BOUNDING SPACE [play time] studio 1 spring ‘09 brianREX [bound-ing speys] to confine, limit or restrain the unlimited three dimensional realm

bounding space explored the containment of spatial zones through an iterative series of progressive analytical diagrams based on the movie play time by jacques tati.

ARCHITECTONIC ASSEMBLAGES studio 2 fall‘09 bennettNEIMAN [ahr-ki-tek-ton-ic uh-sem-blij] to gather or assemble objects to create architectural forms

architectonic assemblages was a discussion that dealt with the issues of form and space; culminating in a discourse on the importance of sequence and program in architectural design.

AT HOME IN HETEROTOPIA: DESIGNING FOR “OTHERS” [het-er-uh-to-pee-uh] the formation of a group where its presence is abnormal. [uhth-er] : different in nature or kind; abnormal.

studio III spring ‘10 grantALFORD

at home in heterotopia: designing for “others” dealt with the issues of societal influences on program. opposing social forces, technophiles and neo-luddites, deemed “normal” and “other” respectively, were defined to create a narrative in which these forces would interact. the resulting clash influenced an architectural response in which normal was rejected and other accepted.

[media rejection|resistance] Neo-Luddite [neo-l큼d'카t]: one who rejects modern technology; opposes technological change

[neo-luddite|beliefs] Systemic order Willingness to act illegally Willingness to act destructively Opposition to mechanized/ computer driven technology 5 Concerned with the dependence on technology changing society 6 Views pre-technological life as the best post-technological prospect 7 A return to nature and more natural communities 1 2 3 4

DIGITAL MEDIA II [dm2] BLURRED SURFACES

digital elective fall ‘10 dustinWHITE

[blurred|sur-fis] : dimming the perception of part or all of the boundary of a solid

blurred surfaces studied geometry, pattern, and the unique intersection of the two. a grid of tessellated geometries was subdivided to produce a diamond-like polygon. a “rebuild function determined the finite points at which transformation of the shape no longer produced visual variety. after fifteen variations, the rebuilt shapes were arranged in a gradient sequence that was lofted to create bricks. the bricks were arranged along the existing tessellated grid using the measurements and degree of tessellation to establish order. the resulting wall exaggerated the original form.

studio IV fall ‘10 glennHILL

[struhk-cher-uhl tek-ton-iks] the science or art of assembling and shaping materials pertaining to structure.

structural tectonics was a semester devoted to the issues of structural form and tectonics. from the base point of precedent studies, form was derived by utilizing tectonic connections of various structural members [steel and concrete] to develop two projects; a long span steel wind museum and a pre-cast concrete military office building.

EMERGENCE [bacterial decay] studio V

[ih-mur-juhns] the act of coming into existence; process driven development.

logical operands were created based on the properties of the bacteria bacillus. these operands informed an apparatus which in turn provided the basis for an exploration of formal decay. decay slowly reduces a host organism to its basic form, removing skin [envelope], muscular systems [circulation] and internal organs [program]. this process of reduction exposes the skeletal [structure] as the only viable means of recognizing the previously existing form. decay unearths new systemic understandings of envelope, structure, circulation, and program.

joshuaNASON [le catalogue et la placé de la révolution sociale] studio VI summer ‘11 danielPRUSKE [mee-dee-ey-shuhn] the act of occupying an intermediate place or position between parties. [med-i-tey-shuhn] to engage in continued or extended thought to further intellectual discourse.

the quiet revolution was a period in quebec history characterized by a reorganization of industry, economy, and social order in quebec. by using the basics of revolution [disruption, upheaval, and subversion] the revolutionists redefined what it meant to be quĂŠbĂŠcois. social revolutions need a forum to spread the ideas that lead to change. le catalogue et la place de la rĂŠvolution sociale is designed to house a collection of historic and current social revolutions of every capacity, from digital collections and written works. an exhibition of the quiet revolution and its influences across the world will also be housed in the space. the place itself will act as a temporary exhibition space on the corner of saint maurice and rue mcgill that will facilitate the exchange of ideas and act as a stage for protests.
