The key to a good cocktail shaker is to make sure the bottom part fits into the top part. Also important is to have a copy of the 75-year-old “Mr. Boston’s Official Bartender’s Guide” handy.

Egg & Cheese Flatbread and Canadian Bacon & Cheese French Toast) had a leg up because of the stellar brand reputation. Still, as many times as I’ve eaten at IHOP, I’m not sure I’ve seen these sandwiches on the menu. So IHOP is copying itself — but creating something different, and hoping to sell new products because its old favorites are so popular. Hey, that’s Madonna’s trick! Ninety seconds in the ’wave and one minute of rest (per cooking instructions), and I was totally happy and a little surprised by how good this sandwich tasted. Maple aroma and flavor were everywhere. The egg was a standard rubberized floppy disc. The cheese was clean and melty. The sausage was sweet and really good. The french toast was similar to a McGriddle, about the acreage of a burger bun, without having to wait in the drive-thru. I ate two fast and hid the box so nobody else would get to it. That’s how you can tell I like something: The good stuff is in the back of my freezer. Here’s a laugh: The box also contains cooking instructions for a conventional oven: “Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Separate sandwich in half and wrap loosely with foil. Place on baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes. Carefully remove from oven and let stand for one minute before serving.” The whole idea of a frozen breakfast at home is to nuke it fast and eat it on your way out the door. If you follow the conventional-oven instructions, it’ll be lunchtime by the time it’s ready.

Q: My sister-in-law and her husband are novice cocktail makers. Do you have advice on how to choose a cocktail shaker and a good basic cocktail book? A: Making cocktails is a hobby of my husband’s, so I asked him to step in on this question. His advice on a good shaker for a beginner: Look for one where the mixing glass, or the bottom section, is “male” and the top is “female,” or fits over the bottom section. Some strainers fit inside the bottom and can leak if the two pieces aren’t firmly seated. It’s also nice to get a three-piece set, with a mixing glass, strainer and stopper. There are shelves of cocktail books. But “Mr. Boston’s Official Bartender’s Guide” has been a standard for 75 years. It covers all the classics and is a great place to start.
This week I reached into the frozen-food case at my local supermarket for a French Toast Maple Sausage, Egg and Cheese Breakfast Sandwich, new from the “IHOP at Home” series of home copycats. Whew, that’s a mouthful. I hope this sandwich matches up. Usually, I’m wary of supermarket versions of fast-food or diner delights. It’s virtually impossible to duplicate the fresh, hot taste and ambience of being served by real-life human beings. Nathan’s Famous hot dogs from the supermarket bear little resemblance to the authentic Nathan’s tube steaks that Joey Chestnut crushes on July 4 at Coney Island. I once bought frozen White Castle burgers from Costco (the 500-count “small” pack), and they’re still sitting in the freezer in my garage. I love my short stacks at IHOP, so let’s see how the home version stacks up. Here’s the IHOP at Home French Toast Breakfast Sandwich blueprint: a slice of maple-flavored sausage, an egg patty and American cheese between two slices of round french toast. Total calories: 290. Fat grams: 16. Sodium: 650 mg. Dietary fiber: less than 1 g. Protein: 13 g. Carbs: 23 g. Manufacturer’s suggested retail price: $5.99 for a fourpack. But try your luck for a coupon at www.ihop.com. It’s unfair to compare this breakfast sandwich with a sit-down breakfast at one of the 1,600 IHOP restaurants across America, plus the first IHOP in an airport. (Layovers are a little less torture at Hartsfield Airport in Atlanta.) IHOP is one of the great dependables in quick-service meals. Their buttermilk pancakes are first-ballot Hall of Famers, and their omelettes are fluffy and delicious. The secret to their omelettes? There’s a shot of pancake batter in the mix. I’ve never been a fan of frozen breakfasts from the supermarket in general. Leggo my Eggo? No problem. You can have it. IHOP frozen breakfast sandwiches (also Bacon,

path, saying authorities could not confirm whether it was a hijacking. Earlier Saturday, a Malaysian official said the plane had been hijacked, though he added that no motive had been established and no demands had been made known. “In view of this latest development, the Malaysian authorities have refocused their investigation into the crew and passengers on board,” Najib told reporters, reading from a written statement but not taking any questions. Police on Saturday went to the Kuala Lumpur homes of both the pilot and co-pilot of the missing plane, according to a guard and several local reporters. Authorities have said they will investigate the pilots as part of their probe, but have released no information about how they are progressing. The plane departed for an overnight flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing at 12:40 a.m. on March 8. Its communications with civilian air controllers were severed at about 1:20 a.m., and the jet went missing — heralding one of the most puzzling mysteries in modern aviation history. China, where the bulk of the passengers were from, expressed irritation over what it described as Malaysia’s foot-dragging in releasing information about the search.
