Legend Lygon Precinct Uptown Precinct Greek Precinct Chinatown Little Collins St Precinct Atmosphere as the ‘the pervading tone or mood of a place’ Different parts of the transect have different atmospheres. To identify these different atmospheres in the transect, Lynch’s (1960) classification of districts was used, where a district is identified as a space where an observer mentally enters “inside of”. The City of Melbourne identifies such districts as precincts within the city where each precinct/district has its common identifying character which can be experienced as a pedestrian (Lynch 1960). The common identifying character within a district is often related to the functions of buildings within an area (e.g. ‘Uptown precinct’, identified as such because of the dominance of residential use within the precinct). An additional feature which influences the atmosphere of the area is the pedestrian flows into and out of buildings; much of it also has to do with experiential observations of the sites (e.g. ‘Lygon precinct’ identified as such for the dominant Italian culture in the location).
