In a lavish evening of celebration, funds were also raised for charity partner, Facing The World. Executive Director of the charity Graham Banton, and patron Shari Royle, also said a few words and expressed their gratitude to The Belle Epoque. Graham exclaimed ‘As a charity, we are extremely grateful to The Belle Epoque for partnering with us for this event. The donation made along with the further awareness the event has created, will go far in helping us continue our work’. The venue now looks forward to the festive period – 40 and fabulous!

Last week, Take That star Gary Barlow took to Manchester to unveil his new album, with a fan signing in HMV on Market Street. The X-Factor judge said the city was his first destination of choice when planning his big solo album launch, “There’s always something special about coming back to Manchester, it always feels so warm and supportive, it’s where we’ve always done our longest concert runs, it’s always been like our greatest moments in Manchester. “So for me, Manchester was obviously the first place on my list for coming to launch the solo album too.” His album ‘Since I saw you last’ is available now from all good retailers. Yes, it’s happened again! One look in the mirror and OOOPs! What the ****!? That’s if you actually get to the mirror. How many times have we all struggled into that sexy pencil skirt or those perfect jeans (or they were a month ago!?) when you know that even without looking, your guilty pleasures have come back to haunt you. Oh yes, you feel as though you have post-Christmas poundage written all over your face, tummy, thighs and derrière! Early December, that little black dress hangs alluringly in the wardrobe and those super sexy killer heels wink out each morning as you shrug on your boring work clothes. The Christmas party season is about to descend and all your hard work at the gym and weeks of denial have paid off. Then, it starts with the office do, Xmas drinks with your mates, and the big day itself, giving you free reign to have fun all the way to the New Year. For the next couple of weeks, even popping round to a neighbours house to wish them “All the Best” culminates in the obligatory mince pie and mulled wine fest.

Indulging It just wouldn’t be Christmas without indulging in a little of what you fancy and we all admire those that can get through it without even loosening a button on their Christmas pants. In reality, though, “go on then, it is Christmas” has passed your lips almost as many times as mince pies, chocolate and turkey butties! Come New Years Day, there’s still the last of the chocolates, so if you finish the lot, you can start your diet on Monday.

Yes, that little four-letter word – DIET. Whether it instils morbid fear or triumphant glory, it’s something that’s as unavoidable as breathing come the second week in January. If, like many others, you find that you and your carefully chosen winter wardrobe are no longer living in perfect stylish harmony, there is a solution. It isn’t to throw all your clothes away or to stay indoors for a month with a bag over your head. You can always go on that diet. The Diet Industry makes millions out of our little insecurities and desire to lose weight. Whether you choose to cut down a little or go on a full-scale assault of the latest weight loss plan, shedding those extra pounds involves commitment, denial, hard work, more denial and sacrifice.

So many choices Do you choose low calorie or high carb, low fat or high fibre? What can I eat and when can I eat it. Also, more importantly what can’t I eat? Dieting really does make you appreciate food. It makes you appreciate the mouthwatering smell of someone else’s fry-up or the oozing deliciousness of a heavily laden cream-cake. You develop an almost canine-like ability to catch the tantalising aroma of every chip shop in the area and before you know it, you’re licking the windows of a French style patisserie, the police are dragging you away and its all on YouTube!

Ever since the Victorian notion that frailty was the key to spiritualism and femininity, the perfect shape, whatever that maybe, has been an aspiration to many. We’ve all heard of the popular weight loss programmes that are out there and they continue to change the lives of many, but imagine choosing to lose the pounds using a tapeworm or even existing on fresh air alone as the Breatherians do.

Diet by all means but why not just stop eating the chocs, pies, and desserts because they’re no longer under your nose and just maybe, your pre-Xmas figure will return without brainwashing, denial or loss of a body part.

There’s also the sleeping-beauty diet that involves just having a kip instead of food, which apparently Elvis was a fan of. There was a slimming soap which would magically lather away your bulges and even the cigarette diet whose slogan actually said “Light a Lucky and you’ll never miss sweets that make you fat” from 1925, when smoking was safe.

