On the evening of April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated outside room 306 of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. What happened inside room 306 the night before the killing is a mystery. In her internationally acclaimed play, The Mountaintop, playwright Katori Hall fantasizes what may have transpired in the overnight hours between the legendary civil rights leader and a seemingly inconsequential hotel maid.
Martin Luther King Jr. hours after his famed final speech, punctuated by the immortal line, “I’ve been to the mountaintop,” the celebrated reverend reveals his hopes, regrets, and fears, creating a masterful bridge between mortality and immortality. In 2018, America and the world mark the 50th anniversary of the death of Martin Luther King Jr., yet, struggles to resolve racial tension remain a challenge for communities everywhere.

The powerhouse all-male Argentinian dance company, Che Malambo, excites audiences with percussive dance, whirling lasso boleadoras, and music spectacle. Malambo, a dynamic blend of precision footwork, rhythmic stomping, drumming and song, is at the heart of the gaucho (South American cowboy) tradition and is now thrilling audiences around the world with this new production created by renowned French choreographer and former ballet dancer, Gilles Brinas. Che Malambo brings fiery South American malambo traditions and
virtuosic dancing to the stage for an exhilarating and entertaining show that is perfect for the entire family.

Malambo began in the 17th century as a kind of rhythmic competitive duel that challenged agility, strength and speed among the gauchos. The hallmark style, zapeteo, is the fast-paced footwork inspired by the rhythm of galloping horses. In addition to zapateo, malambo features the drumming of traditional Argentine bombos and whirling boleadoras, a throwing weapon made up of intertwined cords and weighted
Gilles Brinas performed with prestigious dance companies throughout Europe including Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon and the Ballet of the Twentieth Century, founded by Maurice Béjart. In addition to founding the Ballet DEA in 1979, Brinas has choreographed works for Biennale de la Danse. Amongst his many honors are awards from the Bagnolet competition and the Charles Oulmont Foundation.

Not widely known is that the pen and ink humorist had some demented issues of his own, but he still knew the meaning of family, even if his version was a topsy-turvy one. From the printed page to television to motion pictures this inversion of the typical American family has found its way to the musical stage with a modern Broadway score, imaginative special effects and our favorite mysterious and spooky characters. We find Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Wednesday and the rest in a fractured Romeo and Juliet tale—without the tragic stuff! Trio ZBR will be presenting a program that expands the definition of virtuosity in music—even the deceptively simple pieces can be fiendishly difficult to play and require incredible concentration by musicians and audiences alike. The program contains three works written specifically for the trio and, although all the pieces are deeply versed in the classical tradition, they each resist categorization and are quite novel in terms of formal structure, without ever losing an ever-present direct emotional impact. A founding member of the new music sextet Eighth Blackbird, Grammy-winning flutist Molly Alicia Barth specializes in the music of today. Jeffrey Zeigler is one of the most versatile cellists of our time, having spent eight seasons with the renowned Kronos Quartet. Pianist David Riley, no stranger to regular SonoKlect audiences, has been mesmerizing audiences at many of North America’s most prestigious venues for more than two decades. The final three piano sonatas of Beethoven, Op. 109, 110 and 111, have an iconic status for pianists and historians. They represent the climax and fruition of Beethoven’s lifelong obsession with the sonata as a genre. They also hold his most expressive and intimate emotions, from the familiarly angry and passionate to the ethereal and timeless. As both a pianist and historian, Professor Timothy Gaylard spent his final sabbatical this past Winter Term immersing himself in these complicated and fascinating works. Reading as much as he could about their genesis, Gaylard analyzed them as compositions, and he listened to countless recordings and watched many videos of different performances by the greatest pianists of the past hundred years. But, most importantly, he practiced and worked on them in preparation for this concert, an experience that he is looking forward to sharing with an audience. No tickets are required.

The program will begin with the Parkers performing Michel Pignolet de Montéclair’s charming duet cantata, Tircis et Climéne, featuring W&L’s recently acquired twomanual Watson harpsichord. Baritone Gregory Parker will perform David Conte’s American Death Ballads, a set of four songs that won the National Association of Teachers of Singing 2016 Art Song Composition Contest. Yen and McArdle will play the beautiful Violin Sonata No. 1 in A major, Op. 13 by Gabriel Fauré. No tickets are required.

