ensuring that the traditions and culture of Hindustan is being prominently showcased internationally. The Indian Prime Minister in his first attendance in the UN General assembly requested for a day for Yoga and ensured that Yoga is being accepted world over and a day for Yoga, 21sy June is being observed world over. It is a proud moment for all the people of Hindustan for Yoga being recognized world over. JULY 2015 | WWW.WISHESH.COM

“YOGA IS AN INVALUABLE GIFT OF INDIA’S ANCIENT TRADITION. THIS TRADITION IS 5000 YEARS OLD. IT EMBODIES UNITY OF MIND AND BODY; THOUGHT AND ACTION; RESTRAINT AND FULFILLMENT; HARMONY BETWEEN MAN AND NATURE, A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO HEALTH AND WELL-BEING. IT IS NOT ABOUT EXERCISE, BUT TO DISCOVER THE SENSE OF ONENESS WITH YOURSELF, THE WORLD AND THE NATURE. BY CHANGING OUR LIFESTYLE AND CREATING CONSCIOUSNESS, IT CAN HELP US DEAL WITH CLIMATE CHANGE. LET US WORK TOWARDS ADOPTING AN INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY,” said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the UN General Assembly.

24

WWW.WISHESH.COM | JULY 2015

The first international day of Yoga was observed all over the world on June 21, 2015. About 35985 people, under the leadership of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a large number of dignitaries from 84 nations, performed 21 Yoga asanas (postures) for 35 minutes at Rajpath in New Delhi. “By proclaiming 21 June as the International Day of Yoga, the General Assembly has recognized the holistic benefits of this timeless practice and its inherent compatibility with the principles and values of the United Nations,” Ban Kimoon, United Nations Secretary-General said. Two Guinness book records were created on the very first International Yoga Day. In the first category for the largest number of participants in a yoga lesson at a single venue, the record was set with the participation of 35,985 people. In the second category for the most number of nationalities in a yoga performance, to achieve this, participants from at least 50 countries were required to perform, participants from 84 countries performed yoga at Rajpath and set the second record. The pseudo secular political affiliates tried to create as much controversy on Yoga by terming it as Hindutva and against the Islamic principles. They tried to give a communal colour to Yoga and divide the people of the country, but many Muslim organizations came forward and rejected the so called pseudo secularist attempt to please the vote banks by igniting a communal angle and wholeheartedly participated in the event. Moreover, almost all the Islamic countries took active participation in the International Yoga Day. Now that the world has recognized the importance of Yoga, there is going to be a huge requirement of Yoga teachers. As promised by Modi during his election tour, here comes a huge job opportunity. This can be utilized by one and all who are interested to take Yoga as their career and to stand healthy. Let’s usher health for all the people. Let’s be the light for the world. Hindustan has many things to give to the world for the prosperity, peace and health of everyone.

FREEDOM FIGHTER

VEER SAVARKAR A REBEL BY BIRTH Born: May 28, 1883, Bhagur Died: February 26, 1966, Mumbai

Some consider him as a great revolutionist, while others treat him as a communist and Machiavellian manipulator.

Veer Savarkar, the one man on whose name was taken, a loud range of applause can be heard. He is one among the greatest revolutionaries in the Indian freedom struggle, in spite of a number of controversies act as needles pinching him. Organised ‘Vaanarasena’ gang Veer Savarkar’s original name was Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. He was one among the four children born to his parents Damodarpant Savarkar and Radhabai on May 28, 1883, in a village called Bhagur in Nasik. He did his schooling at the Shivaji School, Nasik and lost his mother when he was just nine. In fact, these types of unfortunate incidents made him bold and live like a rebel. When he was eleven, he organized a gang of kids called Vanarsena. Savarkar considered Bal Gangadhar Tilak and organized many occasions to play the dramas on his nationalistic themes. ABHINAV BHARAT SOCIETY In March 1901, Savarkar married Yamunabai. Later, in 1902, he joined Fergusson College in Pune. There he founded the “Abhinav Bharat Society”. He had a good role to play in the Swadeshi movement and also joined in Tilak’s Swaraj Party. Because of his inspiring speeches and beliefs towards the patriotism, the British government, who are thoroughly irritated, withdrew his B.A. degree.

Savarkar joined Tilak’s Swaraj Party and founded the Hindu Mahasabha as a separate political party. He was elected President of the Mahasabha and toiled for building Hindu Nationalism and later joined the Quit India movement.

