Introduction

what is dailylifestyles.com ?

Glossary Editor’s Notes June came and went… how time flies! After the hectic two months of April and May, the dust has more or less settled at DailyLifestyles and we started looking at expanding our contents. And so…. *drummmmmrollllll* … we’re pleased to bring you a fashion spread this month to herald the start of our fashion column. Our travels bring us to just across the border up north this month – Hatyai, an affordable weekend escapade. In the food section, we looked at what is available closer to Klang Valley, and an alternative to the infamous Ampang Yong Tau Foo.

DAILYLIFESTYLES Online Magazine

For activities this month, we covered another photoshoot on a Sunday morning, this time around at Taman Tasik Perdana, otherwise also known as Lake Gardens. And in-line with our slight focus on photography, we bring you two featured personalities closely related to this field – a camera shop owner, and a make-up artist.

Publisher Tommy tommy.yap@dailylifestyles.com

We were also invited to a party – on Friday the 13th also referred to as Black Friday. A bunch of like-minded people snubbed the popular myth and decided to make that a theme for a party instead!

Editor Khai wkhai.kuah@dailylifestyles.com

So, have a good read ahead, and we hope you enjoy this month’s offering. As always, do drop by the forum to have your say.

Belacan – Shrimp Paste Tofu – Bean Curd. Made by coagulating soy milk and then pressing the resulting curds into blocks. There are many varieties of tofu, including fresh and some which has been processed in some way. It has very little flavour or smell on its own, so it can be used in various ways including in sweet savoury dishes and is often seasoned or marinated to suit a dish. lou shue fun – a kind of noodle, generally about 2-3 inches long with its mid span being thick, trickling thinner as it goes towards the end. ikan haruan – Scientific Name : Ophiocehalus Striatus. Also known as the Snakehead, the haruan is a fresh water fish and is very hardy as it has an ability to survive in the hashes conditions. Found in nearly any pond, river, paddy fields even drains and puddles. tuk-tuk ¬– Thailand’s infamous little taxis. Some 4 wheeled, others 3-wheeled.

Sambal – is a condiment or a spicy sauce often used in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore to name a few. It is made from a variety of peppers, although chili peppers are the most common. Sambal is used as a condiment or as a side dish, and is sometimes substituted for fresh chilis; it can be very hot for the uninitiated. It is available at exotic food markets or gourmet departments in supermarkets in many countries. Local version of the sambal includes belacan.

bak kut teh - Hokkien word literally meaning “meat bone tea”. ‘bak kut’ is actually the ribs. And in this Chinese dish, it is always pork ribs. In reality, ‘bak kut teh' consists of pork ribs and other parts such as lean meat, rump, tail, and ofals boiled in a herbal soup. Traditionally this concoction is boiled and served in claypots. A variation of ‘bak kut teh' found in Malaysia is ‘chi kut teh’, the same recipe cooked with chicken instead of pork to cater to or adhere to certain halal outlets.

Giant Panda’s Statement Time does fly when you have to juggle between work, other work and online magazine. At times when I wake up and not know what day it is. I guess it is the fun time of my journey in life. Sometimes we just sit in a movie for 5,400 seconds but the most important thing is to enjoy the moment. I did that by watching KungFu Panda, had a very good stomach workout – laughing to the max with the moves he has similar to me on a daily basis. This month, we have an addition to our online magazine, a Fashion Section and would take this opportunity to introduce our contributing fashion editor Trish. Collectively we spend a lot of time thinking what to do next and compiled the fourth issue of this magazine. It is a lot of fun and poke-ing each other while working. I will make it a promise to show you glimpses of behind the scenes in our next issue. The team had a wonderful trip in Hatyai and bringing to you ‘Passage to Hatyai 2008’ fashion show on the street. It was definitely a good weekend but time was very tight on our weekend getaway. My sincere apologies to all readers for the late publication of our online magazine due to having so much fun in our Hatyai trip . Happy reading I leave you with this quote, which I have been, reminding myself daily…. "All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible." - T.E. Fashion Outfits Fit for a Getaway. By Trish Charun So you made it through the wild rush. Two local airlines going head-to-head on an airfare war and you emerged winner with tickets to a weekend getaway in Bali. The excitement gets you packing early. Then you arrive at the all-important question; “What should I pack?” As much as the notion of ‘travelling lightly’ appeals to our shoulders and backbone, it has never been made at the expense of style. Dress to the occasion. Clothes should never be thrown on at random, especially when you are on a vacation. So here are some tips on putting together fashionable yet ohso-practical for beach and city getaways. Beach / Island Escapade Top Favourites: Phuket, Bali, Redang, Gold Coast. Everyone loves slipping away to an exotic island for a stressfree, books-and-Pina Colada-by-the-beach holiday. Top favourites for Malaysians include Phuket, Bali and even local Redang. Drop the heavy denim and opt for cotton shorts or khaki pedal pushers instead. Hot pants in single, dark tones work wonders paired with colourful bikini tops. Pull over a racer-back or a billowy sheer top if you prefer to cover up. Leave the jeweled thongs for the BBQ by the beach at night and go have fun in the water with bright flip flops instead. In case you meet a rich tycoon who insists on buying you sunset dinner, don’t forget to pack a light cotton mini dress and matching chunky necklace. My 10 Must-Haves: A pair of hot pants in black, a pair of bikinis in bright block shade, a racerback tee, jeweled thongs, colourful flip flops, a cotton baby doll mini dress, an oversized slouchy tote, Aviator

