TTwin sisters, Arrin Freeman Burgand and Farrah Shay Barreth, have the entrepreneurial spirit that many aspire to. Though they are past the years of dressing the same and finishing each other’s sentences, they both claim to still have a sixth sense connection that keeps them remarkably close.
An interesting fact about them is that they are the oldest pre-mature surviving twins born at the Houston County Hospital, now known as the Houston Healthcare. The hospital had just

Of course, that is not the only interesting thing about these two women who insist on finding happiness through entrepreneurial endeavors. Though they may have a mirror image of their lives today with being married, having kids, and doing what they love, their path to getting to this point was different. I will start with Arrin’s journey first as she pointed out to me that she was born eight minutes before Farrah. When Arrin said this to me, I did detect a sense of older sister vibes.
Arrin is a freelance artist and muralist who works all over the Middle Georgia area. She does artwork commissions and, as a fun side job, she has painted the storefronts of many businesses as a window splash painter…the term “Splashed” has been coined to refer to the process.
Arrin is a graduate of Wesleyan College with a degree in Studio Art. After graduation she had a variety of jobs that paved the way for her freedom to work independently. One
position at Georgia’s Children’s Museum as the Art Director. This was a unique position because she was brought in to work part-time through AmeriCorps in an after-school program and part-time in a grant funded position as the Art Director for the Museum. AmeriCorps
is a government funded organization that fosters civic engagement through service and volunteering. Luckily, this opportunity was local, and she was able to refine her talent as an artist and muralist in this unique position.
Like many grant-funded positions, they end, and Arrin found herself transitioning again. She procured a position at First Presbyterian Day School (FPD) in Macon as an elementary Art Teacher. Arrin has left a footprint in each position she has held, to include being commissioned to paint a large-scale canvas that is displayed in the FBD library. She said that all the jobs she has held have made her a stronger ambassador to the entrepreneurial way of life that she now leads.
One job that Arrin speaks fondly of is her position at Georgia’s Children’s Museum as the Art Director. This was a unique position because she was brought in to work part-time through AmeriCorps in an after-school program and part-time in a grant funded position as the Art Director for the Museum.

We know progress is never a straight line and there are always challenges along the way. While pursuing her career path, she was also starting a family with her husband, co-owner of Sider-Crete, Inc. in Hawkinsville, Georgia. They married in 2006 and have two children. Their daughter is in high school and enjoying her hobby of horses and their son is in middle school and attends Atlanta Area School for the Deaf. Though Arrin and her husband have had to deal with some personal challenges with raising a son with special

In the future, Arrin hopes to resume authoring more children’s books. Earlier on in her career she collaborated with an author to illustrate a children’s book, and authored and illustrated a book herself called, Look-ALikes Don’t Act A-Like. This book was born out of her own relationship with her sister.

I think we can all say that we were looking for whatever would make us feel better during these past few unsettled years and Farrah took to wood carving.
Learning from ground zero has made Farrah appreciate the multiple aspects of not only growing a business, but really understanding what it takes when you’re passionate about something. When asked about future goals, she said she hopes to start whittling with a knife for smaller projects but is taking one step at a time to master her craft.

While interviewing these women, the thought of Yin and Yang came to mind. Yin and Yang is a philosophical concept that describes opposite forces which are interconnected. Arrin and Farrah are very connected but have taken different paths to get to where they are today. Their enterprising spirit keeps them connected, but their individual personalities set them apart. Both sisters keep busy with work, family, and all other obligations that are put into their path. Arrin and Farrah both said that their husbands, family, and friends have been incredibly supportive of their dreams. There is no doubt that support will carry these two sisters through the ups and downs of the entrepreneurial journey they are on. HCL

BBy all accounts, Chuck and Jeannette Thomas make a very successful team, both at home and at work. As the brains and brawn behind Masterpiece Construction, the dynamic duo has built and sold hundreds of custom homes in the Middle Georgia area. What’s their secret? Chuck and Jeannette met back in 2008 when she was a cabinet designer. “He had been in the business for a few years, and when we married in 2009, the housing market was pretty slow,” recalls Jeannette. “In fact, at the time he was only building a handful of houses by himself. He built his own home so efficiently that the bank proposed that he do it for a living. As the business grew, however, I got much more involved in the day-to-day operations, and now we make a great team.”
“Along with my role at Southern Classic Realtors as a
listing agent on his homes, I work with Chuck on floor plans, all decorative decisions, and also help search for land for future projects,” says Jeannette, who is a bilingual native of Miami. “Most of my time is devoted to Masterpiece Construction, though, where I handle subcontractors, clients and the public. Chuck is the builder and developer, the man behind the scenes.”
When they aren’t hard at work, Chuck and Jeannette like to spend time with their four children: Rocco, Roman, Cody, and C.J.. “I come from a tight knit family, so we love spending quality time with our children, whether it be camping, fishing, sporting events or just hanging out,” says Jeannette.