BIRTH OF FREE INDIA SOCIETY In June 1906, Veer Savarkar, left for London to study the law. He then founded the Free India Society, uniting the Indian students in England to fight against British rule in the country. The Free India Society is all about celebrating important dates on the Indian calendar including festivals, freedom movement landmarks, and discussing about the ways to achieve Indian freedom. He was the man behind the people who got influenced to use weapons, against the British. “THE INDIAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE 1857”. In 1908, Savarkar made a research and put his ideas about The Great Indian Revolt, which the British termed as “Sepoy Mutiny” of 1857. The book was called “The Indian War of Independence 1857”. The then British government enforced a ban on the publication of the book in Britain and India. It was later published by Madame Bhikaiji Cama in Holland. To influence the revolutionaries, the book was later smuggled into India against the British rule. SAVARKAR BRITISH

IMMIGRATION

U.S. TO OPEN PROBE AGAINST TCS FOR H1 B VISA VIOLATIONS, IS IT OK? LENGTHWISE INDIAN OUTSOURCING GIANT IS NOW IN HEAD OVER HEELS WITH VISA VIOLATION PROBLEM From Mobiles to Automobiles, TCS has its mark on everything in India. The brand created such a stir in its earlier days that it has become the face of the nation. But now the company’s IT wing, Tata Consultation Services is in the news for bad reason. The US Government has opened an investigation against two of the biggest

Indian outsourcing companies – Infosys and TCS for possible violations of H1-B visa rules. The Department of Labor has opened the investigation against Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys for “possible violations of rules for visas for foreign technology workers under contracts they held with an electric utility Southern California Edison,” the New York Times said.

The American Daily has even claimed that the Department of Labor noticed the layoff of 500 employees by the Southern California Edison power company. The company even asked the terminated employees to train their replacements who were immigrants on the temporary work visas brought in by the Indian firms Senators Richard Durbin of Illinois and Jeff Sessions of Alabama. In this regard, the Department of Labor has ordered for a probe. 28

WWW.WISHESH.COM | JULY 2015

Many opined that the layoffs are “raising new questions about how businesses and outsourcing companies are using the temporary visas, known as H-1B, to place immigrants in technology jobs in the United States.” Earlier NYT brought the news of Entertainment Giant Walt Disney sacking hundreds of employees and replaced with Indians holding H1-B visas. About 250 Disney employees were told in late October last year that they would be laid off and many of their jobs were transferred to immigrants on H1-B visas brought in by an outsourcing firm based in India, the report had said. HERE ARE THE OTHER VARIETIES OF SHAWLS KANI SHAWLS This is another such rare item which would highly be adored by those art lovers, who actually knows the value of the sweat, the craftsman came across, to produce it. In fact, they almost put his heart to bring out each final product. DO-SHALLA The emperor Akbar began the fashion of wearing the shawls, sewn back to back, so that the under surfaces of the shawls were never seen. During that time the most desired shawls were those worked in gold and silver thread or shawls with border ornamented with fringes of gold, silver and silk thread. As the name designates, Do Shalla (two-shawl), are always sold in pairs.

VARIETIES IN ‘DO SHALLA’ KHALI-MATAN: It would be without any ornamentation, the central portion would be completely plain. CHAR-BAGAN: It is made up made up of four pieces in different colours neatly joined together. The central portion of the shawl is designed with various kinds of flowers. KUNJ: Ornamenting the four sides of the corners with flowers

PATCHWORK Patchwork is the key factor of the Kashmir shawls. The patterns are woven on the looms in 12 to 18 inches in length and from one half to two inches in width. The design strips are made on very primary looms and later cut to the required lengths and then joined by sewing to a plain central field piece. To have a variation, pieces may even be woven separately by cutting in various shapes and sizes and then further elaborated with embroidery.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PATCHWORK LOOM SHAWLS AND HAND EMBROIDERY SHAWLS The patchwork loom shawls are made up from separate narrow strips. It consists of a certain number of irregularly shaped pieces joined together, each one balancing the predominant colour scheme of the shawl. Along with the other casual woolen shawls that are generally sold in attractive colours, the plain marino shawls are also sold in the state. There are even instances where a hand embroidery shawl took 5-12 months to come out as a final product. Shawls are generally considered as synonymous with the Far Eastern culture and thus are creating a new trend among them and spreading the Indian culture in the foreign countries too. Especially in the western women’s fashion world, Shawls have already occupied a good market.

