Rated the 10thtoughest schedule among non-BCS schools, Western Michigan took on six bowl-eligible teams, including a pair of teams that finished the year ranked in the top six in the country (West Virginia and Missouri). WMU captured its second win over a BCS school in as many seasons, defeating Iowa, 28-19, in Iowa City. WMU captured its first bowl bid in 18 years (1988 California Bowl) when the Broncos faced the University of Cincinnati in the inaugural International Bowl on Jan. 6, 2007. The team led the nation in interceptions (22) and ranked sixth in the country in rush defense (71.92 ypg), holding the opposition under 10 net yards rushing four time last year. The program earned eight wins in 2006, marking only the fifth time in its history that feat had been accomplished and the Broncos went undefeated at Waldo Stadium for the first time since 2000.

Bill Cubit is entering his fifth season at the helm of the Western Michigan University football program in 2009. Prior to the Broncos’ bowl game in Houston, Texas, Coach Cubit agreed to a five-year extension which will keep him in the Brown & Gold through the 2013 season. Cubit boasts a record of 29-20 with the Broncos and holds a 20-11 mark in the Mid-American Conference. Cubit’s win total is over the past four years is the second most over that span in program history, second only to the 31 wins posted by the Broncos from 1997-2000. Cubit was the offensive coordinator for two of those seasons as well. The WMU football program has garnered 31 All-MAC selections, 10 Academic All-MAC selections, two Associated Press All-Americans and two ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America selection under the leadership of Coach Cubit. The 2008 campaign was one to remember as Western Michigan captured nine wins for only the third time in program history and appeared in its fourth postseason bowl game, the second in three years under Cubit, when WMU played Rice in the 2008 Texas Bowl. The Broncos offense ranked 28th in the country with a passing offense that ranked 11th.

Five former Broncos have made the step to the next level under Cubit’s reign. Jennings was the 52nd overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, going to the Green Bay Packers. Nine picks later, Tony Scheffler was selected 61st over all by the Denver Broncos. One season later, Dominic Moran and Ismail were both invited to NFL mini-camps by the New York Jets and New Orleans Saints, respectively. His son, and former Bronco quarterback, Ryan Cubit signed a two-year contract with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League in April of 2007. Jennings and Scheffler remain in the NFL and have experienced great success through their first two seasons. Cubit officially became the 14th coach in program history on Dec. 4, 2004, as the Broncos embarked on their 100th season of varsity football in 2005. Cubit turned the program around in his first season, bringing the first winning campaign to Kalamazoo since 2000. The Broncos’ 7-4 overall record and 5-3 conference mark was the second largest one-year turnaround in the nation in 2005 and was the largest one-year turn around in Mid-American Conference history. In doing so, he was named the MAC Coach of the Year and was ranked fourth among Division I-A coaches in the first year with their program. He brings 31 years of coaching experience, including 16 years as a head coach on the collegiate and high school level and seven years as an offensive coordinator at four NCAA Division I schools having worked the sidelines in five of the nation’s premiere conferences (Mid-American, Big East, Big 12, PAC-10 and Southeastern). Cubit returns to Western Michigan where he served as offensive coordinator from 1997-99.

Western Michigan went undefeated in home games (6-0) for the 10th time in program history, going a perfect 5-0 at Waldo Stadium and winning a home game at Ford Field against Illinois. It marked the second-straight season the Broncos defeated a Big Ten team and the third straight season with a win over a team from a BCS conference. WMU also broke the single-season record for pass completions (326).

Prior to returning to Kalamazoo in 2004, Cubit served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Stanford University. He coached the quarterbacks for two seasons (2003-04) and served as the Stanford offensive coordinator as well in 2004. In 2004, Cubit directed a Cardinal offense that ranked 28th in NCAA passing (247.3 yards per game). Prior to his stint in Palo Alto, Cubit served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Rutgers University (2001-02). He also worked as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach under Larry Smith at Missouri during the 2000 season.

