Puppies were a plenty in Fitchburg Sunday at the Puppy Up! Walk. Local animal enthusiast and veterinary clinic hosted a team of 22 staff members, doctors, clients and their canine companions to participate in the first year at the event held at McKee Farms Park. The walk was organized by members of the Dane County Veterinary Medical Association to raise funds for comparative cancer research. Walks like this are being held across the country by the parent organization 2 Million Dogs Foundation, an organization founded by Luke Robinson who walked more than 2,000 miles with his two dogs to raise awareness for cancer research and treatment. More than 700 people walked on Sunday with
around 200-300 dogs. Total funds raised were estimated to be $84,000. The goal of these walks is both to raise money and awareness of the importance of comparative oncology. Cancer has touched the lives of many people and their pets. Since cancers in cats, dogs, and people often are similar, advances made in cancer treatment in one species are used to enhance the treatment of cancer in another. Both human and canine cancer survivors participated in Sunday’s walk. 2 Million Dogs Foundation has donated funds for the study of breast cancer, bone cancer and bladder cancer to collaborative studies at institutions like Harvard, University of Pennsylvania, MIT, Animal Medical Center of New York, and Sloan Kettering.

ATTORNEYS
INVESTMENTS
Q. How can you turn your retirement vision into reality? A. A. For starters, try to calculate how much your retirement lifestyle will cost each year.
Once you’ve got at least a good estimate, you can then create an appropriate investment strategy. To bring your retirement vision to life, you’ll also need to deal with potential “roadblocks.” For example, health care costs typically rise as you move further into retirement, so you’ll need a reasonable portion of your assets to be allocated to investments with the potential for rising income. Finally, to fully enjoy your retirement, you’ll want to know you’re Brendon Diers, AAMS® protecting your grown children from financial and emotional burdens that could fall on them should you become incapacitated. You might want to consult with your legal advisor about Financial Advisor establishing a durable power of attorney, which allows you to appoint an agent to manage your financial affairs, make health care decisions or conduct other business for you during your incapacitation. Having your retirement vision come true can be a great feeling. Do whatever it takes to make it happen.
Q. Is a Limited Liability Company the Right Structure for Your Business? A. A limited liability company, or LLC, is a form of legal entity authorized by Chapter 183 of the Wisconsin Statutes
that shares attributes with both corporations and partnerships, but is not formally characterized as either one. Depending on your individual situation, an LLC may offer certain advantages in comparison to a sole proprietorship, partnership, or corporation. There are some additional costs and formalities associated with operating an LLC, including preparing and filing the articles of organization and maintaining separate records. However, compared to sole proprietorships and partnerships an LLC will generally make it easier to raise capital and transfer ownership interests to third parties without disturbing business operations. Similar to shareholders of a corporation, LLC members are generally not responsible for company Attorney debts except to the extent that they have contributed capital to the LLC. This limited liability attribute of LLCs is often seen Clarke Sugar as a significant advantage over sole proprietorships and partnerships. In comparison with a corporation, however, an LLC requires far fewer legal formalities. Finally, there are certain tax attributes that are important to consider. Generally, the LLC entity is disregarded for tax purposes with any profits and losses passing directly to its members; whereas corporate earnings are taxed both at a corporate level as well as at the shareholder level upon distribution. Evaluating and selecting the right business structure is an important step in starting your business.

Q. When is a good time to sell my house?
Keith & Kinsey Schulz Real Estate Team
A. NOW! Activity really picked up over the last several months. Houses on the market don’t last long, they are selling fast. Good inventory has been hard to find, multiple offers situations are becoming more common, and everybody in the real estate industry seems to be swamped. PRESCHOOL
Q. Our family dog died and my four year old is very upset. Is it a mistake to have family pets?
A. Family pets teach children many things. Most importantly,
they can be treasured companions and deep relationships develop between children and their pets. Children can also learn about kind treatment of animals, gentle touches, responsibility and basics of care and feeding. The death of a pet is an emotional experience but it can also introduce children to the “circle of life” and can be an opportunity to teach children to cherish good memories after a death has occurred. Getting a pet is a commitment however, and families should give careful thought to what is involved before adding a pet to a household.

