WM Medical Communications’ New Client Shares Love of Understandable Language Center for Plain Language Emphasizes Clarity MEDIA LIAISON:

The Center for Plain Language has named WM Medical Communications’ leader, Wendy Meyeroff, as its Communications Director--and its just in time for a major awards event that emphasizes the Center’s focus. It’s the ClearMark Awards, which recognize the best in plain language communications created by North American organizations. Now in its 10th year, ClearMarks is taking place-for the first time online--Tuesday, May 7th, at 12 p.m. EDT. “The theme for this year’s ClearMarks is ‘Plain Language is Everywhere,” says Jeff Greer, the Center’s Chair, adding, “So we’re truly pleased to be working with someone whose company motto is ‘Turning the Complex into the Comprehensible.’”

“I did start over 20 years ago with 12-syllable medical lingo for places like NYPresbyterian and its Neuroscience Newsletter,” says Meyeroff. “But I realized very quickly that I was more the B2B and B2C health/science ‘translator.’ It probably helped that the direct-to-consumer market had developed and so had the ‘Net. I presented one of the first ‘writing for the web’ classes at local and national events for the American Medical Writers Association, Apple, and the Council of Science Editors and trust me--I emphasized writing and editing plain English since they couldn’t always predict their audiences’ education levels.”

She adds, “I quickly got called upon by folks in computers, engineering, law, and other areas. So many industries confuse people--even the well-educated. A CEO doesn’t necessarily understand medical verbiage.

That’s why I’m truly excited to be collaborating with the Center’s work...and the ‘Plain Language is Everywhere’ motto this year certainly helps any industry where leaders understand the importance of making every message understandable.
