What’s with the brick? As a W&L student you will see historic bricks under your feet nearly every day. They’ll remind you that as one of the nation’s oldest colleges, W&L has paved the way for generations of graduates to make their mark on the world.

Is W&L the college for you? At W&L, we educate smart, ambitious students who have the ability and the desire to make a difference in the world. The paths our students take are varied and shaped by our commitment to a few big ideas.
1
A liberal arts education can prepare you for anything.
Our liberal arts curriculum is amplified by nationally accredited programs in business, journalism and law. Students enjoy small classes and close relationships with professors while benefiting from a remarkable variety of areas of study — a spectrum of options usually found only at large universities.
Whatever you study, you’ll develop skills that prepare you for a career after college and the ability to make an impact in anything you choose to do.
Whenever possible, learn by doing. W&L students pursue their passions, build connections between disciplines, grow from global experiences and conduct serious research. Students might predict the next presidential nominee during Mock Convention, devise ways to supply clean water in developing communities with Engineering Community Development, produce weekly news broadcasts with The Rockbridge Report or provide consulting services to nonprofits as part of the W&L Student Consulting group. We extend learning beyond traditional classrooms so students think critically and approach issues from new perspectives.
3
Personal integrity matters.
The W&L campus community is strengthened by our studentrun Honor System, a commitment students make not to lie, cheat, steal or otherwise violate the trust of the community. Students enjoy a safe and open environment that enables them to focus on what matters: learning. When you graduate, you’ll do so with a sense of personal integrity that will guide your actions and distinguish you as an alumnus of Washington and Lee University.
Cost should not be a barrier. W&L scholarships, grants and student employment meet 100 percent of demonstrated need, entirely without loans, for those students who apply for aid and are qualified. The Johnson Scholarship, W&L’s premiere merit scholarship in leadership and integrity, is awarded to nearly 10% of each incoming class and covers at least tuition, room and board, plus funds that support summer experiences at home and abroad. The W&L Promise is our pledge that we will provide the full cost of tuition — and in many cases, much more — to any undergraduate student with a family income below $125,000. These programs only represent a portion of the aid offered.
W&L is home away from home. W&L is home to students from all over the nation and world who have their own unique interests and aspirations. Here, you will join an engaged, welcoming community of individuals who often become friends for life. As a residential college, our students build enduring friendships by living together on campus, working closely with each other and professors, participating in clubs and activities, and serving the local community.
6
The world is a great classroom.
As a W&L student, global education will be part of your experience. Maybe you’ll attend a tea ceremony in our Japanese tea room or participate in a study on borders and their human impact. Maybe you’ll learn Arabic, excavate ruins in Athens, intern at a nonprofit organization in India or partner with an international student on a summer research project in his or her home country. At W&L, you’ll find an abundance of opportunities and resources to support international exploration.
7
The sky is the limit.
Our size means students benefit from individualized attention and personalized plans every step of the way, from early career exploration to post-grad preparation.
About half of our graduates go on to graduate school, where they pursue a range of programs across the humanities, social sciences and STEM disciplines, or to professional programs like medicine, business and law — including W&L’s law school (which shares the Lexington campus).