standard for replacement of missing teeth, especially the single tooth. A dental implant is an artificial root, sometimes looking similar to a screw that is placed into the jawbone to anchor a tooth. An abutment and crown (cap) is made to connect to this “root.” Dental implants have many advantages and few disadvantages. Implants are immune to tooth decay and erosion. Implants are exceptionally strong and have very high success rates. Implants can replace teeth in places that dentists have had few options in the past. Some disadvantages to implants include, longer treatment times (largely due to healing), restrictive insurance coverage and limitations due to inadequate bone. There are some medical restrictions related to implants, but these are very rare. If you have a tooth or teeth that you miss or need to replace or have been told in the past that there were no options to replace, contact a dentist at Associated Dentists at 848-4000. You may have options now!

SENIOR CARE
Q. How can seniors avoid getting food poisoning? A. Approximately 76 million Americans get food poisoning, or foodborne illnesses,
each year, and of those about 5000 die. Foodborne illnesses are caused by eating foods that are contaminated with bacteria, protozoa, or other microbials and viruses. When seniors get sick, they are sicker longer with more acute symptoms. Here are some tips for seniors and their caregivers on safe food handling and preparation. 1) wash cooking items in hot soapy water 2) rinse fresh fruits and vegetables 3) Separate raw meat/chicken/fish from ready-to-eat foods 4) use separate cutting Stephen Rudolph FACHE, CSA board for raw meats, fruits and vegetables 5) thaw frozen foods in the refrigerator. 6) refrigerate food promptly after eating. 7) always follow “sell by” and “use by” dates. HEATING/COOLING
Q. How efficient is my air conditioner, and should I consider replacing it?
A. The efficiency of your air conditioner is based on its SEER rating and
Dave Kaltenberg
how well it has been maintained. Air conditioners that are 15 years old or more probably fall into the 6-8 SEER rating range. A new 13-16 SEER air conditioner could give you savings in the 35-60% range over your existing unit. Even air conditioners installed as little as 5 years ago could cost 20-35% more to operate than today’s models. Any repairs needed in addition to energy savings may justify replacing even these units. For these and any other questions on your HVAC system, contact Dave at OK Heating & Air Conditioning.

PHYSICAL THERAPY
Q. What is a “TMD” ? A. The Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) is formed at the location where the maxilla (upper jaw) and
Susan Armstrong, MPT Physical Therapist
mandible (lower jaw) meet. There are 2 TMJs (one located in front of each ear canal) that work as a modified ‘ball and socket’ joint to allow the jaw to open and close. These joints work hundreds of times a day (more than any other joint in the body), while a person is talking, biting, chewing, and yawning. Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) occurs when one or both TMJs are not functioning properly. This can occur due to muscle imbalance, repetitive use injury, direct trauma, stress or with cervical spine issues. Common symptoms of TMD include: pain with jaw movement or with palpation of the joints, locking of the jaw, upper neck pain, headaches, ear pain (similar to an earache), grinding, crunching, or popping sounds with jaw movement, dizziness, fullness of the ear, and ringing in the ear. At Stellar Rehabilitation, a trained therapist would provide an individualized treatment program including exercise, stress management, the use modailites (ultrasound or infrared therapy) to help speed the healing process and myofascial release/manual techniques to allow the TMJ to return to proper alignment and function. CHIROPRACTOR
Q. My 10 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with a slight scoliosis. Is there anything that can be done to help correct this?
A. The cause of scoliosis is not completely understood, however, there are chiropractic and massage
therapy treatments that work to facilitate a more normal spinal development. Scoliosis is a condition seen in 3-5 of every 1,000 children and affects girls between the ages of 10-16, seven times that of boys of the same age. Chiropractic treatment involves adjustments of the vertebrae that are turning or twisting, essentially assisting the bone in a more normal developmental process. In conjunction with Jill Unwin, this chiropractors will prescribe certain strength and flexibility exercises. These exercises are designed DC, CCEP to strengthen the weak side of the spine and create flexibility on the tight side of the spine. This helps create a better balance in the muscles, which again helps in the spinal development. Massage Therapy can also be beneficial for scoliosis. Massage Therapy works to release the muscle on the inside or concave side of the spine in order to reduce the tension of the muscles that are pulling the spine. Early detection is key to preventing years of suffering, however if a scoliosis is determined you must act immediately to help hold the line on its development. If you have concerns about your child’s spine please contact us for a free screening.