System disabled Investigators now have a high degree of certainty that one of the plane’s communications systems — the Aircraft and Communications Addressing and Reporting System, or ACARS — was partially disabled before the aircraft reached the east coast of Malaysia, Najib said. Shortly afterward, someone
on board switched off the aircraft’s transponder, which communicates with civilian air traffic controllers. Najib confirmed that Malaysian air force defense radar picked up traces of the plane turning back westward, crossing over Peninsular Malaysia into the northern stretches of the Strait of Malacca. Authorities previously had said this radar data could not be verified. “These movements are consistent with deliberate action by someone on the plane,” Najib said. Although the aircraft was flying virtually blind to air traffic controllers at this point, onboard equipment continued to send “pings” to satellites.
Knew how plane worked U.S. aviation safety experts say the shutdown of communications systems makes it clear the missing Malaysia Airlines jet was taken over by someone who knew how the plane worked. Malaysia’s prime minister said the last confirmed signal between the plane and a satellite came at 8:11 a.m. — 7 hours and 31 minutes after takeoff. This was more than five hours later than the previous time given by Malaysian authorities as the possible last contact. Airline officials have said the plane had enough fuel to fly for up to about eight hours. “The investigations team is making further calculations which will indicate how far the aircraft may have flown after this last point of contact,” Najib said. He said authorities had determined that the plane’s last communication with a satellite was in one of two possible arcs, or “corridors” — a northern one from northern Thailand through

CHICAGO (AP) — The Mega Millions jackpot has grown to an estimated $400 million. No one matched all six numbers in Friday night’s drawing. The numbers were 7-20-40-54-69, with a Mega Ball of 12. Friday’s $353 million prize would have been the fifth-largest jackpot in the multistate lottery game’s history. The next drawing is Tuesday. The jackpot has been rolling since Jan. 3. The biggest lottery prize in the U.S. was a $656 million dollar Mega Millions jackpot in 2012. Mega Millions changed its rules in October to help increase jackpots by lowering the odds of winning the top prize. That means the chances of winning the jackpot are now about 1 in 259 million. It used to be about 1 in 176 million.
to the border of the Central Asian countries Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, and a southern one from Indonesia to the southern Indian Ocean. The northern route might theoretically have taken the plane through China, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan — which hosts U.S. military bases — and Central Asia, and it is unclear how it might have gone undetected. The region is also home to extremist Islamist groups, unstable governments and remote, sparsely populated areas. Flying south would have put the plane over the Indian Ocean, with an average depth of 12,762 feet and thousands of miles from the nearest land mass. Britain-based aviation security consultant Chris Yates thought it was highly unlikely the plane would have taken the northern route across land in Asia. “In theory, any country that sees a strange blip is going to get fighter planes up to have a look,” he said. “And if those fighter planes can’t make head or tail of what it is, they will shoot it down.”

