There is many reasons we all love Summer. Some enjoy the outdoor bars, others love to relax catching the rays, while being nose deep in a novel. But another simple, yet great activity in the summer are bike rides. In Manchester/Cheshire there are some great little routes for a bike ride, including Dunham Massey and a personal favourite of ours, Alderley Edge. Perfect for a family day out and you can find

some real hidden gems during the day. Things you may not have noticed while driving in the car. But a great boost is the affect it can have on your health. Just a simple bike ride 2-3 times a week will definitely have you feeling more fresh this summer.

This delicate luxury, available individually, in paper cones or part of a gift box, makes a sumptuous summer treat. Godiva Chocolatier is situated in Selfridges Food Hall, Trafford Centre, Manchester

Manchester girl, Michelle Keegan, has announced her fashion debut with a line for Lipsy. The former Coronation Street star has become brand ambassador for the high street retailer, with Michelle’s ultra glamorous style fitting in seamlessly with Lipsy’s aesthetic.

“I have been wearing Lipsy since my teens,” Michelle said. “I have always admired their collections over the years; their pieces are always bang on trend, are made with good quality materials and I always feel great when I wear Lipsy.

Chelsea has joined the cast of Casualty! She begins filming her new role in Wales this week as a recurring character Healey, from Salford, will play Honey Wright, the emergency department’s

new tea lady in the upcoming series. Honey is billed as having “big hair and a big personality”, and regularly gives tarot readings and aura interpretations to staff and patients. She is also said to have a big secret upon her arrival. The Strictly Come Dancing finalist will make her debut in episode six of series 29, which screens in October. Executive Producer Oliver Kent said: “I’m delighted that Chelsee has agreed to bring her unique combination of bounce and style to the Emergency Department. “Honey Wright is like no other character we’ve ever featured in Casualty and I can’t wait for the audience to see her and her tea trolley in action.”

The actress - who has appeared as Katy Armstrong since 2010 - will leave Weatherfield at the end of the year.

The 23-year-old insisted that the news had given her the energy to look for new challenges.

Producer Stuart Blackburn confirmed that the character will not be killed off, suggesting that Foote could return to the soap in the future.

She said: “If anything, it’s given me that kick I needed to move on to other things.”

He said: “Georgia is a talented actress who has been a great asset to the show. The decision to write out the character of Katy Armstrong is based on storyline discussions and will be one of the consequences of the current drama involving the Windass/Armstrong clan.

“Katy will not be killed off and the door will be left open for a possible return. We wish Georgia every success with her future career.” Georgia May Foote revealed that she was less than pleased at finding out she was being axed from ‘Coronation Street’, comparing being written out of the soap to being dumped. During a chat with The Mirror, Georgia explained that she was upset that waving goodbye to the cobbles wasn’t her decision, telling the paper: “I was a bit gutted that leaving ‘Corrie’ wasn’t my decision - it’s like a boyfriend dumping you first - but I’m really excited.” The actress joined the Weatherfield drama in July 2010 and has also appeared in Grange Hill and This Is England.

Georgia, originally from Bury, said that she is looking forward to filming her exit scenes and is keen to try out new roles. “Having worked on other dramas such as Grange Hill and This Is England before I joined the cast, I always knew that I would want to try other roles again in the future.

“I am hugely grateful for the opportunities Coronation Street has given me and I am very excited about my exit storyline.” The actress also said she was pleasantly surprised to be nominated for sexiest female at the British Soap Awards, earlier last month, alongside EastEnders’ Jacqueline Jossa, and Hollyoaks actresses Jorgie Porter and Jennifer Metcalfe. “I’m so flattered by my nomination - but I wouldn’t have put myself up for that award, so it was a complete surprise,” she said. Co-star Michelle Keegan won the award for the sixth year running. However, with this being her curtain call at Coronation Street, it will be interesting to see who wins in 2015.

The fitness fanatic showed shoppers at the intu Trafford Centre just what is required to look as enviably slim as she does - hula-hooping And as part of her latest venture, the former TOWIE star took to Manchester to run a mini Bootycamp session live with fans. With her very own pink stage at the Trafford Centre, the 22-year-old demonstrated her hooping skills along with a few planks and press-ups to help get us summer fit. Pulling all sorts of poses, it really is no wonder why she’s got those super tight abs and thighs. Keeping things girly, the Essex beauty donned a classic pair of black leggings with a bright pink vest top to highlight her slim frame. With her new short locks pulled back off her face, this reality star encouraged the eager crowds to partake in her mini exercise regime. And as if that wasn’t enough fitness madness for one day, Lucy also officially launched her Mecktone product nationwide in Superdrug stores.