National FFA Officer Workshop At right are FFA members Blair Wermouth, Erica Norman, Brooke Felsheim, Jenna Butler and Julia Butler and Justin Blackburn participating in a workshop. National FFA officers from around the country did workshops including this one where the students passed a tennis ball as fast as they could -- but had to pay attention to the words like “love” written on the ball. The lesson was not to pay attenion to the “little stuff.”

Q “ “
uotes from FFA members about their experience at the day-long FFA National Officer Workshop.
Setting up everything was really fun and meeting the National FFA Officers was fun because they’re all really cool.” - Keely Johnson I absolutely had a blast getting to know all the National FFA Officers! They are true leaders and role models to me. I enjoyed the opportunity to talk and learn from their experiences. I am so glad I had the chance to host them and very lucky that I am still in contact with them today!” - Elizabeth Sarbacker

Veteran: Joined U.S. army may need like V.A. hospitals. “A lot of women will say they aren’t a veteran, but they did serve,” said Rohan, who served in the U. S. Army from 1974-76. Through education and setting an example, she hopes to change that. Rohan has been a part of the American Legion in Sun Prairie for around 30 years, but moved just outside of Verona near Hawk’s Landing three years ago. Her son and daughter-in-law live here, and she plans to join the Verona Legion. She is an active member of the Legion who last month was appointed as the Chairman of The American Legion Nation Veterans Employment and Education Commission, a volunteer position appointed by the National Commander of The American Legion. Through this position, she wants to help educate military personnel and veterans about how to translate their resumes from military to civilian to assist with job hunts. In addition, she’ll work to redefine educational benefits for personnel defined in the bill commonly referred to as the G.I. Bill. That same leadership is how this small-town girl from Iowa found her spot among a male-dominated workforce after joining the service after high school.
Rohan was one of the first women in her class to study a field that had just been opened up to women during her time of service. She worked in communication and electronic repair, including doing inventory for electrical parts for transistor radios. Rohan was handy in electrical work because her father was an electrician and she also enjoys accounting, which translated well to the field, she said. Rohan finished as the top in her class and was made a course instructor after completing training. Her first three months, she wasn’t doing much teaching, but when she finally got into the classroom, she enjoyed being an example for others. The experience gave her deep respect for the teaching profession, she said. Rohan left the service after two years to accompany her husband, whose service brought them to the Sun Prairie area in 1978. Rohan will go to Washington, D.C., this month to start training for her new position at the Legion. While she works to educate veterans, she encourages everyone to take a moment to listen to a veteran’s story that isn’t in the history books. “I hated history when I was a kid, but I’m meeting people and I’m hearing their stories,” she said. “Oh man, the things they went through…”

After basic training at Fort McClellan in Alabama, she went to Fort Lee in Virginia where she lived in one of the first co-ed barracks. This is also where she met her husband, who shot and produced Army training videos. Rohan went into the service after high school because serving her country “made sense,” plus she wasn’t exactly sure what she wanted to do career-wise. She grew up in an area of Iowa that described as similar to Verona – “Hometown, USA,” and said the army helped her “grow up fast.” “I was very naive,” she said.

CROSS PLAINS COMMUNITY BANK
SEPTEMBER 2013

Loan processor Kendra O’Brien tries out her new computer in the new bank’s spacious lobby. The bank is built with an open concept that makes extensive use of outside light and affords those inside views of the scenery on Cross Plains’ east side. Photos by John Donaldson
dedicating the new structure on Cross Plains’ east side. “We want to be a fantastic neighbor. That’s our main goal. We’re really trying to make the right statement.” When the bank first approached the village about constructing a banking facility in the village, its identity was for a while kept under wraps. Once the secrecy was lifted, however, it was hard to miss. Commuters each day watched the stately structure at 2615 Westview Court, just off of USH 14 as it becomes Main Street, grow from the ground up. According to Senior vice-president John Griffin, the bank went up pretty much as expected. “The weather got us behind a little bit early on, but other than that, it’s been pretty smooth,” he said. Now the bank greets motorists approaching the village from the east. After the “Welcome to Cross Plains” sign, it is the first thing people see. “People have been great,” said Griffin. “They keep asking how it’s going.” Now the can come see for themselves; the bank opened for business on Monday. Upon entering the spacious lobby, customers can easily find their way to teller windows, the loan processing area, four offices and a conference room. According to Griffin, all of the employees in the new bank are local Upstairs, unfinished space is waiting for a tenant. Griffin encouraged anyone interested in leasing space to contact him at the bank. Once it is determined who will be there, workers will return to See COMMUNITY, page 3