Protein Diets? There’s the Atkins Diet and the Paleo diet both of which recommend protein, protein and more protein. Similar, is the caveman diet, which insists that we all eat like our early ancestors, but not everyone has the time to hunt down bison for dinner between the 9 to 5 and actually having a life. These days, every Celebrity out there has their own, sometimes crazy, diet to sell. Browse through any magazine, turn on the tv or look online and you’ll find a vast array of diets to kick-start the new you but they all have one thing in common - will power. Those that succeed in reaching their goal weight or even losing those Xmas pounds, can give themselves a hefty pat on the back for having the stamina required to see it through. But when you actually think about it, none of these wonder diets say the obvious about losing the Christmas pounds – its no longer the festive season so once the last of the goodies have gone, do you replace them with more?

Remember though, the perfect body should not be your only goal and neither is it the secret of life, no matter what time of the year it is. What you should aim for are good times, laughter and festive cheer with family and friends over the party season. Go ahead, have a fab Xmas, and when it comes to the New Year, there is one consolation. Those few extra pounds will keep you warm in January then once the weather gets warmer, you can start thinking about that all time summer favourite – The Bikini Diet. Late ‘90s and early 00’s pop sensations 5ive (now four), Atomic Kitten and B*Witched will take to the stage along with other acts following the huge success of the reality-documentary show that premiered at the end of January this year. It documented the reunion of some of the biggest names of the ‘90s pop music scene including 911, Honeyz and Liberty X, and the two weeks of rehearsals which preceded the one date concert at London’s Hammersmith Apollo in February this year. However, the show was so successful that the Hammersmith Apollo concert, which only seated 3,000 people, sold out in just five minutes after the show’s premier on January 31st. The final episode of The Big Reunion aired on March 28th this year to over 1 million viewers, claiming 974,000 at 9pm, and a further 246,000 on ITV2+1. This led to what can only be described as snowball success and in February a full arena tour of 12 shows was announced, taking the pop superstars on a whirlwind nationwide trip around the UK, with further dates added due to popularity and high demand. Over 100,000 tickets were sold for the tour, which travelled to 14 cities and played to audiences of up to 15,000 people. The Christmas gigs, announced in March, were again a huge success like The Big Reunion Tour, and three extra dates had to be added, which went on sale in April, bringing the total to seven shows at five venues, including two matinees at the O2 London and Manchester’s own Phones 4u Arena. The festive gigs kick off on December 11th in Nottingham and move on to Birmingham, Sheffield, and London before coming to Manchester on the 15th for the last leg, just in time to contend for the ever-illustrious Christmas number one.

The stars of The Big Reunion are joining forces to fight for the Christmas top spot with the well-known anthem I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday, by Wizzard, and bookies have the song pegged at 7-1 against The X Factor winner’s single at 11-8, and Lily Allen’s cover version of Keane’s Somewhere Only We Know at 11-2.

Blue It was only revealed back in February that Blue were to join The Big Reunion Tour to perform alongside the other six acts. The band said “This sounded like a lot of fun, giving us the perfect chance to perform together again in the UK”. But sadly for many women, Blue will not be rejoining The Big Reunion for the Christmas shows; as the band re-formed back in 2011 prior to the ITV2 show, and already have their own headline comeback tour which began back in October.

Drama The ITV2 show was not without its dramas, with band 5ive re-forming ironically with just four members, minus J Brown who was criticised on the show for what ‘band mates’ called bullying and aggressive behavior when they were still together from 1997-2001. Brown returned to TV screens for The Big Reunion Tour in September when he hit back at accusations about his behavior, admitting to suffering from chronic insomnia and depression, which reached a climax when he tried to commit suicide . Girl band Atomic Kitten also have some drama of their own to cope with, as band member Kerry Katona is expecting her fifth child and will be six months pregnant when they take to the stage this month. Whatever the outcome of the live tour, it seems that ITV will be happy no matter what, with two contenders for Christmas number one: The X Factor winner and The Big Reunion acts will be competing against the likes of ACDC, and Susan Boyle and Elvis for their place at the top of the charts this Christmas.