You’ve probably heard the old saying that if you find a job that you love, you’ll never have to work a day in your life. Well, if that maxim holds any truth, then Billy Griggers hasn’t worked for the better half of 40 years - or at least he’s one of the lucky few who found a vocation that he truly loves. If you speak to him for more than five minutes, you’ll find the latter to be more accurate.
As founder and owner of Griggers Wealth Management, Billy says his clients have always come first, something that was instilled in him by his father years ago. “My dad repaired plumbing, heating and air conditioning systems for a living, and he shared some wisdom with me a long time ago that still rings true: if you take care of the people, the money will take care of itself. Born and raised in the Macon area, Billy says that his father, Willis (Bubba), played an integral role in determining his ultimate path in life. “My upbringing was your typical middle class one, but I was the first of the Griggers to attend college. This was a huge deal for my dad since he was not college educated, and he worked extremely hard to see my dream fulfilled.”
Unfortunately, there were no student loans back then to help Billy with his schooling; instead, he had to work alongside his father in order to pay for college. “40 years ago, you didn’t borrow money for school, so I spent my summers repairing plumbing, heating and air conditioning systems with my dad. During that time, I really learned so much from him, mainly by watching how he interacted with people. My dad would always help anyone in need, and I saw that time and time again. For instance, we’d

In 1964, Willis attended a workshop at Purdue University to learn about boilers, which were a component of heating systems at the time. It was during this fateful trip to Purdue that the elder Griggers had a revelation: his son was going to attend college - end of story. “At Purdue he saw the opportunities that were possible for college graduates,” says Billy, “and although he was very successful at his job, he wanted a better life for me.”
After graduating from Mercer in 1983 with a Master’s in Business Administration, Billy began working for Prudential. “Although I had a degree, I was only 23 and didn’t know as much as my dad gave me credit for,” he laughs. “Even though he grew up on a farm, my dad was a successful
businessman for over 50 years. He always seemed to have a pearl of wisdom to share, and I listened intently to what he had to say. My dad put me on his shoulders so that I could succeed and then do the same for my kids.”
Utilizing his father’s pearls of wisdom, Billy quickly climbed the corporate ladder, becoming the youngest manager in the Southeast. However, after a decade, he felt it was time for a change. “At that time, Prudential closed down many of its offices, so I began working out of my basement,” he recalls. “I knew it was time for me to move on.”
Thus, Billy began a short stint in the banking business before ultimately deciding to follow his heart. “I’ve always been a Georgia boy who never fit in with big city banking; I’m about as homegrown as you can get. In fact, my wife Deana and I ultimately built our home in Byron, down the street from where I grew up.”
“Billy really has always had a passion for his work, and that’s contagious throughout our office,” explains Hillary Mathews, the firm’s Operations Manager. “I’ve been working with him for the past 16 years, and I think we’ve learned a lot about the needs of the community. For example, we sponsor workshops to help folks with their federal benefits and work with many of our contacts in the community to help our clients.”

It wasn’t smooth sailing at first; Billy says that there were some pretty big hurdles he had to overcome. “I was frankly scared to death. I had three kids at home, and I knew that failure was not an option.”
Bravely opting to give up the safety of a salary and benefits, Billy rolled up his sleeves and began the process of starting from scratch. “It was a big leap of faith; we started at ground zero without any customers. In fact, the company that we now use as our broker/dealer, LPL Financial, turned me down at first because of my lack of clients. Luckily, two friends from my banking days joined me, bringing their client base into the fold; we were soon up and running.” Over the next 20 years, the firm has helped more than 700 households with $200,000,000 invested. “Most people who see our little building on the website don’t realize that we’re now bigger than the bank program I managed.”

able to help others when they need you. Whether it’s helping someone through a family crisis or just lending an ear, I enjoy what I do.”
Over two decades after it opened its doors, Billy’s firm still operates on the principles of hard work, loyalty, and personalized service. “I think what sets us apart from other firms is we’re just regular folks; we don’t put on any airs,” he says. “We have people coming through our doors because I grew up here and because I put into practice what my dad instilled in me. I’ve learned that he was right; if you take care of the people, the rest will take care of itself, so that’s what I’ll keep doing.”