Since quitting TOWIE to get away from cheating slimeball Mario Falcone, Lucy has launched herself as a fitness guru! Despite the fact she was set to work up a sweat, Lucy still had a full face of make-up and her hair was styled in the same fashion she wore earlier in the day. Ahead of the session Lucy was seen launching her product Meck Tone in Superdrug in the store, for which she wore a tiny pink lacy crop top that revealed her toned abs. Lucy teamed the top with a full skirt featuring a stripy and floral pattern, which fell just below her knees. In keeping with the demure feel of the skirt she wore her hair off her face, in a half up do with plenty of volume. We look forward to welcoming you back soon, Lucy!

Samantha Faiers is widely regarded as a style icon – from her outfits on TOWIE to her regular red carpet public appearances. In addition to her own fashion store ‘Minnie’s Boutique’ Samantha’s interest in fashion has led to the creation of her new debut fragrance ‘La Bella’. Samantha has been involved along every step of the way with the conceptualisation and development of La Bella – creating the fragrance as a complementary layer to any outfit and featuring one of Samantha’s favourite scents; vanilla, along with packaging featuring her signature and hand drawn heart. ‘La Bella’ is a sweet and sophisticated fragrance with an addictive mix of delicious vanilla as a top note, elegant iris flower and benzoin at the heart, with a bed of glamorous musk laced with a luscious caramel in the base notes.

Samantha has enjoyed every element of creating La Bella, she comments: “I didn’t want to simply put my name to something, like a lot of celebrities do, that’s not the direction I want to go. The development team has been amazing - letting me lead the way, and we’ve created my ultimate fragrance. I’ve been wearing the samples and have had so many compliments. This is such an exciting venture for me and I can’t wait to share the fragrance with my fans!” The package is brought together in a sophisticated heavyweight bottle designed to add a touch of glamour to the dressing table with it’s diamond cut top, wrapped in a textured cream and gold package.

The ear-splitting explosion came first, seconds before the shattered glass began to rain down on terrified shoppers on the busy city streets. The sound of fire engines racing across the devastated streets entwined with the screech of burglar alarms as they wailed in protest; a noise that would continue for days, long after the dust had settled and the cleanup had begun. It was a Saturday in June 1996, the day before Fathers Day and Manchester was buzzing. Thousands had taken to the streets to enjoy the sunshine; many were looking forward to the match that afternoon, when England would play Scotland at Wembley, in the Euro 96 football championship. Manchester was hosting games in another group and the mood was both cheerful

and upbeat. As a gesture of friendship to visiting fans, the Manchester Evening News had placed billboards saying ‘Welcome to Manchester’ in four different languages and the city was alive with people from all over the world. Unbeknown to them, IRA bombers had parked a Ford box van containing 3,300lbs of home made explosives on Corporation Street, outside Marks and Spencer, on double yellow lines, hazard lights flashing. Within a few minutes an unsuspecting traffic warden slapped a ticket on the windscreen as the driver and his passenger walked away towards Cateaton Street, hoods up and sunglasses on. A phone call was then made from the Piccadilly area to an IRA member in Ireland – giving a signal that everything was in place. The two men then left the city in a

burgundy Ford Granada, later abandoned in Preston. Just before 10am, a call was received at Granada Television; it was from the IRA who warned them of the bomb in a coded message. Special Branch confirmed this was a genuine threat and minutes later the evacuation of 80,000 people from the city centre kicked into action. By 11.10am the police cordon was a quarter of a mile around the van - the amazing effort to clear the streets would mean that no one would die from the bomb, the biggest seen in peacetime mainland Britain. The Army’s bomb squad arrived from Liverpool, sending in a robot to break through the van’s window in an attempt to locate and destroy the timer on the passenger seat –instead it triggered the explosion.

Within | 11

They were just seconds from making the bomb safe. Barely a window survived in a half-mile radius of the blast and buildings a mile away were damaged. A crater measuring 15ft-wide was left where the van had been parked and Greater Manchester’s hospitals were flooded with casualties. Marks and Spencer, being closest to the bomb, was destroyed beyond repair and other notable buildings were badly damaged too. It was the day Manchester was to change forever. The damage was extreme and far reaching. Longridge House, home to Royal Insurance was to be demolished and the Arndale bus station, underneath the shopping centre, would never open again. The Corn Exchange was totally wrecked and although the Royal Exchange Theatre looked like it had escaped the worst, it was later discovered that the bomb had literally raised the roof, putting it back down almost 2inches askew.