The lights are on and the town hall Santa is back – and the Christmas markets have thrown open their shutters for another year. This year, the market – Britain’s biggest, stretches from Albert Square all the way to Corporation Street for the first time, with 300 stalls taking in seasonal treats and cuisines from all over the continent. King Street has also been enjoying a touch of Gallic charm with a string of stalls devoted to French produce, while Exchange Street hosts a range of arts and crafts. Exchange Square has seen even more stalls than in previous years, while its Christmas vintage lounge hosts a tearoom, cocktail bar and microbrewery, plus live music. But the centrepiece has to be Albert Square’s magical main market, including – for the first time ever – a two-storey beer hall. Visitors, this year, have also been able to buy special Christmas coins – either to exchange for a tasty treat or keep as a souvenir. Councillor Pat Karney, Manchester’s city centre spokesman, said: “The gluhwein is flowing and the bratwurst are sizzling!” “The jewel in Manchester’s Christmas crown – the award winning, original, biggest and best markets in the UK are looking brilliant as ever!” “Bigger, better and with more choice than ever before, we have the country’s first ever two storey beer hall in Albert Square – with superb views across the market – as well as the first ever Christmas currency – the shining shillings celebrating 15 magical years of the world famous Manchester Christmas markets.” The famous markets are open in the city centre until December 22nd and are expected to draw thousands of festive visitors. The main town hall site - pictured from the town hall clock tower here - alone regularly draws upwards of 1.5m people – with some 7m flocking to the city’s markets as a whole. Situated on Warburton Street in Didsbury is Cibo. A back-to-basics restaurant serving rustic Northern Italian cuisines that are simply delicious! It’s the perfect place to visit if you’re already suffering from those dreaded Winter Blues. This quirky barnyard-style building looks extremely inviting inside and out. There’s a pretty wood burner to dine beside and a spirally staircase leading up to the ‘attic’ where guests can dine under a wooden beamed ceiling. We were given two options with our menu; a selection of smaller dishes to share between us so we could try a bit of everything or a three-course meal each… But what Italian shares food? That’s right, we guzzled down three tasty authentic courses! Four if you include the fresh doughy bread with olives we were greeted with at the start.

Faultless To begin with, we ordered the San Danielle Ham, Vine Tomato with Burrata Cheese and the Spicy Neapolitan Sausage on Spinach. We would highly recommend both dishes, although the Burrata Cheese definitely prevailed out of the two with its creamy taste and that melt-in-your-mouth texture. Red Wine from the bar? Oh go on then!

For our mains we ordered the Fillet Steak with Rocket, Parmesan and Aged Balsamic with a side of Fries and also the Gnocchi with Wild Boar Ragu – just like mamma used to make it! Both dishes were faultless; the Steak was extremely tender and cooked to perfection, the Gnocchi we’re still drooling over - a truly Italian dish that really gets the taste buds going. Choosing from the Desserts Menu was a tricky task when there’s a range to choose from. In fact, we are now beginning to wonder whether or not the Desserts could have been ordered in the Tapas way… Why didn’t think we of that sooner! The Blueberry Cheesecake was lovely and rich nonetheless and had been drizzled in a sweet satisfying raspberry sauce. We also had no choice but to share the Cheese Board due to it’s large size, mm baked Camembert! Dining at Cibo was a very unique atmospheric experience and we’ll be sure to return. If quality and elegance is your thing, then we’re confident you’ll enjoy yourself as much as we did. And when you do visit be sure to tell ‘em we sent you... Capisce?

