Specialists’ Top Picks: Nick, Neil and Niall select their favourite lots from the auction.
▲ Lot 656: Brian Shields “Braaq” FBA (British, 1951-1997) - ‘The Boat Lake’,
▲ Lot 570: Geoffrey Key (Manchester, b. 1941) - ‘Red Hills’ Geoffrey Key is a Manchester artist but of International repute, and highly acclaimed, his artistic skill and stylistic vision set him apart. This is a particularly great example of his work and would grace any collection of Modern British Art or Northern Art. £6000 - 8000
Brian Shields was born with artistic talents but was discouraged from becoming a professional artist and after leaving school became a trainee chef in a drab hotel, in an attempt to brighten the place up he painted a mural, which caused huge interest locally and in the press and set him on his way as a professional artist, The Times described him as “one of the six most successful artists in England”. Sadly Brian died in 1997 aged just 46, his iconic images of a bygone landscape should be snapped up whenever possible. £2000 - 3000
Lot 636: Theodore Major (British, 19081999) - ‘Snow in the Wood’ Theo Major was a passionate Lancastrian and was against materialism, commercial galleries and the sale of his works to rich collectors, retaining around 3000 of his pictures during his lifetime which he said were meant for ordinary people not money. Art critic John Berger called Major’s pictures “among the best English paintings of our time”. Major is now celebrated as one of the leading names of 20th Century Northern Art. £8000 - 10000

Decades of design February 2017 WRIGHT MARSHALL
From sleek 20th furniture and art and turntables.. Wright Marshall’s specialists Niall, Nick and Neil, look at these uber-cool and very desirable markets… Niall on 20th Century Design…..
T
he market for cool and sleek furniture and decorative objects from the 20th Century has never been so popular with collectors, interior designers, and private buyers re-styling their homes. This uber-cool look can be seen in on-trend restaurants, wine bars, chic hotels, and increasingly in stylish homes throughout the UK and abroad. With classic simplistic pieces from the Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau movements of circa 1900, through to the exotically stylish Art Deco designs of the 1920’s and 30’s, and beyond into the popular ‘Mid Century’ retro and vintage furnishings from the 1950’s, 60’ and 70’s, the possibilities to source a stylish unique look or valuable collection is endless! The latest trend to explode onto the ‘20th Century’ market is the ‘Industrial’ phenomenon! With its raw utilitarian appeal growing rapidly, buyers are now appreciating the stripped back
40
architectural forms of the ‘salvaged’ wonders of our Industrial heritage. Nick on Northern Art…..
A
n area of the art market that is also bang on-trend, with established and new collectors building cool and valuable collections is Northern Art. Northern Art is the term given to the gritty 20th Century Industrial and urban landscapes particular to the North West of England, as personified in the works of L.S.Lowry, his peers, and the new generation of modern day Northern Artist.
This genre of art depicts the harsh realities as well as the lighter side of life of the people living and working in an around Manchester and its surrounding towns, both pre-war and post-war, often featuring factory’s, chimneys, viaducts, canals and terraces. Neil on Vinyl……
T
here have always been those ‘die hard’ devotees of the turntable spinning around their favourite vinyls, meticulously preserving the vinyl in their old sleeves brings its own pleasure too.

