Wielkopolska has been well known for its long history of stables and breeding facilities that have played a part in the development of horse breeding in Poland. The centres in Iwno, Racot, Pępowo, and Golejewko are a good example. The Stud Stable in Sieraków stands out as an important one, with its beginnings dating back to 1828! Whereas the Gostyń area is considered the centre of carriage makers. Also, in the town of Szamocin, near Chodzież, to this day it is possible to purchase a horse at a traditional horse market which has been in operation since the 19th century.

Bucz – an eclectic palace was built here at the turn of 19th and 20th centuries. It’s simple in form and sparing in decorations. Also in Bucz is an interesting St. Barbara’s wooden church, (second half of the 17th century) and next to it a wooden bell tower. Popowo Stare – a Baroque, 18th-century palace was built here by Ignacy Szołdrski and his wife. In 19th century this property, which includes over 200 ha of land and a distillery, was transferred from the German owners to the polonized family of Franciszek Ksawery Speichert. Barchlin – a manor from the end of 19th century erected by Franciszek Ksawery Speichert in the design style of a NeoRenaissance villa. Sokołowice – there is a simple, Classicist manor here that was built in the first half of the 19th century for Antoni Skarżyński.
The Białogórski Trail Wieleń Zaobrzański - Mochy or: Wieleń Zaobrzański - Wieleńskie Góry - Kaszczor Trail length: 37 km The trip may begin in the agro-tourist farm Stara Stajnia (Old Barn) in Wieleń Zaobrzański, and from there go on two routes: (1) in the direction of Mochy, or (2) through the Wieleńskie Góry and on to Kaszczor. There is an estuary called Ziemne Wody near Kaszczor where both the rider and the horse can refresh after the ride.
Przemęt Landscape Park – it was established in 1991 to preserve part of the Leszczyńskie Lake District comprising an area of 20,000 ha. Numerous post-glacial formations have formed the diversified topography of the park with various hills and sand dunes. There are 24 lakes within its boundaries, the largest of which are: Dominickie and Przemęckie lakes. This region is attractive both due to its scenery and to its culture since it boasts some outstanding relics of sacral architecture from 17th to 19th centuries, palaces and park-like gardens, as well as a traditional manor and cottages. The park includes some botanical treasures, among them: sundew, Turk’s cap Lilly, and the unique pink Lilly-of-the-valley. It is an outstanding place for bird watching including some rare bird species, among them the bearded titmouse, whose male has a characteristically black coloration around the beak that resembles a moustache. This bird’s sound is reminiscent of the bell chimes. The Lilly of the Valley Island – this is a landscape preserve on the island of the Radomierskie Lake that connects to the Przemęt Lake. Its rare springtime treasure are the fields of the Lilly-of-the-valley flowers that have pink stamen bases. Bog on the Holy Lake - this preserve on Jezioro Święte is home to some protected species of bog flora such as sundew and bog horsetail. Babulina – this is a hill with the highest elevation in the Wolsztyn district that reaches 112 meters above the sea level. Napoleon’s Chaise – this is a clay hill on which, according to legend, Napoleon took his rest while on his way to Russia. Kaszczor – a post-Cistercian church from 18th century and a 19th-century post windmill.

Racot – this late 18th-century Classicist palace and park was designed by the architect Dominik Merlini (creator of the Royal Łazienki palace in Warsaw) for the Duke Antoni Barnaba Jabłonowski. Among some Polish aristocrats and luminaries who have been hosted here are: Duke Józef Poniatowski, Tadeusz Kościuszko, and Józef Wybicki who lived nearby and who has written plays for a lively local amateur theater. In 1928, the Racot National Stable was established on the property. Gryżyna – there are some remaining ruins here of an early Gothic stone church of St. Martin that most probably was in operation until the 18th century. Wławie – in this village visitors may admire the stones decorated with unique carvings and inscriptions crated by an amateur sculptor Adolf Najeranowski. Kopaszewo – a Classicist palace of the Skórzewski family was erected around 1800. In 1831 Adam Mickiewicz paid a visit here. Another frequent guest was the actress Helena Modrzejewska, wife of Karol Chłapowski. In 1844 the estate was purchased by General Dezydery Chłapowski and from then on his eldest son inhabited and managed it. Later it was transferred to his daughter Zofia, wife of Jan Koźmian. After Zofia’s suicide in 1853, Jan Koźmian erected little chapels, stations of the cross, along the road leading from the palace to the cemetery near the Rąbiń church. That’s how the so-called Kopaszewska Road of the Cross was created leading through the fields and forests from Kopaszewo to Rąbiń and back. Mszczyczyn – the Neo-Baroque manor from the end of the 19th century located here was later expanded in the National style. It is surrounded by a large landscape park dating back to 18th century with some imposing oak trees in it. The park is a fascinating sight in the spring when it’s all aglow with the blossoms of grove ane-mones.

