WASHINGTON AND LEE UNIVERSITY

GENERALS’ CLUB

Richard L. Duchossois Athletic and Recreation Center

Dear Friends of the Generals’ Club, It almost goes without saying that 2020-2021 was an unusual year but it was, on so many levels, for so many people. The university, and W&L Athletics, did not escape any of the trials and tribulations of this “year like no other,” yet we came out the other side transformed and resolved. Extraordinary efforts by countless people, from all over campus, made it possible for employees and students alike to return to in-person classes while also determining how to carry out co-curricular pursuits, such as sports teams practicing and eventually competing. Our campus has also been studying and examining its history, which has created new opportunities for important and difficult reflection and dialogue about who we have been, who we are and who we want to be. In the midst of all these uncertainties and challenges this year, I saw athletes, coaches, and students demonstrate the attributes that define, and will continue to define, the character of our school. Our students committed to their academics with renewed interest and energy; trained and practiced with a deeper level of commitment and determination; loved and trusted each other, more deeply and intentionally; and were humbled by, and grateful for, what they’d learned because of what they’d been through. These characteristics have always defined athletics at W&L and they will continue define us. I am convinced that what sets Generals apart in the face of any adversity — resolve when things fall apart, strength and courage to do what it takes to move on and the spirit and renewed conviction to be their best – will remain unchanged now, and for years to come. This year has taught me that the future of W&L Athletics is bright, and W&L is committed to providing an environment that allows members of our athletic community to flourish. Championing the Generals’ Club is one way you can make sure we continue to do that. Thank you for your steadfast faith and belief in us. With deepest gratitude,

Jan Hathorn

The 2020-21 school year was unlike any other in W&L Athletics history. Due to COVID-19, the entire athletics’ schedule was condensed into a four-month span, beginning in February. While following strict protocols to keep everyone safe, our teams and athletes thrived both on the field of competition and in the classroom. Listed below and throughout the rest of the brochure are a sampling of the impressive facts and figures from this past year.

THE GENERALS’ CLUB The Generals’ Club is an organization of donors composed of former student-athletes, parents of both current and former studentathletes and friends of W&L Athletics who feel strongly about athletics and the role it plays in the education of a Washington and Lee student. Membership begins at $50, with no cap on the amount that you can give. You may designate your gift to a particular sport, in which case 25% of your gift (up to a $250 cap) will be used to support all sports teams at W&L. This portion of your gift benefits the entire department and is used for a variety of unforeseen expenses throughout the year