Buying at Auction BUYING
Bidding at one of our auctions is simple and straightforward, and can be done in a number of ways: IN PERSON You’ll need to register at our auction reception, giving us your name, address, contact telephone numbers and date of birth (for anti-money laundering checks). You’ll be given a unique bidding number, and to make a bid either raise your catalogue or bidding number. The auctioneer will make eye contact with you to confirm your bid’s been taken. If you have any questions, our staff will be happy to help. COMISSION BIDS If you can’t attend the auction, you can arrange for bids to be made on your behalf. Complete one of our commission bid forms (available throughout the saleroom) and either hand, or email prior to the sale: Knutsford Fine Art 01565 653284 fineart@wrightmarshall.co.uk TELEPHONE You can also bid by phone if you can’t attend in person. Register with us at least 24 hours before the auction, and a member of staff will call you before the item you wish to bid on comes up for sale. LIVE BIDDING ONLINE
The diehards have recently been joined by a more modern culture of buying public who have bucked the trend by seeking out their favourite artists of the modern day, and only vinyl will do. Pressing plants have been hard pushed to keep up with the demand for records prepared in the age old way, and this
new trend shows little signs of abating as the sale of vinyl’s has massively increased record sales across the globe.
The next best thing to being in the auction room, our live bidding experience allows you to bid from anywhere in the world. Lots appear on screen as they appear in the auction room, and the auctioneer is aware of your bids as soon as you make them. A live audio feed ads to the excitement and allows you to hear your bid being relayed. To use the online service, register with one of our providers at www.thesaleroom.com, www.invaluable.com or www. ukauctioneers.com.
This ‘dusting down’ of old equipment has meant a resurgence in the sale of both vintage vinyl and the equipment that it’s played on.
Please note: This service is not provided by Wright Marshall but by the bidding platforms themselves. We collect the fees on their behalf and add them to your invoice. For a copy of their full Terms & Conditions contact the individual host platform.

EXPLANATION OF CATALOGUING TERMS PICTURE SECTION
Droit de Suite
Any statement as to authorship, attribution, origin, date, age, provenance and condition is a statement of opinion and is not to be taken as a statement of fact. Wright Marshall Ltd reserves the right, in forming their opinion, to consult and rely upon any expert or authority considered by them to be reliable.
Following the introduction of the Artist’s Resale Right Regulations on 14th February 2006 and subsequent revisions on the 1st of January 2012 Frank Marshall will implement the new levy as follows:
1 A picture catalogued with the forename(s) and surname of the painter is in our opinion a work by the artist. When the artist’s forenames(s) is not known, a series of asterisks, followed by the surname of the artist, whether preceded by an initial or not, indicates that in our opinion the work is by the artist named. 2 ‘Attributed to’ is in our opinion probably a work by the artist but less certainty as to authorship is expressed than in the preceding category. 3 ‘Studio of’ is in our opinion a work by an unknown hand in the studio of the artist which may or may not have been executed under the artist’s direction
The Artist’s Resale Right Regulations
Frank Marshall will collect the same amount as the resale royalty from the buyer for any work of art covered by the regulations. Royalty rates will only apply to works sold in the secondary market and not for those sold for the first time, and for works which are sold for €1000 or more (approx £780 hammer price). Royalty rates are calculated as a percentage of the sale price on a sliding scale from 4% (from €1000 to €50,000) down to 0.25% (over €500,000). Resale royalties ARE NOT subject to VAT. Important Notice to Buyers:
5 ‘Style of’ is in our opinion a work by a painter working in the artist’s style, contemporary or nearly contemporary, but not necessarily his pupil.
Buyers are requested to acquaint themselves with the revised Terms of Sale and Notices. Particular note should be taken of the 17.5% plus VAT Buyer’s Premium which is payable to the Auctioneers in addition to the hammer price on each and every lot. The lots in this sale are of some age and buyers are advised to satisfy themselves of the condition of each lot before bidding. Please note that phone bidders must be prepared to bid to the lower estimate in order to secure a line.
6 ‘Manner of’ is in our opinion a work in the style of the artist and of later date.
Buyers Registration:
7 ‘After’ is in our opinion a copy of a known work of the artist.
Please note that in order to comply with current Money Laundering regulations Wright Marshall Ltd will perform an ‘Anti Money Laundering’ check on all new clients, should a buyer fail to supply sufficient information to perform this check or if they fail to meet the necessary criteria to pass this check then their registration will be refused.
4 ‘ Circle of’ is in our opinion a work by an as yet unidentified but distinct hand, closely associated with the named artist but not necessarily his pupil.
8 The terms ‘signed’ and/or ‘dated’ and/or ‘inscribed’ means that in our opinion the signature and/or date and/or inscription are from the hand of the artist
