MERSING GATEWAY Mersing, is a coastal and also a transit town located in Johor known for the departure point for ferries to offshore islands like Pulau Tioman and Pulau Rawa, where the town itself is never the destination itself. As Mersing is promoting reef tourism, Jetty itself is the only main destination for tourists when they arrive Mersing. Mersing is rich in ecosystem ranging from rainforest to reef. Apart from the surrounding islands, Mersing is also home for Gunung Arong Recreational Forest and Taman Negara Endau Rompin. But due to its characteristic as a transit town, there is a disconnectivity between these places causing tourists to not stopping by Mersing town, only focusing on the surrounding islands

The main attraction of Gateway to Mersing Nature is the interactive bridge and the open amphitheater. It acts as a gateway to Mersing Forest Reserve which is backdropping the bridge for leisure hill trail, sunrise to view, and proposed mini zip lining activity. From the interactive bridge, it connects the forest and river visually, brings people closer to nature, feels closer to Mersing. The open amphitheater act as a plaza attracting people from the main road, Jalan Jemaluang to enter the building, venue for some outdoor events, sitting area. Both interactive bridge and amphitheater connect the two parts of the building and act as a center point and interaction area for both tourists and the community.

Housing

HOUSE OF ADDITION The main objective of this project’s brief was to design a mixed-use tall building inspired by the urban, environmental, and socio/cultural aspects of its setting. Kampung Bharu is a privilege by its location which is situated in the middle of KL, besides the golden triangle. This privilege shouldn’t belong explicitly to Kampung Bharu but it should belong to KL, Malaysians and every Malaysian should have access to his privilege. Although Kampung Bharu is strategic in location, its development is relatively retarded with poor facilities and infrastructure which cause the original residents to resettle elsewhere, close to the city with a more comfortable home. The intention of this project is to bring back the original residents of kampong Bharu as well as inviting outsiders to stay in Kampung Bharu, creating multicultural, more homogenous, and dynamic in terms of culture, activity, and tradition.

The proposed site is located along Jalan Hassan Salleh beside LRT station. It is also facing Akleh highway, where the highway acts as a barrier making Kampung Bharu feeling ‘excluded ‘from the city center. The new proposed promenade not only beautifies the riverside but also breaks down the solid wall blocking the historical Klang River, increasing the permeability together with the proposed Saloma Link, which links our site to KLCC, making Kampung Bharu a step closer to the city center.

SALOMA LINK

NEW PROPOSED PROMENADE

GROUND FLOOR Ground Floor is designed to be as permeable as possible, responding to surrounding context, increasing acessibility to site. The open and elevated plaza are responding to the proposed promenade, adjascent to commercial and culture & food street, inviting more people to the site. The center space is designed in a street manner without obstruction to connect the cultural & food street to the proposed promenade with unobstructed KLCC view

PODIUM FLOOR Podium Floor is designed to be place where public and residents meet. Its a learning place for both piblic and residents which comprises spaces such as library, open lecture, activity space and various learning space to promote learning and living with views towards recreation area, Masjid Jamek Kampung Bharu and KLCC

TOWER FLOOR ( UNITS ) For the tower floors, units are designed to maximized the good views surrounding the site. The internal units are face to commercial streets on the ground floor whereas the external units are designed to face the recreation area, KLCC. KL Tower and KL city center

TOWER FLOOR ( COMMON SHARED SPACE & CORRIDOR ) The common shared space and the corridor are open to allow natural ventilation and natural lighting. The common shared space are also facing recreational area, KL Tower and KLCC which can be enjoyed by the residents

SECTION A-A

Using modular design for the additional units helps to reduce the construction cost and time as the materials which are the concrete panels, window panels, and door panels can be carried in a truck and construct within a week, with 3-4 workers, even the owner can involve themselves in the process. The additionval units are built on the steel structure prepared during the construction of the permanent units.

Live, the rental scheme for a temporary period, not only address and expand the privilege of the Kampung Bharu residence to attract them to come back and stay in Kampung Bharu, but also invite out comers to come and stay or for investment. For the rental scheme, 60 % of the housing will be on a normal market rate for kampong Bharu residence and 40% of the housing will be owned by DBKL and PKB to rent or sell the units to outsiders for a period of 5 – 10 years. After 10 years, they have to sell back to DBKL or PKB, PKB will earn from the rental and to be used for the maintenance, to reduce the residence burden on maintenance fee.

SENIOR

LEA-park

Ageing is not a pleasant subject. In many cases, it turns out to be the most challenging period of our lives. With population around the world is ageing rapidly, we cannot escape the fact that Malaysia population is ageing as well. However, currently elderly are not prepared for ageing, struggling with loss of independence, health problems and often loneliness and isolation. These scenarios are worsened by stereotype from society referring elderly as a burden member. Hence, there is a need to empower elderly and instill awareness in public through intergenerational facilities.