The trip begins by the Racot palace, and continues through Gryżyna and Wławie, and then to Kopaszewo. Next it goes through Zbęchy to Bieżyń, and ends in the Mościszki forest district ranger station.
It is well worth it to end this part of the trip in the agro-tourist farm Bajka in Ludwinowo.

Neo-Gothic style was renovated in the beginning of 19th century by General Dezydery Chłapowski. He became a historical figure through his involvement in fostering good farming management approach on his property and has thus been credited for laying the foundation for the development of modern agriculture in Poland. A former Napoelonic soldier, he learned about agriculture from the ground up at farms in other countries including France. Once he completed his foreign education, he transferred his then-new knowledge to his estate. The Dezydery Chłapowski Landscape Park, founded in 1992, has to this day retained the original agricultural landscape of that area thanks to his transformative efforts. Choryń – there is an old manor dating back to the end of the 18th century, a so-called new manor converted around 1820 from a farm utility building. Adam Mickiewicz was hosted here by Józef Taczanowski. Among its later owners was General Edmund Taczanowski, one of the military leaders of the 1863-1846 January Uprising.

Lubiń – the Benedictine monks, who were brought here in the 11th century by Bolesław Śmiały, were in Lubiń during the closing of the monastery by the Prussians in the 19th century. They were able to return there in 1923. Today’s sanctuary, built in place of earlier ones, was designed in the Baroque style in the first half of the 18th century. The 11th-century Polish chronicler Gall Anonim was probably affiliated with this monastery. The Benedictine monks of Lubiń have been well known to this day for their proprietary tincture called “The Benedictine for Seven Aches” concocted with the use of 21 herbs according to a 16th-century formula. Bieżyń – for those weary from the time spent in the saddle, we recommend a trolley ride, the Krzywiń Trolley Line, that depending on your muscle strength may take you in the direction of Gostyń or Racot. Grabonóg – this is the birthplace of the Blessed Edmund Bojanowski. Today, the local manor houses a museum bearing his name. Cichowo – the skansen here called Soplicowo has been converted from a movie set built for the filming of the movie “Pan Tadeusz” directed by Andrzej Wajda. It was designed by Allan Starski, an Oscar winner for the movie set design in “Schindler’s List” directed by Steven Spielberg. Turew – a late-Baroque palace built in the

Worth Seeing: Witosław – visitors may sample the Witosław mead and check out the power of bee products enhanced with medicinal herbs (regarded as a form of apiphytotherapy), while visiting an eclectic palace built here at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Rydzyna – a unique and one of few in Europe Baroque architectural arrangements makes up a system connecting the town with the magnate residence. The estate was the property of the Leszczyński family from the end of the 17th century until 1738. And from then on until the beginning of the 20th century it remained in the hands of the Sułkowski family. The current design of the Baroque end-of-the17th-century castle was achieved through three renovations, the most important of which was the one conducted by Martin Frantz. Jeziorki – inside the 19th-century manor that reflects the Tyrolean building style are several guest rooms. Near the manor there are also three stables because the Jeziorki centre offers horse riding lessons and other attractions. Przybyszewo – a modern conference and recreation centre has been opened in the eclectic palace from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. This facility is the property of the School of Marketing and Management in Leszno. It also includes stables and provides horse riding instruction.