In 2007, the Cubit-led offense had its first 3,000-yard passer since 1999 and saw a running back eclipse the 2,000-yard career rush-

2008 TEXAS BOWL

2007 INTERNATIONAL BOWL

2009 SEASON PREVIEW The 2008 edition of Western Michigan football was a special one. Everyone who follows Bronco football knows about the third nine-win season in program history, the fourth bowl game in program history and second in three seasons, the 29 wins over a four-year span and the 500th program win on Oct. 4. In spite of all this, as soon as the Reliant Stadium clock hit 0:00 to close out the 2008 Texas Bowl, work began on 2009, the 104th season of Western Michigan football. WMU welcomes back 32 letterwinners, including seven starters on offense and three on the defensive side of the ball. Included in that group is All-Mid-American Conference returnees Tim Hiller, Juan Nunez, Austin Pritchard, Phillip Swanson and Brandon West. They are joined by a group of Broncos who are eager to prove their worth on the field this season. Offense (19 letterwinners,7 starters) Quarterbacks (1, 1) Hiller returns for his senior season and if he amasses the numbers he did as a junior, the WMU record book will littered with the Orrville, Ohio, native’s name. He is already perched above all other Bronco signal callers in single-season attempts (522), completions (339), yards (3,725) and TDs (36) and is one of only two quarterbacks to reach the 3,000-yard plateau twice in a career. Two-thousand eight was the senior’s second full season as a starter and his grasp of head coach Bill Cubit’s offense grew with each game. His effort in WMU’s comeback win at Buffalo set school records for attempts (63) and completions (42) and his 471 yards at Central Michigan is more than any other Bronco in a game in program history. With all of these accolades, Hiller and the Broncos know that having an able back up is a must in college football. He injured his left knee during WMU’s 23-17 win over Illinois, its second over a Big Ten team in as many seasons, but he powered through the final two regular season games and the Broncos’ bowl appearance against Rice. Western Michigan returns junior signal caller Drew Burdi, who is a legitimate dual threat behind center. Burdi showed his versatility in WMU’s win over Idaho, running 42 yards for a score, and at nationally ranked Ball State, where his TD pass ranked fifth on ESPN’s SportsCenter Plays of the Day, that night. He and redshirt freshman Alex Carder will battle for the backup spot in 2009. Carder took last season to grasp the offense and has shown arm strength that could to be beneficial for the Broncos for seasons to come. Offensive Line (5, 4) Almost the entire starting offensive line returns in 2009, including Swanson, a Third Team All-MAC guard and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American. Swanson is rejoined by fel-

low starters Anthony Parker at Tackle, Nick Clemens at guard and both Nick Mitchell and Paul Wasikowski, who each logged significant time as the starting center as season ago. Swanson and Parker worked to protect Hiller’s blind side at left tackle in 2008 but Swanson moved back to left guard midway through the year and Parker found his groove at right tackle. Depth will be WMU’s main concern in 2009 as most of those backing up each slot of the offensive line will either be redshirt freshmen, true freshmen or sophomores. The departure of Rob Johnson leaves an opening at tackle. Possibilities along the line, one which has produced a 1,000yard rusher in three of the last four years, are Jonathan Jack, Kevin Galeher, Kevin Fretz or possibly one of the five true freshmen recruited by the Broncos coaching staff this past spring. Running Backs (3, 1) For the first time since 2006, Western Michigan has a legitimate 1-2 punch in the backfield with returning senior Brandon West and sophomore Aaron Winchester. Unlike the duo of West and Mark Bonds three seasons ago, these two running backs are power and finesse combined. West became the 15th back in program history to rush for over 1,000 yards and was the third to do so in four seasons. Winchester averaged nearly four yards per carry during his rookie campaign. Both were excellent release valves in the passing game, combining for 376 yards and three scores on 47 receptions. West is coming off an All-MAC season and Winchester was one of five Bronco freshmen to be named to the All-MAC Freshman Team by CollegeFootballNews.com in 2008. They will be rejoined by bruising runner Glenis Thompson and redshirt freshman Jamie Simpson, along with a pair of newcomers, names, who will vie for playing time in 2009. Receivers/Tight Ends (3, 1) The hardest hit positional unit on the offense is at wide receiver and tight end. Jamarko Simmons, Schneider Julien and Branden Ledbetter have moved on and moving on with them are the 208 receptions, 2,452 yards and 19 touchdowns this trio combined for a season ago. Returning is deep threat and Third Team All-MAC selection Juan Nunez. The junior tied Simmons for the most receiving TDs (7) and had long receptions of 30 yards or more in seven of 12 games played, having long catches of 41 and 45 yards against Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan, respectively. WMU needs to find that second go to receiver as Nunez was for Simmons in 2008. In order to keep him out of double coverage situations, the likelihood is that the responsibility will fall on an underclassman. Converted quarterback Robert