FASHION

City Frolicking. Top Favourites: Paris, Melbourne, Hong Kong, Bandung, Bangkok. Most people on a city holiday opt for sneakers or equally practical shoes. You want to see all of Rome in one day. You want to raid all of Mongkok’s bargain hunts so you quickly figure that you need to dress for a marathon. Wrong. For city holidays, cute ballet flats should make the top of your to-pack list. Choose your most favourite pair of jeans and throw in about three pieces of your most favourite tops. Have one of each; a slinky top for a night out, a tank top for a day out bargain-shopping and a chic, printed blouse for visits to the posh museums and gallerias. My 10 Must-Haves: A pair of dark denim, a satin camisole top, tank tops in bright block shades, a snug cropped jacket, pointy flats (go from night to day), a spacious leather hobo, vintage-like accessories, oversized sunnies, a silk pashmina and a sleek camera. Have fun travelling chic!

Food Yong Tau Foo. Somewhere in the labyrinth of Pudu, nestled between shoplots, is Yap Hup Kee Restaurant. You can choose to sit outside and take in the constant buzz of people ordering their Yong Tau Foo and waiters screaming orders while constantly smelling the salivating aroma of fried Yong Tau Foos. Or you might want to enjoy your food in the comfort of the air conditioned section. Yong Tau Foo literally means ‘stuffed tofu’. The first version is basically tofu stuffed with fish paste. Quite a bright idea to liven up the bland tofu with meat. As time goes by, the newer generations began stuffing meat paste into various vegetables and even fried fritters, although the name Yong Tau Foo is still used to describe food prepared in a similar manner. So back to our excursion to the infamous Pudu Hakka Yong Tau Foo. Each of us drove our own cars because we had to split up and go our separate ways later on. So we slithered through inner roads of Pudu and found parking rather easily as there is an open air car park nearby. Ordering is simple, they have laid out all the varieties of Yong Tau Foo for you. You just have to grab a plate and tongs, then you pick and choose whatever you want or able to stuff yourself with, and you hand it over to the attendant, telling him/her how you like it – either fried or with soup. Special orders are available but only upon request. Apparently the fried intestine is a delicacy, but I am not much of a spare parts person so I shall just take our chief photographer’s word for it. You must also try their claypot ‘lou shue fun’. We had our fill and our bill added up to about RM20 per person. It may seem kind of pricey, but considering the amount of food we had, it is not too bad. Go have a try, and feed us back with your opinion. And if you have a better place for Yong Tau Foo, please do let us know.

Motoring SportyLuxury The Toyota Altezza – I cannot seem to put a finger to it. Is it a performance car? Or a family sedan? When I first set eyes on it, I got that exact mixed feeling. It sits low. Its large 17 alloy wheels accentuate the curves which flow from the front all the way to the back, leading you to its menacing rear lights. And the large diameter exhaust tip beckons to challengers on the road. Yet, it has four doors. And to confuse me even more, the fit and finishing simply screams luxury.

17 DAILYLIFESTYLES

DAILYLIFESTYLES 18

So it has the looks to play the part. It also has enough doors to be family oriented. So what else does it have? Well, the first thing you will notice when you open the door is its built quality. This car is fit together so well, it can put to shame some of the other luxury cars. Inside, fit and finish is very good. It’s very well put together and the interior is rather unique, especially the dashboard. I especially like the way Toyota positioned the manual override for the autobox. Two pairs of button on either side of the steering wheel. One in front, one located directly behind. What they are for? They are for during those times when you want to play Michael Schumacher. Press the back or front button to upshift and downshift automatically. Of course these button are only available in the auto shift versions. The seats are huggy yet comfortable. Just enough bolsters to hold you in place when you take the back roads up Genting. The driver gets a very nice sitting position with good overall view out the car. Rear passengers have enough space if the front two fellows do not push the seat back to the maximum. We took a quick spin around a newly opened curvy road nearby and the car proved to be a very comfortable car indeed. But it still has enough grunts to push you back into your seat as you floor it. The engine pulls willingly up to its red line. However, you have to be careful as you enter a turn. If you floor it as you take the turn, the tail will then start to slip. So unless you are some tofu seller’s son, try not to do that. This current version of the Altezza has been succeeded by a newer model. But it still holds its value and they are rather difficult to come by, a nice one at least. So if you are looking for a nice sporty executive car with enough doors to put in your in-laws in for that quick dash to the Sunday market, look no further. The Toyota Altezza is the car for you.