Frances talks about her career in the Air Force and the amazing opportunities it afforded her before becoming a business owner. “I was in for 19 years and 7 months,” Frances recalls. “My first year I joined as a weapons simulator, which is radar. My first duty station was in Panama City, Florida.”
As this station was a school location, Frances trained other Airmen to do radar. She worked as a weapons simulator for a year before pursuing musical opportunities.
“I found out about a group called Tops In Blue, a Vegas style musical group that travels around the world,” she says. After a successful audition, Frances joined the group and spent her second year in the Air Force traveling with Tops In Blue. [and then she crosstrained into the Air Force band.]****
During her time in the Air Force band, Frances was stationed in Massachusetts, Japan, Warner Robins, and Illinois. Frances enjoyed bringing music to people’s ears in different parts of the world.
While stationed at Warner Robins Air Force base, Frances experienced unmatched comradery that she works to emulate as a business owner. “This town is very supportive of military and Warner Robins Air Force Base,” Frances testifies. “Because you are in a military community, they understand what you’re going through.”
Touched by the kindness of others while she served our country, Frances mirrors this undying support in the practice of her business. Frances has partnered with several prior military members to bring especially tailored care to the military families of Houston County.
“[We have] two Air Force veterans, one Marine, and one Navy,” Frances says of the Synergy team. “We feel like we’re able to connect a little bit more to the client than most people can. To be more understanding and welcoming to this community – because it is a military community.”
In her time with the Air Force band, Frances toured alongside performers like Daughtry, Brad Paisley, and Kelly Clarkson. But though it was an invigorating experience, she values her work as a local business owner. “I would much rather be here making a life and being involved in the community than doing any of that stuff. The health and wellness that we’re able to create and provide means more to me than [anything].”
However, her love of music remains an important part of her life. Frances has been singing in the A to Z band locally for seven years and has enjoyed every moment.

lived in and grew up in. I think that’s the best thing we can get out of this.”

WWhen one spark of kindness ignites, it has the power to spread like wildfire setting a community ablaze with a passion to make a difference. Women Reaching Our Community is a missionbased nonprofit organized by women who desire to empower and improve the lives of others.
President Cindy Collier was involved with the nonprofit from day one. The idea for the ministry came from founder Mitzi Davis. “I hadn’t seen Mitzi in nine years,” Cindy recalls of the time. “We had been close friends but then they moved away.”
The generous people of Houston County that have committed themselves to this mission are passionate about empowering and supporting others through every walk of life. “There are some good women in Perry, Georgia that want to see people taken care of and their lives to be enhanced and made better,” Cindy says. “That’s what we’re trying to do, one person at a time.”
One night in 2011, Mitzi called Cindy and told her that the Lord had placed this ministry on her heart. “She asked me, ‘Do you ever see Donna Allen?’ and Donna was sitting at my kitchen table that night.” Together, the three ladies jump-started the ministry having little idea the impact it would grow to have on the community.
“We started studying scripture, praying and asking how we were supposed to reach out to women in our community.” For the next three years, the ladies met intentionally to plan their steps and work out the intricate details of turning their vision into a life-changing mission.
In 2014, Women Reaching Our Community officially became a nonprofit organization. “We’re a 501c nonprofit,” Cindy says. “We went through all of that early on to get that worked out with the lawyers.” The ladies felt led to use the ministry to empower other
women and provide opportunities for them to impact those in the community that are less fortunate. With the legalities in order, they set out to begin work.
They started doing food drives to help feed the hungry, and as word got out many came forward needing help. “We began working with people that were being referred to us as living in their cars, trying to find housing for them, putting them up. And then it began to grow.”
As demand for their help grew, so did the number of volunteers. As a nonprofit, Women Reaching Our Community operates solely on material donations and contributions of time. Because of the growth, they established a board comprised of six members. With a strong group of passionate individuals, their efforts went even farther to help the local community.
“We were surprised at how many people are considered homeless in Houston County,” Cindy admits. Sadly, she says, “There is a fiveyear wait for any of the reduced housing here in town, and so a lot of people are either bunking up with friends or they’re staying in their cars.”
Initially, they starting feeding the homeless while bringing them provisions such as socks, clothes, umbrellas and blankets. In some circumstances, they have gotten women off the street and into a motel where they can freshen up and start applying for jobs.
Cindy talks of one woman they helped. “She and her husband were on the streets together and he literally walked away from her and left her alone.” Abandoned and afraid, she was at her wits end until those at Women Reaching
Our Community swept her off the street.
“We put her in a motel, got her clothing, got her groceries, let her rest. We took her to the library so that she could put in applications for jobs.” In no time, the woman had a job, a paycheck, and was buying herself groceries. Little by little, she gained her independence in a beautiful journey towards becoming self-sufficient. “The transformation has been amazing,” Cindy shares.
Over the years, they have helped countless women get back on their feet by getting them off the street and helping them find work. For others, they have provided reliable transportation to maintain their jobs. This has made all the difference for these women in feeling empowered to take care of themselves.
They created the Kindness Cupboard which serves to conveniently feed the hungry. Fully stocked with donated goods, the cupboard is filled with dry food provisions and open for anyone in need. “There are canned meats and crackers, sausages, tuna fish, chicken salad,” Cindy names a few. “[It’s filled] three times a week. Usually by the very next day it’s gone.”
Early on in their ministry, they opened a highend thrift store called Renew. Their items include things like clothes, home goods, furniture and children’s toys which have all been donated by community members. And while every item is priced only at a quarter, the proceeds of the store largely fund the entire ministry.
Cindy talks about their hopes for the future and goals in continuing to support women in need. In efforts to create a Homeless No More community, she says, “We’re hoping and praying about a place that will provide some housing that we can oversee and we will be able to have multiple families there down the road.”
Additionally, they have plans in the works to implement a scholarship program to set the next generation up for success. “We’re hoping that we can break the cycle of poverty mentality and that [kids] will recognize the value of education and staying in school.” While 70% of the people they help are

