Not only sarees, but also weaves attractive dress materials
WWW.WISHESH.COM | OCTOBER 2015
Fine art Uppada is a town located about 40 kms away from Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. The town is famous for designing the cotton sarees. The weaving is considered as a tradition in Padmasalis caste, who weave the Uppada handlooms in large numbers. The Uppada handlooms are generally made in cotton warp and wept. The fabric quality, be it soft or hard, is measured by the number of counts used in the weaving. Warp and Wept means, the number of threads that are woven lengthwise and breadthwise in a square inch. In Uppada, the lengthwise count is 100 and the breadthwise count is 120. Without using much mechanical aids, the weavers are experts in Jamdani weaving in the traditional method and bringing out a perfect final product. For this type of creativity, Uppada saree weavers have received Geographical Indication (GI) registration in 2009. Uppada handlooms suites all the climates. Though weaving the sarees is coming as the tradition, now the weavers are even able to produce dress materials too, for catching up the trend.
Dyeing Firstly, the yarn should be washed and dipped in the chosen colour in a boiler. It should be turned round continuously, until the colour is evenly mixed in it. Mixing of
the colours thoroughly gives a unique view for the fabric. After getting the required colour, the fabric is then washed and dried and the yarns are later starched. The starching gives the fabric, a permanent colour and also a neat polished look. In the next stage, it is turned in a charka. It is here, the yarn will become thread which is further used for wept.

Kodavas tradition Tigers of Coorg Unlike other minority communities, Kodavas are more blessed at every instance.
16
WWW.WISHESH.COM | OCTOBER 2015
Tradition Kodavas, who are also known as Kodugus, are considered as the tigers of Coorg. They are an ethnic minority. But Kodavas are more blessed, when compared to other minority communities.
How come they are more blessed and what are the traditions, Kodavas follow? Let us check into the details. Explaining about Kodavas tradition, Pattamada Sundar Muthanna, a famous writer says, “Easily one of the most martial cultures in the country, these are a people who ritually worship their guns and swords. Interestingly, till a few decades ago, the birth of a male child was marked with a gun shot, announcing to the world the arrival of a warrior”.
Kodavas can carry guns, without license The Kodavas people have every right to carry on the guns in the public places and that too with no license. This is originally granted by the Kodagu kings. The reason behind this is, the kings over there, failed to fight as they do not have a standing army. Due to this, they had to allow the people to carry the arms with them. The right was formalized by the British when they exempted the Coorgs from the Arms Act.
Marriages in Kodava community
symbolically to portray the duels he fought for the bride.
Kodavas marriage are not an exception from any type of entertainment issues of other community marriages. In fact, it has more entertainment programmes during the marriages, than other community ones.
Groom’s wedding gear has Pichekathis in the significant portion. They are stylishly tucked into the cotton cummerbunds, that hold their wraparound cloaks together.
Firstly, the bridegroom wears a knee length ‘Kupya’, which is a traditional wear of the Kodavas bridegroom. The Kupya appears as a Scottish klit, which is generally used to chop the banana trees, with their carved daggers called ‘Pichekathi’ and ‘Odi kathi’,
No chanting of any mantras or slokas, which we generally come across in Hindu and Brahman marriages. The family elders direct all the marriage procedures. The day before the marriage is called the ‘Uur kuuduva’ or ‘Karik muripa’. On this day, all the preparations are made OCTOBER 2015 | WWW.WISHESH.COM

for the wedding day. The important ceremonies on the wedding day are the ‘Muurtha’, in which the bride and groom are blessed by all the guests assembled. The ‘Sammanda kodupa’ is an occasion, where the bride is given rights in her husband’s house and finally, in ‘Ganga puje’, the bride will be welcomed and accepted as a member of the bride groom’s family.
Kodavas believe in Clan lineage Kodavas stress upon their clan lineage, just like the Scots. Kodavas surnames indicate their clan. Inter clan marriages are strictly forbidden among the Kodavas.
Kodavas give high importance to women WWW.WISHESH.COM | OCTOBER 2015
The most appreciable thing about Kodavas is, they give high status to women. Marriage to the people below 16 years is not allowed in Coorg. Kodavas are against child marriages, dowry and they encourage widow marriages. May be due to the cool climate and the secluded terrain, the Kodava community is known for its liberalised outlook about consuming the alcohol. “Alcohol is offered to gods and ancestors during ceremonies. Children who have come of age enjoy a drink or two with parents,” said Muthanna.