INDIAN DIASPORA

TRADITION

TRADITION OF PADMASHALIS The Padmashalis are majorly identified for their specialized skills in weaving the clothes of all the varieties. They are considered as the experts to make the cloth out of cotton and also animate tarn silk. Along with these, the caste communities are also involved in leather and wool-based household industries. In fact these industries are preceding ones of cloth weaving. It developed an integrated process of production of raw material and its conversion into commodities. The Padmashalis developed exclusive cloth-weaving skills, without possessing any skills in production of the raw material. The men in Padmashali caste had no expertise in ploughing and their women are unaware of seeding and crop cutting skills. Because of this, over a period of time, their skill structure has become one dimensional. During the British period itself, Padmashalis are identified for possessing the leading cottage industry in India. In Andhra Pradesh, the Padmashalis are considered as the third largest community, spreading all over the world. They are even known for their visible tendency towards urbanization since the occupation of weaving and marketing cloth becomes easy from urban and semi-urban centers. With the introduction of the railways in 1853 by the colonial British government, the self sufficient rural economy was penetrated. The machine manufactured goods are forced to be introduced, especially finished cotton goods from the factories of Birmingham (making use of advances from the Industrial Revolution) etc., from imperial Britain, the domestic textile industry had to suffer huge losses. This turned as an important node in the rural economy, which naturally showed a huge impact on Padmashali community too. As the demand for the handmade weaving clothes have decreased, many of the urban Padmashalis, had to abandon their ancestral profession with no other choice left and got diversified into various other professions like engineers, doctors, politicians, bureaucrats, businessmen, advocate professionals etc. 40

WWW.WISHESH.COM | JULY 2015

WEAVERS SPREAD INTO VARIOUS GROUPS The weavers in the caste are spread over in different groups and each such groups has a different name. The Padmashali sources its origin to Brugu Maharshi, followed down to Markandeya, Bhakta Markandeya, the chiranjeevi who wins the life from yama. The technique of weaving came from ayoni putra, Sri Bhavana maharshi. In South Canara region, the shettigars, refer themselves to Padmashalis. However, in Kinnimulki, a taluk near Katil, near Udupi, the Padmashalis are known as shettigars. The weavers in Andhra Pradesh has following names (as per the OBC list of central government - List no 155), they are all not Padmashalis. But the weavers, depending upon on the nature of basic material used in the earlier times, the name of caste originated. There are nearly 30 groups of castes in weavers in Karnataka, and Padmashalis are one of the weavers, who are independent of other group castes, with their culture practice based on Vedic principles.

SALIYA - OTHER SALIWEAVER CASTES This deals with only Northern Kerala Malyalee Saliya(Chaliya)s. Some of the other Sali castes are listed here. Padmasali : Andhra Pradesh(Telugu) Devanga Karnataka(Kannada) Saliyar/Padmasaliyar Tamilnadu(Tamil/Telugu) Pattarya Kerala(Malayalam) Shettigar Karnataka(Tulu) Saliya/Padmashali/Devanga is widely and sometimes interchangeably used.

HE DECIDES TO TEST THE POWER OF SRI KRISHNA. BRAHMA KIDNAPPED ALL THE COWHERD FRIENDS AND THE COWS AND CALVES OF SRI KRISHNA. KRISHNA REALIZED BRAHMA’S MISDEED AND DECIDED TO EXPAND HIMSELF INTO SUBSTITUTE BOYS AND CALVES THAT LOOKED EXACTLY LIKE THE ORIGINALS AND HE RETURNED TO THE VILLAGE WITH THEM. NO ONE COULD REALISE THE DIFFERENCE, INSTEAD FAMILIES OF THE COWHERD CHILDREN SHOWED INCREASED SPONTANEOUS AFFECTION TO THEIR SONS (WHO WERE ACTUALLY EXPANSIONS OF GOD). BALARAMA, KRISHNA’S BROTHER, NOTICED THE PARENTS’ BEHAVIOR AND ASKED KRISHNA WHAT WAS GOING ON. KRISHNA EXPLAINED HOW LORD BRAHMA HAD KIDNAPPED THE REAL BOYS AND CALVES. Brahma made a mistake in trying to test Krishna’s power. Life went on like this for a year before Brahma returned. Brahma’s time passes much more quickly, so it seemed to him only a moment. However, when he returned he was shocked to see the boys and calves playing with Krishna, as though nothing had happened. Krishna knew Brahma was perplexed so, he transformed all the boys and calves into four-armed Vishnu forms. Brahma heard music and saw many Brahmas, Shivas, demigods and Jivas (souls) singing God’s names and dancing. Brahma’s mind opened at first to the vision, but then he became bewildered, so Krishna ended the dazzling scene.