Investigation The police investigation was headed by Detective Superintendent Bernard Rees and based at Longsight station and they liaised with the head of Special Branch in Manchester. The inquiry was called Operation Cannon, after Cannon Street - close to where the van had parked that terrible day. With the incident room in full swing, priority was given to tracing the Ford Cargo’s history. The registration plate was A214 ACL and, according to the Police National Computer, the van belonged to a man down south, who then told police he’d sold it to a dealer, Arthur Loveridge, who lived in Peterborough. Detectives went to investigate while others checked motorway traffic cameras, in an attempt to pick up the van’s journey into Manchester. They discovered it was driven to London the day before the bomb and had been picked up by camera on the M1. This link with the capital would become significant as the investigation progressed. That same evening the van had headed north, accompanied by the Ford Granada that was used as the getaway vehicle. After an appeal for information and some detective work, police discovered telephone traffic between the home of a prime suspect in Ulster and a telephone on the mainland around the time of the bomb, while another call was placed to an IRA ‘quartermaster’ from Manchester just three minutes after the van holding the bomb was parked on June 15. Police built up a picture of events that day,

12 | Within

as well as confirming the prime suspects.

So why weren’t they arrested? CPS said they did not believe there was a realistic chance of securing a conviction on the evidence available and, that if the suspect was charged his defence would point out the fact he had been to Manchester after the bomb and, despite the fact that police knew he was in the city, they let him go. In fact, the only people ever arrested in connection with the bomb were Steve Panter, crime reporter at the MEN who named the suspect, and DCI Gordon Mutch, a senior police officer who faced a harrowing ordeal, accused of leaking confidential information to Steve. Make of that what you will… Steve said that during the summer of 1998 he received a series of anonymous phone calls from a knowledgeable source, offering information about the Manchester bomb. He says that the police had identified suspects in the bombing of ’96 and were not going to arrest any of them for questioning. There was suspicion amongst some of the police connected to the inquiry that politics were involved, and the decision to lock away the investigation file stamped “No Action” was partly to prevent upsetting Northern Ireland, where the plans to get the peace process were finally back on track.

18 Years Later After the bomb Manchester was dramatically rejuvenated in a citywide renaissance that today generates millions of pounds in revenue. The modern day skyline is very different than before. From the glass icon that is Urbis to the breathtaking Beetham Tower, the flair and passion put into the redesign are clear to see. Ian Simpson is a Manchester lad, and architect – it’s him we have to thank for many of the buildings we see in our contemporary city.

No doubt pressure was added to the post-bomb development, the Trafford Centre was due to open in 1998 - at a cost of £600 million. The new design had to be modern, and break down the barriers that existed between the wealthy centre and the ‘poor’ areas to the North. Market Street was where these two worlds merged but there was still the physical barrier of buildings to overcome. Pre-bomb, The Printworks, then Maxwell House, was empty and abandoned, Urbis was just a car park and there was nothing but wasteland around the Cathedral.

Manchester city centre today is a thriving, cosmopolitan place to be – full of energy, excitement and pride. In 1995 just 300 people lived in the city, today that figure is over 20,000 and growing. Some people say that without the bomb Manchester could have suffered the same fate as Sheffield, whose city centre was hit by the challenge of out-of-town shopping malls. Others disagree with this, pointing out that Leeds and other areas have regenerated perfectly well without a bomb ever being involved. I’m sure the people caught there that day won’t ever see it as a positive event at all. For me it was a very dark day in my home city, but also one that helped to focus minds on how Manchester could be improved; a tragic catalyst that sparked long overdue change. Down but never out indeed…

Us humanfolk are prone to a bit of mild hibernation during the winter months; rugging up in jumpers, snuggling next to fires, guzzling mulled wine and gorging on carbs, Winter is a honey trap for idleness and battlefield of the SADs - also known as Seasonal Affective Disorder. Many a psychology study has proved that the lack of sunlight through the winter months affects our mood, predominantly due to the imbalance of our brain’s chemicals melatonin and serotonin. Melatonin promotes drowsiness, which in darker months, is bountiful; while Serotonin affects mood, appetite and also sleeping patterns. A lack of sunlight can increase appetite, decrease energy and induce depression in more severe cases. We need the sun, just like the plant-types do...

Basic Instinct As we can’t much control the weather and the planet’s orbit, most of the year in Britain is spent not feeling quite as good as we could when we are engulfed by the sun’s glorious rays... Imagine the population’s delight as a whole, when the sun actually comes out and it is actually warm enough to take your jumper off! All of a sudden our place of home is transformed into somewhere exotic, and foreign where people are suddenly, happy! The rose-tinted glasses of the sun’s rays produce a haze that not only changes the way we see things, but the way that we feel them. Everybody changes, our attitude, our inhibitions and even our looks. We morph back into Homo sapiens where Beer good. Sun nice. Work bad. Grrr. The change in light and warmth has a profound effect on the Biology throughout the entirety of our world, it’s almost impossible not to react to that, and much more fun to!

Shed your Winter skin Primitive urges are thrust to the forefront of our minds; we forego what we are meant to do and strive for whatever it is that we want to do! The animal from within is released... We become more body conscious due to the necessity to wear smaller items of clothing. Craving to look better through the wanton desire of sex appeal as summer increases the libido don’t you know! Women become obsessed with the ‘bikini body’ and whatever pathetic fad diets are the fashion of the moment. I would know, as I just spent two days eating raw only and suffering with starvation and a sour mood to-boot, only to follow it through on day three with a couple of glasses of wine and a six packets of crisps in a beer garden. I’m not even sorry. It was totally worth it!