Naga culture
Cult culture followers Not only basic needs, Nagas can even make the luxuries on their own 20
Nagas are expert craftsmen The Naga people are known for their art and craft skills. Most of the people are expert craftsmen among the Nagas. In fact their dwellings are made of wood and straw and these are ornately carved and arranged. The way they construct their huts itself shows their uniqueness. However unique they design, finally, a majority of them use the buffalo heads for decorating the entrances of their dwellings.
Naga Shawls – defines the social status of a person WWW.WISHESH.COM | OCTOBER 2015
Both men and women among the Nagas, weave the shawls. The clothing patterns are traditional to each tribe, and the cloth is generally woven by the women. Weaving the three pieces separately and stitching them together is a common feature of Naga Shawls. It is the identity of Nagas. As weaving is an intricate work, bringing out one final product will take a few days of time. However the designs for men and women differ. Among the Nagas, the social status of the person can be identified through the designs on his shawl. A few of the well known shawls are
Tsungkotepsu and Rongsu of the Ao tribe; Sutam, Ethasu, Longpensu of the Lothas; Supong of the Sangtams, Rongkhim and Tsungrem Khim of the Yimchungers; and the Angami Lohe shawls with thick embroidered animal motifs
Naga Jewellery Coming to the jewellery, they use the beads in unique varieties and complexities, along with a variety of materials, which include glass, shell, stone, teeth or tusk, claws, horns, metal, bone, wood, seeds, hair, and fibre. However, the entire tribe of Naga, wears the similar bead jewellery.
Culture
To be simple, the Naga people can make their own hats, cooking vessels, rain coats, own medicines and anything which can satisfy all the needs of a human being.
Historic and romantic folk songs among Nagas When the Naga culture issue has to be discussed, omitting their folk song and dances will not complete the discussion. It has that much importance among the Naga people. The folk songs
include both historic and also romantic genres too. The lyrics of the folk songs generally include the entire stories of famous ancestors and incidents. When it comes to the seasonal songs, they describe about the activities done in a particular agricultural cycle. In the beginning, the western missionaries opposed the Naga Christians using the folk songs, as they were perceived to be associated with spirit worship, war and immorality. Due to these oppositions,
translated versions of Western hymns are replaced with the folk songs and that made the traditional music disappear from the tribe slowly.
Nagas folk dances The folk dances of the tribes are mostly performed in groups in synchronized fashion, by both men and women, depending on the type of dance. In their every festival and other religious occasions, the folk dances are performed by the Naga people OCTOBER 2015 | WWW.WISHESH.COM

He wanted his sister to marry Shishupala and fixed the marriage. Shishupala was the crown prince of Chedi. From childhood Rukmini heard many stories of Krishna and desired to marry him or die. Learning about her marriage fixed with Shishupala, Rukmini wrote a note to Krishna. She expressed her desire to marry him and her resolution that only he is her husband. She also asked Krishna to take her away. In the letter, she
also requested Krishna not to kill any of her family members while taking her off. She wrote that the right time to kidnap her is when she goes to the temple of the Goddess Parvati. Rukmini sent the letter to lord Krishna through trusted aid Sunanda to Dwarka. Even Krishna heard much about Rukmini’s beauty and desired to own her. But, he was not sure if he had to approach her family as they owe commitment to Jarasandha. But after he received the letter from Rukmini, he decided to kidnap her. Meanwhile, Jarasandha filled Vidarbha with people who were very loyal to him guessing such actions from Krishna. Krishna went to Vidarbha. Later Balrama followed with the army. Rukmini was looking in the crowds for Krishna when she was going to the temple on the day of wedding. She could not find him. When she was about to enter her chariot to leave, she felt that someone
caught her hand from behind and saw it was Krishna himself. He lifted her and sped away in the chariot. Furious Jarasandha rallied all people and ordered to chase. Balrama ambushed all those following Krishna in the outskirts of the city. Rukmi managed to catch up with Krishna and Rukmini. He also swore not to return to without her sister. He fired an arrow towards Krishna but could not reach. Multiple arrows were then fired by Krishna. First one killed Rukmi’s horses and the chariot shattered. Another arrow from Krishna shattered Rukmi’s bow. Rukmi ran towards Krishna with a sword in hand. But another arrow by Krishna shattered even the sword. Rukmini begged Krishna to spare her brother. So Krishna spared Rukmi’s life but cut his hair half and mustache half. It was a great insult to any warrior. Krishna let Rukmi to go OCTOBER 2015 | WWW.WISHESH.COM

Alberta Liberal MLA
Bharat Agnihotri Agnihotri was born on April 9, 1953 in India, and graduated from Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science. Agnihotri is married to Rita and has two children. He immigrated to England in the year 1976, where he lived until 1990. He came to Edmonton and began to work as a realtor in 1997. 34
Agnihotri has earned a number of distinctions in his career, including the Prestigious Medallion Club award, the Chairman’s Club award and President’s Club Award, along with many others. In his spare time, Agnihotri enjoys politics, playing various sports, taking long walks, meeting new people, and spending time with his family Agnihotri first sought election in the 2001 provincial election, as a Liberal in Edmonton Mill Creek. Agnihotri finished second, with 29% of the vote. In the next election, he ran in Edmonton Ellerslie and won with a narrow victory by199 votes. He sought re-election in the 2008 election, but was defeated by the Progressive Conservative candidate.
WWW.WISHESH.COM | OCTOBER 2015
In 2007, Agnihotri sponsored the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (Repeal of Ministerial Briefing Exemption) Amendment Act but never reached second reading. On April 3, 2007, Agnihotri became the first MLA to be named - that is, asked by the Speaker to leave the assembly. This has happened when he asked Minister of Tourism, Parks, Recreation and Culture Hector Goudreau about the Community Initiatives Program, which dispenses grants to community groups. Agnihotri noted that, despite a rule that unmatched grants could not exceed ten thousand dollars, forty-three groups had received unmatched grants exceeding that amount.
He then asked if these groups have anyone who had made donations to the leadership campaigns of Ed Stelmach, Dave Hancock, Lyle Oberg, or Ted Morton, all of whom were cabinet ministers and had refused to disclose the full list of donors from their leadership campaigns. “Can this minister assure this house that groups receiving this special treatment are not secret friends of top Tories?” Hancock rose the point of order and Kowalski ruled that Agnihotri’s question has impugned the integrity of the ministers, and that the question was a party matter that had no place in the legislature. He asked Agnihotri three times to apologize and after Agnihotri refused, he named him.