Brahma immediately got down and prostrated at Krishna’s feet and begged for forgiveness. Sri Krishna the Supreme Lord, forgave Brahma and advised him to totally surrender unto the Supreme Lord, to eliminate the darkness and achieve the Supreme knowledge. After offering glorious prayers and penance for his behavior, Brahma circumambulated Krishna and returned to his planet.

HISTORY

AN CI ENT IND I AN H I STOR Y

Earliest historical evidence of Mehargarh (Northwest Indian sub-continent) shows the beginning of the civilization in India at around 6500 B.C. It is the earliest and the largest urban site of that period in the world. This site has yielded enough evidence for the earliest domestication of animals, evolution of agriculture and as well as arts and crafts. The horse was first domesticated in Hindustan at around 6500 B.C. There is a progressive process of the domestication of animals, particularly cattle. The development of agriculture, began with barley and then later wheat and rice. The use of metal, began with copper and culminating in iron, along with the development of villages and towns. It has been suggested by some historians that an ‘Aryan Invasion’ in the Indian subcontinent took place around 1500-1000 B.C. However, current archeological data do not support the existence of any Indo Aryan or European invasion into the South Asia at any time in the pre or proto-historic periods (David Frawley). The people in this tradition were the same basic ethnic groups as in India today, with their same basic types of languages. Two important cities were discovered, Harappa on the Ravi river and Mohenjodaro on the Indus during the excavations in 1920. The remains of these two cities were part of a large civilization and well developed ancient civilization, which is now called by the historians as ‘Indus Valley Civilization’ or ‘Saraswati Civilization’. Harappan (Sarasvati) civilization of 3100-1900 BC exhibits massive cities, complex agriculture and metallurgy, sophistication of arts and crafts and precision in weights and measures.

72

WWW.WISHESH.COM | JULY 2015

They built large buildings, which are mathematically-planned. The city planning in those ancient cities is comparable to the best of our modern cities. This civilization had a written language and was highly sophisticated. Some of these towns are almost three miles in diameter having thousands of residents. These ancient municipalities had granaries, citadels and even household toilets. In Mohenjodaro, a mile-long canal has connected the city to the sea and trading ships sailed as far as Mesopotamia. The Indus civilization extended for over half a million square miles across the Indus river valley and though it existed at the same time as the ancient civilizations of Egypt and Sumer, it far outlasted them. This Sarasvati civilization was a center of trade and for the diffusion of civilization throughout south and west Asia, which often dominated the Mesopotamian region. Mehrgarh, Harappa, Mohenjodaro, Kalibangan and Lothal are peripheral cities of the great Sarasvati civilization with more than 500 sites along its banks awaiting excavation. The year 4500 B.C. marks Mandhatr’s defeat of Druhyus, driving them to the west into Iran. 4000-3700 B.C. was the Rig Veda period. In 3730 B.C. the ‘Battle of Ten’ Kings occurred. That was the age of Sudas and his sage advisors, Vasistha and Visvamitra. From 3600 to 3100 B.C. was the late Vedic age during which Yajur, Sama, and Atharva Vedas were composed. 3100 B.C. is the probable date of the Mahabharata, composed by Vyasa. At this time, a tectonic plate shift resulted in river Yamuna, which was a tributary of river Saraswati shifted its course and Saraswati became smaller. It was the beginning of ‘Kali Yuga’. In 1900 B.C., another tectonic plate shift made Saraswati lose Sutlej. This dried up Sarasvati, causing a massive exodus of people towards the Ganga valley in the east. Whence arose the classical civilization of India. Post-Harappan civilization 1900-1000 BC shows the abandonment of the Harappan towns owing to ecological and river changes, but without a real break in the continuity of the culture. There was a decentralization and relocation in which the same basic agricultural and artistic traditions continue, along with a few significant urban sites like Dwaraka. This gradually develops into the Gangetic civilization of the first millennium BC, which is the classical civilization of ancient India, which retains its memory of its origin in the Saraswati region through the Vedas.