Not many people know this, but many years ago Didsbury used to be classed as Lancashire rather than the Manchester suburb we now know it as. An area built on immigration from the late 18th century. Initially European immigrants settled mainly in the suburbs to the north of the city, but from the 1890s onwards, many of them moved to what were seen as the more “sophisticated” suburbs in the south. Today there is still a journey of “sophistication” that happens as people move to Manchester as students, make the journey to young professionals, have families and move a few years later to Didsbury to settle. Despite this continual journey compared to other local towns, Didsbury is relatively small with a population of around 15,000 people. So what of the Didsbury of today? What makes it unique? Didsbury, and in particular West Didsbury and Burton Road, has become a destination for those that want a bustling atmosphere and wide choice of restaurants. Older restaurateurs will talk of the days when there were only a handful of restaurants on Burton Road and yet the growth has been organic and seems very fitting. Undoubtedly it is an area only 2nd to the Curry Mile as the highest density of restaurants in Manchester and what Didsbury offers is variety. HSH has been involved in both the Burton Road and Barlow Moor Road expanse of restaurants for the past few years. On Burton Road, Harvey Silver Hodgkinson have sold businesses such as the traditional fish and chips shops ëFish Baití (formerly Frankies Fish Bar) to Rhubarb Restaurant, the only restaurant in West Didsbury to be included in the Michelin Guide, and has been listed for five consecutive years. For Japanese food lovers we sold Sakura House and those who are looking for a Craft Beer, recently opened Mary & Archie was purchased through Harvey Silver Hodgkinson & it has the finest selection of craft beer in Didsbury. Not to be outdone, the businesses we have sold on Barlow Moor Road include The Art Of Tea, Didsbury’s independent cafe bar serving fresh, locally sourced produce, loose leaf tea, specialty wines & beers; and Sansou, a deli and juice bar for breakfast and lunch. Perfect for commuters. Well served by public transport from the City Centre, the recent addition of the Metrolink to Didsbury has made the town even more accessible. But as one hand gives, the other takes away and speaking to local businesses the large amount of road works on Burton Road has been incredibly difficult for traders.

Earlier this year, when the days were a bit longer and the nights a little bit shorter and we were looking forward to throwing off our woollies for something more spring-like, Didsbury Lounge appeared. With an elegant glass frontage, delightful vintage styled décor and a skylight that makes even the most miserable day light and airy, the venue has been charming the Didsbury residents and those of us from further afield – who see it as a breath of fresh air. Who can blame them? The staff are charming, the venue is full of clean lines and gives a sense of air and space, but without being harsh – the white is softened by muted tones of grey and green and if the light fitting in the front of the venue doesn’t catch your eye, then the retro beauty of the fireplace should. Then there are the drinks on offer – from tea and coffee through to an excellent wine list with many of the more expensive bottles available by the glass. Ideal if you fancy something with lunch or if you want to try something new, without buying the whole bottle. And still there’s more, as the weekend brings the real party – For those of us who love our spirits, there’s an excellent alongside live music, it’s two Mojitos for £10 on Fridays and on selection behind the bar (happily some of the staff love their gin Saturdays comes the ‘Prosecco outreach programme’ – one as much as I do), and the cocktail menu is something lovely. magnum (yes, I said magnum) of Prosecco for £25. If those didn’t tempt you, then some of their special offers might. There are free coffee top ups Monday to Thursday, so you have an excuse to stay longer with that piece of cake you had while you worked on your laptop. And with free

