A Message from the Dean
Commencement is a momentous day for everyone—our graduates, their families and friends, faculty, and the entire medical school community. Thank you for joining us for this celebration and major milestone in the lives and careers of our students.
Our mission states WMed is committed to excellence and health equity through transformative medical education, high-quality, patient- and family-centered care, innovative research, and community partnerships within a just culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
It is this commitment to excellence and health equity by our graduates, the medical school, and the Kalamazoo community that positions us to achieve our vision, health equity for all in Southwest Michigan through innovation in the practice and study of medicine.
I congratulate our graduates on their choice to enter the healthcare profession. Our graduate and medical students have selected career paths that will have a profound impact on the health of not just individual patients, but on the broader communities they serve. They have completed the rigorous curriculum that our faculty developed to help ensure their success in their chosen careers. Now they will take their next steps as they contribute to building our WMed legacy of excellence.
Today we celebrate our graduates’ achievements and look forward to the successes they will have throughout their careers.

ACADEMIC REGALIA
Nicholas J. Helmstetter, MD Outstanding Clinical Science Educator Clinical Faculty Ian Thomas Crumm, MD Outstanding Clinical Science Educator Resident PhysicianToday’s academic regalia—the robes, hoods, and tams—originated in medieval Europe. In 1895, representatives of America’s leading academic institutions adopted a code of academic dress. The code regulates the cut, style, and materials of the gowns, and prescribes colors to represent different fields of learning. Today, with few exceptions, the academic robes are black and the colors of the hood reflect the field of learning and academic institution. At WMed for the medical degree, the gown is faced with black velvet; three bars of velvet are used across the sleeves. The hood is hunter green with a chevron of brown and gold. For master of science degrees, the gown has long swooping sleeves, and the hood is science gold with a chevron of brown and gold. All graduates wear a brown tassel with a WMed Medallion.
WMED
SEAL AND MEDALLION
The institutional seal, a symbol of Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine, is one of an academic institution’s most important symbols. Serving as the legal mark of the institution, the seal is used to authenticate official documents such as diplomas. The WMed seal includes the institutional name and two elements of the logo—the W and the Rod of Asclepius. The medallion is three inches in diameter, crafted with antique brass, and reveals the institutional seal. The medallion is at the center of a brass necklace which is a permanent part of the dean’s academic regalia, and is worn at formal ceremonial events.
THE MACE
The ceremonial mace is used to lead the academic procession at commencement and other special ceremonial occasions, signifying the importance of the event and the conformation of the academic process. The 42-inch mace is made of natural walnut and is topped with a 4-inch antique brass medallion of the institutional seal.

Class Oath
The oath of Hippocrates is a symbol of the medical profession and perhaps the most widely known of Greek medical texts. The Hippocratic Oath requires a new physician to swear upon the healing gods that the physician will uphold professional ethical standards. Over the centuries, it has been rewritten to suit the values of different cultures that have been influenced by Greek medicine. A medical oath declares the ethos of medicine and includes solemn promises that identify the covenant relationship between physicians, other healthcare providers, patients, and society as a whole. During the very first weeks of medical school, medical students in the Class of 2023 created their own class oath, which enabled the students to reflect on the principles they feel are important to embrace as medical professionals. By writing their own words, the oath created the foundation for their medical education and medical career.
CLASS OF 2023 MEDICAL STUDENT OATH
In recognition of the honor and privilege of being a member of the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine Class of 2023, I hereby dedicate myself to uphold the highest values and virtues of the medical profession.
I humbly swear to:
• Respect every teacher, peer, colleague, and patient,
• Honor the contributions of those who have come before me,
• Accept, mentor, and guide those who come after me,
• And embrace the diversity of all with whom I interact.
As a clinician, I will be compassionate toward all patients, respect their autonomy and dignity, and practice with empathy and integrity.
As a leader, I will use my position to elevate those around me. I will do so with recognition of both my strengths and limitations.
As an educator, I will share my knowledge and collaborate with my colleagues and my community.
As an advocate, I will respect and defend human rights. I will stand up for my patients and against inequality.
As a researcher,
I will strive to advance the quality of healthcare. I will maintain an inquisitive mindset and a pioneering spirit in the sciences and the arts.
I will uphold these values to the best of my ability. I profess this oath individually and as a member of the Class of 2023.
