As a building type for people to read, communicate, and contemplate, a library should provide spaces with different characteristics.

By incorporating this prototypes into one building, people can have different experience depending on their need.

The design began with researching different prototypes of space relations. In each prototype, people can have eye to eye communicate w i t h e a c h o t h e r t o d i f fe r e n t extents.

Community Center Changsha, China

The site is surrounded by existing buildings with different styles and ages, ranging from the traditional residential area, high-rise, and small-scale commercial buildings. In the center of the site is some tall existing trees and a rockery landscape element which has been existing for more than 100 years, from the Qing Dynasty. The idea is by inserting a new building into the site, the appearance and living quality of the community can be improved, and also create a place for people to communicate.

The strategy begins with the urban axis. By creating a simple volume from the shape of the site and urban axis, the new building can be a focusing point o f t h e c o m m u n i t y. T h e n a n internal courtyard is created for the existing trees and rockery. Besides, the shape of the structure is responding to the view line of surrounding buildings and the flow of people.

Chinese Traditional Academy Wuhan, China

The project is located at Snake M o u n t a i n i n H u b e i Pr o v i n c e i n C h i n a , s u r ro u n d e d b y t h e Yellow Crane Tower, Baiyun Ge, Hubei old librar y, Sun Yat-sen M emor ial, Wuchang Upr ising Monument and Longhua Temple and other attractions. The area of the land is about 11,530 sq.m. Topography is complicated, and there is a significant height difference. Part of the existing buildings in the site will be demolished, and some will be restored.

Without mimicing the traditional architecture in China, the design was tr ying to express the essence of academy architecture in a modern way. The building is broken into several small-scale buildings connected by interior and exterior courtyards, creating a rhythm between nature and architecture, and without overwhelming the site. By doing this, it becomes a tour for people to visit the building.