Journey Buffet & Grill’s variety, reasonable prices bring people in By Samara Kalk Derby Wisconsin State Journal MADISON
Maybe I was alone in my appreciation of Oysy Sushi & Seafood Buffet, which opened in 2009 and lasted less than two years on Madison’s East Washington Avenue. It never really seemed to catch fire with its $22 dinner price tag (lunch was $11). Now, not far away, comes The Journey Buffet & Grill, which is a lot more affordable than Oysy was, with a $12.95 dinner and $8.45 lunch. And the place is packing ’em in. Interestingly, even when every table was occupied, there always seemed to be ample elbow room at the steam tables. Besides about 25 kinds of sushi, Journey devotes as much or more space to Chinese food and seafood items, such as whole steamed crab and large peel-and-eat
shrimp. It also offers several choices for those who don’t eat seafood, including pork ribs and large slices of kielbasa. I appreciate how Journey has a to-go option with separate per-pound prices for seafood and sushi. I filled up a large container of maki one afternoon for about the price you’d pay for a small, sad container of supermarket sushi, and Journey’s was much fresher and more robust. Among Journey’s best rolls are the orange, crab-topped shark king roll; the crunch roll; the mango roll; the rainbow roll; the shrimp-topped monster roll; and the volcano roll with tuna on top. The Alaska, Philly and teriyaki chicken rolls also were worthwhile. The giant shrimp tempura was a mouthful and not something that should sit around, even for a few minutes. The tempura shell gets soggy fast. But on a buffet table, there is obviously no
peak. Hot and sour soup is a good measure of any Chinese restaurant, and Journey’s was thick, packed with mushrooms and other ingredients, and appropriately spicy. Mushroom lovers will appreciate the large, whole mushrooms sauteed in butter and the mushroom caps stuffed with a nicely spicy chicken sausage. The pot stickers were a bit too crisp the dish saltier. way around that. Sashimi was sparse on my visits, and the thick piece of salmon I tried was largely tasteless. It also had a slightly strange aftertaste. The nigiri—both the whitefish and tuna—also was lacking, with rice that was a bit crusty. So, in subsequent visits I just stuck to the rolls and some of the Chinese food offerings, such as the seafood delight packed with mediumsized shrimp in a light oyster sauce. My companion on one visit called them “splendid” but added soy sauce to make
cream with chocolate syrup. I saw one little girl clapping as her mother swirled her ice cream cone. One negative about this attractive, Asian version of HomeTown Buffet is the unwelcome seafood odor that greets you in the entryway. It sort of smells like a fish market. And maybe that can’t be helped. Fortunately, it’s not a problem inside. Also, some of the hot food was only room temperature. Maybe the steam tables are less hot to keep items from getting dried out, and perhaps the balance is a bit off. Journey’s spot, adjacent to the Target parking lot, has been a revolving door for restaurants including My Buddies, Babe’s Sports Grill, the Tilted Kilt and Damon’s over the past 15 years. Judging by the crowds that are flocking here now, Journey is going to stick around for a while. You might just start clapping, too.

Blast, bar fight, bus crash among top videos for 2014 By Andrew Reuter areuter@gazettextra.com A house explosion, a bar fight and a bus crashing into a building are among the subjects of GazetteXtra’s top videos for 2014. Starting at the bottom, here are the most-watched videos: No. 1: Water main break sends water, debris shooting into air Date: March 16 Summary: This video shows a water main break that sent debris and water shooting 30 feet into the air and created a 20-foot hole in a street in Janesville. Debris likely partially plugged the break, causing the geyser, water department crew foreman Mike Fosmoen said.
“It’s lucky that happened, or this break could have collapsed almost the whole street,” he said. No.2: Video shows Janesville bus crashing into duplex Date: Aug. 13 Summary: A Janesville city bus driver crashed into the front of a duplex after swerving to avoid another driver who failed to yield the right of way. The video, taken from three separate cameras on the bus, shows the bus driver being thrown from her seat during the initial crash with a car. A later investigation revealed that the bus driver’s seat belt snapped, police said. No one was in the building during the crash. The driver was taken to a local hospital. Her two passengers suffered bumps and bruises. No. 3: Bar fight leaves
woman seriously injured Date: Nov. 25, 2013 Summary: This graphic security camera footage from 2013 shows a bar fight that left a bystander with serious injuries. In the video, a woman dumps her drink on a man at the bar. The man then turns and rifles a bottle at the back of the woman’s head, sending glass shards flying into the face of a bystander. The footage, described as “shocking” by Janesville Police Chief David Moore, led to the closure of the bar. No.4: Blast during house fire rocks nearby home Date: May 12 Summary: This video of a Beloit house fire shows a blast big enough to engulf a building. Neighbor Jim Tropp, who caught the blaze on video, said

