WHAT IS THE WHAT IS THE FUTURE LAB? FUTURE LAB? The FutureLab was conceived in partnership between Accelerate, Wentworth Innovation + Entrepreneurship Center and the Architecture Department. It is a unique experience for co-op students [Innovation Fellows] to turn the current COVID19 crisis into an innovation opportunity and to create insights and future thinking that could inform a variety of industries as more disruptions through pandemics and climate change are expected over our lifetimes. The COVID-19 pandemic is having an enormous impact on the world and has introduced new norms to how we work, educate, and live in a very short period of time. Experts predict that pandemics and climate change will continue to disrupt our lives in the future. This pandemic illustrates that we can no longer ignore urban and environmental issues and instead use them as an opportunity to look ahead, develop thought leadership, ideas, and future orientation for thoughtful discourse and dialog across a variety of disciplines. For 13 weeks and operating in teams, the fellows will define new problems, apply different models, and produce concepts, ideas and suggested implementations. Innovation Fellows will interact with professionals from industry, community, and government organizations across disciplines and from Boston’s ecosystem.

Staff and faculty mentors will guide each team and ensure interdisciplinary inspiration and encourage innovation and problem solving. Fellows will also have the opportunity to immerse themselves in future scenarios planning, creative innovation methodologies and team development strategies in a virtual environment while strengthening their employability well beyond their discipline knowledge. A significant outcome of the Future Lab will be a digital publication with insights uncovered by each team that will be distributed to Wentworth Co-op employers, alumni and the larger Boston community and showcase Fellows future thinking and thought leadership Fellows can select a theme among the following three choices: [1] Future of Cities, [2] Reinventing Spaces, [3] Impact & Society.

GLOBAL GLOBAL INNOVATION INNOVATION COLLECTION COLLECTION In the first two weeks of the FutureLab the Innovation Fellows embarked on a journey of discovery and inspiration. Every day individuals from different disciplines, well known in their local ecosystem and within their respective fields, shared their insights with the FutureLab. All are cross-thinkers committed to solving problems, working across verticals and positioning the world for a better future.

The Daily Topics included: - Impact + Society - Future of Work - Cities - Work/Life Spheres - Living Environments - Healthcare - Sustainability - Retail + Consumer

The days were guided by a Daily Topic and Innovation Fellows used the speakers as a jump off point to dive deeper. They researched global innovations on a daily basis and negotiated as a team, which ones will be advanced as their team’s Top 5 Innovations for their weekly Friday presentation. The results of their work can be found in this first installment of the FutureLab Insight Report.

The vending machine offers masks and hand sanitizers at reasonable prices to residents. They are easily accessible and can be placed flexibly across locations in the city as well as in public and office buildings. This concept could expand to offer additional supplies such as antibody testing or utilized for completely different purposed that respond to local needs.

SOCIAL DISTANCING HATS

Yangzheng Primary School // Hangzhou, China

https://bit.ly/3dYW2m4 Schools are opening back up but operating differently. Keeping a safe distance can be difficult to visualize and perform especially for schoolchildren who are used to playing around with each other. The social-distancing hat teaches kids about history, proper coronavirus precautions, and creativity. After almost three months off the children were required to create a hat with two long wing-like flaps decorated to their liking prior to return. This concept originates from the Song Dynasty where court officials had to wear similar hats to prevent conspiring during meetings. If the kids’ hats were to touch walking down the hall, they would be reminded to keep their distance.

FOOT OPERATED ELEVATORS Seacon Square Mall // Bangkok, Thailand

https://bit.ly/2MMkGua Malls, workspaces, apartment buildings, and many similar structures are usually used or occupied by an enormous amount of people. This density creates a problem in the building amenities that is used the most. These amenities usually require touching and are constantly being used. A mall in Thailand has transformed all elevator buttons into foot operated pedals, this has not only reduced the risk, but also saved time and eliminated worries about risk of infection.