Judge upholds
‘papers’ provision in
36
Arizona immigration law A federal judge on 2nd September, 2015 denied a request to block the “show me your papers” provision in Arizona’s immigration law, bringing officials one step closer to enforcing one of the most controversial parts of the 2010 measure.
Opponents argued that new facts of racial discrimination showed, that the judge should block the condition, which allows local law enforcement, while performing other state law enforcement functions. To check the immigration status of those people they stop for another reason. U.S. District Judge Susan R. Bolton ruled that the court could not block the provision WWW.WISHESH.COM | OCTOBER 2015
based on the possibility of racial profiling. She cited the U.S. Supreme Court’s June decision that upheld that part of the law. “Without a set of as-applied facts, the Supreme Court has held that it would be speculative to decide as a matter of law that will be enforced in an unconstitutional manner,” she wrote. Bolton was the same judge
who originally blocked the provision in a July 2010 ruling that was praised by immigrant advocates and decried by those who supported the measure. The Supreme Court reversed her ruling on that part of the law nearly two years later. Undocumented immigrants face arrest as they proclaim, ‘No papers, no fear’
nri Immigration
In a separate order, Bolton indicated that her original injunction that is., the last judicial roadblock stopping authorities from enforcing the “show me your papers” provision could be lifted within days. “I applaud the federal court for siding with the U.S. Supreme Court in refusing to block the most critical section of this law,” Jan Brewer said in a statement. The American Civil Liberties
Union, which had asked Bolton to block the provision, said it was prepared to persist challenging the law by documenting racial profiling throughout the state. Alessandra Soler, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona, stated that “Once this ‘show me your papers’ provision goes into effect, racial profiling will become out of control statewide and we intend to ramp up our litigation and reporting efforts to seek
justice on behalf of the victims of police abuse,” But Brewer denied that accusation. Bolton’s ruling blocked another part of Arizona’s immigration law, which created a state act criminalizing the transport and harboring of illegal immigrants. That provision, she ruled, conflicts with federal law.

The country that ate up half of its people – An overview of the Syria civil war
38
With the refugee crisis worsening as many Syrians attempt to flee to Europe, many people may find themselves wondering just how the war in that country got so bad, and why so many are fleeing now. The understanding of the very war is mentioned below with a number of facts to go about with. Syria is relatively a new country in the world whose borders were constructed by the European powers in the year of 1920s, mashing several ethnic and religious groups together. The country was ruled by one of the family from the smaller groups called Assads, who are the Shia Alawites. The ruler of the country had bad and brutal dictatorship since the beginning. The power has been from the year of 2000. Protests began to break against the rule of the Assads. People were tired of the inequity, brutality and the WWW.WISHESH.COM | OCTOBER 2015
corruption in the country. Furthermore, on March 18, Syrian security forces opened fire on peaceful protestors in the southern city of Deraa, killing three. Protests grew, and so did the increasingly violent crackdowns. Assad’s troops shot demonstrators, abducted and tortured activists, and even murdered children. Perhaps inevitably, the Syrians took up arms to defend themselves. Defectors from Assad’s regime joined them. By early 2012, the protests had become a civil war. The civil war grew further and became an international issue. Chemical bombs and weapons were a part of the act and the most suffered were the civilians of the country. It is touted that about 2,50,000 people have been killed in the brutal war with 4 million fleeing to other countries as refugees.
While the war broke out, leaving the refugees uphold and clueless, many people have registered as refugees in the neighboring countries, leaving behind their own country. Initially not many countries were ready in accepting the refugees into their land. But, upon requests and UN’s support, countries like Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan have come forward to take people into their land. Three out of five Syrians seeking asylum in Europe are in Germany, Sweden or Serbia. Relatively large numbers of Syrians also have sought asylum in Hungary, Austria, Bulgaria, the Netherlands and Denmark. While the entire world was talking about the refugees and lending a helping hand for those people who are homeless, the story of a 3year little boy Alan Kurdi came as a shock. The boy was sadly born into a country that is eaten up by war and hatred.
world news
The haunting image of a lifeless, three-year old toddler washed ashore, lying facedown on a beach in Turkey has shook the international media and has forced people to look at the ongoing refugee crisis with new severity. The Syrian refugees sank into the Greek island of Kos, after the boat carrying them sank. Bodies possibly connected with the disaster, washed ashore on a beach in the Turkish town of Bodrum. The father of the child lost his entire family to the sea. His wife, Rehan, Aylan and his first son Ghalib. The family had a great hope of settling into a new house and living a good life in Canada, far away from the life of terror and war in Syria.
While this issue has raised huge waves across the world, it still remains that the man is family-less. People across the world have been showing support in various social media platforms and have been a great support to the father of Aylan Kurdi. While, this is just one part of the known story, there are a million unheard, unseen stories of the refugees suffering to find a place in some part of the world. The real question now is ,does humanity exist at all? Well, but for our bit, we can just help the sufferers through prayers and hope nothing worse happens.