No. 5: Janesville police body camera footage shows rooftop rescue Date: April 25 Summary: Video taken from the body camera of Janesville

Murder, Internet outage among Gazette’s top web stories By Andrew Reuter areuter@gazettextra.com Tragedy is a common thread in four out of five of 2014’s most popular stories on GazetteXtra. That is to be expected. But the one story on this list that isn’t tragic might surprise you. The top stories, as measured by pageviews, were: No.1: Driver, Infiniti SUV sought in double-fatal accident Date: April 20 Synopsis: Investigators asked for the public’s help in finding the driver of an SUV that struck and killed two motorcyclists in Janesville. Law enforcement officials later credited stories such as this one with helping track down Sambath Pal, who eventually pleaded guilty to two counts of hit-and-run involving death. He was sentenced Oct. 1 to 20 years in prison. No.2: Charter Internet down Saturday Date: Aug. 23 Synopsis: A Charter Internet outage affected customers across the U.S., including southern Wisconsin. The problem was so widespread
that people calling Charter customer service got a busy signal. Some Internet users have speculated the company was the target of a hacker attack, but Charter has stayed silent. No. 3: Anchor Inn fire cost put at $500,000 to $1 million Date: Aug. 4 Synopsis: An early morning fire gutted the Anchor Inn, a town of Fulton bar with a structure dating to the 1860s. What remained of the building came down at the end of August. Owners John and Dawn Kinnett at the end of November announced plans to rebuild. The new structure should be about triple the size of the old one, with wood and stone being used to remind visitors of the original building. No. 4: Illinois man arrested in Janesville motorcycle deaths Date: April 25 Synopsis: This story was an update to a hit-and-run crash that claimed the lives of two Janesville motorcyclists. Sambath Pal of Illinois was arrested and charged in the deaths of Mitchell J. Vance, 24, and Devin J.
Julius, 18, both of Janesville. Court records later revealed that Pal’s father turned him in. “He kept telling us he thought he had to be a good citizen, and even though it was his son, he had to do the right thing,” Sheriff Robert Spoden said. No. 5: Woman’s body found in Janesville; more could be coming, police fear Date: May 5 Synopsis: Three incidents combined to make this one of our mostread stories: a near fatal stabbing, the murder of Britney Cross and the disappearance of Mary Coulthard. Clayton Courtney, arrested in connection with the stabbing, told police he had killed three other people, officials said. Police took his claim seriously. Today, Courtney is in custody facing charges of homicide and attempted homicide in connection with the stabbing and murder, but Coulthard’s disappearance was found to be unrelated. Her body was pulled from the Rock River on May 9. The cause of death was drowning. No other deaths have been connected to Courtney.

From page 1 Rybarczyk said the town should also integrate more recent census data into its plan. The current plan is based off of 2000 census data. With 2010 data now accessible, he said it could be useful in the plan’s issues and opportunities, housing and land use plan elements sections. The process will include one staff meeting, two Plan Commission meetings and two board meetings, at which the public will be allowed to weigh in on the proposed changes. The entire Comprehensive Plan update process will cost the town an estimated $17,700, Rybarczyk said. Supervisor Monica Smith requested a cost breakdown to know how Rybarczyk arrived at that figure. Rybarczyk said it accounts for 160 hours of work, a rate of about $110 per hour. Town Engineer Kevin Richardson affirmed that the rate was reasonable, saying he has done comparable work in the past for $140 per hour. Butteris said the town will utilize 2014 planning budgeted funds to cover the cost. Supervisor Alan Buchner
asked Rybarczyk whether, during the update process, staff would be able to consider streamlining the town’s development process, citing the Village of DeForest’s recent change in zoning ordinances. The DeForest Board of Trustees overhauled the village’s development approval processes in October in an effort to attract more economic development. The changes in process included a shift of responsibilities from committees to village staff. Rybarczyk said they would be able to review the town’s process during their staff meeting. Supervisor Bruce Stravinski asked whether two Plan Commission and two board meetings were sufficient to complete the project. Last time Windsor updated its Comprehensive Plan, the plan commission held four meetings. Rybarczyk said, last time, the town “created a plan from scratch.” This time, he said the discussion will be more focused on updating just a few areas. Rybarczyk said they can start the process this week and complete it in three- to four-months. The board approved the comprehensive plan update unanimously, with Supervisor Don Madelung absent.