Cross Plains Community Bank is open for business JOHN DONALDSON News Publishing Co. Middleton Community Bank president Dave Fahey says that while the new Cross Plains Community Bank is in a new building and is going to be run with some new employees, it is not really in a new market. “One of the main reasons we built it is we have so much business already established in Cross Plains,” said Fahey last Friday after the ribbon-cutting noon ceremony See COMMUNITY, page 2 Village, county and state officials came to the site of the new Cross Plains Community Bank Friday to help cut the ribbon for the new facility, which opened for business Monday. When to lease a car and when to buy
By Angie Hicks www.angieslist.com
Around this time of year, as automakers start rolling out new models, you may be tempted to refresh your ride. When it comes to getting a new — or new to you — car or truck, you’ve got three options: buying new, buying used or leasing. Leasing basics: The most basic fact to know about leasing is that it’s essentially a long-term rental of a vehicle, usually a brand-new one. A typical lease lasts for 36 months, though some dealerships offer them for one to five years. Monthly lease payments can range from $160 to well over $1,000, depending on a vehicle’s make and model. Whether leasing is a good option for you depends on a variety of factors, including how many miles a year you tend to drive and how long you want to keep a car. Reasons to lease: In talking to auto dealers who are highly rated by members of Angie’s List, our researchers found that these are among the top reasons to lease: » Lease payments are generally lower than loan payments. » Because most leased cars are brand-new or newer, the driver gets to enjoy the latest features and technology. » Leasing agreements may include more coverage under the factory warranty than what a buyer would receive. Also, because leased vehicles tend to be new or newer, maintenance costs are lower than pur-
chased cars that are driven beyond their warranty time frames. Reasons to buy instead: Among reasons that leasing might not be your best option: » At the end of the lease agreement, you won’t own the car. However, if you like the vehicle, you may decide to buy it when the lease ends. » Lease agreements may cap annual mileage at a typical 12,000 miles, so they aren’t a good idea if you drive more than the average driver. Driving more miles than allowed on the lease can result in a fee of 10- to-25
Be sure to read and fully understand your lease agreement before you sign it. Also, ask the dealership about gap insurance coverage
cents a mile. » If the leased vehicle receives more wear than is permitted within the agreement, you may owe the dealer money to make up the difference. Before you lease: If you decide to explore the option of leasing, be sure to work with an established, reputable dealer that can also provide maintenance and repair service. Ask friends and family for recommenda-

textures (touch) and the ears crinkle (hearing). Plus, Bella is made of completely nontoxic materials, so your baby can gum and gnaw away to his heart’s content. Lamaze color codes all their products to make it easy to find the perfect toy for your child’s age and developmental range. Giggle Bunny Ball is another great toy for babies and has been tested safe for
birth on up. Like Bella, Giggle is colorful, crinkly and multi-textured. But what sets her apart is that she giggles when shaken (and yes, there’s an on/off switch). Bella Bunny retails for $16 and Giggle Bunny is $10, both at http://tomy.com
Jelly Bean Racer (Little Tikes)
If you’ve got a budding Kyle Busch or Danica
Patrick on your hands, he or she will love these racers, which really do look like giant jelly beans on wheels. They come in four colors and sport two antennae-like “handles” to keep kids secure on top. By using their feel to pedal or push off the ground and to steer, kids can cruise around. Best for kids 12-24 months. Retails for $20 at www. littletikes.com

hearing is worsening and it is a struggle for me to hear during my daily meetings at work. I fear if I get hearing aids, others Q Myfrequent will then know of my problem and I would rather keep that private.
Your dilemma is common. But if someone wears glasses, do you feel any ill feeling toward them or feel they are somehow lessened for improving their vision? Of course not. Improving ones hearing or vision to the best it can be allows us to continue our active lives and not miss a step. It shows you are wanting to continue to participate in life to the fullest and you value your health. Hearing aids are better and smaller and more discreet than ever before which makes them easier for some to wear. But even if someone sees your hearing aids, who cares! Wearing them says you value all life has to offer… and you want to be able to hear it!

