Choosing a coloured gemstone… Wright marshall’s jewellery specialist Francesca Garvey talks you through what to look for when buying a coloured gemstone…

T

he classic ‘Big Three’; blue sapphires, red rubies and green emeralds are the most sought after stones. How do you choose which one to go for? There are so many alternatives and more options than generally realised, to suit every style and budget. If you are looking for a really unique piece buying with colour can be a beautiful way to achieve it. Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend but coloured gemstones will add more than sparkle to your piece. Here are a few tips on what to consider when choosing the perfect gemstone… Colour

Precious stones come in every possible shade. A rich red may be your favourite colour but you may unsure what other gemstones there are apart from a ruby – it’s worth exploring. Rubies, garnets, 4

spinel, beryl, tourmaline are all stones that fall under the ‘red’ bracket. A ruby, for example, can also come in pinky–orangey-red light or dark tones. This applies to most gemstones. Each

gemstone has a desirable colour, however, a paler pink ruby may suit your taste more than a pigeon blood colour. If you find the traditional blues, reds and greens too strong, try lavender tanzanite,

delicate blue topaz or aquamarine, citrus green peridot, purple amethysts or pink sapphires. You can choose a gem colour that speaks volumes about your personal style. Shop around to see what shade suits! Durability How hard is the stone and how do you wear your jewellery? Stones, such as tanzanite, opals and emeralds are very soft and easily scratched or broken, as opposed to harder gemstones such as sapphire and ruby. If an emerald has your heart, just be aware of the care of the stone and understand how it may wear overtime. Some stones may need to be re-polished if they are worn every day. If you’re buying a period piece, take good care, look at the quality or the stone(s) and the condition to see if it’s wearable for every day.

Setting Setting coloured stones in different metals is a bit like matching your clothes. For warmer stones such as emerald and ruby, yellow gold compliments them really well. Gemstones with pink and brown tones, such as champagne diamonds and morganite work wonderfully with rose gold. Lighter tones of blue sapphire, aquamarine and tanzanite work best with platinum or white gold. You can often choose a larger stone than you would if you were buying a diamond ring. Cost aside, you can also choose your gemstone so that it adds extra meaning to your piece. For instance, you could pick a

Whichever you choose, there is no right or wrong, it’s always best to seek some advice from a jewellery specialist. Here at Wright Marshall, Francesca Garvey can talk you through what coloured gemstones we have in the Boutique sale. Francesca is also available to carry out free valuations on any coloured stone jewellery, to contact Francesca telephone on 01565 653 284 or email francescagarvey@wrightmarshall.co.uk Did you know? Penelope Cruz and most famously Kate Middleton, both sport timeless sapphire and diamond cluster rings. Bespoke designed emerald and diamond set rings were the choice for Jackie Kennedy and Halle Berry; with Eva Longoria and Jessica Simpson both wearing ruby and diamond engagement rings. 5

BOUTIQUE SALE JULY 2016 WRIGHT MARSHALL

Designer ha

Fashion accessory or in Wright marshall’s specialist Rachel Houston-Holland looks at the increase in demand for desirable designer handbags…

D

uring the last couple of decades, there has been a huge surge in the desire for designer handbags and accessories. Luxury, high-end fashion houses, have managed to produce the right mix of marketing, classic design and exclusivity. This has therefore produced bags that have stood the test of time, both in terms of aesthetic and monetary value; but partly due also to the beautiful designs of the fashion houses and also the celebrity status of ‘that’ bag. One

36

would think, are the collectors investing in these pieces as you would a fine wine or stocks and shares? You would be right. One study claimed that the Hermes Birkin can increase by up to 15% every year from purchase, with buyers favouring the timeless classic and icon designs over the new fads. Proving a return such as this is better than investing in gold!! In today’s market, buyers are tending to move away from the high street and buy their handbags from auction

houses. The reason for this being that items can be picked up in a diverse environment at a fraction of the price, as opposed to paying full blown retail price on the High street. The advantage for the seller is that most auction houses can appeal to a global audience through an increased use of internet advertising and bidding. The Wall Street Journal reports that the price of a quilted Chanel bag has on average risen by 70 per cent in the past five years and a Louis Vuitton handbag by around 32%. It is no wonder we are seeing a huge desire from buyers looking for those classic designer pieces.

nvestment opportunity? Chanel is also one of those brands that has proved to stand the test of time, their handbags were an instant classic the moment they came to market in 1929. There iconic design has retained a classic style, with only a few adaptions being made to their already existing look; the chain straps, the quilting and the famous interlocking C’S. Chanel bags are high quality, luxurious, sexy, iconic and let’s face it - they’re a little bit of magic. Vintage Chanel bags

have become such recognised status symbols in part because of those features, but also because of the influential stylemakers such as Elizabeth Taylor and Princess Diana, who have carried the iconic bags over the years. Louis Vuitton is a brand synonymous with travel goods in the later part of the 19th Century. However it wasn’t until around the 1930s the company branched out into more of a luxury, consumer market, introducing the Noe and the Speedy bag - both still in production today. During the 1950s and 60s, both the brand and signature monogram was redesigned and reproduced in to high end ladies

handbags and small leather goods. The rest is history: Louis Vuitton is now the most valuable brand in the world. Celebrity wearers include Audrey Hepburn and Coco Chanel, who famously would only wear Louis Vuitton along with her own creations.
