Tom Brom, best mechanic three times

By Frankie Fuller Special to the Union

___________________________________ Brom’s Tire & Auto Repair is the quintessential family business. Owned and operated by his wife Lisa of 34 years, his two daughters, Savannah, 27, and Kaitlin, 22, the four of them have provided basic auto repair services in Fort Atkinson since the business opened in November, 1994, almost 19 years ago. He’s proud of the fact that his daughters can do oil changes, change and balance tires, and other regular maintenance tasks. They drive the cars in and out of the service stalls and help with the added services that Tom provides, like cleaning the cars. Tom says, “I’m not the best mechanic in BEST MECHANIC — Tom Brom, owner of Brom’s Tire & Auto the world, but I do try to provide the best has been voted best mechanic three times. service. We go the extra mile to help peoother providers for services that he is unable to prople and give them what they want.” His older brother, Randy, agrees. “Tom likes to please vide. “At least people know they won’t be gypped.” Tom’s older daughter Savannah now works as a maeverybody. He bends over backward to get a job done rine biologist in Moody Gardens, a nature education and get whatever the customer needs.” Tom is also willing to make recommendations to destination resort and research foundation in Galves-

ton, Texas. Kaitlin is employed full-time at Nasco, but spends time with her father at the shop when she gets some extra time off. When asked about a memorable repair, he relayed the story about the false teeth he dug out of the dash of a car one time. A customer had put their teeth on the dash and they fell into the defroster vent when he braked. Tom had to take the heater and the defroster apart to retrieve the teeth. Tom has been working in the field since he held his first job with George Jones when he was 15 years old. He also worked at the Amoco across the street for Denny Farrow. And Tom hires some students during the summer. He says this is a good field in which to work. Many car repairs require advanced knowledge and skills so Tom suggests that anyone who wants a career in car mechanics and Repair maintenance should get an equivalent advanced education. “Go to school. Learn computerized stuff. It’s a good field to get into. So much to learn and keep up with. People will hire you if you know your stuff,” he says. “But if you’re going to have your own business, treat people right,” he asserts.

Paddy’s is voted best bar, has best bartender

By Paris Knox Union staff writer

___________________________________________ FORT ATKINSON — If you’re looking for a pint, a sandwich, some live music or even a slice of Guinness cake, Paddy Coughlin’s Pub in Fort Atkinson is the place to go. The pub opened in February 2010 with Joe and Tony Landowski. Brandon and Erin Housley purchased Paddy’s just over a year ago. “Joe and Tony named it after their mother, Patricia. Coughlin was her maiden name, so that’s where Paddy Coughlin comes in. Paddy was her nickname,” explained Erin Housley. Housley has been in the restaurant industry for 14 years, and started bartending at Paddy’s shortly after the bar opened under the Landowskis. “I came in on a busy night, and Joe was behind the bar,” she said. “He said ‘I don’t want to do this anymore, do you have your bartending license?’ I said, ‘Yes I do.’ He said I was hired and started the next day.” The Housleys try to run Paddy’s in the same family-run way in which it was under the previous owners. “Joe and Tony made it a family-oriented business, we’ve tried to do the same. Our mothers both come in and clean on a weekly basis for us, and our fathers are

the repairmen and the beer and vodka tasters — to make sure everything’s up to snuff,” said Housley. Paddy’s offers a good variety of dishes, a stellar Friday fish fry, and of course, their famous burgers and Reuben sandwiches. “James Garthwait and Ulices Mendoza are our two kitchen members, and they have been really great at menu items. They are fabulous at putting meals out quickly, accurately and deliciously. We have a tiny, tiny little kitchen; it’s smaller than most peoples’ home kitchens. They can throw the meals out there like it’s nothing. I’m impressed with all of our staff,” said Housley. Every sandwich at Paddy’s can be made gluten-free. “That’s been very popular for people who haven’t BEST BAR — Paddy Coughlin’s Irish Pub was voted been able to have a hamburger for a long time,” exthe best bar this year, and Jerry Fitzgerald, who has plained Housley. been with the bar since the beginning, was voted best As well as sandwiches, Paddy’s also has glubartender in the area. ten-free dressings, and even gluten-free cheesecake by Swirl Cheesecake on occasion. home to me.” While the bar is relatively new, there’s something She maintained that her favorite thing about Padabout Paddy’s that feels like it has always been there. dy’s is the clientele. “We get that comment a lot, customers come in and “We want to thank our customers for their loyalty, they think that we’ve been here forever,” said Housley. and if there was a best customer category, we would “I have a very great passion for this place, it feels like have voted for them.”