ADULT DAY CARE
Placing a child with autism into a group of typical peers does not usually result in improved social interaction. The child must first learn age appropriate games as well as social behaviors including attending to and imitating others, sharing and taking turns. During peer play sessions, peers are taught to persist in getting the child’s attention, respond to initiations and demonstrate how to play the game. Initially therapists guide play dates with activities comprised of those our child has learned to play. Therapists prompt responsiveness, mutual requesting and commenting. Optimally, peer play begins around age 4 and continues for 6 months at 6 to 8 play dates per week. GENERAL DENTIST

I have been having knee pain for some time, what should I do?
If your knee pain is the result of an acute injury, see your primary care physician. If your pain has been consistent for some time, and not the result of an injury, it can be a chronic condition like arthritis. Often ice, elevation, over the counter medications for pain relief, braces or knee sleeves, injections, and physical therapy for pain control and strengthening can be options. See your primary care physician for further assessment of your symptoms, as well as, for further care diagnostics and care options.

If I am not having any pain in my mouth, why am I Q told I have problems that need to be treated?
There are a few things to consider. First, if we are just finding a small cavity, we are better off treating the problem before it becomes larger or symptomatic. Some will feel “pain” to an extent and others will not. Everyone has different levels of pain threshold and how they perceive pain. Pain can range from mild temperature sensitivity to a spontaneous, sharp, throbbing sensation. Our goal in providing dental care is to prevent you from experiencing any pain. Prevention is key. Just think, high cholesterol does not hurt, but it is a big problem that requires treatment or care of some type. Another thing to consider is what type of treatment you are to have done. If there are any concerns, please address them with your dentist. It is crucial for you to understand what the problem is, how it’s going to be treated and what you can do to avoid future problems. Our goal for prevention also requires your own personal care and attention as well.

time in 27 years, after prosecutors disavowed the 1980s convictions that had put him and his two half brothers behind bars. “I’m just happy to be out, Hill said.
:, :, :,
NEW YORK — When three half brothers’ decades-old murder convictions were thrown out last month, they became a dramatic example of an idea spreading among prosecutors nationwide: “integrity units dedicated to double-checking convictions to determine whether justice was served. Over the last seven years, more than a dozen offices prosecutors’ across the country have created such staff teams or expert panels to review wrongful-conviction claims. The groups have agreed to revisit more than 4,900 cases, resulting in at least 61 convictions tossed so far, according to a tally compiled from interviews, prosecutors’ reports and news accounts. The initiatives are underway from New York City to Santa Clara County, California, and from Chicago to Dallas, fueled by growing concern about false convictions in a country that has averaged 68 exonerations a year since 1999. “What we’ve seen take place over the last 15 years has, I think, shaken most career prosecutors to their core. We had to respond to it, says Scott McNamara, district attorney in central New York’s Oneida County. His yearold conviction review committee is working on three cases so far. While advocates see the reviews as open-minded efforts to address possible injustice, some defense attorneys are cautious about embracing them. Some prosecutors have faced questions about whether they’re out to rethink convictions or just harden them. “It’s a catchy name to say you’re a conviction integrity unit, but you have to be able to answer some of these questions, said Barry Scheck, a co-founder of the Innocence Project, an exoneration advocacy group. Police and prosecutors have long aided some exonerations without having special conviction-review units, and many still do. But since Dallas DA Craig Watkins started such a unit in 2007, it has freed 33 people, reviewed more than 400 cases and inspired other prosecutors. Philadelphia and prosecutors Cleveland followed suit this April. Prosecutors acknowledge it’s an unusual role for them. “Why are we doing this? some Santa Clara County prosecutors asked at first, recalls Assistant District Attorney David Angel, who oversees the effort there. His reply: If the criminal justice system errs, “we have to be part of reversing that error. The scope and out-
comes of the reviews vary. Brooklyn prosecutors have disavowed seven murder convictions this year as they review more than 90 cases, while their colleagues in neighboring Manhattan have gotten four convictions dismissed in four years. Manhattan prosecutors have reassessed more than 150 cases and reinvestigated at least 12, but most claims “prove to be frivolous, DA Cyrus R. Vance Jr. said in 2012. After a DNA-focused review of more than 1,700 cases by the Colorado attorney general and Denver DA’s offices, one man was exonerated, though the work continues. Six convictions were overturned after the Detroitbased Wayne County Prosecutor’s office retested gun evidence in more than 400 cases — but all six defendants later pleaded guilty or were convicted at retrials. Prosecutors note that the reviews aren’t meant just to rehash. While reviewing convictions, “we also have to make sure we’re respecting the integrity of the jury system, says Michael Nerheim, the state’s attorney in suburban Lake County, Illinois. His year-old panel is poring over three or four cases. Appeals courts have been re-examining convictions for centuries, but prosecutors’ reviews can unearth evidence from authorities’ own files that never made it into the court record. DAs also have investigative tools that defense lawyers don’t, such as the ability to grant witnesses immunity from prosecution. And there can be “enormous advantage in approaching prosecutors before going into the adversarial realm of court, says Claudia Trupp of the Center for Appellate Litigation in New York. But other defense attorneys are skeptical. Lawyer Ron Kuby branded the Manhattan DA’s effort a “wrongful conviction perpetuation unit last month after prosecutors rebuffed a prisoner’s innocence claim in a notorious 1990 tourist killing. Prosecutors said they didn’t believe what he’d presented, including a statement from a former co-defendant who was cleared. review Conviction units in Brooklyn and ChiCook cago-centered County, Illinois, where reviews have led to six dismissals in two years, have faced complaints that they don’t move fast enough. Prosecutors have noted the difficulty of reinvestigating decadesold cases. Whatever the debate, it hardly mattered to Robert Hill when he left a court last Brooklyn month, free for the first

