A third space is where someone spends their time outside of home and work. For students, that third space is campus. Many graduates though struggle to find their third space at first.
This is true for alumnus Isaac Perkins. Perkins graduated in May 2024, and he’s still figuring out his third space.
“It’s all a build-up in college to find a job,” Perkins said. “Once you find that job, no one’s really holding the reins except you. It’s just been a change of pace. There is a lot of free time that I have filled with family, friends and hobbies. I’ve really enjoyed it.”
Perkins enjoys the consistency of his job but struggled to fill his new free time. The change of pace has allowed him to make new connections and continue to build on old ones.
“There will be time in your day that you’re not used to having,” said Angela Jones, an English professor. “What alumni have told students is to be prepared for not having homework. A lot of students have either started or taken up hobbies they’ve done again.”
Third spaces can be “healthy” spaces, like a gym or a yoga studio. They can also be born out of convenience, like a restaurant near work.
“Another challenge that folks might face is their friend group,” Jones said. “You have a choice of how you spend your time and with whom. How much do you want to try to maintain your current friends versus make new friends? That also plays a big part in what your third spaces are.”
Third spaces can also look different depending on what someone is hoping to gain. There are spaces like coffee shops and libraries that allow for little-to-no socialization necessary, as many people choose to work or read in solitude. For a more social aspect, some spaces hold events. White Squirrel Brewery in Bowling Green hosts a sip and paint night. The Bob Kirby Branch of the Warren County Public Library has many creative spaces where they host art nights.
Jane Fife, an English professor and the director of the writing center, suggests getting involved in things on campus that can carry over to post-graduation.
“University campuses can be a catch-all for third spaces,” Fife said. “It could be a guiding light. There’s clubs and organizations, intramurals, common areas like the library and DSU. It can help you find what your third space might look like.”

Dressing to Impress
Story by Emma McGuffey | Photos by Hanna Kronfeld
Suit jackets, skirts and dresses, oh my!
Professional dress is important from your shoes to your tie, but what does it mean to dress professionally? Several business professionals have advice.
“The goal of professional dress is to create a polished appearance that reflects positively on oneself and the organization,” said Brian Ahern, a career coach for students in the Ogden College of Science and Engineering and the College of Health and Human Services. “The way you dress truly becomes your brand — how you are known inside and outside the work environment.”
Zach Marcum, associate director for
alumni engagement and philanthropy at WKU, said looking professional begins before picking out clothes.
“Start with personal hygiene — it’s the foundation of looking professional. Shower regularly; use quality soap; brush and floss your teeth, and take care of your skin,” Marcum said.
Next, graduates can build their professional wardrobe. Susan McIntyre, an accounting and financial reporting specialist for the College Heights Foundation, recommended starting with basics.
“A black pair of slacks are going to be your best friends. Start with a few pairs
of slacks, blouses, a blazer is always a nice touch, and a good pair of flats,” McIntyre said.
Ahern said choosing versatile pieces is a great first step.
“Focus on classic, well-fitting items like a blazer, dress pants and buttondown shirts. It’s important to dress for the job you want, so adapt your attire to match the company culture while maintaining a professional appearance,” Ahern said.
Megan Bailey, an academic adviser for the Mahurin Honors College and graduate student in organizational communication, suggested taking

time to learn about a job environment beforehand.
“Research where you intend to go and dress accordingly. Have interchangeable neutrals like a white button down top, and invest in good clothing,” Bailey said. “This may cost some money, but in the long run will be well worth it.”
Marcum said building a professional wardrobe doesn’t have to break the bank.
“A few well-fitting pairs of khakis or dress pants and some quality shirts from a discount retailer or thrift store are more than enough to start,” Marcum said.
When dressing professionally, Ahern emphasizes that presentation makes all the difference.
“Pay attention to the details — shoes should be polished; clothes should be wrinkle-free, and accessories should be
simple,” Ahern said.
Bailey said it is essential that the clothing makes you feel good.
“The clothes can be professional but may not be flattering. Dress for your body; that’s different for everyone,” Bailey said.
However, not all aspects of professional dress are physical. Marcum said confidence is important when selecting an outfit.
“Wearing clothes that fit well and make me feel confident creates a sense of presence and authority,” Marcum said.
Dressing professionally can go a long way in future careers, which McIntyre said starts with interview attire.
“You should always want to dress to impress during an interview process. You only have one opportunity to make a first impression, and, when interviewing for a position, you want to put your best self forward,” McIntyre said.
Ahern dsaid professional dress continues to be relevant in the workplace today.
“In many industries, how you present yourself can influence perceptions of competence and reliability, which can impact career opportunities and advancement,” Ahern said.
McIntyre said the final piece of a professional wardrobe is a positive attitude.
“As you graduate from college and make the transition to the workforce, remember to smile. While simple, it truly does have a powerful effect,” McIntyre said.

Practice Tackling Tough Interview Questions
Story by Olivia Estep | Photos by Myah Griffin
Interviews can feel like a battlefield, especially when certain questions seem to come out of nowhere. But with a little preparation, self-reflection and the right mindset, even the toughest questions can be easily tackled. Brainstorm your responses by using this sheet
Tell me about a time when you failed.
Tips: We are all human beings who make mistakes, so be honest in your response and show that you are willing to learn from the past and grow moving forward. Emphasize the lessons that you learned from this situation and how you continue to apply them today.
What are your weaknesses?
Tips: The key to this question is honesty with a positive spin. Focus on a real weakness you have and then show how you are working to improve the issue.
Louisville sophomore Audrey Leachman reflects on a tough interview question.
How do you prioritize work?
Tips: Develop a clear method of how you prioritize tasks during workdays. Make sure to include a contingency plan to show you can be flexible with shifting deadlines or unexpected tasks.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Tips: Set realistic goals within the timeline that can be connected back to the company you are applying to. Do your research and see how the company works. This shows a sense of loyalty and dedication to that specific company.
How do you handle stress/pressure?
Tips: Be honest and acknowledge that stress is natural. Emphasize your problemsolving skills and consider using a specific example of a high-stress situation that you were able to effectively manage. Point to any organizational skills that you can bring to the table.
Why do you want this job?
Tips: Show enthusiasm for the company and its goals as well as the specific job you are applying for.
Why should we hire you?
Tips: Present your most compelling case for why you are the right person for the job. Be confident in your response and highlight the value you would bring to the work environment.
