The Team

Introduction

Editor’s Note Our Team Publisher Tommy tommy.yap@onlinemag.dailylifestyles.com

Hello and welcome to another issue of DailyLifestyles.com Online Magazine. Hot on the heels of the Online Magazine launch in April, DailyLifestyles took over a studio a few weeks after, making April a very hectic month indeed.

In the motoring department, The Chevrolet Aveo sparked our interest as a very affordable ride for the young executives who aspire for something a little extra over the regular offerings of our national car.

In the midst of all the hustle and bustle, we introduced scuba diving to some curious forum members, and had our usual food trips. For the travelers in you, we bring you some snippets from Thailand, and Bangkok Motorshow.

Enjoy your read! And as always, do drop by our forum to mingle, interact, and share in your daily lifestyles experiences.

The Giant Panda’s Statement GLOSSARY

Sawadee Khup… How are you? It was definitely a busy 43,200 minutes in April with loads of surprises. First and foremost I must thank the readers of our 1st issue of Dailylifestyles online Magazine. We hit a 1,000 downloads within the first 10 days and peaked at almost 2,000 downloads for the whole month. It was a testament to the whole team's tireless effort in putting together another issue of magazine in 600 hours, (not exactly all of it, we all work full time. Minus the sleep and feeding time…) wow I think we put together the magazine in less than 200 hours. What came as another surprise to us was our new baby, Our Dailylifestyles Studio. Yes , we bought over a studio and now we have a permanent base for our wee hour of the night meetings and no more McDonald’s sessions. In between juggling completion of the May issue of the online magazine and preparation of the Official Opening of the Studio, we went for our food outings. I guess you can picture Panda that eats constantly… Having said that, we looked into comments that help us improve our online magazine. Wishing you readers another fun time salivating over our food features or our new toys and gadgets feature. I hope we have brought you an entertaining month of April and do enjoy our May issue. Giant Panda had a good time meeting the Lion Dance on our studio opening day. I leave you with this ... Be careful what you set your heart on, for it will surely be yours. - Emerson, Ralph Waldo

I

have anticipated this day for a very long time. My destination : Bangkok, where I have only visited once before this. I was disappointed when I learnt that my flight was delayed. 3 hours later, the impressive new international Bangkok airport with its modern design greeted me. My initial plans to have dinner with my parents was replace with only a quick bite. Then it was off to bed for a good night’s rest for the day ahead.

City of Colours

Bangkok

The next morning, the first thing on my mind was Chatuchak Weekend market, a place where you can find almost anything. From books to clothes to plants, furniture and even pets. But first it was off to a local hawker restaurant where I had a piping hot bowl of noodles as well as a nice hot cup of freshly brewed coffee, something you do not see at this kind of hawker centre.

At night, I had a very interesting dinner, the Chao Phraya river cruise dinner which costs 1000 Baht per head. The cruise departed the River City Shopping Complex and cruises pass many historical architectures and monuments like Wat Arun and The Grand Palace of Wat Pra Kaew. I took in the sights while enjoying dinner. And as we dined, we were entertained by a live band.

After my hearty breakfast, I proceeded to Chatuchak Weekend market. The market takes up 35 acres and consists of about 15,000 shops. It is indeed a shopping paradise. But be wary as you can easily loose you way. There used to be a clock tower where it can be seen from anywhere within the market and was commonly used as a meeting point. Getting to the market is rather easy. You can either take the BTS skytrain and get off at Mor Chit Station or take the MRT and get off at the Chatuchak Park Station.

I took it easy the following day and relaxed. I only went for prayers at the oddest shrine. Situated outside Central Departmental Store, it was built by the complex itself and is one of the most famous shrines in Bangkok Central. Next to it is Central World Plaza, a huge 330,000 square meters, 8 stories complex housing over 300 stores. Another shopper’s paradise. I only spent a little while at the complex and headed back for some rest in anticipation of the next day’s event.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is my next destination located 80 kilometers southwest of Bangkok. I hired a taxi which costs me 1500 Baht to take me to the market and ferry me around nearby places.

The journey to the market took 1.5 hours, reaching the market at 9am, which is the best time to visit the market. There is a similar but smaller market nearby so do ensure that you are taken to the right place.

