The Polish Federation of Camping and Caravanning (PFCC), a social organization for tourists and campsite owners, involves itself in promoting the idea of camping. For example, the Federation aims to raise the quality of service and the standards of equipment through the "Mister Camping" contest. It also cooperates with camping clubs and organizes rallies of campers and caravanners, both Polish and foreign. Camping enthusiasts who want to get a discount and be sure that they get a place at a chosen campsite can obtain the FICC Camping Pass from the Polish Federation. It is issued by the International Federation of Camping and Caravanning (FICC) based in Brussels, and distributed by national organizations. Find out more at www.pfcc.eu.

We would like to invite you to the best campsites in Wielkopolska. It is worth noting that campsites are fenced areas with a reception service, allowing you to stay in tents, caravans, trailers, motor-homes or in chalets. Campsites are equipped with sanitary kitchen and leisure facilities. The current categorization of campsites differentiates them distinctly from hotels and tent sites, and campsites scoring four stars can boast the highest quality of service.
PHOTO: Z. SZMIDT
It is summer at last. A season of holidays and days off work. Caravanning for a rest, we go to destinations with water and forests. And the Region of Wielkopolska (Greater Poland) is perfect for this. Its prehistoric glacier has left some moraine hills which have been cut through by ancient river valleys and stretches of lakes. It is here that the largest holiday resorts have emerged. But not all of us enjoy our holidays in the hustle and bustle of tourist resorts. More and more of us prefer quieter and calmer places, such as campsites. The advantages of camping are more moderate prices and, most notably, its proximity to nature. Staying at a campsite also gives us the chance to keep active, as there are many sailing and canoeing centres. The closeness of woods encourages taking walks along tourist trails and mushrooming. And the vibrant folk culture of some areas of Wielkopolska enables taking part in folk festivities and regional celebrations. Traditionally, our campsites are visited by foreign tourists, which allows them to get to know our culture, historical monuments and curiosities of nature.

MARGONIN
In Margonin's surroundings you can see some grand glacial rocks. One of them is called an "Enchanted Inn" (Zaklęta Karczma). It is 13m in circumference and lies in a field near Próchnowo. Another one of fanciful shape is called the "Enchanted Coach" (Zaczarowana Karoca), is 7.5m in circumference and lies on the edge of Atanazyn. A few interesting legends about the blocks' origin are connected with them.

If you are interested in history, you should visit a small town called Gołańcz, with an interesting Gothic castle of the Pałuk family at Smolary Lake. Also worth a visit is the former Gothic Observantine Church of Our Lady of the Angels.

Poznań
The campsite is located at Margonin Lake (215ha), in a holiday complex 700m away from the town centre. It neighbours the "Margonin" Hotel and a sports field. In Margonin, near the Old Market, there is an interesting baroque Church (St. Adalbert’s), which dates from the 18th c. On the way to Gołańcz, you can see a former estate called Margonińska Wieś with its neo-Gothic palace dating from the middle of the 19th c. It is famous for hosting Józef Wybicki, the author of the Polish national anthem. Nowadays it houses the Witold Łuczkiewicz Forest Centre. In the palace, there is the Józef Wybicki Remembrance Room and a mini museum, which was the Tradition's Room of the former Wojczyński Forest Schools. On both sides of the road there is the most impressive tree avenue in Wielkopolska. Planted in 1765, it is 1.5km long and made up of huge lime trees reaching up to 620cm in circumference.

The campsite is part of the Communal Centre for Leisure and Public Utilities (GOWiGK) in Lubasz. The campsite is located at Duże Lake (42ha) on the so called Krasna Góra hill on the edge of a range of moraine hills. Lubasz is a large communal village situated on the way from Wronki to Czarnków. It is famous for its baroque Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the middle 18th c. with its miraculous painting inside, and also being a place of many pilgrimages. The village also houses a classical palace located in an enormous scenic park – well worth seeing.