Men It’s not just us ladies that go loopy, guys adore the summer. The amount of times you hear “where do the hotties hide in winter,” increases as women derobe to reveal the flesh that was masked under an abundance of layers throughout every other day of the rainy and cold year. This makes the men-folk happy, and happiness is contagious don’t you know... Guys also embrace preening regimes. Now I’m not one for the fake-tanned eyebrow plucked types, but I am thankful for the summer time embrace of the razor. Beards be gone! They might be nice to look at, all rugged and manly and so, but I’m not too keen on the red beard they give me; even if it’s just coming from a hug off a best mate. Most fascinatingly is the magnetic awe men feel to the outdoor-flame-cooking-contraption. The cavemen like to get their burn on, and that isn’t just referring to the almost cult-like anti-suncream club that they appear to have blood sworn, but the intense impulse to incinerate by barbeque. Better than raw I assure you! Adrenaline and testosterone levels are proven to rise in warmer climates which somewhat explains the draw to the Hunter Gatherer instinct. Me man, me kill animal, me make fire and burn animal and my naked torso. You Jane, you bring me beer.

Lifestyle Interesting how their craving to cook plummets in winter... We can’t have it all, and summer does bring us a lot! Everything is simpler. Those strangers that used to scowl or even swear at you, now smile. It’s a phenomenal phenomenon that absolutely delights me. We all seem to have a lot more time for each other when it’s not pouring with rain or blowing an icy gale. People venture outdoors, the beer gardens are rammed, the scent of barbeques fills the air, random music seems to come from everywhere, people crawl out of their windows on to shop-fronts, children are covered in ice-cream and mud, and generally everyone seems healthier, happier and more attractive whilst they are enjoying themselves. Summer is about being carefree. Life doesn’t give you many opportunities to kick back with no worries and just enjoy your surroundings and the beauty that the world has to offer. Chilling out while drinking up the drugs that the sun provides gives you the reason to do so. Relax and enjoy life in exactly any way that you should see fit in the spur of the moment that the sun might shine this summer!

This impulsive behaviour is something that seems to take over everyone’s better judgement, like the sun is a commanding force that reduces our usual rational, responsible and reliable selves in to lazy, beaming alcohol enthusiasts.

So... it’s June, the month we should begin to see the sun a little more and the month I turn 26. Wow, how did that happen?! So apart from watching for wrinkles (I kid, I kid) this month I will mostly be shopping for festival, boho inspired clothes – possibly my most favorite style! The chance to wear flowers in our hair is of course a fantastic occasion, and one not to be frowned upon. Now, I have been to a few festivals in the past and feel

like I am at a suitable place to give you some advice. Basically, give up any hope that you’ll feel clean, you have to be at one with nature and let’s be honest - that doesn’t involve anything remotely fresh, does it? Also, stock up on dry shampoo and learn how to braid your hair. I found that braiding my hair made me feel a whole lot better. Braids fit in well with the general boho trend, and helps to hide any unwashed mess, so for that it is brilliant. I once saw a group

twist. I love how this looks over denim shorts, and I’m sure it would look lovely over a little summer dress, or even a bikini by the pool!

of girls wash each other’s hair with bottles of water, it took a while but I guess if you’re desperate? On the other end of the festival scale we saw the celebs strut their immaculate boho style during Coachella earlier this year. This is based in California and all very glamorous in comparison. So, it’s time to start stocking up on floral headbands, fringed kimonos and ripped denim shorts – I can assure you you’ll be needing them.

Whilst trawling through the piles of Coachella style photos I came across this one of Selena and it obviously stood out – this for me is perfect festival fashion and a great mix of festival boho and rock chick.

bindi to her forehead, a beautiful and classic piece.

Crochet, lace material is perfect for a classy cover-up and Selena has styled this beautifully. She has paired her slightly see-through dress with white ripped shorts and a cut-out crop top, which adds to the overall effortless chic effect, without baring all! By adding slightly heavier black boots and a beige fedora she oozes a subtle hint of rock chick, which makes this whole ensemble bang on trend. Nothing too girly, and nothing too harsh – it is the perfect mix of both trends.

The fedora covers her face from the sun, and the bindi is a statement in itself – no heavy necklaces are needed. Not to mention the heavy boots – no one is stepping on her toes.

Of course it is the small details that help to hold the outfit together and make it ooze ‘festival’. The sunglasses have a slight retro vibe and are perfect for Selena’s face shape. She keeps it minimal with jewellery and adds a simple

It is also an incredibly practical festival outfit. A cover up dress is perfect if it gets too hot, a new outfit is hiding directly underneath.