2009 WESTERN MICHIGAN FOOTBALL SPRING FOOTBALL Arnheim showed flashes of dependability as a redshirt freshman but had just nine catches. Dervon Wallace and Deshon Lawrence combined four catches but will have another spring practice season to get themselves fully entrenched in the Bronco offensive scheme. Redshirt freshman Seth Patterson also should see time at wide out in 2009. The tight end position now turns to Matt Stevens. Despite only recording six catches a season ago, he has shown to be successful in goal line/scoring situations, and also proved to be threat on the seam route much like his predecessors Ledbetter and Tony Scheffler. Defense (10 letterwinners, 4 starters) Defensive Line (3, 2) The Bronco faithful received a preview of the 2009 defensive line in WMU’s win over Illinois. Justin Braska, Cody Cielenski, Drew Nowak and Weston Peiffer all logged significant time in the trenches a season ago and even though this foursome still has to work towards earning a starting spot (as is true at many spots on the Bronco defense), they combined for 100 tackles 23.0 tackles for loss and 12.0 sacks in 2008. The benefit of this group is their youth. Nowak and Peiffer are returning sophomores and many of the Broncos in this positional unit are either freshmen or redshirt freshmen. The depth is there but the talent needs to be groomed before the coaching staff can determine what combination will work the best. WMU needs to find an edge pass rusher within the ranks in order to have success in stopping many of the dual-threat quarterbacks the Broncos will face in 2009. Linebackers (2, 2) The linebacker corps at Western Michigan is another area of the defense where it returns starters and strength. First Team All-MAC selection Austin Pritchard was second on the team with 86 tackles and led the defense with 12.5 TFLs. He is rejoined by sophomore Mitch Zajac, another CollegeFootballNews.com All-MAC Freshman Team member. He earned his first start against Illinois and started every game thereafter. With two-thirds of the starting linebackers returning, Western Michigan will possibly look to its younger corps to fill in the vacancy left by Boston McCornell and Dustin Duclo, unless the Broncos continue to show opposing offenses different looks from the nickel and sometimes dime packages. Secondary (2, 0) This positional unit is by far the hardest hit coming into 2009 in terms of experience. Three of the four starters from a year ago were All-MAC and two, Louis Delmas and Londen Fryar, were awarded all-conference honors in multiple seasons.

during their sophomore seasons. Also joining the fold after sitting out one year is University of Miami transfer Doug Wiggins, who is versatile and fast. Special Teams (3 letterwinners, 3 starters) Kickers/Punters/Snappers (3, 3) Western Michigan returns its kicker, punter and long snapper for the first time since 2007. Returning sophomore punter Ben Armer and kicker John Potter had on the job training in 2008 as redshirt and true freshmen, respectively. Potter scored the seventh most points in a season for a kicker, while Armer averaged over 40 yards per punt. Former walk-on Tom Harrington returns for his senior season and fourth as the Broncos primary snapper on punts, extra points and field goals. WMU will look to get a few younger athletes experience in the art of long snapping as Harrington will depart after the 2009 campaign. Returners WMU’s career record holder for kick returns, kick return yards and all-purpose yards returns in the form of Brandon West. Aaron Winchester showed his skill in the return game as well. He racked up 446 return yards as a true freshman. WMU will look toward a new direction in the punt return game as both Schneider Julien and E.J. Biggers have moved on. Coaching Staff Unlike in years past, the WMU’s coaching staff has remained intact. The only coach to leave the staff was A.J. Ricker, who is now the offensive line coach at Saint Joseph’s College. The only other change is that Ryan Cubit is now working with the Bronco quarterbacks full time. The continuity of having the same coaching staff will help Western Michigan in implementing its game plan and getting the newcomers acclimated. Schedule The Broncos face three Big Ten opponents in 2009 (Michigan, Indiana and Michigan State), opening the season on Sept. 5 at “The Big House.” WMU will have five home games this season, including MAC West rivals Central Michigan and Ball State at Waldo Stadium. MAC West games against Toledo, Eastern Michigan and Northern Illinois will be on the road. The success of the 2008 season is something to build on but not to dwell on. Each team has one season, one game, one quarter and one practice at a time to prove its worth and the work put in during March through April and in August will tell each Bronco on the roster how successful they can be in 2009.