This visualization from Purdue University shows how tiny invisible droplets from a single cough can flow through the cabin of a Boeing 767 passenger jet. The model is based on the assumption that the 2003 SARS virus was airborne. Airlines spent weeks touting the safety of flying and their steps against the coronavirus, passenger cabins still pose a danger for the spread of infectious diseases, experts said. It is a problem of biology, physics and pure proximity, with airflow, dirty surfaces and close contact with other travelers all at play.

COFFIN-BED

Rodolfo Gomez - ABC Display // Bogota, Colombia

https://reut.rs/2YrtpY7

Given the lack of hospital beds and funeral coffins in several South American countries during the outbreak of COVID-19, a Colombian businessman developed a solution that addresses both deficiencies, thus was born the coffin-bed. The beds are constructed of corrugated cardboard; they have the standard size of a hospital stretcher but weigh much less. The beds can be collapsed and covered to serve as a coffin in the event that a patient passes await either during treatment or while awaiting treatment. The cardboard makes for a light construction material but it is able to support at least 150 kilos (330 lbs). The cardboard beds can be produced quickly in large numbers and have the potential to alleviate lacking hospital capacity and collapsing funeral services especially in rural areas.

Larry Chan, Principal, Chan Architecture + Urban Planning

Tom van Arman, Founder & Director, TAPP/Netherlands

Anne-Catrin Schultz, Associate Professor, Architecture, Wentworth

In FutureLab Talk #5 Larry Chan, from Chan Architecture & Urban Planning, took us through a discussion on urban design and planning. The discussion focused on the effects of social distancing and increasing space as well as defining the limits of urban design in order to keep cities accessible to those from lower incomes, age and those who have immigrated into the United States. Larry’s keys to reentering and designing cities require will, creativity, and funding. Larry has a wealth of interdisciplinary insights and philosophical underpinnings when approaching cities and urban planning and he provided thoughtprovoking concepts.

In FutureLab Talk #6 Tom van Arman [TAPP] shares smart city solutions especially in light of COVID-19. He is an architect and urbanist based in Amsterdam who works with local governments, industry leaders, and maker-communities to create living labs. In 2010 Tom founded Tapp, an award winning agency enabling local governments and industries to become leaders in bottom up digital revolution. Using agile and lean start-up methodologies, Tapp works with public and private partners to rapid prototype solutions to solve urgent urban problems. In 2018 Tom co-founded CITIXL (City Innovation Exchange Lab) to share solutions with municipal partners from around the world. By utilizing living-labs, city officials can reduce risks and costs while empowering their citizens to cocreate easy, simple and effective solutions for a more participatory process to think, create, share and nurture future cities.

CREATIVE STREET DESIGN Studio 5•5 // Paris, France

https://bit.ly/3hfdnJB The wave-themed street signage system is a visual reminder to continue adhering to social distancing guidelines as cities are starting to reopen and it can help to organize pedestrians and queue areas. It is both colorful and beautiful yet uniform so everyone can understand and recognize it. The theme is influenced by the historical and cultural identity that Parisians can relate to, the Coat of Arms of the city of Paris “paris blason” which is simply a ship on the water as well as the Paris Blason motto ‘fluctuat nec mergitur!’ which means ‘beaten by the waves, but not sunk!’ reminding people that this city has gone through a lot and together they can pass this storm.

STRADE APERTE PLAN Milan // Italy

www.theguardian.com/world Milan’s Strade Aperte Plan includes “low-cost temporary cycle lanes, new and widened pavements, reduced speed limits, and pedestrian and cyclist priority streets” as a strategy that many different cities are considering and implementing. It will increase space for pedestrians, cyclists and other nonmotorized means of transportation, while also reducing traffic congestions and positively impacting air pollution. Typically this involves redesigning the space available re-assigning roads and re-organizing how lanes are assigned. While allowing for social distancing, the re-organization also contributes to a reduction of air pollution.

