The mission of the Western Michigan University strength and conditioning program is to provide each student-athlete with an opportunity to develop their physical abilities, through safe and objective training. Through these means the strength and conditioning program will attempt to improve athletic performance and minimize injuries related to athletic competition.

Philosophy

At Western Michigan University, each workout will be an organized and detailed plan, combining exercise selection with effective set and repetition schemes, to be coordinated with appropriate conditioning. These workouts will afford each athlete an opportunity to improve technique in all exercises, improve muscular strength, and improve conditioning without overtraining.

SEASON PREVIEW

The Western Michigan women’s soccer team entered the 2008 season with a chip on its shoulder. The team was voted to finish 12th out of 12 teams in the Mid-American Conference preseason coaches’ poll. After starting the season with a 3-0 win over Wyoming, the Broncos lost six straight to end the non-conference schedule. WMU rebounded during conference play, exceding preseason expectations by going 6-4-1 and finishing in fifth place. With a new interim head coach, the Broncos look to build on a strong finish in 2008 and carry it over into the 2009 season. Suzie Grech takes over as interim head coach after spending two years as an assistant with Western Michigan. The Broncos return 10 of 11 starters from the previous season as well as every goal scorer. Western Michigan opens its

play in the backfield helped the Broncos produce five shutouts on the season. “Hillary is definitely a vocal leader,” commented Grech. “She has a very fiery personality and a passion out on the field that everyone is able to see. I think with a year as captain under her belt, she was able to really grow in to the roll of being a leader in the back line as well as off the field.” Junior Ashley Caliendo will be the other captain, donning the arm band for the first time in her career. Nicknamed ACE, Caliendo is coming off her first full-length collegiate season after missing significant action her first two years due to injury. Caliendo started all 19 games and was an important part of WMU’s success off of set pieces, taking many corner kicks.

Carmichael had a career season, netting four goals and tallying three assists. Her ability to lead and finish an attack adds valuable versitility to the Bronco lineup.

“With ACE it comes down to her ability and intensity on the field,” added Grech. “She is one of those players that are always going to give 100-percent. She is more of a silent leader and leads by example on and off the field. Sophomore Caitlin Henderson stepped in and started in all 19 games as an outsideback in her first collegiate season and finished the year tied with Caliendo and Kelsey Carmichael for the team lead in assists with three. Fellow sophomore Victoria Slavin saw action 11 games, starting in one, before suffering a season-ending injury. Senior Michele Roffey saw action off the bench, appearing in 16 games. Newcomers

Kelsey Baskins and Stefana Ciraulo will also add depth to the defense. GOALKEEPER Junior Julia Francy saw action in every minute of every game during the 2008 season. She posted a 7-11-1 record with 98 saves and allowed 26 goals. With the help of her defense Francy posted five shutouts on the season, pushing her career total to 10. Francy helped WMU to a 5-2-1 record at home with the only loss coming during conference play. Freshman Autumn Lucero will be WMU’s second option in the net. MIDFIELD The Broncos return every starting midfielder

DEFENSE The heart of the 2009 team may come from the back line, as both captains are two of WMU’s top defenders. Senior Hillary Wernlund enters her second year wearing the captain’s arm band. She started all 19 games last season and scored her first career goal, the game-winner in WMU’s 3-0 win over Wyoming. However goal scoring is not her prowess as a defender and her

FORWARDS Heading in to the 2009 season Western Michigan had scored just 10 goals during the previous season. The Broncos needed to score more goals if they were to be successful.

Senior Patrice Impelido tallied three goals and started all 18 games she played in. Impelido’s consistent all-around play helped the Broncos improve possession in the midfield. Junior Nicole Dulyea can be dangerous when taking free-kicks in the attacking zone, as she tallied her lone goal on the season last year coming off a set piece. Dulyea, who stands 5-foot-11, is one of WMU’s most consistent ball winners, using her height to her advantage when the ball is in the air. Dulyea finished third on the team with 28 shots, with 14 of them on net.

An answer to that problem was found with then freshman forward Stephanie Skowneski. Skowneski blended speed and skill to net five goals and tally 11 points on the season to become the WMU’s top goal scorer. SUZIE

GRECH COACHING STAFF

INTERIM HEAD COACH First Season Michigan, 2005

Suzie Grech was named interim head coach of the Western Michigan women’s soccer program on July 13, 2009, after two seasons as an assistant coach for the Broncos. Grech has coached at both the high school and collegiate levels and was a standout goalkeeper at the University of Michigan. The Philadelphia, Pa., native is the third coach in school history and will be involved in all facets of the program at WMU, and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the goalkeeping unit.