India’s first veterans’
movement
Is One Rank, One Pension (OROP) scheme reflecting
40
demands of veterans?
The One Rank, One Pension (OROP) scheme announced by the government is definitely not a reflection of the demands of all of the veterans. But it is significant, as it is being looked into by the government four decades after it was surfaced. This is not only India’s first veterans’ movement but also its first old people’s movement.
June 2015. A relay hunger strike was organized in the heart of capital New Delhi. Ten former service chiefs alarmed by the situation wrote, requesting President and Prime Minister of India, to accelerate the OROP implementation.
Agitation
The veterans felt dishonored on the pension issue as they think intensely about the preservation of their honor compared to an average citizen. Still the notion of izzat is evoked by Indian armed forces during the training and calls them for ultimate sacrifice. Veterans shared a belief that the political class and the bureaucracy had disrespected their service
An effective agitation was run through the veterans’ movement against the government. The protests were intensified with veterans signing letters in their blood, returning service medals and gallantry besides participating in sit-ins. The national agitation has spread across states and intensified from 15 WWW.WISHESH.COM | OCTOBER 2015

to the nation. Their view of OROP was a sort to fight to regain the honor and pride they deserve. This is the main belief behind sustenance of motivation in high levels among those participated in the agitation.
Shortcomings in OROP Even after the announcement came from the government, a section of unhappy and protesting ex-servicemen have decided to boycott a high tea organized by Pranab Mukherjee, Indian President, to felicitate the veterans of 1965 War. The veterans expressed serious shortcomings in the One Rank One Pension scheme of the Centre in a letter to the President. Already

official events organized to celebrate the golden jubilee of the 1965 Indo-Pak war were boycotted. Media Advisor to the United Front of Ex-Servicemen, Col (Retd) Anil Kaul said, “The government has approved OROP but with so many riders that the OROP definition has been completely destroyed and has lost all its significance. What is the use of soldiers attending an event being organised for their honor even when their legitimate demands have not been met.” A letter was also written by Kaul to all former three Services chiefs to boycott the official functions. In a regret letter to the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Wing Commander (Retd) Vinod
Nebb said, “I look towards you as our Supreme Commander and leader of the armed forces to ask why are you silent? Why would you invite me to an event, which to us veterans is a symbolic of our blood, sweat and dignity and play to the government’s ‘show’ of respect to us and our achievement.” Manohar Parrikar, Defence Minister, and Maj Gen (Retd) Satbir Singh, United Front of Ex-Servicemen Advisor, were also addressed in the letter that said, “If not corrected, it will not only dilute the OROP but will also destroy its approved definition.”
The protesting veterans are insisting on the revision of pension every year instead of every five years. The formation of one-man judicial commission was opposed. The ex-servicemen are demanding commission with three ex-servicemen, a bureaucrat and one serving officer. They are also demanding the dead line to be one month instead for six months for the commission to come out with a report on OROP implementation. Another demand is that OROP is to be independent of the Central Pay Commission in addition to perpetuity in the concept.

ICICI Bank MD & CEO Chanda Kochhar said, “When I say a large part of the thing will get transmitted, it means more than half, but beyond that I can’t sit here and take my asset liability committee’s (Alco) decision.” “We have seen commercial vehicles sales grow in a robust manner. Aditya Puri, managing director of HDFC Bank, said: “When they (RBI) lower the rates, we lower our deposit rates and then we lower the base rates, but it (base rate) is coming down.” Keki Mistry, vice-chairman and CEO, HDFC, said, “If we go by the recent definition, it covers around 60% of our loan book. Our average loans size is Rs 23.4 lakh for new loans in the current year and, therefore, my sense is that depending on the definition, a substantial portion of our book will get covered.”