The experience these four provided to their younger teammates is a reason why the Bronco secondary will continue with success. Sophomore Josh Price proved to be a ball hawk similar to Delmas with similar hitting ability as well. Mario Armstrong and Jamail Berry each provided sound coverage

2009 WESTERN MICHIGAN FOOTBALL SPRING FOOTBALL

2008 SEASON REVIEW Western Michigan entered its 103rd season hungry for success. This team, led by fourth-year head coach Bill Cubit and his dedicated coaching staff, is littered with talent at every position and with 26 seniors leading the way, the Broncos took stock in knowing that whatever the outcome would be week in and week out, they would do together, as one cohesive unit, as a team. WMU 24, Nebraska 47 Western Michigan opened the 2008 campaign in a familiar setting, on the road against a storied program from a BCS conference. The Broncos battled Nebraska for four quarters in front of nearly 85,000 red-clan Husker fans, scoring 20 or more points for the seventh time in nine games against a BCS team. Tim Hiller opened the season with his first 300-yard passing effort, throwing for 342 yards and two touchdowns. He completed a pair of passes for 50 yards to seniors Branden Ledbetter and “Spider” Julien. Ledbetter had a near career-day with 123 yards on nine receptions, including a three-yard scoring grab in the second quarter. WMU’s defense stepped up in the second half, picking off two Nebraska passes as Louis Delmas and C.J. Wilson each added to their career totals. WMU 29, Northern Illinois 26 The Broncos opened Waldo Stadium on CommUniverCity Night with Mid-American Conference West rival Northern Illinois. WMU improved to 10-1 in home openers since 1997, 18-11 in home openers against a MAC team and defeated NIU for the third-straight season with the 29-26 victory. Jamarko Simmons eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the first time in 2008 with eight grabs for 102 yards and a 26-yard touchdown to tie the game in the first quarter. Also getting in on offense was Austin Pritchard, scoring a touchdown in the fourth quarter to put WMU up, 29-19 with the extra point. It was the first reception and touchdown of Pritchard’s career, but it wouldn’t be the last. Brandon West put the league on notice early in the season, rushing for a career-high 175 yards against the Huskies for his first 100-yard rushing game of the season. WMU 51, Idaho 28 Western Michigan made its first-ever trip to the Kibbie Dome in Moscow, Idaho as the Broncos rolled to their second win of the season, 51-28. The Bronco offense was sparked by an outstanding defensive play from senior free safety Delmas less than three minutes into the game. With the Vandals on their own 47-yard line, Delmas stepped in front of a pass and raced untouched into the end zone for the first pick-six of his career, giving WMU the early lead. It was Delmas’ third-straight game with an interception and also his third game in a row with 10 or more tackles. Hiller registered four touchdowns in the game, connecting with Simmons and Ledbetter twice as three receivers finished with over 50 yards receiving. Late in the game, the Western Michigan aerial attack gave way to its ground game as Drew Burdi came into the game and scored on his second play of the game on a run up the middle from 42 yards out. Western Michigan freshman Josh Price posted two points on the board in the Broncos’ 23-point third quarter with the team’s first safety of the season. WMU 41, Tennessee Tech 7 The Broncos amassed over 600 yards of offense in a game for the first time since 2003 with 633 total in their 41-7 win over Tennessee Tech. Hiller threw five touchdowns in a game for only the second time in his career, while completing an astounding 87 percent of his 31 pass attempts. Brandon West recorded his second 100-yard rushing effort of the season, carrying the ball 14 times for 133 yards and a touchdown from six yards out in the second quarter. Senior running back Kirk Elsworth caught the first two touchdowns of his career in the second and third quarters, scoring from three and seven yards out to cap the Broncos’ offensive outburst. WMU 7, Temple 3 The Broncos traveled to City of Brotherly Love in search of its fourth-straight win and came away with a nail-biting, 7-3, win over Temple. WMU scored the fewest points in a win since defeating Akron by the same score during the 1995 season. Western Michigan gave up a field goal to the Owls on their first drive and then the Bronco defense grinded the Temple offense to a halt, allowing just 10 total first downs, forcing six three-and-out possessions and giving up only 199 yards of total offense. The game turned in the third quarter when Hiller found Juan Nunez down the left sideline for 30 yards and the game’s only touchdown. The win im-