Personally, I have come to the conclusion that every single resolution I have set myself previously has been in vain because I can’t tame myself. Yes, I might have the occasional glass too many of wine, yes, after the extra glass I might enjoy an occasional cigarette, then a pizza... and chips, and then another glass of wine, and spend the next day rugged up under a duvet. And yes, I know it’s not good for my health, but it sure is for my happiness! Conventionally, New Year is associated with celebration and reinvention. The traditions are said to have derived from the time of the Romans, who begun each year by making promises to the God Janus, whom the month of January was named after. The times have progressed to facilitate what we now associate with a great celebrational farewell to leave the last year behind and start fresh the following day; with a New Year and a New You. Once each January 1st rings in, all those mistakes, all the hard feelings and all that you’d rather forget seems suddenly manageable; the past is left behind and with it are its memories. The beginning of the year is like embarking on a voyage of new ventures to improve our lives. New Year’s Resolutions, to me, are the act of setting your-self an unachievable goal at the last minute, which really, you know you’re going to fail at. The most popular of resolves are in and around the directions of losing weight, drinking less, stopping smoking, exercising more, saving money and anything, it seems, which restricts us from being the person which we’ve inevitably, and possibly, self-disappointingly become. Why with this infinite opportunity to better ourselves do we predominantly decide to set resolutions which inhibit who we are? As soon as Christmas Day arrives, the Boxing Day binge is thrust at us from all directions right the way through January and all we hear is how it’s time to lose weight, drink less, exercise more and look better. You have to look at the reason behind why you want to change something about yourself, rather than the goal itself. If you want to feel better about the way that you look, what exactly is it that is making you feel bad in the first place? If you want to save money, what is it that you’re saving for? Going in to the New Year, with a strong sense of who you are and for what exact reason you want to make a change is the only way you’re going to stick to it throughout the year and for the rest of your life!

These now not so secret guilty pleasures are all things I have declared war against come the New Year’s of 2013, 2012 and really, dating all the way back to the noughties... I clearly am not successful in attempting to curb these bad habits of mine, which I have come to believe to be a genetic malfunction, because honestly I don’t want to!

This year This year is going to be different. I am going to make progressive and positive affirmations that will enrich my life, not corset it. I think it’s better to delve a little deeper than surface matters to obtain optimum objectives for the approaching New Year and thus New You. My resolution this year is going to be to make time. See old friends more, visit my family, stop longer for strangers, Skype the abroad folk and dedicate at least a day a month to charitable work. I want to look outwards at how I can affect others because it is easy to forget that helping people helps you too. Happiness is contagious... they do say there is no such thing as a selfless good deed.

Do it for you! Whatever you decide to do to reinvent yourself this New Year, make sure you are really doing it for you; and that you can validate the reasons why with the final result in mind. Keeping a photo or an article in the mirror of what you desire is a failsafe way in which to keep strong daily about why you started your resolution in the first place. Reinventing yourself shouldn’t be about restrictions, rather broadening your horizons. So, before the clock strikes midnight, have a think about the things you want to leave behind this past year and why that is. You are about to embark on the journey of your making, so turn a few different directions, make a lot of unique pit-stops and select your passengers wisely. This is the New Year and the New You is entirely of your making!

Help For Heroes is a UK based charity, which offers practical, direct support for service persons, and veterans who have suffered life-changing injuries in service. Michelle said: “I am humbled to be able to “do my bit” to support the incredible work of Help for Heroes. An estate agent who was pestered for sex for three years by her ‘obsessed’ married boss has spoken of her nightmare ordeal. Faye Blenkinsopp, 34, was subjected to sexual taunts, verbal abuse and dozens of texts and calls in the early hours from 46-year-old boss John Passmore, from Didsbury.

“He would tell me that we should ‘dance on rainbows together’, make comments that suggested he knew my movements and was jealous of every man I spoke to.”

Dad-of-one Passmore even told staff he had built a replica of her desk in his garden shed, and said he would perform sex acts on it. Disgraced Passmore, who ran city centre letting agencies Apartments of Manchester and Manchester Homes has now been warned by a judge that if he goes near Miss Blenkinsopp again he will go to jail. After years of suffering in silence, Miss Blenkinsopp who lives in the city centre, finally plucked up the courage to tell police last summer, and Passmore was arrested and prosecuted.

Miss Blenkinsopp added: “He was furious when I began seeing a man involved with the liquidation of the company. At times he would text me through the night into the next morning. He would ring me in the middle night crying, sometimes screaming aggressively down the phone, saying ‘why won’t you be with me?’ If I didn’t pick up he would cut off my phone, which was supplied by the company.