The church in Lubasz
The surroundings of Lubasz feature a diverse landscape sometimes called the Czarnków Switzerland. The edge of the valley falling steeply towards the Noteć River cut by ravines and gorges brings into sight many picturesque views. Plenty of charm characterizes the hills of nearby Goraj's and its surroundings, wooded with beech and oak. It is also the location of a neo-Renaissance castle of the Hochbergs from the early 19th c., which is currently housing the Forest Schools Complex (Zespół Szkół Leśnych). The nearby town of Czarnków, located on the slopes of moraine hills and in the Noteć River valley, is among the most beautifully situated towns in Wielkopolska. The Góra Krzyżowa Mountain overlooking the town gives you the opportunity to admire the vast panorama of the town and valley. The most precious monument of Czarnków is a Gothic Church of Mary Magdalene from the 16th c. with gilder paintings and the Czarnkowski family gravestones.

Lubiń and Cichowo are slightly further away. In Lubiń, on one of the hills towers a Benedictine abbey founded in the 11th c. It is said that Gallus Anonymus, the first Polish chronicler, was an abbot there. The neighbouring Cichowo has become a charming open-air film museum since Soplica's manor was moved there from the film set of "Pan Tadeusz", the adaptation of the Polish national epic by Adam Mickiewicz. On the way to Cichowo, you can try driving an old trolley-car on a closed railway line in Bieżyń.

Wonieskie Lake, almost 13km in length and surrounded by woods, is a venue for attractive walking and biking trails. The lake was created between 1974 and 1983 by damming up a small river called Samica Osieczyńska, flowing through 5 lakes. Nearby, in the Gryżyna village there are ruins of the Gothic Church of St. Martin from the 13th c. It is a defensive construction with walls of fieldstones. Not far away are the manors and palaces of Turew, Choryń and Kopaszewo, the latter being where Adam Mickiewicz (one of the greatest Polish poets) stayed in Wielkopolska. The palace in Racot, owned in the past by William, Prince of Orange, later the King of the Netherlands , was a residence of the President of the Republic of Poland in the inter-war period . Nowadays it houses the largest horse stud farm in Europe.

The main advantage of Boszkowo is its magnificent location among wooded moraine hills and lakes. Sailing enthusiasts are attracted by the vast Dominickie Lake, and canoeists have one of the most popular trails in Poland, the Lily-of-the-Valley Canoe Trail (Konwaliowy Szlak Kajakowy) leading along a closed circle of 37km. The lakes are connected with streams and canals of a slight gradient, which enables canoeing the Trail both directions. The beginning and the end of the Trail are in Wieleń. Nearby there is the large communal village of Włoszakowice, with the original baroque hunting palace of the Sułkowski family, built in the mid 18th c. on an artificial island. Build on the plan of a triangle, the palace houses a large event hall and currently also the Communal Office and a community centre. Music lovers should visit nearby Bukowiec Górny, a folk artwork centre with regional groups and bagpipe bands as well as folk sculptors, embroiderers and smiths.

The Sieraków Landscape Park is an area of a varied postglacial land with moraine hills and numerous lakes. A dense network of tourist trails enables you to reach the most interesting places in the Park. There are a few nature reserves. One of them, "Beeches at Lutomskie Lake" (Buki nad Jeziorem Lutomskim) is just behind the campsite fence. The best way to get to know the Park is to visit the Nature Education Centre (Ośrodek Edukacji Przyrodniczej) located in an old manor house in Chalin at Śremskie Lake. The campsite is located on the way from Międzychód to Drezdenko, in a wooded area, in the centre of a vast (21ha) "Mierzyn-Ustronie" Holiday Centre which belongs to the Międzychód Centre of Sports, Tourism and Recreation at Mierzyńskie Lake (48ha). The Centre offers an open sports and leisure base including: a supervised beach, water sports equipment rental, shops, restaurants and bars. Among the recreation events organized by the Centre are beach volleyball tournaments (Grand Prix Mierzyn), beach ball tournaments as well as contests in swimming and water sports. A huge attraction is the Strong Man Tournament. On the nearby shooting range you can also have a go at shooting.

The campsite is a good base for trips to visit neighbouring Międzychód, located next to the Warta River and Miejskie Lake. The town has an untypical urban layout consisting of three former urban formations. From the old buildings, of particular interest is Rynkowa Street, with a group of houses standing with their gable walls towards the street; currently very rare. In the vicinity of the church there is one of Międzychód's tourist attractions: an artesian water spring containing a considerable amount of hydrogen sulfide and available from a communal pump. Mierzyn is located within Puszcza Notecka (the Noteć forest), which allows for organizing various walks along wood trails and picking the abundant mushrooms there.

