PORTFOLIO 2011-2016 WIWAT LERKAMNOUYCHOKE
In the concept of traditional and contemporary architecture, the building does not only stand for fucntion anymore. On otherhand, the architecture truely reflects the moment of time, context, environment, geography, weather, history and technoogy. In my opinion, our ‘root’ is become more important than any time in architecture’s history. In this portfolio, I am proud to present my vision on Thai-architecture development in this period of time. Especially, the effort to preserve our ancestor’s wisdom by researching and analysing the history and character istic in Thai architecture. Therefore, if we can deeply understand this path of our architecture, we will be able to appreciate more of it’s value than before.

Distinguish characteristics of natural heritage, heart-warming society, beautiful atmosphere, everlasting history and culture are what make Chiang Mai attractive to both Thai and foreign tourists. In each and every year, all tourists from around the world travel to Chiang Mai in order to go sightseeing and seek for relaxation. For this reason, hospitality industry has become a significant deal for Chiang Mai. Additionally many tourist activities became more and more popular. Therefore, tourism is the key factor which helps to brings wealth and prosperity to Chiang Mai. Based on the foregoing, hospitality industry has to be expanded in order to support an increasing trend of tourism. Currently, many new projects was planned to be constructed on many areas in Chiang Mai. In various projects, the architectural design was done by neglecting the true spirit of Chiang Mai and nature of the location. The purpose of such designs is only to be able to satisfy the needs of commercial investors, notwithstanding any other factors which may cause an adverse impact on Chiang Mai’s landscape. The occurrence of commercial investment in the past thirty years together with other factors resulted in the disappearance of charm and value of Chiang Mai, namely Chiang Mai people’s way of lives and local architecture. However at this time, people have already changed. Not only local civilian, but also tourist, organization and government, began to realize the importance of tradition and culture. From this changing moment, Lanna conservation and revival has occurred. Many organizations were founded during the last ten years of such significant change. This conservation movement is the origin of this thesis, ‘CHIANG MAI CULTURAL TOURISM RESORT’, to be a guideline of harmonized combination between globalization, tradition and culture.

The master plan was begun with context of the site existing and criteria of five-stars standard resort. From the beginning, I found out that the riverside area was charmed by abundance of trees. Therefore, I started to plan the hotel functions by using the concept of responding to the river as the first priority. Furthermore, the architectural space having to design conserved and reflected the wisdom of Chiangmai’s arts and architectures.

Hand-drawing graphic presentation has shown a value of drawing as a crafting art. Mr. Mathar Bunnag believes that the design should not only be presented for the purpose of architectural understanding, but also for the value of crafting art. This kind of presentation is not easy to be done, it takes much longer time and much more patience to complete the production.
