Feelings that Follow Graduation

Some may think that college will last an eternity. In reality, college is fleeting. It is a miniscule time period compared to a student’s entire life.

When the time comes for students to graduate, they may be overcome with emotions. They could be scared, unprepared, excited or sad to leave the place they dedicated years to. They might not even be able to comprehend all of the emotions they are feeling.

College helps prepare students for their future careers and for life afterward. Some

students may feel prepared for life, while others do not.

Liz Lester, a senior from Carrollton, said why she feels prepared for life after college.

“I think I’ll be OK in life after college. I’m planning to get my masters in either education or history,” Lester said. “I know housing will always be here for me if needed, which is amazing.”

Lester worked with Housing and Residence Life during her time at WKU and made many relationships with the people who work there. Beulah Cannon, a WKU alumna and

education major, felt prepared after college, even though she still had some concerns.

“I was very worried about what would come after college. Most teachers are hired during April-June,” Cannon said. “When I graduated mid-May, I had no leads when it came to employment which was quite concerning to say the least.”

Cannon now works in the education system in Webster County.

Concerns for graduating aren’t the only things that students feel when their senior year comes to a close. There are some

Colby Wiesman, an entrepreneurship major and marketing minor, graduates in December. Post-graduation, Wiesman plans to work in finance, specifically with credit repair and mortgage loans. “I’m thankful for the friends I made while I was here and how they helped me prepare for the next stage in my life,” Wiesman said. Above, Sheldon Martin, a biology major and business administration minor, holds his new puppy as he stands in front of Cherry Hall. Martin plans to get a doctorate in physical therapy at Bellarmine University in Louisville. “Something I will miss about WKU is having my best friends so close to me all the time, but I am excited to move to Louisville and make new memories with my pup, Rose,” Martin said.

feelings that do not get talked about enough because they feel like no one will understand.

Bailey Townsend, a WKU alumna, also said how she felt after graduation.

“For me, it was loneliness. I feel like we never acknowledge the fact that postsecondary life feels like a reboot button — for better or for worse. All of these routines you established? Gone. Friends that you

made? They moved across the country,” Townsend said.

Townsend said that even though change can be isolating and challenging, postgraduation support is crucial when forging a new path alone.

Graduating college can be an exciting part of life, but it can also be extremely debilitating. What every student needs to

understand is that they are not alone. If they feel scared, worried, alone or unprepared they can always talk to others about how they are feeling.

The world is a big place and it can be scary, but it doesn’t have to be. Students should take pride in everything they achieve and take every challenge with stride. Graduating is the next step in a student’s life, not the end.