While on the way back, the taxi driver recommended to me the Thai Human Imagery Museum, a wax museum where you can see figurines of famous Buddhist monks, former Monarchs of Chakri Dynasty as well as cultures and literature of Thailand. Apparently it took a team of Thai artists 10 years of hardwork and studies lead by Master Artist Duangkaew Phityakornsip. The museum opens from 9am till 5.30pm. The next day I went to MBK or Mah Boon Krong, a shopping centre in Bangkok which is easily accessible by BTS skytrain where you can use the skybridge to get to MBK. It feels somewhat like Sg. Wang Plaza back in KL. It was built back in 1986 and houses a myriad of products. Nearby is the infamous Siam Paragon, an upmarket shopping complex housing about 300 high-fashion boutiques and even an exotic car gallery where you can shop for Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Maseratis and even luxury yachts. Siam Paragon also has a 1,800 seat opera house, 15-screen cinema and a bowling alley.

08

On the way, you can see endless fields of raw salt, which is rather interesting as it is not near the seaside. Reaching the jetty, I bought a boat ticket costing me 100 baht which will take me through the market. I noticed that most vendors were elderly women dressed in ‘moh-hom’, a traditional collarless long-sleeved shirt and trousers with flat bamboo hats. Their boats are typically filled with tropical fruits, dried shrimps, fresh seafood, spices and cooked food. The entire market is very colourful and is a sight to behold, making this an unforgettable experience.

The next day saw me visiting two historical temples situated in the heart of the city, Wat Phra Kaeo (Temple of Emeral Buddha) and Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha). A 250 Baht ticket to enter Wat Phra Kaeo also includes access to the Grand Palace, Royal Thai Decoration, Coin Museum as well as the Vimanmek Mansion Museum. It is important that you dress appropriately, for example long pants. The museum does have a loan service which is free but you would need to place a 100 Baht deposit.

After the colourful floating market, I proceeded to Samphran Elephant Ground and Zoo which is about 30 minutes away. It opens from 8am till 6pm and will cost you 500 baht which includes plenty of shows like human crocodile, magic shows and elephant shows. You can call and check the show schedule before hand to ensure that you do not miss them.

Once you enter Wat Phra Kaeo you would be in awe of its magnificent architecture comprising of countless delicate carvings and decorations, a true treasure house of Thai arts. This temple is home to the Phra Kaew Morakat (Emerald Buddha), the most revered Buddha image in Thailand. It is carved from a single block of jade. Connected to the temple is the Grand Palace, the Royal capital since 1782. The palace was built as the residence for the Chakri kings but is now mainly used for royal ceremonies and state occasions.

www.dailylifestyles.com

Paying another 50 Baht for a ticket, I entered Wat Pho Temple. Here you are not restricted to a dress code. It is the oldest and largest temple in Bangkok and is also known as Wat Chetuphon. Its main attraction is the reclining Buddha which spans 46 meters and over 15 meters high. The Buddha is covered in gold with mother of pearl forming the 108 signs of Buddha on the feet. Here is also the headquarters for the Traditional Medicine practitioners of Bangkok. After visiting so many places and exposing myself to so much culture, I return to Kuala Lumpur, feeling very tired but very satisfied. I would recommend Bangkok to anyone who loves colourful culture and tradition.

Food

Food

I was never a crab person. The thought of having to crack open the shell and painstakingly dig out the flesh is not very appealing to me. So instead, I would just enjoy the gravy of the crab dish, usually sweet and sour gravy. Wonderful if you soak it up with fried ‘mantou’. However, all changed when I was introduced to ‘Ham Dan Crab’. ‘Ham Dan Crab’ or crab cooked with salted egg yolk, is usually the dry type without gravy. However, I have heard of a variant of the ‘Ham Dan Crab’ which comes with rich thick sauce. Maybe another food hunting trip soon? Anyway, back to the crab, the salted egg yolk compliments the crab dish very well. The egg yolk sticks to the outer shell of the crab, but at times it will find its way into the flesh through cracks in the shell.

The topic of ‘Ham Dan Crab’ was brought up during one of our outings. Immediately a date was set and it was on! We met up at Terminal 3 and proceeded to the Kwai Lam Restaurant located in Kg. Subang. Parking is a little tricky so go early. Otherwise you would have a good walk to and from the restaurant. It gets rather crowded as well, another reason to be early.

Sinfully Delicious

We ordered their signature dishes which includes the infamous ‘Ham Dan Crab’, fried chicken wing, ‘Hokkien mee’, fried ‘tang hoon’ and some other vegetables. The star of the day was obviously the ‘Ham Dan Crab’. Other dishes include fried ‘sotong’, sweet and sour crab, ‘lala’ and grilled fish.