women, an astounding 80% overall dropped out of school.
To combat this, Cindy explains their plans to offer tutoring starting at the third grade. “We will have people in the community that are well known to come and encourage them, be a role model for them.” From news anchors to doctors and lawyers, these community members will mentor the children and show them the opportunities that lie ahead.
Having spent over 12 years working at four different schools in Houston County, Cindy believes there is no limit to what any child can do. Her hope is to inspire the children of Houston County to put in the necessary work to set themselves up for a brighter future.

The Swanson recently celebrated two successful decades of serving delicious southern cuisine in a uniquely historical atmosphere.
Imagine dining at a restaurant that literally transports you into the distant past- into a time when gas lamps (or candles) were used for light, folks used coach horses as their transportation, and a butter churn was a household necessity. While there are some eating establishments that probably come to mind, sadly in this era that focuses on immediate consumption of cheap food, the number of places that serve homecooked meals seem to be in short supply nowadays.
The Swanson, a dining establishment whose construction dates back to the late 18th century, recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. The restaurant was named after Ms. Norine Swanson-Jones, who played the organ for Perry’s churches and was very active in the community, establishing Perry’s first kindergarten in her home in the 1930’s. Many locals still remember attending her school and have signed the Swanson’s guest book with the years of their attendance.
When patrons first enter the restaurant’s doors on Carroll Street, they can immerse themselves in over 200 years of history while enjoying some of the best southern food in Georgia. Keeping in harmony with

For The Swanson’s anniversary celebration, balloons and cake was served to each customer. Both the Warner Robins and Perry Chambers of Commerce were in attendance, as was Mayor Randall Walker. Owners Kim and Mike Sheridan expressed their deep gratitude to all their employees and customers for their continued
support in helping to make the Swanson such a success. “We were so excited to celebrate our 20th year with local dignitaries and staff,” says Kim. “We feel so welcomed here in Perry. We love our customers and are just so very thankful for them.”
Over two centuries before Kim and Mike would purchase the building, the Cox-Swanson home was actually very well-known in the region. Originally constructed in 1780 as a livery stable, the structure was eventually converted into a home. Since then, the house

In 1903, the home was purchased by Nora Cox, Norine Swanson Jones’ grandmother. “Norine was very well known and respected in the community,” explains Kim. “In addition to playing piano for both the Baptist and Methodist churches, she also babysat some of the children of her former students when she was older.”
Like most military families, Kim and Mike have “lived all over” before eventually deciding to move to Perry. “We settled here in the late 70s when Mike got a job at Robins Air Force Base, and this is where we raised our children,” explains Kim. “I’m a systems analyst by trade, and my job required a good deal of traveling. I came up with the idea (to open) a sandwich shop so that I could stay closer to
home since our (then) teenager was very active in sports and school.”
It was back in 2001 when the couple decided to purchase The Cox-Swanson home with the idea of opening a small sandwich shop. “We were looking at locations around town, and then we learned that the United Methodist Church was interested in selling the (Cox-Swanson) residence,” recalls Kim. “They were using it as office space as well as for Sunday School classes.”
Fortunately for the Sheridans, though, Mike could put his mechanical engineering skills to work in order to convert the home into a working restaurant. “He has some pretty extensive architectural and design skills, so we were confident that he could make it into a functioning dining establishment,” says Kim.
Mike had his hands full because there had to be some major renovations before The Swanson was ready for the public. “Right off the bat, I had to entirely replace the plumbing and electrical systems,” explains Mike. “We added some

bathrooms and even enlarged the back part (of the kitchen) by about eight feet. We also converted the stable into a prep room, office and storage area. Of course, then all of the restaurant equipment had to be purchased and installed.”

Although Kim had been cooking Wednesday night suppers for the Methodist Church, the couple had no knowledge about the workings of the restaurant business. However, they received some much-needed mentoring from the UGA Small Business Development Center.