The Camping is located on the premises of the former Zbąszyń fortress at Błędno Lake (742ha), also known as Zbąszyńskie Lake, and is 400m away from the town centre. Zbąszyń is an old castellan fortified town with a partly intact fortress of the Dutch type with a Renaissance entrance gate from the turn of the 16th c. Near the Market Square there is a baroque Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary from the mid 18th c. with valuable interior elements. e.g. gravestones of the Garczyński family, who were the former owners of the town. An interesting example of monumental architecture is the railway station originating from the interwar period. At that time, Zbąszyń was a border station. In the centre, on the Obra River, there is a unique monument to John Paul II which shows Karol Wojtyła sitting in a canoe.

The town surroundings are perfect for tourism, especially for water sports. The Obra River flows through a chain of lakes (e.g.: Wielkowiejskie, Chobienickie, Zbąszyńskie, Lutol, Wielkie) and forms a popular canoeing route. Another curiosity of the region is the unique folklore connected with a musical instrument called the kozioł, which is a type of bagpipe. The instrument inspired the creation of the Region of Kozioł (Region Kozła), an economic and tourist association of 7 neighbouring communes. In the Market Square in Zbąszyń you can see a charming kozioł player, albeit made of bronze.

The campsite in Gołuchów is part of the Gołuchów Tourism and Sports Centre (GOTiS) at Zalew Gołuchowski Lake (51ha), which was created by damming up the Ciemna river. Next to its school, there are the Centre’s sports and leisure facilities with a court for volleyball and beach ball, a football stadium, tennis courts, a school gym and playgrounds.

Gołuchów is a popular Polish tourist and holiday centre. The castle houses a branch of the National Museum in Poznan. The Renaissance castle of the Leszczyński family, rebuilt by Izabela Działyńska in the 19th c, refers in its style to the French castles at the Loire River. It houses an exhibition of historical interiors as well as a collection of ancient Greek vessels - the so called Gołuchów vases. Around the castle and along the Ciemna River there is the largest arboretum in Poland, 162 hectares in size, with domestic and foreign trees. Among them there are a dozen unique specimens and a few hundred other types trees. The park is looked after by the Forest Culture Centre (Ośrodek Kultury Leśnej), which is a special unit of the State Forest’s national range. The Centre protects Polish forestry heritage by running the Forestry Museum (Muzeum Leśnictwa) and the Exemplary Animal Pen (Pokazowa Zagroda Zwierząt). Currently, you can see wisent and fallow deer there, as well as wild boar and konik (a small, Polish semi-wild horse).

Motorized tourists can go on a trip along the popular Kórnik Route (Szlak Kórnicki) leading through Kórnik, Bnin, Rogalin, Puszczykowo, the Wielkopolska National Park and Szreniawa to Poznań. For those who prefer walking trips and having contact with nature, there is the Bobrowy Szlak nature and education trail (with three levels of difficulty) leading from nearby Świątniki to Czmoniec. A popular tourist trail (red) of Mieczysław Orłowicz leads from Kórnik (there is a plaque dedicated to Orłowicz on the town hall) to Zaniemyśl along the valley of the lakes near Kórnik and Zaniemyśl. Those who like big cities can go 20km by road to Poznań.

Poznań
The campsite is situated on the premises of the Sports and Recreation Centre (OSiR) in Kórnik, on the so called Błonia at Kórnickie Lake (82ha). Nearby, there is a sports stadium and the Nestor Motel. The town centre is 500m away and you can reach it from the main street leading to the market square. In its centre there is a nice town hall with a rooster at the top, which is the symbol of the town. At noon you can hear the cock crowing and the bugle call of Kórnik. Attractions of Kórnik are widely known and they are worth devoting some time to. At the market square there is the so called Eye of the Needle (Igielne ucho), which is a passageway leading to a Jewish synagogue ruined during World War II. From the campsite you can go by the "Anna Maria” ship to the castle on the other side of the lake. The neo-Gothic castle houses a museum with rich collections, as well as the Polish Academy of Sciences Library in Kórnik, and is surrounded by an arboretum of the Institute of Dendrology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN). The ship's marina is next to a large car park on the so called Prowent (a former manor farm) where the Polish poet Wisława Szymborska (a Nobel laureate) was born, and there is a plaque on a building there informing us of this.