The goal was to create an entirely “walkable” city with three centers that include retail, public services, and entertainment. This would allow for easy access to different areas of the city and limits use of vehicles, thus reducing emissions. The project also includes solar panels across the site providing a source of clean energy and creating a local energy network. Additionally, gardens in common spaces and rooftops create an opportunity for residents to grow and source their own food.

The Mobile PPS is a new pneumatic space that acts as fully separated treatment room for doctors or as office area. Made from Thermo Polyurethane (TPU) it looks like a transparent, over-pressurized bubble to guarantee airflow. Fighting against COVID-19, masks and protection suits may be in shortage and this room could serve as flexible protection.

https://bit.ly/37m98Y4

“Venn Room” utilizes virtual reality to scan the spaces we are in and fuse them with other users’ spaces meshing the two and giving the impression that we are physically together. This innovation takes video call to the next level as users within virtual reality can manipulate their shared space to do activities together rather than simply looking at them through the screen. The virtual combination of aspaces creates different concept of togetherness or common space. While social distancing may prevent people from being physically together, this innovation opens up new forms of social interaction.

CYCLOCLEAN

Nippon Basic Co. // Japan

https://bit.ly/3e1B8Ty Cycloclean is a bicycle that uses the kinetic energy from pedaling to purify the water. This bike is meant for third world countries, remote villages and disaster zones. The bike allows for quicker transit to water sources such as river, pond or lake water and its filtering. With the high threat of COVID-19 in third world countries due to lack of sanitation and close quarters, this bike allows users to purify the water they drink to slow/stop contamination from their water supplies. In third world countries water supply has been a big transmitter, this bike could potentially prevent a virus from devastating third world countries.

In response to the overwhelming number of people working from d uring the pand emic, Wood s Bagot proposes flexible homes to serve different needs over the course of the day. The Split Shift Home includes an entry porch to greet neighbors and a storage for bikes, coats, and shoes. There is a series of adjustable walls and screens to divide the open concept apartment into specified spaces such as home office, exercise, entertainment and bedrooms. The home would operate in three modes. The Day mode allows to form a home office, living and dining space. The Night mode creates a two bedrooms with screens for privacy and the Play mode allows for a wide open space for entertaining.

HEALTHCARE HEALTHCARE TALK #11

TALK #12

Andrea Burns, Director, Age Strong Boston, City of Boston

Ami Bowen, Director of Community Relations, Harbor Health Community Health Center

Anne-Catrin Schultz, Associate Professor, Architecture, Wentworth

In the FutureLab Talk #11 Andrea Burns [City of Boston] joined Anne-Catrin Schultz [Wentworth] to discuss building an age – friendly Boston. She shared initiatives such as intergenerational housing where graduate students and recent college graduates are matched to an affordable, multi-generational home. This initiative contributes to both parties having affordable housing and helps address some of the issues around isolation of elder populations. Although COVID-19 has exploited the issues that many communities face, it has challenged the community to accelerate work in making sure the aging adults of Boston are not shut out and left behind. Innovations in technology can still leave some behind which is why projects such as cooking classes and Boston Public School art exchange are critical to helping older adults maintain connections with their community.

Monique Fuchs, Associate Vice President, Innovation + Entrepreneurship, Wentworth

In the FutureLab Talk #12 Ami Bowen [Harbor Health] discusses with Monique Fuchs [Wentworth] the accessibility of community healthcare, social determinants of health, and the barriers preventing individuals from receiving proper and consistent healthcare. While COVID-19 has only highlighted disparities, Ami shares how telehealth is an alternative with limitations and how the future of care could look like on a local level. Harbor Health Community Health Center was the first of its kind in the nation considering a more holistic approach to health care and creating greater accessibility to health care services while giving greater consideration to barriers impacting overall well-being such as nutrition, transportation, affordable housing.