Lunch at Brickhaus CafĂŠ voted the best

By Lydia Statz Union staff writer

___________________________________________ JEFFERSON — She might be young, but Sarah Lembrich is a natural restaurateur. The nearly 26-year-old owner of The Brickhaus CafĂŠ, voted the area’s Best Lunch in this year’s readership poll, proves that age is no object when it comes to running an eatery. The Helenville native graduated from Jefferson High School and found her calling in a part-time job. “During college I worked at a cafĂŠ at UW-LaCrosse and just really enjoyed it,â€? she said. “As soon as I got employed there I knew that’s what I wanted to do.â€? After graduating with a business management degree in 2008 and moving back home, she began looking for places to open her own cafĂŠ. With the market in a downturn, though and appealing property hard to come by, she found the perfect location in a place she wasn’t even looking. “My brother originally owned this property and was trying to sell it for quite a while, but since the market had fallen it just wasn’t selling. He was just joking around with me like ‘Hey, I’ve got a place you could put a cafĂŠ in,’â€? Lembrich said. At first she couldn’t see the potential in the 126 E.

Milwaukee St. building, but after a second tour she began to change her mind. “I realized, you know, since he can’t fill it, we might as well do something with it. So I started construction in 2008 and it took two years for it to kind of get completed.â€? The Brickhaus CafĂŠ opened November 1, 2010, though in a slightly different form from the way customers know it today. “At first I expected it to be more of like a cafĂŠ, serving coffee. I love the atmosphere of cafĂŠs and the customers and people who work there and everything,â€? said Lembrich. “It has kind of morphed into more of a restaurant.â€? with customers. “We are constantly amazed by the commitment of our associates. Whether it’s going out of their way for a customer or helping out a colleague in a time of need, they are all there when something arises,” Knickrehm continued. “Creating a family atmosphere has gone a long way in the way that we have done business. We look for associates who live within the communities they work. It’s important for us to know they understand the community in which they work.” Among the new services they provide, they have smartphone classes, free, once a month at Dwight Foster Public Library. The classes help people become more comfortable using the phone. Some people come with new phones they recently have purchased while others come to become better buyers of phones they plan to purchase. The class builds people’s confidence to know what apps to download and how to use them. mkCellular is committed to giving back to the communities where they are located. Their mission is not to be just another phone provider but a real, tangible part of the communities where they work. mkCellular is most proud of what they’ve done in Jefferson County because they have such loyal customers. They cannot say enough about the support the local communities have shown them over the years.

_______________________________________________ FORT ATKINSON — The first mkCellular “office” was a car from which Mark Erdmann sold phones going to people’s houses and businesses in 1998. In 2001, he opened a 10 ft. x 10 ft. storefront located across the street from what is now the Fort Atkinson Walgreen’s. In March, 2004, mkCellular set up shop in the 1000 block of Madison Avenue where they are currently located. They have steadily been growing since 2001 and today, they host a total of eight storefronts with 30 associates in the following communities: Fort Atkinson, Jefferson, Elkhorn, Lake Mills, Watertown, Columbus, Juneau and Twin Lakes. Mark and Karen Erdmann are the owners, they are the strategic visionaries for the company and how it operates. “Doing the right things for the right reasons,” is the motto that appears on their website, www.mkcellular.com, and it is a serious part of their business. Kory Knickrehm is the General Manager and, along with Mike Ehlers, is responsible for implementing their plans. “Mark has an amazing ability to see things before they happen. China One, best oriental food for two years running By Chris Welch Union staff writer