Kg. Subang ‘Ham Dan Crab’

Cooked to perfection with the egg yolk clinging on to the shell, the proper way of eating the ‘Ham Dan Crab’ is to firstly lick the egg yolks off the shell, then only you start to crack the shell open, revealing the soft succulent flesh inside with some egg yolk residue which made its way in through the cracks and openings. The crab is best savoured without any seasoning as the salted egg yolk goes very well with the crab meat.

We dined like kings and queens and paid RM28 each for the heavenly feast. www.dailylifestyles.com

Outing

Outing It is a very different world when we were at the deep end. Although just about 8-9 feet deep, it is a whole other world where the only sound you hear is the sound of your Darth Vader-like breathing. It was a little awkward at first to move around with the scuba gear but after a while, we were having fun exploring this new sensation with some of us doing acrobatic stunts like going upside down. And all the while under the watchful eyes of two experience rescue divers. It was definitely a good outing with a good turn out. Everyone should at least experience the underwater breathing sensation. Will there be another try out? Judging from the response and feedback, there will definitely be more to come.

E

ver wondered how it would be like to breathe underwater? How is it like to remain submerged for an extended period of time? These were the questions which prompted DailyLifeStyles to organize a scuba diving try out at a local scuba dive pool.

A

New World Discovered Scuba Diving

So one early morning, after a hearty dim sum breakfast, we proceeded to the dive pool. And with the morning sun shining upon the clear blue pool, I could not help but jump in as soon as I can while Tommy readied the scuba gear. The rest were still lingering about around the pool, but you cannot blame them, I am a sucker for playing around in the water, especially when there is a water scooter available. The scooter is a whole new story by itself so let’s keep to the scuba try outs.

While the rest were trying to break their own ice, some were already in the pool. Tommy, our very own certified scuba instructor introduced the scuba gear to us, and with the help of Steven, our very own rescue diver we put on the gear. The tank is not too bad when you are in the water. It felt more like a backpack. The fins were the ones I was not used to, often tripping myself. After all of us were ready, we were briefed on the basics of the scuba gears, how to use them and how not to use them. Then Tommy proceeded to ensure that we understood the basic hand signals and ensuring basic underwater maneuvers like how to clear your mask and how to retrieve our regulators should we loose it. Although we were only in a pool, but safety always comes first. Soon, we were on our way to the deep end.

a fresh new

I have to admit that I did not like the Chevrolet Aveo at all. The new Chevrolet Aveo Notchback however, is a totally different story. When I first got news that we have a doing an Aveo, I was not too enthusiastic about it. But when I first set my eyes on the car, it was love at first sight. Of course one cannot compare to other cars which cost double. It’s like comparing a chicken-rice at a shopping mall with one you just had at your friendly neighborhood hawker centre. Two totally different experiences.

Back to the new Aveo, it now has a rear end which comes with more than ample boot space for your short trip to the beach. At least this time you have got space for your big black tyre float. The exterior is fresh looking and would appeal to many, especially the younger generation. Probably aimed at younger executives, it is priced competitively and many would be able to afford it.

Sitting in the Aveo is rather comfortable with the seats hugging you. And typical of a Chevrolet, when you close the doors, ambient noise is reduced drastically. The one thing I like about this car is that it comes with an arm rest which is installed at the driver seat. And the car comes with power-everything; power windows (all four), power side mirrors and power boot release. Most of the interior is either fabric or plastic. Driving the Aveo is fun. It is nippy. That is the word for it. It just glides and zooms along at a very nice pace. The new Aveo’s steering is also nicely weighted. And as mentioned previously, the car is quiet. NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) is kept to the minimum. So you will feel like you are floating around in the car. Hit the open highway and the car struggles to keep up with the other cars. A 1.5 ton car being lugged along by a 1.4 Liter engine will not bag you any land speed records. However, it does still keep pace and able to hit the speed limit fairly easily.

16

www.dailylifestyles.com

The car comes with a 1.4 Liter DOHC engine with 16 valves mated to a 4 speed automatic transmission. The engine generates 94bhp at 6200rpm which is more than adequate to zip you around town. Oh yes... and I just love the gated gear lever, reminiscent of a higher priced German car.