Repurposed shipping containers can serve as modular intensive care units. This shipping container infrastructure allows for a high level of flexibility, as well as making the project affordable, since these are inexpensive. Shipping containers give the opportunity to be installed anywhere and when not needed, can be taken away supporting flexibility without leaving marks behind. They can be stacked on top of each other with no structure needed, which makes these modular healthcare units expandable and scalable.

https://bit.ly/2YqINUH

The Berlin, Germany airport (in construction since 2006) is still an unused space, which could be utilized to support healthcare needs in light of COVID-19. The 6 feet apart rule is an inspiration for the modular layout of the hospital beds and personal rooms. By reusing existing infrastructure, we are able to fight the pandemic and use our existing resources in order to help those in need. The circular layout is adaptable to other buildings not in use during the pandemic such as schools, gyms, or even parking lots.

Noorahealth partners with hospitals to upskill healthcare workers to provide education to patients and their families about their family member’s care plan and health trajectory. Hospital waiting rooms are transformed into classrooms increasing the patient family’s confidence to care for their relatives once released from the hospital. Check-ins are administered as a follow up to assure the patient’s well-being and to answer any questions. In rural and underdeveloped areas this has been a strong support system to increase healing success in patients.

Underserved and high-risk communities have less access to healthcare and testing. Retrofitted school buses combined with mobile app access can provide a scalable and cost-effective solution for mobile testing. Mobile and accessible innovations are necessary in eliminating the disproportionate care underserved communities are experiencing. This not only provides a solution for testing in times of COVID-19 but could be adapted in the future for different uses to provide better healthcare services and much needed access to resources.

ISOLATION ON WHEELS Bangalore, India

https://cnn.it/3flZGH7 Since the global shutdown to control the spread of the virus, mass transit has become a thing of the past and left thousands of passenger trains in India completely idle. With minor repurposing, these trains are being transformed into mobile isolation wards. Each carriage offers up to 16 additional beds, nurses and doctors stations, as well as storage for medical supplies and equipment. This will reduce the strain on hospitals and easy to reproduce, these hospitals on wheels offer future opportunities for makeshift solutions and more flexible and accessible healthcare.

MOBILE TESTING STATIONS

M-Rad Architects + Trailer Made // Los Angeles, USA

https://bit.ly/2XUuAR2

These mobile testing stations will be situated in the most vulnerable neighborhoods that see an increase in positive cases in dense cities. Created with antimicrobial copper, this will help with selfsanitization and establishing a secure place to keep safe and clean for testing. Medical practitioners at the stations in LA will be taking swabs from patients using arm length rubber gloves through a Perspex divider to prevent any chance of cross-contamination. The mobile units could be repurposed to serve the homeless population in the form of shelter, medical and cleaning facilities, remote food delivery, blood donations, or vaccine delivery.

SKIP-CHECKOUT APP Fairway Markets, New York

https://bit.ly/2C0wbvZ Fairway Markets developed an app that makes shopping a more efficient and sanitary process. Instead of bringing the items to the front and having them processed by a cashier, there are codes to scan next to each food item. Once done with shopping, the customers scan a QR code at the exit, that activates the “checkout” allowing the shopper to pay for everything they purchased without going to a cashier. The grocery store changing Fairway Markets took several steps to promote this new service, offering training to the staff, adding servers, and making sure there were people to help customers sign up. Most stores in the city are experiencing a 10-15% use of the app with some seeing up to 20-30% usage.

AUGMENTED REALITY: KINECT FITTING-ROOM AR Door // Moscow, Russia

https://bit.ly/3cRb2Bf

Designing an augmented reality fitting room, this company made an easily accessible alternative for people wanting to try on clothes in the store. This machine does a full body scan of you and your surroundings when you step in front of it to try on clothes. You are then able to scroll through and virtually try on 3D clothes that the store is selling. As technology has advanced, AR fitting rooms have now moved to mobile cell phones making it even easier to shop anywhere you want. After Covid-19 hit, our shopping experience is likely never going to be the same. In store purchases have already decreased significantly.