Come kick off the choral season at W&L with the University Singers, Men’s Glee Club, and Cantatrici. The concert will begin with the combined forces of all the choirs performing conductor Shane Lynch’s newest work for triple choir. Cantatrici will follow with several works including Ola Gjeilo’s masterful Northern Lights, and then the Men’s Glee Club will take the stage and mesmerize with Brahms’ Alto Rhapsody, amongst other works. The Rhapsody will feature Dana Gary ’18 in the daunting and amazing female solo. The centerpiece of the program will be the University Singers’ performance of Dan Forrest’s brand new setting of Abide, based on the traditional Abide with Me hymn and the poetry of Jake Adam York. York, known for his collections of poems elegizing the Civil Rights movement’s leaders and martyrs, had this incredible poem chosen by the U.S. Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey as representative of his finest work. Masterpieces by Felix Mendelssohn, Richard Burchard, Shawn Kirchner, and a special joint arrangement by Lynch and Joshua T. Harvey of Abide with Me will round out the evening, finally closing with the W&L tradition, Shenandoah. Tickets are free, but required and available only to current W&L students and families.

In the late 1950s, Washington and Lee University 1940 alumnus Eugene M. Kramer and his wife Judith were active partners in the Gres Gallery, a significant leader in contemporary art in Washington D.C. before it closed in 1962. Through their connections, travels, and love of art, the couple amassed a small but significant collection of works by leading artists of the second half of the 20th century. Several pieces in the Kramer collection were purchased at the Gres Gallery, including an early work by Colombian artist Fernando Botero. Other notable artists in the collection include Rufino Tamayo, Max Ernst, Antoni Tàpies, Grace Hartigan and Sam Gilliam. Organized by the University Collections of Art & History, the exhibition is generously loaned by the collectors’ son, Richard E. Kramer, a 1969 W&L alumnus with a long career in theater. The collection will hang in the Kamen Gallery, Lenfest Hall, a particularly appropriate venue since Gene Kramer was an active member of the Lenfest Center development committee before it opened in 1991. In this series, Susan Worsham photographs the street where she grew up and her elderly neighbor Margaret, one of the last connections to her youth. Weaving the innocence of childhood with the gravity that attends the passage of time, Worsham’s work reflects on love, loss, death, and discovery. In 2012, Worsham received the Theresa Pollak Prize for Photography and was named one of Oxford

American’s “New Superstars of Southern Art.” She has been artist-in-residence at Light Work in Syracuse, New York, and nominee of the Santa Fe Prize for Photography. Anna Hepler conducts non-thematic experiments in ceramic, wood, metal, and paper, both handheld and monumental. Allowing each new piece to be informed by the last, Hepler coordinates a series of mutations that turn a collage into a woodcut, a woodcut into a print, a carved woodblock into a sculpture, and a wooden sculpture into a clay form. She portrays folded, slumped, stacked or intertwined forms in which one material
looks or behaves like another. Wood slats mimic hanging rope; woodblocks resemble animal hides; drypoint etchings simulate scraps of cloth; ceramics appear to be made of steel; and wire sculptures drape and flow like fabric. Hard-wired presents recent work from Hepler’s exploration into the language of visual perception; its illusions; its grammar of depth, surface, and edge; and the impressions that are gathered when certainty is lost.

Northern Triangle is a traveling exhibition organized by Blue Star Contemporary and conceived and curated by Borderland Collective. Exhibition support provided by the City of San Antonio, Department of Arts and Culture.

In 2014, more than 68,000 unaccompanied children were apprehended on the U.S./Mexico border, double the number from the previous year. Of this group, the majority are from the Central American countries of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. Known as the Northern Triangle, this region has a long and complicated relationship with the United States. Civil wars in the 1980s, deportation policies, the drug war, border issues, trade agreements, unjust
economic structures, political corruption, poverty, human trafficking, and many other situations have all contributed. Originally commissioned by Blue Star Contemporary, Northern Triangle is an exhibition created by Borderland Collective that opens a space for constructive dialogue and exchange around the current Central American refugee crisis along the U.S./Mexico border and the long and complicated history of U.S. intervention in which it is irrevocably entangled.