___________________________________________ FORT ATKINSON — Just because you’re the new kid on the block doesn’t mean you are the best kid on the block… unless of course, you’re selling really yummy Chinese food. For the second time Fort Atkinson’s China One was voted Best of the Area’s Oriental Food category. That is quite an accomplishment for a business that has only been around for two and half years. China One is a family-run business, according to owner Qin Zhong Zheng and his daughter Xiu Mei Zheng. “This makes us very proud,” Xiu Mei said about winning the Daily Jefferson County Union’s annual Best of The Area Oriental Food Award for a second time. “We want to thank all of our customers,” she added. “We want to thank all of them, whether they voted for us or not; it is due to our customers that we are able to stay in business and do so well.” The Zhengs said that the most popular items ordered by customers include crab rangoons, egg rolls, General Tso chicken and sesame chicken. “I really like the sesame chicken too,” Xiu Mei said. “That is one of my favorites.” Qin Zhong said he really likes to cook lo mein noo-

dles, and they are another popular dish. “Good food is what keeps customers coming back,” Xiu Mei said. “But we also have a very clean restaurant and a friendly staff, and that brings people back, too. We also have big portions for our food.” Yes. The food. Let’s talk more about the food. “We use only fresh food, not frozen,” Xiu Mei said, adding that is the key to the good meals that keeps their loyal customers coming back. “We cut all of our vegetables ourselves. Also, we make everything, as much as possible, by hand. That helps us keep our costs down, and that also makes the customers happy, too,” Xiu Mei explained. RM Small Engine Repair is one of the area’s best By Ryan Whisner Regional editor

___________________________________________ FORT ATKINSON — If good customer service is the benchmark by which a business measures its success, and if winning the Daily Jefferson County Union’s Best of the Area is affirmation of that benchmark, then RM Small Engine Repair is on the right track. For the past six years voters have told Roy Magsamen that his business is the Best of the Area lawnmower/snowblower store. Located at 1250 Farmco Lane in Fort Atkinson, RM Small Engine has been operating since 1998. Magsamen had been repairing small engines for nearly 20 years when he decided to move his engine repair workshop out of his home. His main line of products is Toro and Dixon. “I think they have something to offer for anybody’s needs,” Magsamen said. “When I was in high school, my very first job after working as a paperboy was working for the late Tom Goyer at the hardware store,” said Magsamen. Goyer encouraged him to learn the small engine repair. Magsamen started regularly fixing the small engine items at Ace Hardware. A radio announcement of a grant-funded Business Plan Boot Camp offered by the University of Wiscon-

sin-Whitewater Small Business Development Center (SBDC) inspired Magsamen to contact the center and enroll in the program. “The Business Plan Boot Camp was a real eye-opener in terms of letting you know that you can’t just turn the key and go,” he said. As part of the Boot Camp program, Magsamen, with assistance from SBDC director Ronald “Bud” Gayhart, completed financial statements showing projected cash flow, income and expenses for the first three years. Looking at these projections, Magsamen discovered that his business, as planned, would not be profitable. Breaking into the market as a newcomer with few customers seemed too risky. It looked like Magsamen’s dream of running BEST LAWNMOWER/SNOWBLOWER STORE — a small-engine repair business would not be reRM Small Engine in Fort Atkinson has won this category alized. Q. Can Investors Learn from Earth Day's Lessons? A. Next week, we observe Earth Day. Can you apply some of the lessons of Earth Day to your

approach to investing? For example, Earth Day stresses the proper management of resources. As an investor, you can make the most of your existing resources by contributing as much as you can afford to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. Also, Earth Day teaches us to cut down on unnecessary consumption. In the investment arena, you can “over-consume” by making excessive trades. Too much buying and selling can result in significant fees, transaction Brendon Diers, AAMS costs and even taxes. Instead, consider purchasing quality investments and holding them for the long term. Finally, Earth Day warns us about putting toxins in our environment. When you invest, Financial Advisor it's important to avoid “toxic” behavior, such as chasing after hot stocks or making vain attempts to “time” the market. By following these Earth Day-related suggestions, you can help yourself make progress toward a healthier — and possibly more productive — investment environment.