Where else can you find under one roof, the immense number of beautiful models being paraded on pedestals, rotating stages with stage lights and strobe lights alike. Visitors armed with the latest digital cameras, ranging from the compact point and shoot to the latest Digital SLR cameras the size (and weight) of a healthy ripe coconut flashing away and jousting for the best angle to photograph the models on display. And yes, the cars are amazing too.

The 29th Bangkok International Motor show started from 28th March till 6th April 2008. The Exhibition was held at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Center (BITEC) and with 80baht it will get you entry to see the cars, motorbikes, In-Car Entertainment (ICE), Accessories and last but not least Brand Ambassadors. This year, we see the industry honouring Mother Earth as the theme was called The Environmental Auto Globalisation. The concept was Friendly, Clean and Green. Food

Personality - Melvin Foo A Panda eats constantly to get nutrition, I constantly eat to keep up the cravings. Well, I was at home on Sunday. After dinner watched some TV and my stomach decided to start a concert. Thinking of food I rolled myself out of the sofa and crawled into the kitchen. Opening the refrigerator I had a look what can I whip up in 10 minutes that is hot and good. Even when being hungry I still am picky about what I’m going to eat. I see some chicken and lettuce. Aha! I had an idea. My recipe goes like this:

I

t is not everyday that you find someone who is technically inclined and at the same time artsy. Meet Melvin Foo. During the day, and at times through the night, he is a project and operations manager. Other times, he can be seen totting his trusty digital SLR camera around capturing various scenes from people to scenery right down to the enlarged world of macro photography.

His works of art can be found in his forum which he and some friends set up some 3 years back. Within these 3 years, Photokaki.com has grown into one of the largest photography-based forum in Malaysia. He started it out of his passion for photography. He and a group of similarly passionate people wanted to provide a better place for sharing and promoting photography. A quick check into the forum reveals that there are a lot of activities within the forum, with many readily wanting to share and Melvin will continue to keep that up in the forum.

Melvin’s typical day consists of him answering and making lots of phone calls and attending meetings. That is when he is not replying or sending emails. Typical of a project manager. And if time permits, he will check into his forum. He is also a romantic. He spends his free with his other half. What a lucky girl. Besides that he plays golf as well as futsal. And when at home, he surfs the Internet while listening to music or he watches TV or ASTRO. His love for photography started about 5 years ago when he was working for a camera shop. As if surrounded by the latest camera offerings is not enough, a good friend of his gave him his first camera, a Nikon F90X and a Lomo LCA. Both cameras are still with him.

My Chicken-

(depends on how much u want to eat) Fresh Lettuce : 3 or 4 leaves Olive oil – 2 table spoon Salt – a pinch of salt for taste

1

22

www.dailylifestyles.com

Cut the chicken breasts to cubes and put them into a bowl. Add olive oil, salt, thick & light soya sauce into the bowl and mix the chicken together in the bowl and let it marinate for a couple of minutes.

2

Thick Soya sauce – 1 teaspoon Light Soya sauce – 1 ½ teaspoon Black pepper Coarse – sprinkle on the chicken Garlic salt (if you have) – about 1 teaspoon

Fire up the stove and heat up the pan real good, then add in a dash of olive oil. Once the pan is heated, put the chicken cubes in and fry them in medium flame for about 3 to 5 minutes (or until chicken is cooked). While waiting for the chicken to cook, you may tear or cut the lettuce leaves to nice sizes where you can wrap the chicken in. Lay out the lettuce leaves on a plate Once the chicken is cooked, allow the chicken to cool and then place it on the lettuce.

This dish is best served with chilled drinks like beer or soft drinks. I ate all my snack in less than 5 minutes. Real delicious! I wonder when my wife is going to ask me to go on a diet but until then I will still explore my midnight snacks.

Who is PhotoKaki.com

CEO?

Melvin loves new things. He loves new experiences, eye opening experiences. As such, he has not much preference when it comes to traveling as well as food. As long as they are good destinations and mouth watering food, he is game for it.

Melvin plans to continue to promote photography through photokaki.com. In fact, they are currently working on some mini projects. We look forward to the mini projects from Melvin and all the best.

Personality - Jess Chong

Jess Chong

Power House

My first encounter with Jess was at a ‘Bak Kut Teh’ restaurant one fine morning. She was then new to our group and thus quite shy at that time. It was in no time at all that she opened up and revealed her boisterous self.

Just for the record, Jess is an ardent fan of Manchester United. I had a hard time trying to convince her that 22 men (23 if you take into account the referee) chasing after one ball is not much fun.