Sri Krishna Janmashtami As we all know, Sri Krishna is considered as the one of the most powerful human incarnations of the Lord Vishnu.
52
The only objective of Lord Krishna was to free the world from evil and save the humankind. The avatar of Krishna discarded many deadly demons. He played an important role in the Mahabharata and propagated the theory of Bhakti and good karma which are narrated deeply in the Bhagwat Geeta. Sri Krishna was born in a prison in the custody of Kansa, uncle of Krishna, whose only aim was to kill the lord. Father of Krishna handed over Sri Krishna to his friend Nanda as soon as he was born to save him from the clutch of Kansa. Krishna grew up in Gokul and finally killed his uncle, King Kansa. The lord’s birthday is celebrated in a very grand manner all over India in the WWW.WISHESH.COM | OCTOBER 2015

Celebrations The Janmashtami celebration of Mathura and Vrindavan are very grand. This is the place where Sri Krishna had spent his life, are very special. On this day temples and homes are wonderfully decorated and illuminated. Night long prayers are offered and religious mantras are sung in the temples. Devotees cook feasts for the lord almighty. They prepare various delicacies that are made basically out of butter and abhisheka is made to the lord. The festive mood of ‘Janmashtami’ is similar in the rest of the states
as well. Interestingly, our neighboring countries - Nepal, Bangladesh and even in some parts of Pakistan (yes, it’s true) Krishna’s birthday is celebrated with high spirits and echoes the same devotional feeling engrained in their fellow Hindu brothers and sisters in India.

Eatables made of milk and curd are prepared to make offerings to Lord Krishna. Joyful chanting of Lord’s name takes place in quite a few temples of the state. The number of temples dedicated to Sri Krishna are few. The reason being that people have taken to worship him through paintings and not idols nowadays.
Different states Maharashtra/Pune Janmaashtami or Gokulashtami, popularly known in Mumbai and Pune as Dahi Handi, is celebrated as an event which involves making a human pyramid and breaking an earthen pot (handi) filled with buttermilk (dahi), which is tied at a convenient height. The topmost person tries to break the handi by hitting it with a blunt object. When the handi breaks, the buttermilk is spilled over the entire group. This event is based on the legend of the child-god Krishna stealing butter. A participant in this festival is called a Govinda or Govinda pathak.
Northern and Eastern India Utter Pradesh is a place associated with Krishna’s childhood. Mathura, Vrindavan are places that attract major visitors to visit the places during this festival. The people visit the place to participate mainly and to take a look at the various cultural attractions that the place has to offer. People in the city of Dwarka in Gujarat – where Krishna is believed to have established his Kingdom – celebrates the festival by visiting the Dwarkadhish temple. In Jammu, kite flying is an important part of the celebration of his day.
South India In Tamil Nadu, Andhra, Kerala and Karnataka, the people decorate the floor with kolams (decorative pattern drawn with rice batter). Geetha Govindam and other such devotional songs are sung in praise of Lord Krishna. Many people in the South Indian states celebrate it differently from the North Indian states. Small Krishna’s feet are drawn from their doorstep till the Puja room. This signifies that the small Krishna is walking into the households of many devotees. This day is also famous for rangoli
drawing, Krishna competitions in schools and kids dressing up like Radha and Krishna. There are many fancy dress competitions held in schools and private spaces during this festival.
Conclusion On the whole, Krishna Janmashtami is a joyful event that involves all age groups of people. Children, women, men and even older generation take part and share their stories with the rest of the group. This day is rich for its color, tradition and worshiping idols of Sri Krishna Paramatma. This festival replicates Krishna’s love for butter and milk. Mordern day celebration involves a lot more of fancy dress, depiction of the lord’s stories by famous dance groups and other musical recitals. Children are more interested to learn about Sri Krishna’s Rasleela and prefer theatre performances than sitting at home and watching the television. This festival brings out the color, décor and the aesthetic aspect in people. The most enjoyed festival, comes to an end by singing various Bhajans and Krishna’s songs.

What Makes a Healthy
Relationship?
66
Sometimes there are situations where it is impossible to find what is right for you. You will be looking at the world through rose colored glasses in the early stages of the relationship. But at times that rose colored glass turns into blinders and seems like the relationship isn’t that healthy as it is before. Try to take a step back of dizzying sensation and think about whether your relationship has following 7 qualities.
Mutual Respect:
Support:
Respecting each one another in the relationship means that each person values who the other is and understand what they are. He/she should never challenge the other person’s boundaries. The key is that – try to be who you are. Have a great sense of humor and love of reality. This is what he/she needs in your relationship.
Support is not just in bad times that your partner requires. In a healthy relationship, it is important to give a shoulder to your partner whether he/she is happy or sad. It is the best possible thing that you can get out of a relationship.
WWW.WISHESH.COM | OCTOBER 2015
Trust:
Trust is super important part in a healthy relationship. Building the trust in a relationship gradually happens and it depends on the way the partner behaves. It is as important as to trust and be trusted for both the partners in their relationship.
Fairness / Equality: The give and take concept is very important in any
Relationship
relationship. Think of whether you have chosen turns to which new movie to see. As a partner, analyze yourself whether you hang out with your partner’s friends as often as you do with yours. It’s not that you keep a running count, but make sure to balance pretty well all the time.
Honesty: If someone is not being honest, then there will be no trust on that person. So trust and honest are two terms related with each other. Honesty is essential in a romantic relationship and open communication is very important in this case. Do not lie your partner as truthfulness, having integrity and being able to admit when you are wrong are part of honest. Having secret relationship will definitely not be fair in relationship.
Good Communication: Communication is an indispensable part of any relationship and it does not include yelling, blaming, demands or threatening. So try to talk honestly and openly so that miscommunication is avoided in your relationship. The right person will give your exact space for you to ask for something that you want to. So do not worry for that.
Separate Identities: A healthy relationship does not mean to make compromises or something that you are losing out on being yourself. It is important that you both have your own lives and that it should not change. Do not pretend to like something that you do not or
give up seeing your friends. Feel free to develop new talents or interests and move forward making new friends.