Speaking after Passmore finally faced justice at Manchester Crown Court, Miss Blenkinsopp, a former airline stewardess, told the M.E.N. she feared the abusive campaign would never end.

“I’m obsessed with you” She said: “I started at the company in 2009, and John, who saw himself as a ‘controversial’ type of boss, would often make suggestive comments. I never encouraged him in any way and thought I could handle it. But, one night after an office party, we shared a taxi. I thought I would be safe – but next thing John put his head in my lap and told me ‘I’m obsessed by you.’

Faye Blenkinsopp, 34, was subjected to sexual taunts, verbal abuse and dozens of texts and calls in the early hours

“From then he began pestering me to have sex with him. The lewd comments got worse and at times they were quite sinister and bizarre. He told me that he liked to act out a ‘puppet show’, which involved two cushions, which were supposed to represent him, and me a hammer and can of CS gas.

The harassment continued through her employment at the letting agency company, up until the firm folded in 2012.

I thought it would get worse! “I didn’t report it because I just didn’t think anyone would take me seriously. I thought I would render myself jobless and that the harassment would get worse, because he wouldn’t have to be professional at all then. I worried I would become unemployable. “Last summer, as the business was collapsing, I finally left the company and told the police. It was such a relief to be taken seriously – they were amazing. Passmore, who was living in Didsbury at the time of the offences, went on to plead guilty to charges of harassment, possessing cannabis and possessing a CS gas canister. But he was spared jail after John Kennerley, defending, told the court his wife had returned to Thailand, leaving him sole carer for their five-year-old daughter. Sentencing him to a 10-week jail sentence, suspended for a year, with 120 hours unpaid work, Judge Martin Steiger QC said Passmore’s ‘appalling’ behaviour had had a ‘significant and deleterious effect’ on the victim. A restraining order bars him going near Miss Blenkinsopp for three years.

Once the hustle and bustle of Christmas has come to and end, the crackers have been pulled and there’s not enough turkey left to make a single butty, it can mean only one thing - New Year has arrived. For many of us this also means that our magical time at home eating too much and doing very little has come to an end, as we contemplate returning to work and school after a restful Christmas break. The mix of cold, dreary weather, lack of sleep, too much food and lashings of alcohol usually leave me feeling rather fed-up and with a bad case of January blues. The days are short and dull, it’s cold and grey, summer seems a lifetime away…on top that, the school run turns into an adventure of epic proportions as I attempt to get the youngest two into school on time, whilst battling the elements and chipping ice off the car. Sometimes something as simple as enjoying a cup of tea with an old friend or seeing a beautiful sunrise on the way to work can lift the soul and I always try to look for the positives, however hidden they may be. Over the years I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s best to embrace January and the inevitable return to work it brings, well maybe not embrace, but try to make the most of the fresh start the new year can offer. Here are my hints and tips to help you banish the January blues….

Plan a trip. In an ideal world I would welcome the New Year from a tropical beach somewhere hot and sunny. In reality I will be in Sale with the kids as we prepare to return to the grind of school n work. If it’s possible, try and plan a trip away, nothing like a little sun for banishing the blues. If this isn’t practical, maybe book something for later in the year – something to look forward to is always good and if, like me, you will not be taking a trip anywhere this year, you can always spend an hour looking at beaches on the laptop whilst sipping cocktails in your bikini - just don’t forget to turn the heating up first

Make ‘Fun-Friendly’ Resolutions. January is also known as the time of year where most people are trying to save money, eat better, exercise more and work harder. To me this translates as No one wants to have fun. This year my resolutions will include: Eating jelly at least once a week, (day to be confirmed), trying out three new hair colours every month and attempting to overcome my fear of heights by doing a sponsored bungee jump…much more fun than saving n overtime

and also uses up some of the masses of newspaper I seem to be stockpiling, much to the hubby’s relief … Better still, the kids can get involved - we have created some rather unusual object d’art and even my boys can concentrate long enough to get a small piece finished in an afternoon.