Grech arrived in Kalamazoo after spending the 2007 preseason with her alma mater as a volunteer assistant coach. She also served as the assistant girl’s soccer coach at Pioneer High School during the 2007 season. Prior to the 2008 season Grech spent a week in Belize with Peacework, an organization in Blacksburg, Va. Grech and others helped out with construction projects for schools and helped coached students. She helped out with three other coaches, Matt Gwilliam (Virginia Tech), Erica Demers (Grand Valley State), and Scott Letts (Marshall). In addition to their coaching duties, they also passed out soccer equipment to the kids provided by Peacework. Prior to her stint around Ann Arbor, Grech was an assistant at Marshall for two seasons, acting as the goalkeeper coach. With the Thundering Herd, she was in charge of technical and tactical training of the goalies and assisted with on-field instruction. She also was highly involved in recruiting, travel and other administrative duties. Grech played at Michigan from 2000-2003, and left the women’s soccer program as the all-time leader in goals-against average and shutouts, ending her Wolverine career with a record of 36-18-3. Her Michigan teams made four NCAA appearances in 2000, 2001, 2002 (Elite Eight) and 2003 (Sweet Sixteen), and in 2001, she earned Second Team All-Big Ten and All-Great Lakes Region honors. Grech also participated internationally for Spain, where she earned a silver medal at the European Women’s U-18 Championships in 1999 and 2000. She garnered six International Caps with the full national team, and 14 International Caps with the U-18 national team. From 2003 to 2005, she coached at Brighton High School in Brighton, Mich., and served as an assistant coach for the University of Michigan’s Soccer Club. Grech graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in physical education in 2005 and received her master’s degree in sports administration from Marshall in 2006. She holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) National “B” License and has a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) advanced national goalkeeping diploma.

GREAT PERFORMANCES

WMU successful in NCAA College Cup debut Nov. 14, 2003 Western Michigan’s first ever NCAA Tournament appearance provided the backdrop for the program’s most significant victory. WMU shocked ninth-ranked Illinois, 2-0, on a chilly evening in Champaign. The Illini held a commanding edge in shots (18-5) and corners (9-1), but goalkeeper Katie Perz was unflappable, earning the shutout with four saves. Chantal Robinson (21st minute) and Jessica Pattison (85th) provided the goals, handing Illinois just its fourth loss in 22 games.

Kathy Beauregard, the Director of Athletics at Western Michigan University, has been involved with the Broncos in several capacities over the course of the past 29 years. She is the second-longest serving athletic director in the Mid-American Conference.

KATHY BEAUREGARD

Beauregard arrived in Kalamazoo as a coach before moving into administration and is entering her 12th season as mentor of one of the top programs in the MAC.

Along with four MAC titles (men’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer and men’s tennis) in 2003-04, the Broncos also enjoyed an increased level of success in the classroom. WMU’s graduation rate of 83 percent in 2003 ranked eighth nationally and featured a program grade point average of nearly 3.00. On the playing field in 2002-03, the athletics campaign was highlighted by a pair of conference titles in women’s basketball and softball. The men’s basketball team also made a postseason appearance, competing in the National Invitation Tournament. Postseason appearances by the WMU football, volleyball and men’s tennis team highlighted the program’s 2000-01 athletic competition.

WMU athletic facilities have greatly improved under Beauregard’s leadership. The $8-million dollar Bill Brown Football Alumni Center and the $21-million Seelye Athletic Indoor Center have benefited numerous sports teams and provide top-notch facilities for Bronco student-athletes. The locker rooms at Lawson Ice Arena were renovated and completed over the past year and the department continues to raise funds for the Hyames Field Renovation Project. WMU is in the midst of building a two million dollar state-of-the-art facility and Field Turf was also installed at Waldo Stadium during the Summer of 2006.

The 1999-2000 campaign was highlighted by the football team’s West Division title and trip to the MAC Championship. The women’s tennis squad captured the MAC Tourney title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight year and the women’s basketball squad made its second-consecutive appearance in the WNIT.

Heavily involved in her profession, Beauregard assumed the chair position of the NCAA Olympic Sports Liaison Committee in 2001, a position which she held for two years. She represented WMU as a member of the NCAA Championships Cabinet and NCAA Football Bowl Certification Committee and currently serves on the NCAA Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

Previously the senior associate athletic director (1993-97), she supervised all revenue sports, the University’s compliance with NCAA rules, academic services, student-athlete welfare, and athletic marketing and communications.

The 2008-09 year saw the Bronco volleyball and men’s tennis programs capture regular season MAC crowns. The volleyball team advanced to the round of 16 at the NCAA Tournament, while the Bronco football team participated in its second bowl in three seasons and the men’s basketball team won yet another MAC West title.