Recreate this outfit with a lace maxi skirt and matching crop top, also as these items are separates it gives you the opportunity to wear them with other pieces – the perfect wardrobe staples. If you feel like a maxi is a little too long for you, pick a shorter lace dress instead; it will have the same boho effect if worn with the same accessories! You could also mix it up a little and pair with some knee-high socks and wellies, but if not then these Dr Martens are a brilliant investment.

If you’re in need of a touch of fake tan but don’t want to dye your freshly changed sheets, simply grab an old duvet cover and sleep inside it – it will protect your clean sheets and you can still get a good nights sleep!

Don’t have enough room in your bag for a mirror but need to re-apply that lippy? Simply turn your phone on to the front-facing camera mode and use that as a mirror instead!

Starting with Skull Sugar Cosmetics® Primer, apply it all over the eyelids up to the brow bone and sweep it under the lower lashes. Next lightly sweep “Virgin” Loose Pigment over the lid with a medium sized flat brush and lightly under the brow bone. ____________________ Using a fluffy round crease brush, apply “Egypt” to the outer corners of the lid, and blend it softly towards the inner eyelid. Wet an angled brush, and smudge “Egypt” into the upper and lower lashes for subtle glow and shimmer. ____________________ Then draw a thin line of the gel liner on the upper lashes and the lower lashes. You can also take a small detail brush and wetting it, apply “Virgin”

to the innermost corners of the eyes to brighten them. Continuing with the face, use a large powder brush to apply the Pressed or Loose Powder Foundation in large circular motions. I used “California Girl”. ____________________ Then use “Party Girl” Bronzer to contour the cheekbones, and around the hairline and chin for soft, sunny warmth. ____________________ I applied “Babygirl” Blush lightly onto the apples of the cheeks and with a medium sized powder brush, swept a small amount of “Virgin” over the top of the cheekbones as a highlighter. Talk about a multitasker!

Lastly, using a small angled brush, I used the “Ash Blonde” Eyebrow Powder throughout my brows in short, small strokes to lightly fill in the brows. To finish the look, I used “Exotica” lipgloss to bring the look together with a soft coral shimmery lip. ____________________ This is a beautiful look for all skin tones, and is very easy to do! Golds, bronze and cool metals are all in style for a glowing summer look.

O.P.I has long been the No1 choice for nail salon professionals the world over and its extensive range of acrylics, gels, and colours have been a favourite with women everywhere for over 30 years. We love the show stopping shades and quirky names such as Chillin’ Like A Villain, Juice Bar Hopping and the current favourite, a gorgeously fruity shade of raspberry pink known as I’m Not Really a Waitress! So when the team from Lena White Ltd, the UKs No.1 stockist for O.P.I, invited Within along to one of it’s inspirational and hugely educational Training Events, we jumped at the chance to immerse ourselves in all things O.P.I. Held at the Manchester Airport Hilton, it was a chance for nail professionals, new and established, to improve their skills and further their nail careers. It’s not just about colour and shade though. O.P.I. is a family run business that takes great pride in the outstanding quality and reputation of their products. A beautiful mani or pedicure is only as good as the professional technician and the products used. OP.I. are

constantly devising and developing new treatments, innovative techniques and fashion inspired colours and textures, so it’s at these events, that beauty professionals can really get beneath the skin of these exciting new advances in hand, foot and nail care.

Indepth Training Carly and the team of highly skilled Educators were on hand to share their extensive knowledge of the O.P.I System, giving indepth training demonstrations and offering advice in all aspects of professional mani and pedicure. Their infectious passion for O.P.I was evident as soon as the demos and tutorials began. Even Within was swept along, opting for a gorgeous, yet understated, French Manicure from the lovely Vicky, who kindly said nothing about my obvious lack of handcare routine. Using the complete O.P.I. system from preparation to professional finish, she carefully coaxed my lacklustre, unloved nails into shape, skillfully applying their unique GelColor and finishing with a combination of ‘Precious’ and ‘Funny Bunny’ to complete the look.

Built on Trust Whilst she worked, she explained why nail professionals and salons put their trust and their careers in the O.P.I. Brand. Not only are their products the last word in mani and pedicure, every laquer and nail colour, every O.P.I. precision titanium tools or patented formula, is backed by the full educational support team at Lena White Ltd. These events are incredibly useful to those on the first step of their career and also to nail professionals hungry for the latest O.P.I developments, techniques and truly stunning range of colours, textures and finishes. Elsewhere, Briony demonstrated pedicure products and techniques to a salon owner who wanted to extend her skills and services. As she explained the various procedures and products, the air was soon abuzz with talk of exfoliating cuticle treatments, AHA’s, foot structure and shape, whilst we were cocooned in the soothing aromas of tea tree & grapefruit. New innovations, such as O.P.I.’s Glitter Off Basecoat, its

Avoplex Nail Care System, and the next generation of enhancements, called Axxium Gel, were demonstrated. Throughout the day, as the tutorials continued, whilst lotions and potions were carefully applied, the lively chatter turned to the latest colours such as the new Brazil range for summer 2014, current trends in nail shape and the growing popularity for perfectly laquered natural nails, something many men are now looking into!

