GRADUATES EBONY canwell-WALKER My experience of studying at WITT was great! You can really find yourself there, it’s quite tight-knit and cosy enough to be yourself. My favourite classes were ones where I could draw, Drawing and 2D Studies. Currently I am looking to go into hospitality and broaden my skills for future plans. My piece of advice for future students would be, build on your field/skill as much as you can and look for all possible ways to broadcast those skills.
JOSHUA SANDS CHLOE REID My experience at WITT really opened up my mind to ideas and new ways of thinking. I chose to study at WITT because it was local and gave me the opportunity to work and study. Right now I’m working at TGM Creative as a Graphic and Web Designer and loving it!! My advice to future students looking to study at WITT would be, get to WITT early so you get a good car park ;).
I decided to enrol to see if my passion for sculpture could be a career option. My favourite classes were: Visual Arts Context (Level 6), taught me critical lessons about art making. Visual Arts (Level 4), gave me the confidence to pursue art as a career. Cultural Design (Level 5), which introduced me to woodcarving. Exhibition (level 6), a valuable experience and I highly recommended it. Now that I have graduated I am working part time to raise funds for new materials and tools. My piece of advice to future students is, whatever you like to make or do that led you to art school, don’t stop doing it.
JESSIE ALLeN YU PING PAN For me studying at WITT was a very fun and priceless experience. Being an International student I got a lot of support from the tutors and my classmates with essay writing and other areas where my English wasn’t very strong. I choose WITT because I love New Plymouth city and the people there are so friendly. At the moment I am currently living in Wellington, studying at Weltec. I am doing 3rd year so I can gain the degree. My advice to future students is be passionate, nothing is impossible, do your best and never give up.
I felt really lucky that WITT had a course that covered both Art & Design; it was such a fun year. The projects were really varied and interesting, covered a huge range and Drawing 2 really pushed me outside of my comfort zone and I got to try new techniques that I wouldn’t have otherwise. My favourite memory would probably be Exhibition, it was really cool to see the culmination of everyone’s work. Everyone was just buzzing with the excitement of finishing study. Currently I’m doing freelance design work. I advise future students to make the most of it. You only get one chance and you’ll never have the time or freedom to experiment and learn as much as when you’re studying, Try different things and work hard, the more you learn, the more inspired you’ll be and the more successful afterwards. Have fun, it makes for more interesting work.
27
CHRISTINE BAYLIS I chose to study at WITT because it was local and I had heard good things about the course. My favourite memory would have to be in Collaborative Studies 2 working with my group on the ‘Transformative Space’ posters and finally getting an A for all the hard work and effort put in. My advice to future students looking to study at WITT would be don’t give up, as once you have completed the course you will have a real sense of satisfaction and achievement.