DAVID FRAWLEY AND OTHER EMINENT SCHOLARS PROPOSE: 1. 6500-3100 BC, AS PRE-HARAPPAN, EARLY RIG VEDIC 2. 3100-1900 BC, AS MATURE HARAPPAN 3100-1900, PERIOD OF THE FOUR VEDAS. 3. 1900-1000 BC, AS LATE HARAPPAN, LATE VEDIC AND BRAHMANA PERIOD

VAASTU CORNER

Vastu Shastra the science of perfect living Vastu Shastra is all about the principles of layouts and measurements we need to follow while constructing a house or any building. The ancient science of architecture and construction has close relation with Astrology.

Just like Yoga and Ayurveda, Vastu Sastra is an Indian concept which incorporate traditional Hindu and in some cases Buddhist beliefs. Some people simply see the Meta Physics as a blind ancient belief, but many in India follow Vaastu as first and foremost ritual while building a house or any other construction. Especially, the rich and the famous in the last few years started using this age old technology in modern day constructions. The benefits were felt and soon everyone wanted to have a house that followed the basic rules of vaastu. Vaastu means dwelling, which is the home for god and humans. Vastu Shastra is based on various energies that comes from atmosphere like solar energy from Sun, Cosmic Energy, Thermal Energy, Magnetic Energy, Lunar Energy, Wind Energy, and Light Energy. These energies can be balanced to enhance success, prosperity and peace. People believe that if a house is made according to these principles, 76

WWW.WISHESH.COM | JULY 2015

the inmates enjoy all the happiness in life. If it is against Vastu principals, it will be a place for all sort of problems, worries and no peace. In the recent times, Vaastu Shastra has become controversial, as many atheists considered it as arcane and superstitious. Jaipur, the capital of the Indian state of Rajasthan and called the pink city, was founded and built in early 1700s incorporating many of the layout principles for a city found in Vastu Shastras. Similarly, modern era projects such as the architect Charles Correa’s designed Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya in Ahmedabad, Vidhan Bhavan in Bhopal, and Jawahar Kala Kendra in Jaipur, adapt and apply concepts from the Vastu Shastra Vidya. In the design of Chandigarh city, Le Corbusier incorporated modern architecture theories with those of Vastu Shastra.

The new Skoda Octavia caters to a wide consumer demographic, appealing to families, couples, seniors and enthusiasts alike. It is a practical, spacious and comfortable family sedan and, at the same time, offers plenty of power and dynamics for the enthusiasts. In short, the new Skoda Octavia looks poised to repeat, if not surpass, the success of the first generation Octavia.

Design

Sharp is the word. The new Skoda Octavia’s exterior design is all about clear lines and sharp edges. The Octavia is 90 mm longer and 45 mm wider than the Laura, but despite growing in height and width, the design remains well proportionate and balanced. Highlight of the front design is the butterfly grille – the 21 slats encompassed in a chrome surround. The three-dimensional flying arrow badge sits on the edge of the bonnet, flanked by two bold lines sweeping up till the windshield. Blame it on the C-shaped tail lights and the slashes on both sides of the number plate, the rear of the car bears a striking resemblance to the Rapid and it might not be well appreciated by Indian buyers.

80

Interior, Space and Features

Traditionally, Skoda cars get unsophisticated and nononsense interiors and the new Octavia is no exception. However, the cabin is a huge improvement over the outgoing model in all aspects. The dual tone plastics feel softer, seats are more comfortable, cabin is roomier with enough space for five adults and the interiors look more premium, overall. It should be observed here that the new Octavia offers the largest cabin space in this segment. Rear headroom, elbow width and shoulder room have also been increased in comparison to its predecessor. The centre console houses a multi-monitor for parking assist, climate control, vehicle settings and a superb audio system. Octavia has always been popular for the tailgate that swings open widely. The new generation’s boot not only features the same, but also has grown by another five litres to 590 litres. Flat fold the rear seats and the loading volume expands to a whopping 1580 litres.

All engines are turbocharged and use direct injection. The 1.4 TSI and the 2.0 TDI are mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox while the 1.8 TSI hooks to a seven speed automatic DSG. The 2.0 TDI is also available paired with an optional 6-speed DSG automatic. However, you will be disappointed to hear that there’s no paddle shift available on any of the automatic variants.

