The Centres of Excellence (CoEs) are physical or virtual centres of research that concentrate existing research excellence and capacity and resources, to enable researchers to collaborate across disciplines and institutions on long-term projects that are locally relevant and internationally competitive, in order to enhance the pursuit of research excellence and capacity development.

DSI-NRF Centres of Excellence Scholarships for Honours, Masters and Doctoral support Varies according to the CoEs thematic research areas Varies according to specific funding levels Refer to Honours, Masters and Doctoral PCS and FCS Varies according to funding levels Postgraduate students who have been recruited by an NRF-funded supervisor to be part of a research project/ group, under any of the NRF Funding Instruments listed below, should apply via the General Scholarships Category and should provide the NRF GrantUID Number (unique identification number), OR, provide the NRF Application Reference Number if the research project application has been submitted to the NRF for review.

Students should list the supervisor under the reference section of their application for support under the application and indicate the role as Masters or Doctoral supervisor: Applications for funding must be submitted through the NRF Online Submission System by accessing the link: https://nrfsubmission.nrf.ac.za/ Universities set their own internal cut-off dates for applications and applicants must abide by those dates.

Average of ≥ 65% mark for major subjects in the final year of undergraduate study for students that can demonstrate financial need

Partial Cost of Study (PCS) A minimum average of between 65% - 74% for major subjects in the final undergraduate year of study

NRF criteria on age, race and gender applies. Students should approach prospective supervisors or CoE Research/Business managers in this regard well in advance of the commencement of their studies.