03 SENIOR LEA-park @ Batu Kentonmen . Jalan Ipoh . Kuala Lumpur RETHINK AGEING - a place for Learning . Empowerment . Autonomy

RETHINK AGEING “ Rethink Ageing argues on stereotype faced by elderly could be reduced by empowering elderly and instilling awareness in public through intergenerational facilities

Developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables wellbeing in older age to reduce dependency is crucial pertaining to this issue. Elderly have to regain autonomy and not to be limit by anyone to make own decision, to be mobile, to learn, to build and maintain relationship and to contribute to society. Elderly should get prepared to be independent as long as they could to avoid being a burden to the society. Furthermore, stereotype faced by elderly could be reduced by instilling awareness in public. This will encourage healthy ageing among elderly and also modify negative attitudes that younger person have towards elderly.

Located at batu kentonmen, jalan ipoh, is a middle range, diverse and inclusive neighbourhood, home for people from all walks of life. Currently 33 v% of the residents are age around 40-70+ and is expected to grow in upcoming years. Selected site is very public accessible for user to travel to site conveniently as it is located between MRT and KTM batu kentonmen.

03 SENIOR LEA-park @ Batu Kentonmen . Jalan Ipoh . Kuala Lumpur RETHINK AGEING - a place for Learning . Empowerment . Autonomy

A day @ SENIOR LEA-park So how do elderly learn, empower and stay active through this project? Let explore on how elderly can use this place. Starting in the morning, senior can have their usual outdoor exercise such as running, cycling around the building, taichi @ mini plaza , square dance @ amphitheatre. After exercising, senior can enjoy breakfast at kopitiam as a bright start @ senior leapark. During weekend, senior can also assist in ageing workshop and gallery to get more public to understand more about senior. During normal weekdays, after breakfast, seniors can opt for classes ranging from educational, artistic or physical activity classes. Taking classes can be a great way to engage in hobbies, learn something new and meet people who have similar interests. For example art & craft classes at art studiWo, It or language classes @ library, yoga and pilates classes @ wellness studio or get some meditation & therapy. After taking classes, senior can take a rest or having leisure activity and chat @ lounge to get recharged. Mobility is the biggest challenge in senior life on independency. Senior Leapark also provide rehabilitation and physiotherapy for seniors with less mobility. Seniors which are more active can also challenge themselves on their strength, flexibility, endurance and balancing @ gym. Senior LEA-park will be an age friendly environment allowing healthy ageing, where elderly can foster health and well being, participation in learning and training, build and maintain relationship and to contribute to society.

One of the challenging issues for human to live in the Red Planet is the natural threats. Mars receives strong radiation from the sun, experiencing sand storm and extreme temperature difference. It is only suitable for human to live with proper design and treatment to the shelter structure.

“ The lotus flower blooms most beautifully from the deepest and thickest mud . Lotus flower is believe to be very first flower to show up on earth, which symbolize life and rebirth. The concept of lotus flower is applied to achieve beauty, peace and harmony in Mars, for the people and also the place-making. It is a contrast to the environment on the Red Planet. The pattern of lotus flower is taken and repeated in a cycle, inspired for the dome structural system of the living and working area.

Parkville master plan proposal brings forward the idea of inclusivity which prioritizes the health and well-being of aging communities through the design of a socially sustainable urban framework which is able to cater for each stage of life within the same development. In achieving this vision, the concept of a self sustaining urban “village is implemented to bring back the values of early communal living which is common place in Malaysian kampung while drawing on the agricultural background of UPM.

DESIGN STRATEGIES

Hence, the residential district is developed based on the idea of co-living with connections to the specially designed urban farming planes. Furthermore, the design is not only able to cater to aging in place through typical design features for the elderly, but instead the development will also feature an integrated medical center within the commercial block, as well as assisted living facilities. The residential and commercial districts as well as main local buildings such as mosque, primary schools, open sport spaces and senior activity center, will be arranged around a main central public space, united by the smaller surrounding healing sports and gardens through implementation of engaging green belt linkages throughout the entire master plan.

In achieving the sustainable development goals, various types of housing and facilities are provided to encourage multigenerational living and promote aging in place where the community is able to grow and age in their familiar neighborhood despite their changing needs. The master plan includes clearly defined residential and commercial districts which surround a central public space and are united by connected smaller public spaces through pedestrian and shared vehicle linkages that form green belts passing through the entire master plan. Residential neighborhood are designed as co living apartments which provide a variety of housing types to service the needs of multigenerational communities. Furthermore, residents are provided with easy access to a medical center providing quality medical healthcare service through assisted living blocks located within the commercial district and within close proximity to the residential zones. Main local buildings such as mosque, primary schools and open sport spaces are located along the central space are easily accessible by residents. Another such space will take form of a senior activity center which will provide specialized fitness equipment for older users as well as classes which cater for lifelong learning through collaboration with UPM’s university of third Age.