In just her second year (1998-99), Beauregard provided support which helped the Bronco men’s athletic squads jump from 10th to first place in the Reese Cup standings, giving Western Michigan a share of its first all-sports trophy in 17 years.

Beauregard initially came to WMU in 1979 as head women’s gymnastics coach. In nine seasons (1980-88), she produced two MAC title teams and was twice named the conference’s coach of the year. Beauregard has been active in numerous community service organizations, including Kalamazoo Rotary, the American Heart Association, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Glowing Embers Girl Scouts Council.

The 2007-08 academic year saw success within the department, on the playing field and in the classroom. WMU Athletics announced the renovation of historic Hyames Field. Heading into the future, the facility will be known as Robert J. Bobb Stadium and will undergo $2.0 million of work over the next year. Renovations to Sorensen Courts, Fran Ebert Field and upcoming work to the men’s basketball locker rooms all highlight Beauregard’s dedication to moving WMU Athletics forward.

Honored by numerous organizations throughout her career, Beauregard was awarded both the Woman of Achievement Award (YWCA) and Athena Award (Kalamazoo Chamber of Commerce) in 2002.

Athletically, WMU’s tennis programs found success yet again with both winning a regular season MAC title and the men’s program capturing the tournament title to earn a berth in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Both Dave Morin and Besty Kuhle were named MAC Coaches of the Year for the second-straight season. The men’s basketball and women’s volleyball programs captured MAC West titles during the past athletic season. A pair of Bronco track student-athletes earned All-America honors with Becky Horn earning the nod during the indoor and outdoor seasons and finishing third in the 800m at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

In 2000, Beauregard received the Hope College Distinguished Alumni Award from her alma mater.

Beauregard is a native of Kalamazoo and graduate of Loy Norrix High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Hope College in 1979 and a master’s degree from WMU in 1981.

She and husband, Rick, have a 18-year-old son, Brad, who will attend WMU in 2009. Rick retired from Kalamazoo Public Schools after 32 years of service and began Beauregard Home Services in the Fall of 2006.

Beauregard ensured the longevity of WMU’s football and men’s basketball programs by restructuring Bill Cubit’s and Steve Hawkins’ contracts in 2007 and 2008, respectively. WMU Athletics also welcomed Tasha McDowell as the fifth head coach of WMU’s women’s basketball program in 2008. Academically, WMU boasted a pair of Academic All-Americans in Anthony Gebhart (first team) and Joe Reitz (second team). Gebhart was the first football representative since 1998. Volleyball, baseball and gymnastics finished in the top 10 among other like programs in the APR and WMU football had the highest APR score in the MAC for the 2006-07 campaign. Overall, 415 student-athletes finished 2007-08 with a 3.0 or better cumulative GPA. In 2006-07, men’s and women’s tennis not only repeated as MAC Tournament champions but captured regular season titles as well. Both Morin and Kuhle earned MAC Coach of the Year honors. The WMU football team participated in the program’s first postseason bowl game since 1988. The Broncos boasted three NCAA statistical champions in five categories — Ameer Ismail (FB - sacks and tackles for loss); Carrie Moore (WBB - points per game) and Mark Letestu (HOCKEY - freshman scoring and short-handed goals). Western Michigan continued to pursue excellence in the classroom in 2006-07 as 26 student-athletes in 14 sports earned Academic All-MAC status. WMU had five of its programs honored as being in the top-10 percent in their respective sport in the announcement for their excellence in the classroom over the years identified in the most recent APR; baseball, men’s basketball, gymnastics, women’s tennis and volleyball. The Broncos boasted five academic all-district selections and a pair of academic all-americans in Joe Reitz and Carrie Moore. Moore and Ismail earned All-America status in their respective sports with Moore receiving honorable mention for Kodak All-American and Ismail earning Second Team AP All-American.

In 2005-06, Beauregard oversaw a department that captured the Jacoby Cup Trophy, awarded to the top women’s program in the MAC based on sports standings. WMU has now won the Jacoby and Reese (men’s overall sports award) trophies during Beauregard’s tenure. The Broncos garnered three regular season titles — gymnastics, softball and women’s tennis and two MAC Tournament titles — gymnastics and women’s tennis. Under Beauregard’s direction, WMU also won its 100th MAC title all-time in 2005-06. The 2004-05 athletic campaign continued what has become common place at Western Michigan. Team and individual success began in the fall and continued through the spring, highlighted by a MAC Championship in women’s tennis. The strength of the women’s programs as a group allowed WMU to finish second in the Jacoby Cup.