Inspirational Day! By the time all the glitter and sparkle had been packed away, there was a sense that those attending, had gained not just a better understanding of the O.P.I brand, but also an insight into its’ commitment to the education and training of Nail Professionals whose own careers depend on the outstanding quality and reputation of the O.P.I. brand. A truly inspirational day!

If you haven’t checked them out yet, pop in to book an appointment and you will see from their salon that they are serious about hair!

If you haven’t heard of ‘In The Frow’ blog then where have you been?! Victoria, from Manchester is one of the best bloggers our city has to offer and her hair isn’t half bad either! In fact, we have been in envy of the fashion-lover’s hair since we spotted it a number of months back. We just wish we had the bottle (pardon the pun) to go purple too!

Describe yourself in 3 words.

Respectful, Protective and Unconditional.

How did you get into acting?

I started dance when I was 4 and I grew up in a house that encouraged creativity. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been choreographing dance routines or making up plays. Toward the end of highschool i sort of just made a natural transition into acting. My very first agent worked out of my dance studio. It was a tiny little agency, but I got work. I was very lucky. I haven’t looked back since.

What was the last film you saw that moved you?

American Hustle really did a number on me mainly because of Jennifer Lawrence. She’s a beast. There’s nothing she can”t do. She played that character to perfection. The whole cast was incredible. I love characters that are extremely flawed. They’re my favorite to play and after watching this movie, it lit the acting flame inside of me. David O. Russell is my dream director. No one tells a story quite like him.

If you could play any character, past or present?

I loved the 1996 film Marvin’s Room which was based on the 1990 play by Scott McPherson. It’s filled with wonderfully dysfunctional and flawed characters. I did a piece from this play back in college and I was the role of Lee. In the movie Lee is played by the brilliant Meryl Streep.

If you weren’t an actress, what career would you have?

I probably would have opened a tiny dance studio somewhere.

Who do you look up to?

My parents are amazing people. They’re still married and they are best friends. It’s adorable. My father is the calm in the middle of the storm. He has such a quiet strength about him that has always impressed me. I don’t think I’ve ever heard him speak ill of anyone my entire life. They have both been a beautiful example to myself and my siblings.

Favourite childhood memory?

Every summer I would go camping with my Grandparents. They would take all of my

siblings and cousins to the lake. Everyday we would fish and ride bikes and hike and every night all the kids would do some kind of production. Whether it be a dance routine, lip syncing to Whitney Houston or doing some horrible play we made up. My grandparents always made us feel like we were stars.

They have dill pickle and ketchup flavored chips. It sounds gross, but it’s so good. I also miss the Canadian kindness. Everyone is just so genuine.

You danced competitively for many years, would you ever take up a role on Strictly Come Dancing?

A good heart and a sense of humor. I’ve witness my hubby on several occasions take the shoes off of his feet and give them to a perfect stranger on the street. He has a heart of gold. He also has a wicked sense of humor. He’s definitely not a saint!

I think it’s unfair when someone with a dance background is on the show. The whole point of the show is to see someone improve over a short period of time. That’s what I love about it. You should be able to tell who is the professional and who is the celebrity. I’m no where near professional level, but I do have that dance background.

Perfect first date?

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

What do you look for in a man?

I think it’s important to do something physical on a first date. Like going on a hike or a stroll/jog along the beach. That way you can see how the other person moves. I think it’s a little more exciting than sitting at a table eating dinner.

Worst chat up line you have heard?

You spend a lot of time in your car in LA. I was driving on the freeway and I noticed that the guy in the car next to me had written a note that he was holding up for me to see. It said “You’re hot. Call me”. His phone number was scribbled on it. I almost called him just so I could find out if that ever actually worked for him!

Today is your last day on earth, how would you spend it? I would spend it on the beach with my beautiful husband and son.

I hope to be like a fine wine and just get better with age. Men do it. Why can’t women? I feel like I’m just getting started. I hope to still be doing what I love, but on an even deeper level. I want to create and produce. I hope to have a few of my passion projects on the go for the world to see.

Finally, Criminal Minds has made a great impact here in the UK. Is there anything you would like to say to your fans across the pond? Thank you so much for your passion! I am the first to admit that I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you. We love making Criminal Minds and I hope that shows through in our chemistry on screen. Thank you for embracing our little BAU family. Here’s to season 10 and beyond.

Do you have any bad habits?