MEETING FOR PARENTS
Parents invited to alcohol and drug abuse presentations Jan. 30, Feb. 25 DeForest Area School District, police department to co-host two sessions The DeForest Area School District and DeForest Police Department will co-host upcoming Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (AODA) presentations to the DeForest Area community. According to DeForest Police Chief Robert Henze: "It is important to provide awareness and preventive educational material so parents and others can learn the trends and try to stop a loved one from making major life altering decisions. These presentations are purposely focused on warning signs/red flags and steps to take when these signs are noticed." Two awareness and prevention presentations are scheduled for 2014. The first is on Thursday, Jan. 30, and the second is on Tuesday, Feb. 25. Both will be in the Little Theatre at DeForest Area High School, 815 Jefferson St., DeForest, starting at 6 p.m. Detective Sergeant Robert Berg will present information on the progression of substance abuse. A representative from the Parents Addiction Network also will be present to discuss an online resource for families and friends of people battling drug addiction. Both presentations will cover topics such as marijuana, alcohol, heroin, prescription medications, and the Parent Addiction Network of Dane County. In March of this year, the Parent Addiction Network launched a website providing a “one stop shop” of treatment and recovery resources. Located on this website are the answers to the many questions that surround addiction, signs
and symptoms of drug abuse, treatment, insurance, legal issues, overdose, recovery and getting support for family and friends of people in the grip of this disease. Chief Henze was honored to present the BeSafe Award for Collaboration to the Parent Addiction Network at the 7th Annual BeSafe Awards put on by Safe Communities Madison-Dane County Coalition. Visit the Safe Communities website for more detailed information about the Parent Addiction Network at http://www.safercommunity.net/.
ROAD From page 1 they move onto another Dane County host church for a total of up to 90 days in emergency shelter. During that time, the Road Home helps them to secure other housing.
A
LEARNING
EXPERIENCE The volunteers say the hosting experience has taught them a lot. “You learn it can happen to anybody,” Quade said. One mother who secured housing through The Road Home spoke at the Jan. 12 service at First Presbyterian, Quade said, adding, “There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.” The speaker had been an organized, successful person when she and her children ended up homeless, Quade said, and she related how difficult it is to get ready for work without a place to shower or wash clothing. “A lot of the people who are homeless are well educated,” Quade said. But when a crisis hits, many have no family to fall back on, she added. The majority of the homeless parents she encounters have jobs, Quade said. Meeker said volunteering is important to her because she, too, has children. “I think about how many kids in the area that don’t have a place to stay,” she said. “It’s rewarding… knowing that we are part of a stepping stone to getting them to a better place again,” Quade said.
The volunteer coordinators have learned about many individual families’ paths to homelessness. One man who worked in manufacturing lost his job during the Great Recession, Busse said. Just a few months earlier, his wife, who had had a baby, left her job because staying at home would be more economical than paying for childcare. Afterwards, the family had no income. Another family was headed by a returning Iraqi veteran who was unable to find work.
M OVING
HOME
The key to The Road Home’s success in securing permanent housing lies in the case managers, according to Peggy Halloran, development director. They work with families to determine which of six different transitional housing programs will be most suitable. One of them is Housing and Hope, initiated four years ago. During that time, The Road Home has purchased four different apartment buildings to provide affordable housing, Halloran said. “Families are provided with affordable rent,” she said. “They have to pay 30 percent of their income toward rent or a minimum of $200 a month.” Some lack a rental or credit history, and their stay in the The Road Home apartments gives them a chance to establish themselves. Halloran said the average stay is four to six years. “We have had families with success move into other housing and free up spots,” she said.
A
LARGER PROBLEM
The 146 families served by The Road Home last year were just part of the larger homeless picture in Dane County. Halloran said 50 more families are usually on a waiting list to be served. According to the Department of Public Instruction, 1,820 children enrolled in Dane County public schools were homeless in the year 2012-13; statewide, 16,709 students had no permanent home. Fifty-six of those lived in the DeForest School District, and 30 in the Waunakee Community School District. Over the last 10 years, the number of homeless children has tripled, according to the DPI data. Halloran said a scarcity of affordable housing plays
a role in homelessness, but added that a lack of “goodpaying” jobs puts housing financially out of reach for many. “A lot of our families are working, but they tend to work at jobs that are minimum wage,” Halloran said.