It didn’t take long before the entire menu would revolve around traditional southern foods. “I just had to convert my recipes into restaurant meals, so there was definitely some trial and error,” says Kim. “Everything that we prepare is done from scratch, the way your
mother would do it.” The Swanson cooks everything to order, and some staples include salmon croquets, sweet potato casserole, collard greens, cream corn, just to name a few.
Over the years, word of mouth spread about the unique southern eatery, and it became a local favorite, despite the initial “identity crisis.” Kim attributes the success of The Swanson to just one word – stubbornness. “Failure just wasn’t an option for us. As anyone who’s opened a restaurant will tell you, it’s a struggle, and it certainly was the case for us for many years. We just never thought about giving up, and here we are 20 years later.”
Now boasting a staff of over 40 employees, The Swanson has become famous for its charming ambience, fried chicken, fried green tomatoes, and its “little biscuits.” The restaurant was even honored by Garden & Gun magazine for being the only Georgia restaurant selected as one of “The Best Chicken Joints in the
South.” In addition, The Swanson provides food for the Guardian Center, a state-of-the-art training campus in Perry.
“Our philosophy has always revolved around consistency,” says Mike. “For instance, we don’t deviate from our recipe book. All of our vegetables are fresh, except for the green beans, and our entrees are made to order. Basically, what is says on the menu is what we do for you.”
So, whether it’s lunch on the porch or dinner in one of its beautifully (and newly) decorated dining rooms, The Swanson is a must for any fan of great southern food in a casual yet elegant atmosphere. Bon Appétit! HCL

Southern Picket Fence Company owner David Garrett talks about the astounding growth they have seen in their second year of operation. As word of their quality craftsmanship continues to spread, demand for their services has nearly tripled.
“The price of lumber has significantly decreased which has increased demand,” David explains. Southern Picket Fence Company offers better prices allowing families to affordably enhance their outdoor living spaces.
With the increase in projects came the need for a bigger team. In 2021, David partnered with his oldest son, Cameron, who founded Nice Fence Co. The pair make such a good team that David’s youngest son, Baylor, decided to join them.

MMost educators usually extol the path of attending college in order to secure a white-collar job as the sole road to fulfillment. And with so much pressure to follow this traditional path, it may seem like there’s no other way to succeed in today’s world. However, there are plenty of happy, successful professionals like Charles Ayer who are proof positive that there’s other ways to go in order to succeed in life.
As founder and owner of The Sports Center, a full-service boat and sporting goods dealer in Perry, Georgia, Charles believes his success can be attributed to a lot of hard work as well as good old American tenacity. “Hard work never bothered me, and I tried to make a hobby into my livelihood. Also, if you surround yourself with good people, then it makes for an easier time.”
Born and raised around the Perry area, Charles originally had planned on becoming an electronics technician after high school, but as with many things in life, fate dealt him another hand. “After graduation, I went into the Civil Service to work at Robins Air Force Base under their 36-month apprenticeship program,” he recalls. “At just 18, I was attending their technical school while working on the radar system for the B52 bomber. To be honest, my heart wasn’t really in it, but I couldn’t leave the program early or I’d have to pay for the schooling. After the required 36 months, I needed to find something else to do.”

school,” says Dianne, his wife of over 50 years. “He knew that what he had been in training for was not what he ultimately wanted to do, so he borrowed some money to go another route. I was only 18 and a little naïve, but I supported him in his decision because I trusted him.”
“I don’t remember ever not working,” he says. “Since I was 10, I picked cucumbers, okra and all types of produce.”
As a result, he felt more at home driving a tractor than servicing a fighter jet. Thus, after his apprenticeship at Robins AFB was over, Charles had to make a critical decision, one that would affect his life in a profound way.
“I had always hunted and fished as a kid, so naturally I thought it would be wise to pursue that line of work.”
Luckily for Charles, a friend named Sonny Heard happened to own a small paint store and was in need of some help. “Sonny’s partner was pulling out at the time, and he needed someone to assume half the business. I began renting out half of his store. I sold bait and tackle while Sonny handled the painting end of the business. At that point, I was just trying to make a living.”
“From the beginning, he was totally committed to making it work,” says wife Dianne. “My husband has always been the type of person to look forward, not backward, and was very motivated to succeed. He worked some very long hours for seven days a week to get things off the ground.”