I drive too fast. I spend way too much time driving. It makes me crazy. I just want to get there as fast as possible. I have to really make an effort to slow down. One day I challenged myself to not drive over the speed limit. I have never been flipped off so many times in my life. I actually turned it into a game! Everyone drives over the speed limit here!

Now you’re living in the US, what do you miss about your birthplace, Canada?

I miss my family and friends the most. Canada has really good junk food, too. Chocolate bars and chips.

This month the Let Me Entertain You singer is playing Manchester’s Phones4U Arena June 29th, 30th and July 2nd as part of his 46-date Swings Both Ways tour. We take a look at his career, lovelife and becoming a father...

The multi-award-winning master of psychological illusion brings his latest one-man show Infamous to The Lowry. Derren Brown begs us all, journalists included, not to reveal anything he has done in the course of two-and-a-half hours. Seeing him for the first time, however, I feel free to report that I was confronted by a dapper, balding, palpably clever chap, who offers a mix of traditional magic, mind-reading and memory games with the flair of a natural showman. Derren instantly makes you feel that you are in the presence of a sharp-brained figure who

can do old-fashioned card tricks and, at the same time, quote the philosopher David Hume. In an age when almost everything in theatre is open to inspection and demonstrably explained, it is refreshing to find a performer who depends on bafflement and secrecy – and leaves you wondering how on Earth it is all done. Coming to The Lowry on Friday 13th June, this is definitely one of our most exciting events for this summer, let alone June. If you have tickets already, you’re in for a spectacular show – if you haven’t got a ticket…there’s no time like the present! Get Tickets at: www.thelowry.com/event

The haunting of Ryecroft hall is well know in Manchester for it was once a hospital to where many of the old patients are said to still wander its hall and cellar which was used as the morgue. Robbie Williams is a legacy in British pop music: the singer-songwriter has received the most nominations and wins in BRIT Awards history; won nine ECHO Awards for Best International Male; and has been inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame alongside the likes of Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Bob Marley and Michael Jackson. This month the Let Me Entertain You singer is playing Manchester’s Phones4U Arena June 29th, 30th and July 2nd as part of his 46-date Swings Both Ways tour. The tour began April 25th in Budapest and Robbie has since worked his way across Europe, before beginning the UK leg of the tour in Belfast on June 13th. Robbie will finish the Swings Both Ways tour in the UK with four dates at the O2 Arena in London before continuing on to Australia where he will perform eight live shows. To date Robbie has sold more than 77 million albums and singles worldwide and achieved huge success in the early 1990s as the youngest member of boy band Take That.

Take That Take That dominated the UK and international charts for the better part of the early 90s, and have achieved a total of 54 number one singles and 35 number one albums around the world, however internal disputes led to Robbie’s departure in 1995. According to the documentary Take That: For The Record, Robbie became unhappy that band mate Gary Barlow and manager Nigel Martin-Smith weren’t taking his musical ideas seriously, and he began drinking heavily and using cocaine. After his near overdose in July 1995, the night before the group was due to perform at the MTV European Music Awards, other members of the group began to question whether Robbie should be in the band, and after a discussion within the band Robbie agreed to quit. Although women all over the world mourned the loss of Robbie and the eventual split of Take That in 1996, Robbie has gone on to become one of the most renowned names in British and international pop music.

Solo The singer’s debut album Life Thru A Lens was released in 1997 and spent 218 weeks in the chart, making it the fifth best selling album in UK history. Robbie has released a total of 17 albums as a solo artist, of which 11 have reached number one, and six are among the top 100 biggest selling albums in the UK of all time, which is more than any other artist or band on the list.

winning the BRIT Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music, but rejoined Take That in 2010 and released the album Progress with the band, which became the second fastest selling album in UK music history. As part of the Progress Live tour the band performed a record breaking eight nights at Wembley Stadium, and the tour became the fastest selling in UK history, with ticket hotlines and websites crashing with demand. Since rejoining Take That Robbie has continued to perform with the band and as a solo artist, and was due to perform with them at the closing ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games, but had to drop out of the performance due to his wife giving birth to Theodora at the same time. The Mirror recently reported that Robbie wouldn’t be rejoining the band this year due to his second child with American actress Ayda Field. The singer confirmed the news that he was expecting a second child with his wife tweeting, “Ayda and I are delighted to announce that Theodora Rose Williams is going to be a big sister.” After tying the knot with Ayda in August 2010 Robbie said: “I wasn’t going to have a kid and I wasn’t going to get married then I met someone who was amazing and fell in love with her completely and I changed all my thoughts and feelings about that.”