As for travel, she has only been to Bali, but would be going to Phuket soon. Her other destination is Mataking, the one place I would love to go but due to budget, I can only make do with the photos she would bring back from the diving haven.

Barely out of her teens, Jess has numerous experiences under her belt. Mostly she dances at various functions and parties. Besides the passion for dancing, she loves it as it allows her to express herself. Plus it is also a stress and energy outlet for her.

While she was enjoying her ‘roti telur bawang’, she stopped mid way and declared that she would not touch diary products. Anything else she is game for. But if she has to choose between Asian food or Western food, I did not even have to finish my question when she cut in and said that it is Asian food for her anytime and she needs her daily dose of rice to keep her energy level up.

To end, she describes herself as ‘someone who loves lifes and lives it to the full’. Hats off to you Jess for your accomplishments at your tender age. All the best in your future undertakings.

Born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Jess likes to term herself as a KL Chick instead of city slicker. So what does this KL Chick do during Chinese New Year since she do not have to do an exodus like the rest of us? Well, she either eats, sleeps or watches TV. And when she gets bored of eating, sleeping and watching TV, she plays with Mei Mei, her mix-breed pet doggie. Jess is also very into TV series, American Next Top Model being her favourite followed by Heroes, Grey’s Anatomy and One Tree Hill.

hy invest in PROPERTIES. Most people work for money. In Property Investment it’s the money that works for you and it’s also one of the safest way to invest. Most people agree that buying an investment property is a good investment, but many don't know where to start, who to turn to for advice, or they are afraid of doing the wrong thing so they do nothing. There are few options as rewarding and secure as buying into an investment grade commercial property which may seem out of reach to smaller investors from a distance but if you take a closer look the combination of which creates a truly passive investment with significant advantages.

Gadget & Toys - Izzi wireless

Unlike property, which is a good way to hedge against inflation, ie. Property prices and rentals increase with inflation, physical money kept in the bank is actually loosing it’s value. A simple illustration would be purchasing a house 20 years ago would cost RM100,000. That same house today would cost RM 250,000. If you had the 20% deposit to purchase and did not purchase the property and deposited it into the bank at 7%, today you would have proximally RM80,000 as appose to RM250,000 if the property was sold and if we do the math on the rental obtain to that of interest on the RM80,000 cash, I’m sure you know which one will prevail. The incredible advantage of appropriate leverage (making capital gains from borrowed funds) offers, the benefits of rent return and the significant capital growth achievable over time . It is not unusual for ordinary investors to accumulate four or more properties over 10 years – and the financial flexibility and cash flow outcomes can be exceptional, giving you piece of mind not to mention the possibility of retiring or taking it easy earlier. Property allows you to leverage. With only RM20 000 cash invested (plus around RM10, 000 upfront costs) it is possible to invest in a RM200,000 property, making your earning potential greater. Your Tenant paying the rent which in use to pay of the loan over a period of time is indirectly working for you to pay off your debt. At the end of the day the property is fully paid. Properties Izzi’s iBurst Wireless

Broadband Solution Izzi’s iBurst Wireless Broadband Solution, a big word for some including myself when it first launched. Being technology chaser, I thought what the fuss was all about and had to satisfy the curiosity itch. I went to the local dealer and asked how this device functions from our normal broadband we use in the house. After much explanation, this is broadband without the wire. I was so thrilled to hear this, as I cannot sit down in the office the whole day and when I’m on the move I always like to stay connected (signs that tells me I’m addicted). I always have to search for a free hotspot but I still had to purchase a drink. Not so free after all. So I purchased one unit and registered myself for an account. They had a 7 days return guarantee if it does not meet your expectation. (Terms and conditions applies of course). And like a little kid with a new toy, I went home immediately to test it out.

Being myself I’ve always tested my gadgets to the limit. It says in the website that it can be use while in a moving vehicle. Boys being boys, I tested the statement. I had my friend drive the car around Kuala Lumpur town area, while I surf the net. It performed flawlessly and not once I got disconnected while my friend negotiated some of the bumpy areas and dodging the 2 wheelers. How cool is that, surfing while on the move literally. I wonder if I could use this for my next treasure hunt. The only set back about this unit is intended for outdoor use, once indoor signal strength gets lower. They have an excellent service team, any drop in performance; make the call to their support centre. They can even come to your location to carry out a signal test.