Dealer of the Year” award from Boat and Motor Magazine for being one of the largest boat dealers in the world.
It was also around this time that Charles purchased a pecan orchard. “I wanted to make money with my hobby rather than spending money on it,” he explains. “Also, when you have three children at home, you do whatever you have to do to make ends meet.”
In 1993 The Sports Center’s sales department moved across the interstate to Sam Nunn Boulevard, where it’s currently located. A former Kmart store, the building was roughly 52,000 square feet in size when Charles acquired it, adding another 25,000 square feet for a showroom, and 20,000 square feet for a warehouse. It was also around this time that Charles also sold the parts and service department on Valley Drive to Jack Nash, which operates as a separate entity. “We used to rig all of his boats,” explains Jack, “and now we provide all the parts and service for the sales department. Steve and Fran Prudhomme followed each other around the country for a number of years without knowing it. Their traveling brought them to Savannah, where they continued to avoid each other, unintentionally, for several years.
Eventually, the stars aligned and they met at a restaurant, Steve seeking a buffet meal following an exerting bike ride, Fran, a single mother, working as a server to supplement her job at a bank. Steve’s thirst almost derided the relationship before it started.
A native of New Jersey, Steve moved to Savannah in 1991 and worked a a newspaper sportswriter on Hilton Head Island. Fran’s a native of Ohio who moved to Savannah in the late ‘80s. She graduated from Armstrong State University with a degree in English and worked as a substitute teacher for a brief time before getting a job with a bank, calling on her previous experience in that field.

Steve and Fran both grew up in the North, albeit hundreds of miles apart. Steve was stationed in Monterey, Ca., for six months in 1977. That was about the same time Fran lived in Anaheim, Ca. Steve subsequently spent three years at Fort Hood, Texas, working as a French linguit in the Army. Fran, meanwhile, had moved to Houston. Steve returned to Georgia in 1980 and worked at Internal Revenue for several years while taking classes at Georgia State. Fran, married and with a young daughter, had moved to Georgia and worked for a short time at an insurance office located several miles from Internal Revenue. They may have crossed paths, but they weren’t destined to actually meet until early 1994.

IIt is not often that one gets to impact a community while simultaneously living out their childhood dream. Steven Putman, owner of Olde World Barber Shoppe, never imagined the sheer success he would find in doing what he truly loves.
Growing up, cutting hair was a hobby for Steven. “In middle school and high school, I would cut my brothers and my friends hair,” he says. However, he adds, “I didn’t think I could ever do it as a career.”
Never daring to dream of taking his hobby further, Steven spent his 20s working in insurance, the automotive industry, and even poker dealing. While these jobs got him through, he began to wonder if he could make a
difference doing what he loved.
In his early 30s, Steven went through the Central Georgia Technical College Barbering Program where he felt at home in his career for the very first time. Almost immediately, he opened Olde World Barber Shoppe. “We opened in 2014,” he says. “I was less than a year out of barber school. I just went out on a limb, and I was able to build a clientele really quickly that first year.”
When he opened the shop, Steven was determined to use his business to impact the community. “The main thing I love about this area, it’s called the international city for a reason.” Having lived his whole life in Houston County, Steven was familiar with the diversity

He admits a trick they use to keep customer satisfaction at an all-time high. When a customer comes in for a cut, their barber will input notes about their visit including details from their conversations. When the customer returns, they will be asked about their new job or how their kids soccer games are going regardless of who is cutting their hair. This personal touch goes a long way.

Often hiring new barbers with little experience, he says, “When I’m interviewing, we don’t even care about the haircut quality. We’re looking for customer service super stars, and we can teach them to cut hair.” His employee’s experience range from bartenders to shoe salesmen, all of which are thriving under Steven’s guidance.
Because of this, the team at Olde World Barber Shoppe is a beautifully blended group of service oriented individuals passionate about enhancing the community’s barber shop experience. “We have by far the most diverse staff in all of Georgia,” Steven says proudly. “We have a variety of religious preferences, sexual orientation, old, young – everyone’s welcome and they’re all represented in our shop.”

Steven enjoys giving back to the community that has supported his business. “We do a whole bunch of charity stuff every year,” he says. “We do free haircuts for the homeless in Macon and back to school haircut events. We sponsor little league all-star teams and the Houston County wrestling team.”
They also offer free classes for Central Georgia Technical College. “Since the industry has blown up, they have dual enrollment for high school kids. They get halfway through their license by the time they get through high school.” Steven relishes the opportunity to teach and encourage barbers with the passion for haircutting he also shared at that young age.

“We came to Summerhill, which was then known as New Perry Nursing Home, in 1973,” Wanda says. “In 2001, the name was changed to Summerhill Senior Living and reflected the growth and technology of enhanced patient services and amenities for the 160 nursing care beds.” Today, Summerhill offers Veranda West with specialized Alzheimer’s/Dementia Care and Veranda Rehab with short-term rehabilitative services including physical, occupational and speech therapy. There are 15 assisted living apartments at Andrews Terrace, long-term nursing care beds and 12 senior independent living villas. Wanda explains their transition to Perry saying, “Bill’s father, the late William C. Davis, Sr., was a CPA, nursing home owner and operator, and original member of the Georgia Health Care Associations’ Board of Directors who served as president of GHCA in 1976.” When William Davis, Sr. told Bill and Wanda about an opportunity to serve the elderly in Perry, they were eager to embark on this journey. “We moved to Perry with one car, a little bit of furniture, and our one-month-old daughter,” Wanda tells me. Following his father’s footsteps, Bill served as Chairman of the Board in 2014-2015 while Wanda served on the Board of Directors in 2016-2017.