Swings Both Ways Swings Both Ways the album has already sold 1.5 million copies worldwide, and is Robbie’s eleventh album to reach number one, putting him joint first with Elvis Presley for the most UK number one albums by a male solo artist. The album, which is Robbie’s second swing album, was produced and co-wrote by music mogul and Robbie’s longtime friend Guy Chambers. The album also features collaborations with Lily Allen, Michael Bublé, Olly Murs, Kelly Clarkson and Rufus Wainwright, who wrote the title track for the album Swings Both Ways, which the duo recorded at Abbey Road Studios with an 80-piece orchestra. Robbie has come a long way from his binge drinking, drug using days, when he said he had an “I can have all of that and no one is going to tell me I can’t” attitude, and recently tweeted a picture of himself looking slim and toned. It seems since settling down and finding love, Robbie has a new and improved outlook on life, and whilst he may not be the party boy we once knew, after recently being named Q Idol the singer is definitely still swinging his way to the top.

Robbie has gone from success to success as a solo artist,

It may only be a small area in the city centre, but Chinatown really is one of Manchester’s greatest delights for me. This is the second biggest Chinatown in the UK (after London) and one of the biggest in Europe. Manchester’s typical weather is brightened a little when you reach Chinatown thanks to some remnant decorations from the Chinese stores and the colourful archway on Faulkner Street. Friends and me usually opt for the Little Yang Sing for lunch – an off-shoot of Manchester’s well established Yang Sing restaurant that has been

serving Chinese food on the city’s Princess Street for more than 30 years. Manchester’s Chinatown grew mostly with Chinese restaurants back in the 1950s but, come the 1970s, other Chinese businesses began to spring up – bakeries, supermarkets, medicinal shops, legal services, financial centres and more. If you’re ever faced with a rainy day and are not sure what to do, I’d recommend a visit to Chinatown for a bit of a change. I certainly enjoy it! Perhaps next time I’ll visit when it’s actually Chinese New Year to witness the celebrations.

Sunday’s pub lunch has become somewhat of a tradition with my husband and me. We have been to quite a few destinations over Manchester and we have come across some great gems, none better than The Horse & Hound in Werneth Low. This rustic country pub already attracts a number of people due to its great views of counties including Yorkshire and Cheshire – and what a view it is! But the spectacular view isn’t just all this pub has to offer. The food is wholesome and delicious – some of the best we have tried during the pubs we have travelled! A definite place to visit if you haven’t checked it out yet!

Australasia is my favourite restaurant in Manchester. I love the food, I adore the cocktails and I am head over heels for the restaurant itself, as far as setting goes it’s in a league of its own. Intriguing from the outside and beautiful within, the bespoke glass entrance on Spinningfields Square, Deansgate, is sure to catch the eye, sweeping guests downstairs to the

irresistible charms of the restaurant’s amazing cuisine and relaxed ambience.

impressive wine list and electrifying guest DJs to keep the party going.

I always ask for one of the ‘comfy’ tables. They run down the right hand side of the restaurant and are super cosy, perfect for couples.

In an area of Spinningfields that was once just located with derelict offices – Australasia has changed the scene massively and has to be one of the best restaurants in the North West, let alone just Manchester!

With a 3 am licence on Friday and Saturday too, the late night bar will boast a compelling list of signature cocktails, an

Well worth a visit if you like architecture and historic books. People come from all over the world just to see a small fragment of St John’s Gospel, measuring less than nine centimetres high. It’s one of the collection of Greek papyri at the library. The building itself took 10 years to build. I like the fact that you enter from a very modern section, with shop and café, then leave all that behind as you go upstairs - it’s quite a contrast. I also like the fact that someone has built this as a remembrance to a much-loved husband. One of Manchester’s most beautiful attractions, John Ryland’s library is without a doubt my favourite part of our city.

Indian restaurants, in Manchester, are much like Shakespearian comedies; they’ve got one formula and they stick to it. The rise, over the last 30 years, of the korma, Tikka masala and Jalfrezi has been almost exponential, with the curry frequently referred to as Britain’s favourite dish. You can walk into a curry house anywhere in the country and quite accurately predict the menu before you’ve sat down. So, with EastZeast, set on Blackfriars street, we were hoping for, if not a restaurant that rearranges the formula, at least somewhere that follows it with

precision and accuracy. And this is exactly what we got. This contemporary and clean restaurant welcomes you instantly with gorgeous décor and friendly staff. The tandoori mixed grill was generous (the price included rice and some masala sauce) and there were some good smoky flavours to the meat. Yes, the menu follows the trusted formula of well-known dishes, but the tasty dishes – especially the Chicken Passanda - are somewhat refreshing from the usual ‘curry houses’ in Manchester. EastZEast is more of a palace than a house!

EastZeast isn’t just a great addition to the restaurant scene in Manchester, it could well be the best Indian restaurant in the city. Serving well-made, delicious, food showing skill and understanding. The menu isn’t radically different from many other Indian restaurants, but it does follow the formula well, producing food that is well balanced; not the overpowering and tedious dishes that are common in many other places. We have tried and tested many of Manchester’s top curry houses, however, we feel EastZEast is most possibly the best yet! You will not regret a visit.
