LEARNER CENTERED Since Western Michigan University’s beginnings as a teachers college in 1903, students have been central to the college’s mission and goals. Throughout the years, the college’s faculty and staff have worked to support students’ academic, professional and personal goals through experiences both inside and outside of the classroom. In 2018, the College of Education and Human Development solidified its commitment to student success and retention through the creation of its Student Success Center. The center is composed of two professional staff members, two doctoral assistants from the college’s counseling program and a master’s level graduate assistant. The Student Success Center staff meet individually with every first-year CEHD student and conduct seminars on academic goal setting, study skills, stress management, interpersonal skills, career preparation and more. The center is also integrated into college and University programs, such as Orientation and Fall Welcome, in order to provide a seamless transition experience for incoming students. Initiatives such as the CEHD Student Success Center allow the college to continue keeping student learners at the heart of our institutional endeavors.

Each grant awarded to CEHD demonstrates that our college is a center of enrichment for our students, the research community, and the citizens of southwest Michigan and beyond. We are proud of our faculty members and their impact on the WMU community. As they move education and human development research forward, our world becomes a better place.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN Dear all, It is my pleasure to present to you the annual Impact Report of the College of Education and Human Development at Western Michigan University (WMU) for the 2017-2018 academic year. The performance metrics included in this report give our readers an overview of the impact generated by our collective efforts on the three areas that depict and comprise the vision of our university: Learner Centered, Discovery Driven and Globally Engaged. Particularly, to fulfill our promise to be a learnercentered college, we have taken many initiatives with a keen focus on student success, such as creating a Student Success Center and investing more staff resources on student mentorship and advising. To truly become discovery driven, we continued the tradition in nurturing an environment that values and promotes creativity and research. As such, our faculty secured close to $18 million in external grants and contracts in the 2017-2018 academic year and received the largest grant in the history of our institution. When calculated on a per capita faculty basis, our college ranks the first among all the colleges at WMU. To be globally engaged, we continued to encourage more and more of our students to participate in study or internship abroad programs with financial support. We also recruited international students from 37 countries and are involved in building academic agreements with international partner institutions through 1+1, 2+2, 3+1 and 3+2 formats. In short, our faculty and staff have had another successful year. We are continuing our great tradition of success in providing distinctive and exceptional learning experiences to our students in education and human development. Sincerely,
Ming Li, Ed.D. Dean