To Volunteer Call The Road Home (608) 294-7998 or email info@trhome .org “When you look at what the take home pay is and the monthly expenses, it’s very hard for them to afford housing.”

BRIEFS Pregnant woman sexually assaulted MADISON (AP) — The men accused of severely beating a man and repeatedly sexually assaulting his pregnant wife may have meant to target a different home for a robbery, authorities said. Three men face sexual assault and armed robbery charges after police said they broke into a Madison home looking for money, found the couple lying in bed and assaulted the woman, who was six months pregnant, after beating her husband. But a criminal complaint shows a woman may have sought to send the men to rob the home of a man she was dating. The complaint filed Tuesday details a botched robbery plan that may have been intended to target the victims’ neighbor. Authorities said Efemia A. Neumaier told the assailants they’d find at least $1,500 in cash in the home of the man she was seeing, but that the men broke into the wrong home.
Investigator wants judge to toss lawsuit MADISON (AP) — An investigator working on a secret investigation into campaign fundraising and spending has asked a judge to toss out a lawsuit seeking to end the probe. The investigation is reportedly looking into activity by Republican Gov. Scott Walker’s campaign, Wisconsin Club for Growth and other conservative groups that Scott were heavily involved Walker in recall elections targeting Walker and state senators. Club for Growth filed a federal lawsuit last month asking U.S. District Judge Rudolph T. Randa to halt the investigation, arguing it violates their free speech, freedom of assembly and equal protection rights.
Affordable cancer drug measure stalls despite support in state Senate MADISON (AP) — There are enough votes in the state Senate to pass a bipartisan bill that would make cancer drugs more affordable, but Republican Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald Scott said WednesFitzgerald day he won’t allow it to come up because a majority of Republicans don’t support it. Fitzgerald commented when asked about an unusual procedural move that prevented any senator, Republican or Democrat, from attempting to force a vote on the measure. “We just don’t want that to happen with an issue we take very seriously,” Fitzgerald said.
Insurers oppose bill The bill would require insurance plans overseen by the state to provide coverage for expensive forms of chemotherapy drugs that patients take as pills rather than injections. While a broad array of cancer support and health advocacy groups support the measure, it is opposed by health insurers that fear it will drive up costs. Cancer patients have been pushing for the bill for years, citing insurance co-pays for the oral chemotherapy drugs that can be tens of thousands of dollars a year or even more. The bill would require health insurance companies to cover the pill forms of the chemotherapy drugs the same way they cover other cancer drugs that aren’t pills. Wisconsin health insurance companies oppose the bill, arguing that it would limit their ability to design health plans and set a bad precedent. People are passionate on both sides of the issue,
Look in Monday’s paper for details about the . . .
Fitzgerald said, making it difficult to find a compromise. “A lot of people are kind of dug in on it,” he said. Fitzgerald declined to say whether he supported the bill, but in a later statement said he hoped an agreement could be reached next week. But Democratic Sen. Jon Erpenbach, who supports the proposal, said Republican senators are blocking it because of pressure from the insurance industry. “They’re actually standing in Jon the way of Erpenbach somebody who is desperately sick and their medicine,” Erpenbach said. “I don’t know if you can get any more hurtful than that.” Fitzgerald said the bill has a majority of support in the 33-member Senate where Republicans hold an 18-15 advantage. But because a majority of the 18 GOP senators don’t back it, Fitzgerald said he wasn’t ready for it to be voted on. “We just don’t have consensus,” he said. The bill is sponsored by Republican Sen. Alberta Darling, of River Hills, making Fitzgerald’s decision not to schedule it for a vote all the more surprising. “She hopes to have a vote Alberta on the bill soon,” DarDarling ling’s spokesman Bob Delaporte said in an email. Time is running out. The Senate is only scheduled to be in session two more days, Tuesday and April 1, before adjourning for the year. Fitzgerald was able to block any attempt to vote on the bill Wednesday.