A. No, It is not! If Dr. Oz had consulted the overwhelming majority of scientific evidence, he would have spoken differently. Silver amalgam fillings are estimated to be present in the mouths of 100 million people. They are durable, inexpensive, long lasting and safe. In a March 28th Dr. Oz Show episode titled “Are your silver fillings making you sick?,” Dr. Oz and a guest dentist blamed silver amalgam fillings for being toxic and for causing neurological symptoms, fatigue, headaches and autoimmune disorders. He makes sensational statements without strong scientific evidence to support the accusations. Multiple health and safety organizations including the American Dental Association, the CDC, the FDA, the Mayo Clinic, the MS Society, the Autism Society and the EPA all support that there is little scientific evidence to show that the health of people is compromised from Silver amalgam teeth fillings. Silver amalgam is one of several safe and effective choices available to dental patients. Over the last several years, technology has developed alternative materials, such as composite resin (white fillings), that many dentists consider to be better for a variety of reasons. Every filling option has pros and cons so talk to your dentist. If you have further questions contact our office for an appointment or ask your dentist.

Q. My child’s friends take all kinds of lessons. Am I depriving my son because he does not?

A. Many children seem to spend their week being taken from

one kind of lesson to the next. For some children, added on top of school-work, this “over-scheduling” can lead to anxiety and not enough unstructured time to enjoy being a child. While it can be fun and beneficial to introduce your child to a sport or some other opportunity to learn something new, be mindful that children need some down time too. Choose wisely and your whole family will be able to enjoy some relaxation time together.

bruising becomes more common with the mildest bump or blow. Our capillaries age and become more fragile and prone to rupture. Our skin also becomes thinner, losing the protective fatty layer that helps to cushion blood vessels against injury. Frequent bruising usually starts to show after age 55, but long-time sun worshippers may see changes earlier. The problem may be compounded if you smoke. Certain dietary supplements such as fish oil and ginkgo, as well as some medications used to treat Stephen Rudolph allergies, asthma and eczema can also cause easier bruising. To reduce bumps and falls, FACHE, CSA de-clutter the house. Dress your elder in long-sleeved shirts and pants to add an extra layer of protection. Limit sun exposure and use sunscreen outdoors. There isn’t much that can be done to treat a bruise once it has formed. Most bruises disappear within a week. Remember, though, that easy bruising can be an indication of a more serious condition such as a blood disease or a clotting problem. You should consult a doctor if you notice unusually large or painful bruises that develop for no reason.

A. As the economy finally picks up steam, it might be a good time to start that new business you always dreamed about. From a tax standpoint, your choice of entity (LLC, Corporation or Sole Proprietorship) is a key issue. Setting up an LLC gives you not only liability protection, but a good deal of tax flexibility. If your business has losses on the front-end, you can deduct those losses, reducing your tax bite from other income. If your business is profitable going forward, you can elect to have your LLC taxed as an S Corporation, and save ongoing taxes – especially employment taxes – by structuring your compensation to take advantage of S Corporation rules. There are plenty of tax pitfalls to navigate when setting up a new business. We have extensive experience helping small businesses maximize their tax savings, so if you’re starting up a business, give us a call.

Q. I

PHYSICAL THERAPY

CHIROPRACTOR

Q. As part of my running workouts, I have been doing more interval training and

have a referral for Physical Therapy for hip and leg pain with a diagnosis of “piriformis syndrome.” What is this?