Orissa unlike many other parts of India has the prized distinction of possessing an uninterrupted series of temples illustrating the history of the well-defined Kalinga (former name of Orissa) from its very inception to decline, and the Sun Temple of Konark
marks the highest point of achievement. Konark, the seat of the World famous Sun Temple is located in the District of Puri, forms one of the three points of the “Golden Triangle of Tourism in the State of Orissa, the other two being Bhubaneswar, the city of Temples and Puri, the abode of Lord Jagannath.

Sensuality in Konark This Temple chariot of the Sun God on the golden sands of the Bay of Bengal is a 13th Century architectural marvel. Today Konark is not merely a symbol of Orissa’s great architectural craftsmanship, but also the most sought after centre of attraction for tourists all over the World. Its serene atmosphere coupled with a quiet, but majestic seashore is regarded as an ideal place for holidaying by domestic as well as foreign tourists. On the eastern sea coast is the ruins of a temple, exquisitely built to resemble a gigantic chariot with impeccably carved wheels, columns and panels. It
stands as a mute reminder of the times when Orissan architecture has reached its pinnacle.
History King Narasimha Deva-I of the Ganga Dynasty had ordered this temple to be built as a royal proclamation of the political supremacy of his dynasty. A workforce of 12 hundred artisans and architects invested their creative talent, energy and artistic commitment for an exhausting period of 12 years. The king had already spent an amount equivalent to the state’s revenue receipts of 12 years. However
the completion of the construction was nowhere near sight. Then the king issued a final command that the work be completed by a stipulated date. The team of architects headed by Bisu Maharana was at its wit’s end. It was then that Dharmapada the 12 year old son of the chief architect Bisu Maharana arrived there as a visiting onlooker. He became aware of the anxiety looming large among the architects. Although he did not have any practical experience of temple construction, he was thorough in his study of the theories of temple architecture. He offered to solve the confounding OCTOBER 2015 | WWW.WISHESH.COM

problem of fixing the last coping stone at the top of the temple. He surprised everyone by doing that himself. But soon after this achievement the dead body of this adolescent prodigy was found on the sea beach at the foot of the temple. The most popular cause of the destruction of this magnificent temple rests with the Kalapahad for the fall of Konark temple. According to the history of Orissa, Kalapahad invaded Orissa in 1568. Including Konark temple, he had also destroyed a number of Hindu temples in Orissa. It is described in the Madala Panji of Puri Jagannath temple that Kalapahad attacked Orissa in 1568 and it was an evil hour for Orissa. Including Konark temple, he broke most of the images in most of the Hindu temples in Orissa. Though it was impossible to break the Sun temple of Konark, the stone walls of which are of 20 to 25 feet thick he somehow managed to displace the Dadhinauti (Arch stone) and thus made a way for the temple to collapse. He also broke most of the images and other side temples of Konark. Due to the displacement of the Dadhinauti, the temple WWW.WISHESH.COM | OCTOBER 2015
gradually collapsed and the roof of the Mukhasala also got damaged due to the stroke of the stones falling down from the temple top. Consequent upon, Orissa came under the Muslim administration in 1568 and there were constant attempts to destroy the Hindu temples. The Pandas of Puri, to save the sanctity of the Puri temple, took away the Lord Jagannath from the Srimandir and kept the image in a secret place. Similarly, it is said that the