Because the campsite is near Poznań, it is a good base for sightseeing trips to the city. One way of getting to know the city is by walking the increasingly popular Kings and Emperors Route (Trakt Królewsko-Cesarski). It leads from the royal residence of the former kings Mieszko I and Bolesław Chrobry on the Ostrów Tumski island through the Góra Przemysła hill with the royal castle. Poznań was also visited by the Emperor Otto III, the current patron of united Europe, on his way to the famous Congress of Gniezno in 1000ad. Another emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte, stayed four times in the former Jesuit College. For the German emperor William II a monumental castle was built which currently houses the "Zamek" Cultural Centre. On the basis of the cultural values of the city, the route touches upon four themes: history, monuments of architecture, culture and the tradition of Wielkopolska, underlining their uniqueness across Poland. It is impossible to cover the whole Route during one day as it encompasses over 60 attractions.

The campsite is very untypical by Polish standards. It is located just outside Boguszyn village between Książ Wielkopolski and Nowe Miasto nad Wartą. It is situated in open country among farmland. The Campsite is administrated by a Dutch family. In the village, there survives the manor complex of the Sczaniecki family from the mid 19th c., relating to the romantic neo-Gothic style.

If you would like to go for a longer walk, then go to the Warta River which flows here in a vast valley with numerous bends and old river beds. Nearby Książ Wielkopolski is a small town famous for the battle of the scythebearing peasant recruits (kosynierzy) during the Springtime of Nations of 1848. There are two mounds burying the bodies of the insurrectionists. Going in the opposite direction you will get to Chocicza, with an impressive eclectic palace from the early 20th c. Going a bit further you will reach Nowe Miasto nad Wartą, a small charming town with a Gothic Church of the Holy Trinity with valuable Renaissance polychrome. Just outside Nowe Miasto is the Herman's Horse Farm (Folwark Konny Hermanów) offering horseback riding courses.

This campsite is located within the boundaries of The Baths resort, beautifully situated by the Powidzkie lake (1,036 ha). The resort has a windsurfing school and offers kayaking and sailing camps. A second resort On the Slope offers a campsite and both food and overnight accommodations. In the nearby Przybrodzin there is another resort On the Slope with a campsite, overnight accommodations, and a cafeteria. Powidz was once a royal town but now it is a relatively small county village with a well established resort. A significant area around Powidz–reaching as far as Trzemeszno and Wilczyn–comprises the Powidz Landscape Park that also protects postglacial scenery. The village with its small-town character and a market square boasts a Neo-Gothic church built in mid-19th century and the Castle Hill, a Medieval burg by the lake.

The campsite is situated on the Lipówka artificial lake (22ha), created on the small river Wrześnica. At the lake there is a beach, a restaurant and recreational area. The campsite is part of the Września Sports and Recreation Facilities. They also encompass the nearby complex of swimming pools and the amphitheatre in the Park of the Children of Września (Park Dzieci Wrzesińskich). Września is a vibrant town famous for the well-known school strike of 1901 in which 118 children protested against the compulsory learning of religion in German. Currently, the former Catholic People's School (Katolicka Szkoła Ludowa) houses the Regional Museum of the Children of Września. Next to the Museum there is the Gothic Parish Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and St. Stanislaw from the mid 15th c. with baroque interiors. The Market Square in Września is also charming with its historical tenement houses and its neoGothic Town Hall. There is also a place commemorated to the burning of four women in 1720 for doing magic. Next to the campsite you can also see another town monument - the wooden Church of the Holy Cross from the 17th c.
PHOTO: Z. SZMIDT
The neighbourhood of the town abounds in interesting monuments which you can see during short trips. Especially interesting is the huge fortification in Grzybowo dating back to the early 10th c. It is the venue of the International Rally of Slavic Warriors (Międzynarodowy Zjazd Wojowników Słowiańskich) which involves fight shows and presentations of craft. Also in Grzybowo there is an untypical cemetery chapel mirroring the early Romanesque Chapel of St. Felix and Adauctus, which is built on the Wawel hill in Cracow. Other attractions can be found in Czerniejewo and Miłosław, which boast impressive palaces in vast parks.