Susan Armstrong, MPT Physical Therapist

A. The piriformis muscle is a deep muscle located in the posterior hip area beneath the gluteal muscles. It assists with stabilizing the pelvis, external rotation the hip joint, and provides support of the femur while in a standing position. The piriformis muscle and tendon are located in close proximity to the main nerve roots that form the sciatic nerve. When the piriformis muscle is strained or has increased tension, it causes compression of the sciatic nerve, resulting in pain, radiating symptoms and altered sensation into the low back and leg. Thus, a diagnosis of Piriformis Syndrome and Sciatica are often overlapping. Treatment of this diagnosis can be effectively completed by a skilled Physical Therapist. Contact Stellar Rehabilitation for more information and treatment of this painful and limiting condition. Comprehensive Therapy Services 1049 N. have developed pain in the top part of my hamstring. I have been stretching it but it does not seem to be getting any better. How would you recommend treating it?

A.

It sounds like you may have strained the biceps femoris tendon or more simply, the upper hamstring attachment. This is a common injury for runners doing speed work or stride work. You can continue to stretch the hamstrings, but you should only do so to the point that you feel the stretch in the middle of the muscle, not at the upper attachment point. Stretching too far only re-aggravates injury. Also, get a sport specific massage to treat the injury. Treatment should consist of a technique called cross fiber friction followed by icing of the area. This treatment only takes 15 minutes 1-2 times per week for approximately 4 weeks. It is a very effective and economical treatment that promotes proper healing. Lastly, watch your form. You should be working to strike the ground mid-foot and not with a heavy heel strike. Striding too far out and landing on the heel will also re-aggravate this type of injury. Lee Unwin, CMT, CSCS

Suger Creek Elementary School’s art night turned out to be a colorful array of paints, clay and more. Kids and parents packed into the gym to make create original artwork at stations. Also featured was a station where people could make art (top left) by dipping marbles in paint and rolling them around in a cardboard box to create works. At that station are, left to right, Carson Lindell (in green), Charlie Thusius (in blue) and mother Krista Thusius, Julia Gliboy and Callum Vass. for an assisted living facility, stress and fear can elevate. The thought of leaving everything familiar, including friends and neighbors can be overwhelming. Your mother might also be feeling a loss of independence. It’s important to realize that all of these feelings are normal. However, you can help make this transition easier for her. Acknowledge her feelings and comfort her. Offer to take her on regular visits to see her old friends whenever she wants to go. Set up a schedule with her (maybe weekly or bi-weekly in Carman Vargas Admissions/Lodge Manager the beginning) and involve her in the planning of where you will go and who you will visit. It’s also very important to encourage new friendships in her new location. Offer to accompany her to social events which will reduce anxiety and help her feel more relaxed and comfortable. Over time, your mother will make new friends, and find happiness and peace in her new home. For any questions on assisted living, or the steps you can take in planning, call Four Winds, we can help!

that assemble the basic coverages required by a business owner in one bundle. Such coverages include business interruption insurance, property insurance, liability insurance, commercial auto insurance, crime insurance, etc. Based on your company’s specific needs, you can alter what is included in a BOP. Typically, a business owner will save money by choosing a BOP because the bundle of coverage often costs less than the total cost of all the individual policies on their own. These policies usually target small to medium size businesses, and offer an opportunity to save money and increase your coverage at the same time. A win-win! and more direct sunlight. Just looking outside can make you feel good. And when your window treatments help you save on energy dollars, you can feel even better! There are many great window fashions products and styles that will preserve your views of the outdoors, allowing varying degrees of sunlight in, while keeping harmful direct sunlight’s UV rays from damaging your interiors. Some have the quality of reflecting what overheats your rooms in full summer sun, saving you valuable heating and cooling dollars. The right shading choices can add custom tailored beauty to your home, so you can save money and upgrade your home at the same time!