Indian Travelogue Pandas of Konark took away the presiding deity of the Sun temple out of the temple and put under sand for some years. Latter the said image was taken to Puri and kept in the temple of Indra in the compound of the Puri Jagannath temple. According to others, the Puja image of the Konark temple is yet to be discovered. But some hold the view that the Sun image now kept in the National Museum, Delhi was the presiding deity of the Konark Sun temple.
The Black Pagoda The main Temple was called by European sailors “The Black Pagoda” as it formed an important landmark for them in their coastal voyage. Contrasting to this, the white washed Temple of Lord Jagannath at Puri was known as the white pagoda.
Legends “Konarka”, the place bears a name composed of two World elements: Kona means corner and Arka meaning the Sun. The Sun god worshipped in Ark Kshetra is also called Konark. In ‘Brahma Purana’ the Sun God in Ark-Kshetra has been described as Konaditya. It is described in Purushotham Mahatmya
that Lord Vishnu after killing the demon Gayasur, to commemorate the glory of his victory, placed his Shankha (conch) in Puri, Chakra (disc) in Bhubaneswar, Gada (mace) in Jajapur and Padma (lotus) in Konark and they were later known as Shankha Kshetra, Chakra Kshetra, Gada Kshetra and Padma Kshetra respectively. The five supreme Gods worshipped by Hindus were Ganesh (destroyer of obstacles and fulfiller of desires), Vishnu (the cosmic sustainer of the phenomenal universe), Siva (the cosmic destroyer of the universe), Durga (the mother goddess and source of all energies), and the Sun (the life giving energy). They are called Pancha-Devata. In Orissa there are five different Kshetra or religious centers celebrated for these Pancha Devata viz: Vinayak or Ganesh Kshetra at Maha Vinayak hills in the district of Cuttack, Vishnu or Shankha (the attributes in the hands of Lord Vishnu) Kshetra at Puri, Siva or Ekamra Kshetra at Bhubaneswar, Durga or Viraja Kshetra at Jajpur or Yajanapur

In gratitude, he decided to erect a temple in the honour of Surya. The day following his cure, while Samba was bathing in the Chandrabhaga he discovered an image of the Sun God, which had been fashioned out of Surya’s body by Viswakarma. Samba installed this image in a temple built by him in Mitravana, where he propitiated the God. Since then throughout the ages this place has been regarded as sacred”. A shallow pool of water is known as the Chandrabhaga, where even now crowds of pilgrims take bath before sunrise on the seventh day of the bright half of the month of Magha (January-February). A fair also takes place on this occasion. Magha-Saptami is mentioned in the Madala Panji as one of the festival of this holy centre. It is also referred to the Brahma Purnima in connection with the description of Konark.

These ancient municipalities had granaries, citadels and even household toilets. In Mohenjodaro, a mile-long canal connected the city to the sea and trading ships sailed as far as Mesopotamia. The Indus civilization extended over half a million square miles across the Indus river valley and though it existed at the same

This Sarasvati civilization was a center of trade and for the diffusion of civilization throughout south and west Asia, which often dominated the Mesopotamian region. of a building. The site (Kshetra) is the basic requirement and utmost care must be taken in its selection. Vastu Shastrahas given the utmost importance for the selection of a right plot and has set down several significant principles.
Types of soil Earth is classified according to its color like brick red, dark brown, black, yellow or mixed, according to its smell, texture and taste. Black and clay soil is not good for construction. 1. The soil, which is having white in color, having lotus smell, sweet taste and which contains greenery is considered very good. WWW.WISHESH.COM | OCTOBER 2015
2. The soil, which is having red in color, smelling blood and astringent in taste is good but needs some attention. 3. The soil, which is having yellow/pale green in color, grainish smell and sour taste is average and needs a lot of rectification before commencement of work. 4. The soil, which is having black in color, having pungent
smell and bitter taste should be avoided as it is not auspicious for construction of the houses.
Location and buying The location of the plot is very important as the surroundings affect the user directly and indirectly. 1. One should not buy the land from people suffering

from prolonged sickness or who have become insolvent, distressed or unfortunate. 2. The soil of the land should not contain anthills, bones, skeletons. 3. Old houses which are damaged due to fire, lighting, rain and storm etc., are not good. 4.
You should not buy the
land which is sandwiched between two huge buildings. 5. The plot at the T- junction should be avoided. Topography and surroundings The four directions, the shape, the existence of highways, cremation places, rivers, wells, places of worships, they all influence the Vastu of the place.
1. There should not be any cemetery graveyard, tomb adjacent to the plot or in front or the back. 2. A temple, church, mosque also should not be in front of any house. 3. Falling of shadows of the temples and trees nearby on the main building brings undesirable problems.

Facing of the plots are considered important, but there is a wrong notion that North and East facing plots are better than South and West facing plots. This is not true, all the directions are equally important. 1. The plot should be either square or rectangle in shape. 2. Irregular shapes should be avoided or should be cured before construction. 3. The site should be level or sloping towards North or East or North-East.

enjoyment and material opulence, and who are bewildered by such things, the resolute determination of devotional service to the Supreme Lord does not take place.
Explanation The spiritual understanding which leads to a fixed determination is not achieved by those whose minds are carried away by flowery euphemisms which are temporarily so appealing to the mind of those of limited understanding. When the mind is fixed for understanding the self, it is called samādhi. “Samādhi” is neither possible for persons who are interested in the material sense enjoyment nor for those who are bewildered by such temporary things. Regarding the conceptions of heaven as the highest goal, people foolishly endeavour to attain it from the purview
of their limited understanding and believing, that once they reach there, they can fully enjoy themselves eternally. Those who are enslaved to wealth, enjoyment and power for their own sake, never are able to receive the spiritual intelligence. To reach the sublime salvation one has to surrender all the actions for the satisfaction of the Supreme Lord. Those who relive only in the words of the Vedas are known as Vedavad ratah. They speak only of the pleasures derived from actions. Those who speak about the Vedas in expectation of fruits are said to relive therein, and thus they are motivated by desire. The essence and the objective of the Vedic scriptures is knowledge of the Ultimate, which is the Supreme Lord, who is very pleased by those who are devoted to Him.