Ride and Handling The suspension is on the stiffer side so the car has a slightly firmer ride that doesn’t as smoothly iron out the bumps on the roads. It’s certainly not uncomfortable by any means, but you might notice potholes more than you might in the Elantra or the Corolla Altis. I was totally impressed with the tenacious handling of the Skoda Octavia. It did not lollop around through tight twists and corners along the Himalayan highway, and there was plenty of grip.

Safety The Octavia comes with a diverse safety portfolio. On the top of the list is the Multi-Collision Brake, which automatically slows down the car in case of a collision, so that further collision can be avoided. Another significant feature is Crew Protect Assist, which automatically tightens the seatbelts and closes the windows and sunroof when a collision risk is detected. Other safety features include six airbags and Electronic Stability Control among the usual ABS, EBD etc.

When memory is bewildered, intelligence is lost and when intelligence is lost, one falls down again into the material pool.

Meaning of Shloka

Lord Krishna states in this verse that from anger arises delusion, which is the lack of discrimination about knowing what actions to perform and what not. From delusion comes confusion, which is the bewilderment of intelligence and forgetfulness of the truths. From confusion comes illusion, the misinterpretation of intellect in determining the true nature of reality. From illusion, one becomes completely ruined. One loses focus on the goal of material existence and the purpose of human life and lives in the darkness. In other words, it can be said as, who are without knowledge of Supreme Lord, artificially try to avoid material objects and as a result, although they desire liberation from material bondage, they do not attain the perfect stage of renunciation. On the other hand, a person who is in full knowledge of the Supreme Lord knows how to use everything in the service of the Lord and he does not become a victim of material consciousness. An impersonalist, cannot enjoy life due to his artificial renunciation and for this reason, a slight agitation of the mind pulls him down again into the pool of material existence.

krodhat—from anger bhavati—takes place sammohah—perfect illusion sammohat—from illusion smrti—of memory vibhramah—bewilderment smrti-bhramsat—after bewilderment of memory buddhi-nasah—loss of intelligence buddhi-nasat—and from loss of intelligence pranasyati—falls down.

At just 41 years, Rajamouli is one of the few directors stars call up to ask if he has a role for them. Producers offered him Rs 10 crore in fees way back in 2010. Take A Peek At The Set Of S.S. RAJAMOULI’S Medieval Epic BAAHUBALI

Last week, the good people of Arka Media Works invited me down to Hyderabad in South India, the home of Telugu Cinema, to visit Ramoji Film City and the set of their longawaited medieval epic, Baahubali. The film, which stars “Young Rebel” Prabhas, Anushka Shetty and Rana Daggubati, is directed by S.S. Rajamouli, who should be well-known around these parts as the man responsible for the epic fly action spectacular Eega, which took audiences around the world by storm a couple of years ago. Set to be released in two parts, and being filmed simultaneously in both Telugu and Tamil, Baahubali is set to be the most expensive Indian movie ever made, but anticipation for its release is so great it is almost guaranteed to be a monster hit. The first part, Baahubali: The Beginning, will be unleashed on audiences across India and NRI strongholds in July, with the second half likely to be released in the first half of 2016. 94

:::::ANALYSIS:::::

The first half of the movie has been interesting and the narration has been decent. The multiplex audience will be completely pleased with the presentation of the film. The performance by the lead actors has been magical and the complete first half has been decent with loads of entertainment which makes the film racy. The second half of the movie has many flaws which irritate the audience but they have been rectified again at times. Unfortunately the second half of the film is really not up to the mark. It is a bit disappointing.

:::::PERFORMANCE:::::

Anil Kapoor has been decent as a responsible father and Shefali Shah provided good support. The two huge saving graces of the film are Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra. Ranveer’s amazing punch lines and dialogue delivery calls in for an applaud for sure. His liveliness never lets us down. Priyanka on the other hand plays a unhappily married business woman with perfection. Anushka Sharma has been decent and Farhan Akhtar once again proved that he is a versatile actor. The other actors have delivered out

their best. The story of the movie is nothing strong but thin. The screenplay and the narration have been completely written targeting the urban audience. The cinematography, styling and the locations have been fantastic. The film has been shot in rich locations. The music has been decent and the background score has been elevating. The production values have been grand enough and the director has been decent in showcasing the story of a millionaire.