I guess that’s why Bill and I don’t plan to retire until we become residents at Summerhill.”

In their commitment to the residents, Bill, Wanda, and their staff recognize the importance of allowing residents to continue to be an essential part of the community. They encourage this by enabling residents to vote, enjoy Perry Players theater productions, and encouraging outside activities and field trips.
Proverbs 29:18, which says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” The Davis family has adopted this creed as their life’s mission, desiring to serve residents beyond the basics of providing a place to live. Their vision has always included looking ahead to provide the highest quality of care available in a homelike setting.
When they arrived in Perry in 1973, Bill was a recent pre-med college graduate and Wanda was an RN who worked in intensive and coronary care. From the ripe young age of 24, they started their 49+ years providing excellent individualized care for the residents they serve.
Bill began work at Summerhill as Administrator while Wanda worked as the Director of Nursing. They worked to achieve a healthy balance between family life and growing their company in those early years. “I remember taking a bassinet to my office for our daughter, Bristol, until I could obtain appropriate
child care,” Wanda recalls.
The family grew to include four children…Bristol, Nova, Leslie, and Chip. “We involved our children from the very beginning. Starting with Bristol in the bassinet, the four siblings have prepared walls for painting, painted, mowed, and even worked under the building when pipes were frozen.”
As they acquired more facilities, Bill transitioned from Administrator of Summerhill to form Crossroads Medical Management and serve as CEO, with Wanda filling his previous role as Administrator of Summerhill. They continued to find ways to adapt to the changing times, and Wanda eventually joined Bill at Crossroads Medical Management.
Joe Andrews then became Administrator of Summerhill where he served for many years before also joining Crossroads Medical Management. Joe had served in every leadership position at Summerhill before joining Crossroads Medical Management as
COO.
Phil Garner, the current Administrator of Summerhill, recently received the prestigious Silver Award at the American Health Care Association convention in Nashville, Tennessee, for excellence in care at Summerhill. Dr. Johnny Gallemore was the medical director of Summerhill in 1973, and the current medical director overseeing all patient care at Summerhill is Dr. Appavuchetty Soundappan.
Bill and Wanda have based their family business on “Residents Matter Most” and are still very involved in Summerhill today. Bill and Wanda’s son, William C. Davis, III (Chip), a CPA, joined Crossroads Medical Management in 2003 as the Chief Financial Officer.
It is vital to keep up with the abundance of technology and information available today to enhance patient services. Wanda says they accomplish this with continual education, skills training, compliance with ever changing regulations, and awareness of
available resources. This has been necessary in providing the best care possible for residents.
“We have seen the need for more shortterm rehabilitation in the last several years,” Wanda shares. Residents now enter their own private rooms in Veranda Rehab and then, optimally, discharge home once they have completed their therapy programs.
All residents enjoy the comfort of Summerhill Senior Living during their recovery with around the clock care from administrative personnel, physicians, nurses, dieticians, social service workers, activity specialists and wound care specialists. The help of the entire team ensures that patients find themselves on a quick path to recovery.
“Over the years, we have changed as needs and technology change,” Wanda says. “From state-of-the-art therapy programs to specialized memory care, the highly trained staff is equipped to handle short and longterm patient care services.”
Through their 49+ years of operation, some employees have stayed at Summerhill for 30 to 40 years. “It makes all the difference when the residents consistently see the same caregivers every day. We try to assign the caregivers to the same residents as much as possible. Then the caregivers really get to know the residents, know their routines, and often become like family.”
Retaining quality staff has helped the overall flow of Summerhill and makes Bill and Wanda feel like they are working alongside family. “We have an intensive search and interview process to make sure we’re getting the right employee for the job,” Wanda says. “Each employee comes in with his/her own unique strengths, experience, and training. It takes this combination of unique strengths and abilities to complete a fully functioning and cohesive staff.”

OOctober 15, 2022 marked the 40th anniversary celebration of the Sukey Hart Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. At the event, the remaining three organizing members were recognized by current chapter Regent Cynthia Davis. Charter member and National Executive Officer Virginia Lingelbach, who joined within the first year of the chapter’s organization, was also recognized.
The anniversary celebration took place at the Assembly of God church in Warner Robins. Those in attendance included Sukey Hart members, DAR members from other chapters, and DAR State Officers.
Organized in 1982, the Sukey Hart Chapter has served the community in their unwavering dedication to historic preservation, education, and patriotism ever since.