Multi-form artist Chloë Bass uses daily life as a site of deep research to study scales of intimacy: where patterns hold and break as group sizes expand. The Book of Everyday Instruction, her second phase of the intimacy series, is an eight-chapter investigation of one-on-one social interaction and the meaning of pairing. This exhibition brings together work from all eight chapters, focusing on such central questions as “how do we know when we’re really together?” or “how do we tell a story based on
the proximity of two bodies in space?” Odd-numbered chapters, completed in partnership with communities and organizations in Cleveland, Greensboro, St. Louis, and New Orleans, have a social practice focus; evennumbered chapters were more meditative works produced more privately in the artist’s studio. Chloë Bass is an artist and writer living in New York City where she is also an Assistant Professor of Art at Queens College, City University of New York.

In Buddha’s Picnic, Gonkar Gyatso reconstructs a countryside shrine in Staniar Gallery, creating a material and experiential journey into the modern practice of constructing temporary sanctuaries. In keeping with Gyatso’s exploration of the sacred and the mundane with an approach that is both irreverent and probing, the installation invites visitors to examine the parallels between two deeply ingrained Tibetan traditions: Buddhist worship and picnicking.
Over the past 20 years Gyatso has gained international recognition for his multimedia work examining issues around cultural identity and hybridity. He has completed many installations, including: Three Realms in Brisbane Australia in 2012; 108; Excuse Me While I Kiss the Sky for the Singapore Art Museum in 2013; Family Album at the Michael C. Carlos Museum in Atlanta, GA, 2016 and at Art Basel Encounters, March 2017.

the young artists who concentrate in one of these areas to earn the BA degree in Studio Art. As their debut into the art world, the exhibit gives the graduating seniors the opportunity to display their work in a professional gallery setting.
Tillie Walden: Panels in Process

This exhibition explores the creative process of cartoonist and illustrator Tillie Walden. Drawings, exploratory outlines, and sketchbook pages elucidate the development of Walden’s graphic novels as she works from the initial generation of ideas to the finished product. Her distinctive style blends muted colors and subtle detail with emotional storytelling that often draws on her own life experience. Walden’s acclaimed debut graphic novel, The End of Summer, came out in 2015 when she was just 19 years old. She has since published two more graphic novellas and, in 2016, earned her MFA from the Center for Cartoon Studies. The Texas-based artist is currently working on a graphic memoir.

BOX OFFICE HOURS: The Box Office follows the University’s academic calendar and is open from 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. Monday-Friday and 1 hour prior to all ticketed performances. The Box Office is CLOSED during undergraduate break and exam weeks; website sales will still be available. Individual tickets for upcoming events will go on sale approximately six (6) weeks prior to opening night. Payment for tickets at the Box Office may be made by cash, credit card or check made payable to Washington and Lee University. Payment via University Swipe is also accepted through online purchase only. All sales are final. There are no refunds or exchanges. Seating for events listed in this brochure is by general admission. There is no reserved seating; however, patrons may call the Box Office to reserve handicapped seating. Handicapped parking is also available in the fan parking lot of the Lenfest Center for the Arts. Our goal is to start all performances at the time indicated. Latecomers will be seated in the nearest seats available at a suitable pause in the performance. Patrons are encouraged to call the Box Office for information concerning the suitability of events for children. Assisted Listening Systems have been installed in both the Keller and Johnson Theatres, as well as the Wilson Concert Hall. Please see the house manager at least 15 minutes prior to curtain to sign out a receiver.

• When an event becomes sold out, a WAIT LIST will be formed at the box office. Patrons can be added to the list during regular box office hours Monday-Friday via phone, email or in person. • If any tickets become available, patrons on the WAIT LIST will be contacted in order. The patrons who are reached first will be given the available tickets. • This WAIT LIST will be effective until 3 p.m of the last work day before the performance in question. Example 1: If an event is on a Wednesday, the WAIT LIST will be effective until 3 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon. Example 2: If an event is on a Saturday, the WAIT LIST will be effective until 3 p.m. on Friday. • If you have not received any contact from the box office before this time, tickets are not available.
Lenfest Center Will Call (Day of Show) Ticket Policy
• When an event becomes sold out, A WILL CALL list will be formed at the box office once it opens 1 hour prior to the performance. No calls or emails will be accepted. • If any tickets become available, patrons on the WILL CALL list will be called out loud, in order, by the box office agent on duty. Patrons are encouraged to stay near the box office in case tickets become available. If a patron’s name is called 3 times and there is no response, the patron forfeits the right to the ticket and the next person on the list will be called. • If your name is not called by the box office before show time, tickets are not available.