18

proved the Broncos to 4-1 on the season, 2-0 in the MAC and gave the program a perfect record in the month of September. WMU 41, Ohio 20 The date October 4, 2008 will be forever remembered by fans of the Brown & Gold as Western Michigan captured the program’s 500th win with a 41-20 Homecoming victory over Ohio. Brandon West registered 239 all-purpose yards on the afternoon, scoring three times for the Broncos. The junior hauled in two receiving touchdowns in a game for the first time in his career and added another on the ground en route to 107 yards rushing, 72 yards receiving and 60 yards on kickoff returns. The Broncos recorded their second safety of the season when senior defensive end Zach Davidson dropped the Ohio quarterback in the end zone with just under three minutes remaining in the opening quarter. WMU 34, Buffalo 28 OT The Broncos entered UB Stadium looking to remain perfect against Buffalo in the all-time series. Down 21-6 heading into the fourth quarter, things looked bleak for WMU and their fans but 22 points in the fourth quarter but a combined offensive and defensive effort in overtime gave Western Michigan a 3428 victory, its sixth-straight win and kept the Broncos perfect in conference play. Tim Hiller set school and UB Stadium records that day for pass completions and attempts, connecting on 42-of 63 passes for 345 yards and four more touchdowns, all coming in the fourth quarter and overtime. His first was to Nunez from six yards out and then two-straight scoring strikes to Jamarko Simmons with the last tying the game with just five second remaining in regulation. The Bronco defense, which had earlier recorded its second blocked kick in as many games, came up with possibly the biggest stop of the season to that point when Louis Delmas intercepted a deflected pass in the end zone to turn the Bulls away and then Hiller found Branden Ledbetter in the front right corner of the end zone to take the win back home to Kalamazoo with the Broncos. WMU 28, Central Michigan 38 Western Michigan was denied a seventh-straight win on October 18th on a day that saw offensive records fall and a career high defensive effort from junior linebacker Austin Pritchard, who recorded a career-high 17 tackles in the loss. Tim Hiller broke the school record for passing yards in a game with 471 and two touchdowns as the Broncos had three receivers go over 100 yards in a game for the first time since September 4th, 1999. Juan Nunez led the effort with 145 yards on 10 catches, followed by Spider Julien with 128 yards and Simmons with 118. WMU 31, Eastern Michigan 10 The Broncos bounced back after the bye week to defeat MAC West and in-state rival Eastern Michigan, 31-10, avenging their loss from a season ago. Julien continued his hot offensive streak, recording his third touchdown in as many games and Jamarko Simmons hauled in seven catches for 128 yards, the 10th 100-yard receiving game for the senior to that point. The Broncos amassed over 500 yards of total offense for the fourth time in 2008 with 502 total yards as Tim Hiller threw for 339 yards and became only the third player ever to have 7,000 yards passing in a career. His third and final scoring strike landed in the hands of Branden Ledbetter late in the fourth quarter to make the only tight end in Bronco history to have three seasons with at least six touchdowns through the air. WMU 23, Illinois 17 The Broncos hosted its first game ever at Ford Field in Detroit and welcomed last year’s Big Ten Rose Bowl representative, Illinois. Western Michigan captured its third win over a BCS team in as many seasons and second-straight season with a win over a Big Ten team with a 23-17 victory over the Illini. Jamarko Simmons broke out against Illinois, breaking Greg Jennings’ record for career receptions with his 11-catch, 174-yard effort. The 174 yards, a career-high, were four more yards than he needed to reach the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his career. His effort was recognized nationally that evening as he was awarded a coveted helmet sticker on ESPN’s College Game Day Final, giving the Broncos their third such honor in as many seasons. Hiller put on a show through the air, completing 28-of-40 passes for 301 yards and a pair of touchdowns to become only the second Bronco with 3,000 yards passing in back-to-back seasons and gave the program its first 3,000yard passer and 1,000-yard receiver in the same season since 1999. WMU jumped out to a 20-7 lead in the first half thanks to a pair of interceptions that resulted in 14 Bronco points. E.J. Biggers and Londen Fryar gave the