Personality interview He owns and operates YL Camera in Pudu Plaza. His shop is usually filled with people looking for the best bargains in terms of used equipment as well as brand new ones. Here in YL Camera, you will be able to find rare items like medium format cameras, old but wonderful lenses as well as brand new items ranging from point and shoot consumer cameras to professional digital SLR cameras. You need not worry about stocks. Behind his shop counter are stacks and stacks of brand new items ready for their new owners. Desmond’s love for photography started when he was in secondary school where he joined various photography clubs. There he met many more experienced photographers and he picked up pointers and improved himself. The first camera he used was the Nikon Mat which he borrowed from a friend. His very first camera was the Nikon F601 which he got when he was just 17. At that age, I was more interested in the girl next door and could only afford the latest slingshot and a box of marbles. During every weekend, when my friends and I would be fishing for ikan haruan by the monsoon drain or probably asleep till lunch, Desmond is out and about with his camera, capturing photos of whatever interests him. Apart from photography, he is also able to whip up a mean meal. His signature dish will be his chicken curry. I hope we will be able to savour his signature dish soon *hint hint*. At the age of 23, when I was still dreaming of the Honda Civic while hanging on to dear life on the way to work in a mini bus, he started YL Camera with a partner but went solo about 5 years later. His shop back then was a little one situated below the escalator. When business got better, with more stocks and showcases, he moved to the current shop.

Desmond loves to travel and have been many places including China, India, Cambodia, Thailand as well as Egypt. When asked which was his favourite, he mentioned India. During his travel to India, he was using positive film like the Velvia and Provia which brings natural colours out. And India was colourful. Yes, Desmond is one of the few from the film days. These days the excitement of seeing your photographic works is no longer there. Each click, you see the result immediately. After each travel, he and a group of friends would gather with suitcases filled with slides and take turns showing them on the projector. Ah... the simple pleasures of non-hi-tech stuff. Lifestyles The party is organized by a group of like-minded young working executives to foster greater ties amongst themselves on top of being a good stress-reliever. The Black Party is one of the many parties they have put together. Previously they had many other parties, some themed, some casual. Usually held at one of their residence, the parties often go on till the crack of dawn. Back to the Friday the 13th Black Party – everyone turned up in black from head to toe. I am not too sure about the rest of the garment, but the rest are black. The ladies were kind of excited when we walked in with our big equipment and demanded that we used it on them. So we took out our camera equipment and started photographing them. . But w-hy wait for these occasions to have a reason to hold a party? This is what a group of likeminded people had in mind all these while. What is interesting is these people are holding a Friday the 13th Black Party. But hold on to your knickers, as a big surprise awaits us at the party.

T h e

D a r k

The big surprise hit us when we were presented with a plate of fried worms. Yes! You read it correctly – fried worms. And to top it up, they served fried sambal crickets as well. The fried worms were actually not too bad. Light and crunchy. You can actually add them as a topping to a pizza. The sambal cricket on the other hand, is not to my personal liking. The fried worms were very much better, probably because I like deep fried stuff more. Usually their parties will linger on into the wee hours of the night, but we had other stuff to do. So we excused ourselves early, much to the disappointment of our gracious host as we were not as intoxicated as he would like us to be. A nice bunch of friendly people they were. We were told that a retro party is in the works. We look forward to your parties. Maybe a nice little get-away or have some heavenly food the next time around.

P a r t y

We all like parties. We have birthday parties, wedding parties, promotion parties and full moon parties among others.