It is not farfetched, then, to relate good dental health to a longer life. TEETH AND INCREASED LIFE SPAN Question: Is it true that good teeth can increase life span? Answer: Research is beginning to reveal the importance of good dental health. The Mayo clinic, for example, has shown that older people with their natural teeth tend to live 10 years longer on average, than thoe who have lost their teeth. As we age, it is increasingly important to have a proper diet, more so than at any other time in our lives. A healthy caloric intake is made possible if the older person is using

Care Act (ACA) to provide BadgerCare to low-income adults. Unfortunately, the state budget proposed by Governor Walker and currently being considered by legislators rejects the additional federal Medicaid dollars. It makes one group of adults—those below the poverty line and without children—eligible for BadgerCare, but disqualifies another group that is currently eligible for coverage: parents above the poverty line but still lowincome. They expect these parents to buy insurance through the “exchanges” being developed. But these exchanges are not designed to serve this population, and realistically we know that many low-income parents will simply not be able to afford coverage in the private marketplace. The result would likely be more uninsured people, and higher costs to the state.

Each year, the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation release County Health Rankings (http:// countyhealthrankings. org), which assess nearly every county in the country based on such factors as childhood poverty rate, smoking, obesity, teen birth rates, access to physicians and dentists, and many other health measures. Using this information, leaders can see where their communities are doing well and where there is room for improvement. One of the most basic ways to improve is to increase access to care by reducing the number of people without health insurance. Right now, we’re in the midst of a critical policy debate about how Wisconsinites are going to get coverage--specifically, whether or not to accept the federal dollars made available by the Affordable

Steven Harris

Harris, a senior, was Middleton’s MVP last year and is off to a roaring start again. Harris recently won the 800-meter run and anchored Middleton’s first place 1,600-meter relay team at the Watertown Invitational. He was second in the 800 at the 25-team Nelson Daniels Invite. Harris was also third in the 1,600 and anchored the third place 1,600-meter relay team at the Madison West Relays. “Steven is the perfect anchor for a 1,600 and a 3,200,” Middleton coach Isaac Mezera said. “The guys perform better just knowing they can count on him to bring it home.”

Bobbi Patrick Patrick, a sophomore, has already competed in six different events — and the Cardinals have had just six meets. Patrick is ranked 14th in the state in the 200 meter run and is part of the Cardinals’ 3,200 meter relay team that’s ranked fourth. Patrick is also a key member of Middleton’s 1,600-meter relay team that’s ranked seventh. “She is a great competitor, which has allowed for a lot of diversity so far this season,” Middleton coach Tara Franklin said of Patrick. “She has a great ‘lead by example’ attitude and is willing and able to run a variety of events. Her sense of humor keeps everyone on their toes … and we are lucky to have her on the MHS track and field team.”

Ballweg, a freshman first baseman, led Middleton on a late-season surge. The Cardinals rolled off four straight wins before falling to DeForest in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal. Ballweg led Middleton with a .448 batting average and was the Cardinals’ leader in on-base percentage (.515). Ballweg finished the year with two home runs, seven doubles and led Middleton in slugging percentage (.672). “We knew Shelby had lots of potential when we brought her up on varsity at the beginning of the season,” Middleton coach Arin Oppermann said. “She could hit the ball hard and could handle the ball well on defense. “She's an extremely focused and hard working player, and it definitely paid off not only for her, but also for us. She worked her way into the starting first base spot early in the season and became our No. 4 batter in our line-up.”

Baseball

836-1601 ...the best in local sports coverage

Reese Felton Felton, a senior right hander, is in the midst of a sensational season. Felton threw a no-hitter against Verona May 10 and hasn’t slowed down since. Felton led Middleton to a 4-1 win over Janesville Craig on May 16 and led the Cardinals to a 14-0 win over Madison La Follette on May 21. Overall, Felton has a 1.48 ERA, has struck out 33 batters in 28 1/3 innings and has walked 22. “Reese has a lot of untapped athletic ability,” Middleton manager Tom Schmitt said. “He is learning to pitch as he goes through his senior year. “He has a bright future in baseball if he chooses to go that route. He has worked at hitting his spots and having the confidence to throw all his pitches at any time to any hitter. “He was overpowering in his no-hit performance. When he has control to throw his curveball for a strike he can be very hard to get a good swing on.”