ball back to their offense in the second quarter and led to a 10-yard touchdown from Hiller to Robert Arnheim and a 15-yard toe-tapping touchdown from Hiller to Simmons. More than one record formerly held by Jennings fell against the Illini as Brandon West became the program’s career record holder for all-purpose yards 10 games into his junior season. It was also a special day for special teams rookie John Potter. He recorded a career-high three field goals, including a career-long 45-yard attempt in the fourth quarter to give WMU a six-point lead and set the stage for the Bronco defense’s last stand in the shadow of its own end zone in the final minute. The win also broke a Mid-American Conference record for wins against the Big Ten in a seaosn, giving the MAC four in 2008. WMU 27, Toledo 17 Senior Day was filled with emotion throughout as Western Michigan captured its ninth win of the season with a 27-17 victory over Toledo. It secured the third nine-win season in program history and gave the Broncos its third-straight victory over the Rockets since 1978. Battling through injury, Western Michigan battled through the first half and trailed 7-3 as the offense took over with one minute, 12 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Four plays later, the Broncos found themselves on the one-yard line with four seconds left with a first-and-goal opportunity. Tim Hiller connected with linebacker Austin Pritchard for the go ahead score. Freshman running back Aaron Winchester stepped into the starting role at running back and stepped up to the challenge, rushing the ball 28 times for 111 yards, the first 100-yard game of his career. He sparked the Broncos offense with a 48-yard kick return to open the second half and led to Hiller connecting with Juan Nunez for six of WMU’s 20-straight points during the second and third quarters. The win was also Western Michigan’s 29th over the past four years, which ranks second all-time to the 31-win effort between the 1997 and 2000 seasons for the Broncos. WMU 22, No. 15 Ball State 45 The Broncos closed out the regular season facing a ranked opponent for the 20th time in program history and in front of a national audience on ESPN2. Despite falling short, the accomplishments of this team were front and center as three Broncos reached single-season milestones. Quarterback Tim Hiller matched the touchdown total of Tim Lester from 1999 with his 34th scoring strike of the season, connecting with Juan Nunez from nine yards out to tie the score at 14 in the second quarter. Jamarko Simmons matched Greg Jennings’ 2005 reception total of 98 with six catches for 84 yards, including an acrobatic catch in traffic to set up Hiller’s touchdown pass one play later. With eight stops on the night, Louis Delmas reached 100 tackles in a season, becoming the first Bronco to do so since 2003. The Broncos received added national attention on that night’s SportsCenter. Drew Burdi’s 36-yard option pass found Schneider Julien behind the defense for WMU’s first touchdown of the night. That play was ranked No. 5 on ESPN’s Top 10 Plays of the Day. 2008 TEXAS BOWL WMU 14, Rice 38 Even before Western Michigan took the field against Rice in the 2008 Texas Bowl, held at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas, Bronco football had accomplished so much on and off the field in 2008. On the field this team amassed nine wins for only the third time in program history, and last year’s senior class was not only the first to take the Broncos to a bowl game twice in their collective career, but also accrued the second most wins (29) over a four-year span in program history. Off the field, a pair of Broncos earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District and offensive lineman Phillip Swanson became WMU’s eighth student-athlete to earn Academic All-America. When the dust had settled on the season, records had fallen Jamarko Simmons stood as the program’s record holder in receptions (104) and receiving yards (1,276) in a season. Tim Hiller emerged as the program’s record holder for passing attempts (522), completions (339), yards (3,725) and TDs (36) in a single season. Brandon West became the 15th Bronco to rush for 1,000 yards in a season (1,026) and the third different Bronco to do so in the past four seasons. He also cemented his name in the WMU record book claiming the records for career kick returns, kick return yards and all-purpose yards.