It’s in addition to a unit that reviews requests for various forms of post-conviction relief and grants about three or four a year. Santa Clara County district attorney’s office (San Jose, California): Launched as an experiment in the early 2000s, later disbanded and revived by a new administration in March 2011, the in-house program has reviewed over 100 cases and exonerated at least five people. Wayne County prosecutor’s office (Detroit): Amid concern about how a police lab had interpreted gun evidence, prosecutors reviewed thousands of cases and retested evidence from more than 400 cases from 2010 to 2013. Six convictions were overturned, but all six defendants later pleaded guilty or were convicted at retrials.

Prosecutors around the country have set up systems to assess claims of wrongful conviction in recent years, and they have reviewed thousands of cases and dismissed dozens of convictions so far. A look at some of the initiatives: Âť Baltimore City state’s attorney’s office: Created in 2012, an in-house conviction review unit has reversed the conviction of at least one person. Âť Brooklyn district attorney’s office (New York City): Formed in 2011 and expanded under a new administration this year, the conviction review process has prompted the dismissals of at least 10 cases, seven of them this year. A 10-prosecutor internal unit and an outside panel of defense lawyers are now looking at about 90 cases. Âť Cook County state’s attorney’s office (Chicago): An in-house review unit has disavowed at least six convictions since its 2012 formation. Âť Colorado attorney general/Denver district attorney’s offices: Setting out to determine whether new DNA testing might cast doubt on violent crime convictions, prosecutors and investigators reviewed more than 1,700 cases from 2010 to 2014. They ultimately concluded that only one case presented enough of an identity question to merit new testing; that defendant was exonerated. The work is to continue. Âť Cuyahoga County prosecutor’s office (Cleveland): It announced a new nine-person unit this April to review “legitimate claims of innocence.â€? Âť Dallas County district attorney’s office (Dallas): Formed in 2007, this two-prosecutor, one-investigator unit has reviewed more than 400 cases and cleared 33 people. Âť Lake County state’s attorney’s office (Waukegan, Illinois): A year-old panel of retired judges, retired prosecutors and defense lawyers — all from outside the county — has screened more than

CHILTON — Two people were taken to Calumet Medical Center on Sunday night after a driver failed to stop at a stop sign and crashed into a semitrailer. The Calumet County Sheriff’s Department responded to the crash at the intersection of State 57 and County E in the Town of Chilton around 9:10 p.m. Officers believe an 88-year-old woman traveling eastbound on County E ran the stop sign at State 57 and hit the side of the southbound semitrailer driven by a 50year-old man. Emergency personnel used the Jaws of Life to get the woman out of the car. Both drivers were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the sheriff’s department said in a statement. The crash remains under investigation.