Direction: Ponds, i.e., a Mounted Journey in the Valley of River Barycz
The Landscape Park of the Barycz River Valley – it is a park established in 1996 covering an area of 87,000 hectares. It is known for a preserve called the Milickie Ponds, a cluster of fish ponds that originated in the beginning of the 13th century. It has been regarded as one of the most significant marsh preserve areas with water estuaries. And it has been included in the registry of the international convention RAMSAR, as well as in the UN Living Lakes program for being one of barely ten such areas in the world. It is an excellent habitat for many bird species. Huta Stara – a Protestant church and an old cemetery are located in this village. Moja Wola – a 19th-century hunting lodge with an old park. Możdżanów – worthy of attention are: a hunting manor from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and an old forest district ranger cabin near which grows the biggest in the whole valley oak tree named Jan [John].
Tourist Attractions Along the Trail: Ołobok – a post-Cistercian church of St. John the Evangelist (originally late Gothic, remodeled in the 17th and 18th centuries). Mikstat – visitors’ attention is drawn to a wooden church of St. Roch located at the cemetery. Antonin – there is the Radziwiłł Dukes’ hunting lodge here and Frederic Chopin was one of their guests. To this day we are reminded of this by the Chopin music concerts and an International Festival called Chopin in Fall Colours. Nearby, Nature lovers may visit one of the most popular preserves called Wydymacz. Odolanów – it is home to a late-Baroque Church of St. Martin, a fragment of castle walls from the 13th and 14th centuries embedded in the wall of the current school that formerly used to house a Protestant community hall and at one point a synagogue.

Extreme Trails (within Regional Forest Directorates of Babki and Przedborów)
Rogalin – it has been known mostly for the late-Baroque palace and park of the Raczyński family (now part of the Poznań National Museum). The gallery of paintings contains a collection of Polish and foreign masterpieces acquired at the turn of 19th and 20th centuries by Edward Aleksander Raczyński. Three monumental oak trees bearing the names of Lech, Czech and Rus may be found in the park. In 1997, the Rogalin palace together with the park and the whole cluster of the Peduncular oaks (Quercus robur) located closer to river Warta has been identified as a protected area within the boundaries of the Rogalin Landscape Park. The Mechlin River Basin [Zespół przyrodniczo–krajobrazowy „Łęgi Mechlińskie”] – this nature and landscape sanctuary in the Mechlin River Basin has been filled primarily with forests and also a bog area on both sides of the Warta river. Nature lovers may encounter here the Red Kite or the Black Stork, and a true rarity for this region the Marsh Turtle. Puszczykowo – The Museum – The Literary Studio of Arkady Fiedler was established in the house which he has inhabited throughout his life. He was a famous writer and traveler whose numerous books are on exhibit here. Next to the studio is a Garden of Cultural Tolerance that contains replicas of some famous monuments of the world. Mosina – while walking the streets here visitors may enjoy the statue of the Mosina Man of Fashion. Kórnik – the castle here, originally a Gothic and Renaissance structure, was converted to a Neo-Gothic style at the beginning of the 19th century for Tytus Działyński, according to the design by Carl Friedrich Schinkel. The building is now a museum and a home to the Kórnik Library of PAN (Polish Academy of Sciences). The castle is surrounded by an extensive arboretum where some remarkable varieties of rhododendrons blossom in the spring.

In the Footsteps of the Sapiehas, the Horse Riding Trails of the Czarnków–Trzcianka District Within the Czarnków–Trzcianka district there are two trails with the combined length of 55 km.
On both of the routes as well as within their vicinity there are many wooden sanctuaries (earlier Protestant now Roman Catholic) most with characteristic half-timbered walls, that are an inseparable element of the local landscape. Gieczynek – a 17th-century church of the Raising of the Holy Cross with half-timbered walls. Dzierżążno Małe – the local wooden church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus with corner-notched log construction dates back to the 17th century, it was further modified in the middle of the 18th century. There is also a wooden cottage from the 19th century. Dzierżążno Wielkie – a 16th-century church of the Blessed Mary of the Rosary with half-timbered walls and old homes from the 19th century. Wieleń – visitors may enjoy the earlyBaroque 17th-century church of the Blessed Mary Assumption and St. Michael, and the 18th-century Baroque palace of the Sapieha family.

Mężyk – Paweł Jechalik has lived here. He was the so-called “Sisyphus of the Notecka Forest” who in 11 years dug out a drain canal to protect his farm from flooding. What is amazing about him is that he started his work on this project at the ripe age of 72! Czarnków – the major draw of visitors’ attention in Czarnków are: the Gothic church of Mary Magdalena, the eclectic Secession residential buildings as well as the numerous seasonal events with the Day of the Sunburnt Twin festival among them. The 14th-century Polish chronicler Janko z Czarnkowa has come from this town. Krzyż Wielkopolski – in the 19th century it was an important junction in the railroad system that includes the still-standing original train station building.