Ganesh Chaturthi also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi is one festival, which is celebrated with a lot of devotion and enthusiasm across India. Lord Ganesh is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati with an elephant head. The festival is celebrated on Shukla Chaturthi of the Hindu month of Bhadra as the birthday of Lord Ganesh, who is the symbol of prosperity, wisdom and good fortune. Mythology Hindu Puranas give the mythological basis of Vinayaka Chaturthi. While taking bath Parvati makes an idol out of the dirt that came out from her body and placed the idol outside as she wanted somebody to guard from outside and don’t want
anyone to enter. Obliging to her order, idol did not even allow lord Shiva (Parvathi’s husband) to enter inside. This made lord Shiva furious due to which he instantly severed the idol’s head. After finishing the bath, Parvathi came out and saw the idol lying down. She explained to lord Shiva about her creation of the idol and reason behind placing the idol before the door. The idol was Parvathi’s manas putra (son) and hence the son of Shankar or Shiva even. Regretting for his deed, Shanker ordered his servant Gan to get a head of the first living being he sees lying. As the servant saw an elephant lying down, he cut the head of the elephant and got it to Shiva. The elephant’s head
was attached to the body of Parvati’s son. As Gaj means elephant and “anan” means head, Parvati’s son was called as ‘Gajanan’ from then. He is also known as Ganesh as he was made the deity of his armies by Shiva. Tradition As a tradition, Ganesha idols are bought to homes by Hindus to worship for a period between 1 day and 11 days. The sizes of the idols vary from 3/4 inches up to 25 feet, based on one’s choice. Even outdoor tents are organized for people to visit and pay homage to Lord Ganesha that day. Prasads like modaks are mainly offered to Ganesha on the eve. The lord is worshipped morning and evening on all days. Idols are brought out amid OCTOBER 2015 | WWW.WISHESH.COM

colorful musical procession on the last day to traditionally immerse in water during which people make slogans like “Ganapati Bappa Morya, Purcha Varshi Laukariya”. This means people are urging god to come again next year. Usually the final offering is flowers, coconut and camphor.
Importance of worship Hindu mythology marks Lord Ganesh as the one
who removes obstacles i.e. “Vigana Harta” and even the one who grants intelligence i.e. “Buddhi Pradaayaka”. Hence the festival is most important for every one especially students to take the lord’s blessings to illuminate their minds. As Lord Ganesh is Vigana Harta, his name is taken before any puja or any auspicious work. Ganesha is associated with several stories revealing his cleverness and calmness in dealing with complicated matters. The lord is
traditionally praised with several names like Gajanana, Ekdanta, Dhoomraketu, Sidhdhi Vinayaka, Vakratunda and many more. Freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak considered the Ganesha Chturthi celebration as a community event and made use of the occasion as a chance to bring all sections of Hindus together. The celebrations are carried on every year with a lot of enthusiasm all through India.

Story Sooraj (Sooraj Pancholi) is a guy with great heart and he appears as a strong going goon. Sooraj gets struck between Pasha (Aditya Pancholi) and Inspector General Mathur (Tigmanshu Dhulia), he will be asked to kidnap Radha (Athiya Shetty) who happens to be the daughter of IG Mathur. Analysis : The first half of the movie has been decent except some flaws with the love story and the chemistry between the lead actors taking the major role. The narration has been completely old fashioned and on the whole the complete first half has been ok. The second half of the movie is a complete downfall and is the major drawback of the movie. The movie has been dragged completely and the major plot has been shot exactly like the original film which is the main drawback. If the director has done some changes, the movie should have been far better. On the whole the complete second half of the movie is a downfall.

The second half of the movie lacks everything and the film dips completely. The screenplay and the narration of the movie have been completely below the line which make the film horrible. The entire star cast has been completely wasted and the second half of the movie is the major drawback of Welcome Back.
Final Word: Welcome Back is a film that has no proper plot and execution. All the lead characters have been wasted and it can be ignored completely.

O
n Tuesday, reports surfaced that the Olsen Twins are being sued by a former intern at the moguls' fashion house, The Row. The intern, Shahista Lalani, has organized a class action lawsuit with 40 other interns that are demanding compensation for 50 hour work weeks they endured without pay or college credit. Not to mention the interns allege they worked under horrible and excruciating conditions!
Olsen Twins Kirsten has never my favorite, but Drop Dead Gorgeous is one of my all-time favorite.
I
bring this up because Dunst stars in season two of FX’s crime anthology, Fargo, and hearing her Minnesota accent is giving me fond Drop Dead Gorgeous memories. That movie is perfect. And season one of Fargo is damn near perfect, which, considering its source material is the Coen Brothers movie, is actually a huge feat.