NEENAH — The construction of an asphalt trail through Arrowhead Park at the south end of Little Lake Butte des Morts will be delayed by two months. The trail, which will link Herb and Dolly Smith Park with Gateway Plaza, now is scheduled for completion by the end of September. The finish date had been the end of July. “It’s disappointing because we know people are eager to use this trail, and we really want to get it done, said Eileen McCoy, Neenah’s director of parks and recreation. “But hot summer months are a very poor time to attempt to start the natural landscaping, which is extensive. Bids for the project totaled $368,812. MANITOWOC — Bail was set Monday at $100,000 cash for 39-yearold Brian E. Guilmette of Collins, who was arrested Friday in what authorities say is the largest seizure of marijuana originating from Manitowoc County. Investigators from the Manitowoc County Metro Drug Unit seized 78 pounds of marijuana — worth about $300,000 — and more than $35,000 cash after executing a search warrant Friday at Guilmette’s residence, Lt. Dave Remiker said at a press conference Monday. The drugs were packaged in plastic containers hidden in a crawl space and garage of the home; the money was found in plastic bags at the bottom of a chest freezer, he said. A table lined from end to end with stacks of bills and other tables topped with piles of marijuana sealed in plastic bags were displayed at the press conference. The investigation also yielded a rifle and shotgun, Remiker said. Authorities believe the marijuana was obtained from California. Some of the bags contained coffee grounds,

Police arrested a driver on suspicion of an eighth drunken driving offense on Saturday after he nearly struck a squad car. The driver, 54, was pulled over about 7:30 p.m. after he made a wide right turn onto Ninth Street from Racine Street and came close to a squad car stopped in traffic. The man was talking on a cellphone at the time. He explained to the officer that was trying to answer the phone, which made it difficult to control the car. He also told the officer his driver’s license was revoked based on a prior drunken driving conviction. The man was jailed on a probation hold. He’s serving a probation sentence that was ordered in a prior drunken driving case, police said.

Police have arrested two Appleton men involved in a fight Saturday that led to a stabbing. A 40-year-old man and a 21-year-old man are being held in the Calumet County jail pending charges after three people were injured in the incident, Appleton police said. A fight involving about 50 people broke out around 10:15 p.m. near Friendly Street and Juniper Lane, near Oneida Street and U.S. 441 in south Appleton, police said. Investigators spoke with three victims, including a 23-year-old man who required surgery for a significant cut on his hand. Two others were also injured: a 63year-old woman who was trying to separate the fighting parties and a 35year-old man who was treated for facial injures. Police are still investigating the incident. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact investigator Chue Thao at 920-832-5953. To information submit anonymously, text 274637 with the keyword APDTIPS at the start of the message.

OSHKOSH — One year ago,
Dan Eldridge was on the other side of the Moraine Park Technical College table. Eldridge was part of a mass layoff last year from Oshkosh Corp. and went searching for a new job. Instead of taking a 12week welding boot camp at Moraine Park, he landed a job as a welding lab aide at the college. On Thursday, Eldridge was administering virtual welding tests to his former co-workers who attended a job fair at the Oshkosh Convention Center. The event, the second one the company organized, brought 29 companies together to meet, interview, test, and, hopefully, hire some of the 536 manufacturing employees Oshkosh will lay off on June 27. The company said defense spending cuts prompted the reductions. “It’s nice how it worked out, Eldridge said. “For me, it was a blessing in disguise. It was tough having to prepare and send out resumes, but it’s what got me this job. It’s painful, but do it. Use the opportunity. If the companies that participated in Thursday’s job fair provide any indication, the affected employees will find no shortage of opportunities to pursue. Osh-

kosh Corp. Senior Director of Human Resources Katie Engleman said companies at the fair had 1,600 positions to fill in a variety of industries. “When we announced the layoffs in April, our phones blew up with companies interested in participating, Engleman said. “There’s a lot of opportunities out there and the people here seem very interested in hiring people with the skills our employees have. Oshkosh originally announced it would lay off 700 production employees, but Engleman said attrition and buyout offers have reduced the number of affected employees to 536. The cuts will reduce the company’s workforce to about 1,800 employees in Oshkosh, but Engleman said the company’s focus Thursday was helping the affected employees land on their feet. “We want to help them make the transition and find new jobs, she said.