Personality interview MUAs (Make Up Artists) are charged with the tasks of making ordinary people look good, good looking people beautiful, and beautiful people gorgeous. We managed to catch up with Kassie, one of our in-house makeup artists to get a glimpse of her world. Kassie is a senior MUA at Pick-A-Brush Workshop which handles the makeup for Astro Talent Quest, among its many other high profile portfolio. She started learning makeup at Pick A Brush in 2003, and has been with them ever since. Among the more prominent jobs in her portfolio include Astro Talent Quest; Astro’s Go Go Trendy; Astro’s i-e News, makeup for numerous fashion spreads in Sister Pictorial; V-Mag; nu-you brides, makeup for TVCs such as Astro’s ‘Hua Hei Tai’, Perodua, makeup for fashion shows such as the annual Raffles La Salle Design Institute’s graduation night; Aldo; MNG; naf naf; Calvin Klien, make up for events such as odm Pink Party 2007 and L’Oreal Hairshows. When we caught up with her over a late dinner, she just finished work at Estee Lauder’s Model Search 2008 roadshow. So be it celebrities, models or ordinary people, she’s no stranger to making people look beautiful. Kassie boasts no hobbies or grand escapades – her favourite pastime it seems are eating and catching up on her beauty sleep. And she is a big fan of desserts – as rich and sweet as they come. Top on her list is crème brule, followed closely by caramel cheese cake, warm chocolate cake, strawberry strudel, and strawberry soufflé. Her favourite foods are Thai and Italian. She recommends Blue Dragon Thai Food Café in Cheras for Thai food, and loves their Tomyam, Pineapple Fried Rice and Butter Chicken. For a good hearty Italian meal, she’s a fan of Michelangelo’s at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. The best, she reckons, is the Red Wine Braised Wagyu Beef to be found at Nero Vivo located on Jalan Ceylon in the heart of town. On the topic of travel, Kassie does a yearly pilgrimage to Hong Kong where she shops for clothes, nick-knacks, and what else but makeup and cosmetics not found on Malaysian shores, such as Smashbox, nars, ipsa and Kesalan Patharan. And a visit to Hong Kong is not complete without indulging in her favourite strawberry strudel at Strawberry Forever Desert Café located in Harbour City, Tsim Tsa Tsui! Besides Hong Kong, Kassie has also travelled to Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Vancouver and Peking. And on the list of destinations she would love to visit are Japan, Taiwan, Korea, and Europe. Her dream vacation spot? Maldives, where clear turquoise waters beckons invitingly to one for a cool refreshing dip.

Travel To make things worse, as I was shifting house, I was also shifting oďŹƒce. So I was looking forward to my short weekend break to Hatyai. A group of us decided to take a luxury coach over driving and ying. Flying would mean hours of waiting and extra cost of taxi to the airport. Driving would leave us tired and exhausted. So we chose to lay back and relax in the wide comfortable seat of our 18-seater luxury coach. I am not sure about the rest, but I slept like a baby all the way to the checkpoint and further up north till Hatyai town itself. There were 12 of us and we made prior arrangements for our transportation around Hatyai. You may choose to take the local tuk-tuk to get around town or to tourist destinations if you have a smaller group of people. There are also motorbike taxis if you prefer a more airy mode of transport. Waiting for the bus at menara maybank

Last Stop before going to Thailand ( our Team isDAILYLIFESTYLES hiding somewhere in the pic-1 ture try to spot it)

First on our agenda was of course breakfast. The driver, whom we all called Uncle, brought us to a nearby shop where they served one of the best tasting Bak Kut Teh I have tasted. After being well fed, our next stop was Hatyai Park, as check in at the hotel was at noon. Hatyai park is situated on a hill, where you can view the entire Hatyai town. Breath-taking view I would say. For the more religious, there are three temples up on this hill; Four-Face Buddha, Golden Buddha and Kuan Yin Temple. I do not know if we had good timing, but we got the opportunity to watch a traditional Thai dance performance with the dancers in full costume. Maybe they perform every day. But I had a good time enjoying the dance performance as it was my first time seeing such a performance up close.

We met back at the hotel again where I had my first shower of the day. After a whole day of travelling and walking around hills and all around town, I drew a piping hot bath and soaked my sticky and weary body. But only for a short while as the ladies had an appointment with the spa while we men also had our own appointment, with a fashion gala at a nearby shopping centre cum hotel. We met back again at the hotel and proceeded to stuff ourselves silly with glorious food. We decided against heading to the a club for some Saturday night action, but decided against it after one of us got a little sick, while the rest were rather low on power juice. Plus the fact that we had to be up and operating within the next 24 hours is not too appealing for us to let our hair down and boogie down till the wee hours of the morning. Maybe the next upcoming trip. So stay tuned.

There are shops and stalls selling all your prayer needs. From joss sticks to burning oil and even birds for you to release as well as firecrackers. More importantly for me, you can get chilled fresh coconuts to quench your thirst. Nothing like downing chilled fresh coconut juice under

the hot sun. It only costs you 200Baht to 250Baht. We hurried back to the hotel to check in and immediately headed off for lunch. We shall leave the food part out for the time being as it would be a whole section by itself. Anyways, Hatyai is best known, among other stuff, for its shopping. And while the ladies trotted off looking for best buys and deals, the guys went on our own way, hunting for the elusive accessories for our toys. You may also find quite a number of electronic stores around town, giving you not only the best deals, but also some items you would not be able to find anywhere else. We met up with the ladies soon after and as dutiful husbands and boyfriends, the men parted ways and went with their other halves to hunt for the guys’ best deals.