:::::FINAL WORD:::::

Dil Dhadakne Do is sure a delight for urban audience except some flaws in the second half . The leads performance and the grand narration makes the film a decent watch.

Exclusive Interview

I AM A STRUGGLER After scoring the biggest hit of the year with Tanu Weds Manu Retursn, Kangana is now a relaxed girl. She has been blown with offers however she has been quite carefull with her future projects as she has been named as the Female Khan of Bollywood. Here is an exclusive interview of her along with the excerpts of her movies:

WWW.WISHESH.COM | JULY 2015

GANGSTER (2006) I’m proud of my performance but disappointed with the reaction I got because I think it was a much better performance than Queen. The film clicked and suddenly I was on every brilliant director’s “favourite actress” list. But not a single one signed me. It was a lonely battle, me against the world.

FASHION (2008) After Gangster, I was confused. My talent wasn’t helping me get work. I did some bad films just to remain visible. Life In A... Metro wasn’t ‘my’ film, nor was Fashion though I slogged really hard. After

Fashion, people thought I was a dopehead and that was not a good feeling (Laughs). My biggest apprehension was whether I’d be able to convey the complexity of Shonali in the 15 minutes that I had. And boom there comes a National Award!

ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI (2010) I worked very hard although I had very little screen-time in a male-centric film. Milan (director Milan Luthria) really helped me with the character. In the second half, we had to establish the fact that Ajay Devgn’s character gives up everything for

this girl. Is she worth it? Through my look, expressions and limited lines, I had to convey the passion that she feels for this man.

TANU WEDS MANU (2011) The phone was ringing but not with great offers. Milan (Luthria) offered me The Dirty Picture but how many times could I play ‘the girl on the verge of a nervous breakdown’. Anand Rai noticed me in OUATIM in a romantic role and offered me Tanu... . The film changed the game for me. Vikas Bahl was convinced I could play Rani after watching Tanu...

QUEEN (2014) I was confused about why (director) Vikas wanted me for Rani. I’d played a supermodel (Fashion) and a superwoman (Krissh 3), how could I be Rani? I don’t think it’s a great performance. It’s the supporting cast that elevates it. Rajkummar Rao’s arrogance makes Rani more vulnerable while Lisa Haydon’s liberated ways made her appear caged. There are films you do justice to and then there are films that do justice to your talent. Queen proved that the century-long struggle paid off!

TANU WEDS MANU RETURNS (2015) I

am quite comfortable with Anand L Rai after Tanu Weds Manu which brought me wide recognition. I should indeed thank him for choosing me for the project. The excitement has doubled for the sequel after I had a small look up on the script of the film. I felt it is going to be big but the result was huge. I should thank the audience for such overwhelming love and support. Tanu Weds Manu Returns success has doubled my responsibilities as an actress.

K

angana has been choosy with her movies and her recent movie Tanu Weds Manu Returns crossed Rs 150 crore mark in Indian market which is a record for a woman centric film. She has been simply superb in the movie. JULY 2015 | WWW.WISHESH.COM

Of The MOST

EXPENSIVE MOVIES MADE IN INDIA Every once in a while, there comes a film that claims to be the most expensive film in India. And now it’s Baahubali’s turn to make that claim. And rightly so. With an estimated budget of a whopping 250 crores, Baahubali has raised the bar for film production... by several crores. We take this opportunity to present to you a list of the most expensive films that have released in India till date. The amount of money spent is mindnumbing:

MUGHAL-E-AZAM

1.5 crores could be peanuts for a film in 2015 but way back in 1960, it was crazy money which is precisely why this film finds its way into our list.

HOLLYWOOD Kendall Jenner Talks About Biases In Fashion Industry

Selena Gomez Thinking To Date Justin Bieber Again!

Reality TV star Kendall Jenner says she faced obstacles and bias from people in the fashion industry when she first started modelling. The 19-year-old model has posed for the latest issue of V magazine in a black and white shot wearing slinky top, reported E!Online. ”You have no idea how many doors closed on me and how many adults were either initially reluctant to take a chance working with me or who outright laughed at me behind my back,” Kendall Jenner said.

Friends of singer Selena Gomez are said to be worried she may fall back into “old bad habits” and start dating Justin Bieber again since her good friend Taylor Swift has found love with Calvin Harris. The “Heart wants what it wants” hitmaker is feeling left out since her friend started dating Calvin Harris and an insider claims she is considering reuniting with on/off boyfriend Bieber. ”Taylor is totally consumed with Calvin right now and barely has time for Selena. Taylor was always on Selena about staying busy and staying away from Justin.