sibly our congressional folks. The Neenah Common Council referred the resolution to the city’s Finance and Personnel Committee, following normal practice. The resolution could return for council consideration July 2. Neenah Alderman Christopher Kunz signed the Move to Amend petition. “I’m certainly for getting money out of politics and the election process, he said. The Menasha Common Council tabled the resolution earlier this month, effectively placing it on the November ballot. For a direct-legislation petition to be valid, it must be signed by a number of residents equal to at least 15 percent of the votes cast in the last gubernatorial election. Menasha’s petition had 978 certified signatures, exceeding the required minimum of 830. The petition was submitted with 1,112 signatures, but not all were accepted. “Some of them were Town of Menasha residents, and some were village of Harrison, City Clerk Debbie Galeazzi said. “Even though they have a Menasha mailing address, people don’t always know that they’re not located in the city of Menasha. Other signatures were discounted because they were illegible. Appleton’s petition contained 4,514 certified signatures, ex-

ceeding the required minimum of 4,096. Neenah’s petition contained 1,849 certified signatures, exceeding the required minimum of 1,404. Neenah’s Reinhardt said Move to Amend is fighting to reclaim democracy by limiting how much money can be contributed and spent in elections. He said corporate interests possess an inordinate amount of influence. “When you look at the amount of money that they can contribute, they pretty much control the government, he said. An amendment to the U.S. Constitution must be proposed either by a two-thirds vote of both houses of Congress or by a constitutional convention called by twothirds of state legislatures. The amendment must be ratified by three-fourths of the states. To date, 16 states have called for amending the Constitution. “We’re hoping that if enough communities in Wisconsin (pass the resolution), we can convince our state legislators to do the same, said Jeff Zdrale of Neenah. — Duke Behnke:920-993-7176 or dbehnke@postcrescent.com; on Twitter @DukeBehnke

Whereas, the Supreme Court’s decisions in Citizens United v. Federal Elections Commission and related case law allows unlimited spending to influence local, state, and federal elections; BE IT RESOLVED, that “We the People of the City of Appleton, Wisconsin, call for reclaiming democracy from the expansion of corporate personhood rights and the corrupting influence of unregulated political contributions and spending. We stand with the Move to Amend campaign and communities across the country supporting passage of an amendment to the United States Constitution stating: 1. Only human beings — not corporations, limited liability companies, unions, nonprofit organizations, or similar associations — are endowed with the constitutional rights; and 2. Money is not speech, and therefore regulating political contributions and spending is not equivalent to limiting political speech. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we hereby instruct our state and federal representatives to enact resolutions and legislation to advance this effort. Source: Move to Amend

Making fashion statements is important to Rihanna. The singer cemented her role as a fashion luminary earlier this month by receiving the 2014 Fashion Icon Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Her trophy was presented by Anna Wintour, the powerful Vogue editor, who said that with Rihanna, “the point is to be audacious — even jaw-dropping or button-pushing.

Rihanna speaks of her origins in Barbados, where “I didn’t have a lot of access to fashion. But, she said: “Fashion has always been my defense mechanism. Even as a child, she said she used to think: “She can beat me, but she can’t beat my outfit.

“I can compensate for all my weaknesses with my fashion, she said, adding: “There are rules, but rules are meant to be broken.
On a scale from one to Lady Gaga, how adventurous are you when it comes to fashion? If you consider yourself a style risk-taker, then I recommend the Ottoman Hands Hair Chain. It’s not your typical accessory, but it will definitely enhance your look and make a bold statement. This would pair well with a carefree bohemian-style outfit.
There was plenty of star power at the gathering of fashion leaders. And they were singing the praises of Rihanna, who wore a translucent outfit designed by Adam Selman that was embedded with more than 200,000 Swarovski crystals. The gown was accompanied by matching, elbow-length gloves and a glittering headscarf. Designer Posen called the pop star a fashion risk-taker who skillfully melds red carpet glamour with a rebellious streak. “She takes risks and she marches to her own drum and she knows what she likes, Posen told the Associated Press. Rihanna also has a great appreciation for designers, Posen added: “That’s why people love to dress her.