Every moment spent contributing to the impactful work of the DAR is incredibly rewarding. Virginia’s own dedication to the DAR has inspired her sister, two daughters, and three granddaughters to join Sukey Hart Chapter. A sweet family legacy, their work honors the family that came before them and stands to inspire the family yet to come.
Warner Robins. Jane wasted no time in establishing Sukey Hart Chapter. She worked as an RN and arranged the chapter’s meetings to take place at night to accommodate other working women such as herself.
With a handful of members and more soon to come, Sukey Hart Chapter held their organizing luncheon on October 7, 1982 at Jane Daniel’s residence. The first official meeting was held on November 15, 1982 at the Robins Air Force Base Officer’s Club. These events marked the beginning of what has been a beautiful journey for this chapter.
“Forty years may not seem like a long time, but the future is built on
the past,” says chapter Regent Cynthia Davis. “We are moving forward in the beautiful legacy that our founding DAR members and organizing members of Sukey Hart Chapter have set for us in DAR service and friendship.”
To become a member of the DAR, a woman 18 or older must have a direct ancestor involved in some way with the Revolutionary War. Charter member Virginia Lingelbach shares her experience joining the Sukey Hart Chapter in 1983 shortly after it was founded.
“I had always sort of been the family historian and genealogist,” Virginia shares. “My sister called one day and said that her bridge club was going to form a DAR
club in Warner Robins and asked if I would help her with her papers. I said, ‘Of course!’”
Virginia compiled the documents and family bibles she had collected over the years and set to working on her sister’s papers. However, the bridge club’s plans fell short. “I folded up everything and stuck it back in the box and went on,” Virginia recalls.
Sometime later, Virginia was invited to help grow the newly founded Sukey Hart Chapter. With her paperwork almost already done, she quickly completed the required work and was accepted on her first try in April 1983.
While her experience was a relatively uncomplicated one, Virginia talks about the great efforts women
go through to prove the genealogy required in becoming a member. “It is a very involved process, a very detailed process, and it is very time consuming,” she says.
While the genealogy required by the DAR has always been thorough, it has become more extensive over the years. They now have 33 professional genealogists at their Washington headquarters who work full time. And because more resources and documentation have become available throughout the years, they expect more in terms of proving applicants’ lineage.
For the first three generations, they require primary proof to include birth certificates, marriage certificates, and death records of each family member. As you can imagine, locating your greatgrandparents marriage certificate is not the easiest
thing to do. “That is daunting,” Virginia admits. “A lot of people don’t know how to go about getting those documents.”
Thankfully, the Sukey Hart Chapter is armed with women ready to assist prospective members in this process. And after the necessary paperwork has been completed, they eagerly welcome each new member with open arms.
“The DAR is the largest nonpolitical patriotic women’s service organization in the world,” Virginia states. Boasting 190,000 members, the organization has evolved from the traditional DAR that was created in the 1800s. “We observe and encourage diversity, which I think is a big change from the 30s and 40s,” Virginia shares.

years, it has grown to welcome and celebrate the participation of Indian American women, African American women, and Spanish American women. “In those respects, it’s not an organization for affluent white women,” Virginia clarifies. “It’s a service organization where we strive for diversity.”
The impact of the Sukey Hart Chapter on Warner Robins is specially tailored to the unique needs of the community. “Berry College in Rome, Georgia was the very first school supported by the DAR. I’m proud that Georgia daughters supported the first DAR school,” Virginia says. To this day, the DAR is the longest supporter of Berry College.
The Sukey Hart Chapter focuses much of its attention on veterans who have fought to defend our rights. In their efforts to honor veterans nationwide, members raised $350,000 for the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC. In addition, the chapter participates in Wreaths Across America every year.
Regent Cynthia Davis speaks proudly for their ongoing support of military veterans. “We partner with the 50th Vietnam War
Commemoration that gives thanks in particular to Vietnam Veterans,” she says. “We support troops overseas and always try to give homemade Christmas cards and gifts to local veterans in nursing homes.”
In addition, Georgia has the very first historical property that was saved and preserved. The home belonged to George Walton who was one of Georgia’s three signers of the Declaration of Independence.
On a national level, Virginia says, “We own a building in Washington, DC that encompasses one full city block. It is the largest building in the world owned and maintained solely by women.” These are just some of many accomplishments the DAR has boasted over the years.
While participation in this organization seems intense, members are given the flexibility to be as involved in the day-to-day operation of the Sukey Hart Chapter as they please. But while participation in meetings and various service projects is entirely optional, each member must pay their annual dues to maintain their membership.