HOLLYWOOD Carey Mulligan Conscious About Wearing Tight, Revealing Clothes Actress Carey Mulligan has confessed that she is “self conscious” about wearing tight clothing and prefers to sport loose-fitting gowns in order to feel more comfortable on the red carpet. The American diva rose to prominence as the lead actress in the James Cameron television series Dark Angel (2000-2002) when she was 19 years old.

James Franco Likes To Make His Audience ‘Uncomfortable’

Channing Tatum’s Birthday: Shirtless Moments of Magic Mike

Actor James Franco, who features in I Am Michael, about a gay activist who denounces homosexuality to become a Christian pastor, feels films that raise relevant questions in the society, are important. In I Am Michael, Franco stars alongside Emma Roberts and Zachary Quinto. ”There’s the coming out narrative, the fighting for rights narrative, the closeted secret affair narrative, like we saw in Brokeback Mountain.

Oh Fish! It is the birthday of our handsome Magic Mike actor, Channing Tatum. The handsome stripper on-screen turns 35 today (26th April, 2015). The American actor, film producer, dancer, and model rose to fame after his breakthrough role was in the 2006 dance film Step Up, which introduced him to a wider audience. However, we especially women would only love to know Tatum for his portrayal as Magic Mike in the 2012 comedy film Magic Mike, which he produced. The movie was inspired by his early life. ARIES This whole month of July is exciting, the rhythm is fast, and you feel energized thanks to Jupiter and Uranus. Family matters can be tense, Mars brings some tension and nervousness in the relationships with your parents. If you think about vacationing with your parents, organize your schedule in a way you keep some independence and distance. If you want to meet somebody for love, your chances are higher until the 18th as good coincidences can happen that makes it easy for you to connect with a new partner, long-term or summer relationship. If you are in a couple, you feel like partying until the 18th and then you take a calmer pace.

CANCER

TAURUS You are focused on money: a raise motivates you to save money. Or you make projects that need more money than your regular budget can allow. You think about selling stuff on EBay, or saving on expenses that are not mandatory. You will be super smart at that, your projections for the future sound right and you will get rewards. Your parents are also happy to help. Some Taurus are about to move out, they found the home of their dreams, Venus and Jupiter help them to be lucky in that sector of their life. If you are in a couple, you enjoy quiet evenings together. No need for crazy night.

GEMINI

Mercury, Mars and the Sun are in Cancer, be ready to be in an important phase of change in your life.Easy for you to make decisions as you know what you want in a very sharp way, no hesitation, no delay in the action. You are very good at negotiating with your boss for a new position. Some of you are looking for a job in a different company and their chances to find one are really good, so it is time to ask for appointments, as they will be successful interviews. Exercise as much as you feel or you will be nervous: swim, walk, run, Mars is pushing you until August 9th.

LEO From July 1 to 19 Venus and Jupiter are in Leo and this conjunction brings great condition to meet a new love if you are single. And the story can be so perfect that you may not believe it is true. If you are in a couple, commitment is in the air, engagement, and wedding or simply decide to move in together. Mercury enters in Leo July 24, your brain is activated, ideas are boiling, and you are the first one to find the best places to go. You are inspired to write or make pictures of your vacations. You already try your best to be tanned, you love that color on your skin.

Money is priority this month. You want to make sure that you have enough for a big project: moving out, remodeling your home or travelling. You count your money, examine your budget seriously, you don’t want to ask for help, either from your parents or your banker. You are invited by friends during the weekends and your planning is all full, even if you are on vacation, you keep receiving invitations from different people, new friends or old ones, you go from one place to another one. Love is romantic and you enjoy having fun together and you are really busy with the heavy social schedule. But you love that of course.

VIRGO

SAGITTARIUS

Career is at the top of your priorities in June. You may be going through a period of tests, exams, or interviews and it is a good time for you. At the end, you will have some choices and different options, school or work, you will decide what you want. You have to know that Jupiter will enter in your sign in August and you will then enter in a very lucky period of your life. So be positive and don’t play things at a low level, take some risk and dare go to a higher level than what you think. Love is not what you want right now, if you are single, you are happy to be.