Have a lie down… Strange but true, Health expert Fiona Slatter says that by simply lying on the floor with your legs slightly raised, you can boost energy levels because it calms the body and opens up your energy channels. Based on Traditional Chinese Medicine, this exercise relaxes both the lower and upper back which then, in turn, opens the stomach meridian or energy channel. Fiona also points out that this exercise is best carried out first thing in the morning, when you first wake up. Well, personally I’m not sure about the science behind it all but any exercise that involves me lying down in the morning has got to be worth a go.

Don’t forget to smile When you laugh or smile your brain releases little chemical messages known as endorphins. This ‘feel-good’ message is actually potent enough to remove physical and emotional pain from your body. Travelling down the spine and then throughout the body, they create a feeling of well being as they go. One thing worth mentioning is that, unlike your friends n family, endorphins do not recognize a fake smile from a real one, meaning that if you pretend you are happy, you could actually end up feeling really happy – how cool is that? Go ahead and give it a try, it works for me – in fact it seems to be contagious, the more people I smile at, the happier I feel. Getting the kids back into the swing of early mornings and long school days come January is always a bit of a struggle. Seems they are just as susceptible to feeling winter blues as we grown-ups are and I have even got a plan of action to kick-start them too: I am going to give them ‘practice-run week’. This means that they go to bed early (bonus for me) and get up early and will, hopefully, mean that by the time school does reopen in January we have half a chance of actually being on time. If I’m lucky it also means I will get away with sandwiches for lunch….

Get a hobby. Last year I decided to have a crack at Deco-patch, mostly because I felt left out of what had become a mini-craft-craze and also because it looks easy. My mum is extremely talented with all things craft related and over the years she has created embroidered pillowcases, macramé hanging baskets and countless tapestries. Sadly I have not inherited her skill, or patience. I did attempt the ancient art of cross-stitching once but lost both my sanity and colour chart before I even completed a row. Deco-patch is perfect for me, it comes together quickly, requires minimal thought – allowing my mind to wander freely

There can be few people who don’t know the story of War Horse, the classic Michael Morpurgo novel that became a hit movie for Hollywood director Steven Spielberg. But while the straightforward plot of the love and loyalty between a boy and his horse set in the First World War springs few surprises, people are still flocking to see the mesmerising and hugely successful stage version, which is touring across the world. The reason has to be that the execution of the play highlights all that is truly wonderful about human endeavour – an uplifting tale told through terrific acting, to stirring folk music and with perfect technical accomplishment by puppeteers – while its subject matter is about the most terrible aspect of humanity - war. It is the story of Albert Narracott – played with brilliant innocence by Lee Armstrong – and his horse Joey, which is taken by the army to serve in the war and has harrowing adventures in the killing fields of France, before Albert himself takes the journey across The Channel to serve and search for him.

Multi award-winning Many of the plaudits for the multi award-winning National Theatre production rightly focus on the jaw-dropping mechanical horses, made and manoeuvred by Handspring Puppet Company.

The full-size steeds, made of cable, leather and steel, come alive with the movements and expert choreography of their handlers – the twitch of an ear or shudder of mane, the only thing they don’t do is sweat – and this contact emphasises the historic bond between human and horse.

Compelling But other aspects of the production are equally compelling. The lighting and simple set vividly conjure up the mud of a Devon field or Somme trench – and the folksongs by Derbyshire’s John Tams – sung with heart by Bob Fox – are the essence of England. This is an ensemble work, with Armstrong and the horses shining. As they should for Morpurgo and his adapter for stage, Nick Stafford, know people, especially children, understand suffering to a greater degree when animals are involved. That is why, especially as we move into the 100th anniversary year of the outbreak of the conflict, there was hardly a dry eye in the house at the end. War Horse has the longest run of any play ever to appear at The Lowry. Gallop to see it. This is a thoroughbred production and one of the best theatrical experiences you will ever have the pleasure – and pain – to experience. By Paul Ogden
