The characteristics of Hong Kong, the unique and diversity culture seems drifting away by massive city development. Looking back from the past till now, Sheung Wan is still a district which holds a strong cultural relativism between eastern and western. This characteristic is representing one of the feature of Hong Kong. Also, the slope and staircases in Sheung Wan create a rare and special streetscape within urban area. This project aims to combine the physical and social characteristics of Sheung Wan, in order to create a down-to-earth, low-rise shopping mall.

THEME Diversity Cohesion SheungWan is an unique district with diversity culture. It mixed Eastern & Western culture which shown the history of Hong Kong. Also, the topography of SheungWan creates a special circulation which combine staircases & ramps. The physical and social characteristics of SheungWan are the keys of the theme and design objectives.
CONCEPT The design concept comes from the urban form of SheungWan, which have a lot of small elements (small blocks) to become a whole picture (streetscapes). At the social characteristics, the cultural diversity in Sheung Wan gives me the idea of “Mosaic”. I used boxes to study and develop the form of the building, starting from 3.5 meter grids, combine with the study of streetscapes in SheungWan. The level differences and in-out displacement of boxes created unique spaces for different functions. Urban Form

FUNCTIONS The historical tree was kept in the open courtyard and all functions are build around it. The program of the mall is to work as a platform to exchange ideas between artists and public. Workshops, exhibition space and shops are supporting young artist to build up their own brand. Similar buildings in Hong Kong are PMQ and JCCAC, which are quite successful with event such as flee market and exhibition.
Imitate complicated streetscapes of Sheung Wan, divide into small blocks with maximum facade area facing streets.
Follow a continued facade along circulation, yet separate the interior spaces.
A large courtyard facing Kau Yu Fong and Aberdeen Street for community use.
Maximize visual connections between different levels and areas.

Furniture are usually assembled at factory before it send to our house. On the contrary, the Flat Packed Furniture is assembled all by ourselves. The Flat Packed Furniture was first emerged in the late 1940s and early 1950s. It soon become popular among consumer who wants to save money, because they don’t have to pay for delivery cost. Also, some of the consumer want to get furniture inside a house through a relatively narrow opening, the flat packed furniture can definitely solve the problem. With the development of technology, the flat packed furniture is not only available on the IKEA shelves, we can get our own chair with CNC Milling Machine. Right now we are having an expanding open furniture movement. The design of furniture are shared globally on websites, for example Opendesk, sketchchair, Afab, etc. These websites have furniture designs that are based on Flat Packed furniture principle, which can easily be assembled. Also it can use CNC Milling Machine to produce the parts. We can always search for the design we love, and fabricated locally.

CONCEPT cradle!

In average, babies grow from 50 cm to 70 cm, from climb to sit and from cry to babble in only eight months. By then, the cradle will finish it mission. It is not just a pity for the babies to forget the fellow that accompanied the first eight months of their beautiful life, also for the parents and the environment. The cradle represents much significant movement for the families, there should be a way for it to continue witness the little masters and the families growth. By transforming from cradle to table set. The whole cradle design can transform to 2 chairs and one table to accompany the families in further future.

Densification is an inevitable part of city like Hong Kong, it deteriorates the living conditions of people on both social and health. This project aims to explore the opportunities to reinterpret the ultrahigh density mass housing block as a vertical extension of the city fabric and activity. Mong Kok is one of the most populated area in the world. The location of proposed site is the former Mong Kok market, which is situated at the corner between Argyle Street and Canton Road. Fresh market, stalls and restaurants are right next to the site with tones of food waste everyday. The theme of urban farming is proposed to transform the site into a community center as an enhancement of social interaction in local community and health conditions.

Hysan Place, City Farm, Time to grow, and a lot more... From the research of urban farming in highrise building of Hong Kong, there are some urban faming organizations that are operating for few years already. The location are mostly on the office rooftop of eastern area of Hong Kong, including Hysan Place (HP). This roof garden is open for staff only with some public tours occasionally. Some of the program were developed from this tour. It helped to build up the staff community by this farm.

In order to stay healthy, it is far not enough from healthcare, it have to improve by changing some unhealthy living habits in different aspects as well. There are four zones which can provide services for every age group users. Each functions are relates to healthcare and urban farming. Urban farming act as median to connect different uses and promote the idea of “Health”.

The architectonic of this building is using sculpting and displacement to manipulate with density and porosity. Density would be controlled by sculpting. First level would sculpted 5 strip, which means 25 cubes randomly from x axis, then next level would be another same position 5 more strip at y axis, finally z axis. On the other hand, porosity controlled by displacement. First level each strip would displace for half unit at random direction, next level would be 1 unit, and finally 2 unit.

There are mainly 4 zoning, each zone are separate by two levels of farming. There are a lot of spaces that are having visual connections between programmatic connected levels.
The public circulation by staircases goes to 16/F. It linked all the public farming spaces except rooftop. Since the healthcare center are relatively private area, therefore the public circulation do not cover to that zone.
There are rainwater harvesting system for the farming area. And the reuse water tank are also reusing the grey water as the one of the source for irrigation.
ENVELOP
There are direct sunlight from east and west directions. The public farming spaces are designed with double floor height. Therefore the sunlight can go to the deeper area of farming open spaces.
OPEN / CLOSE SPACE
Programmatic farming spaces are owned by the programmatic space. Chinese medicine farming area, are owned by healthcare center.
PUBLIC CIRCULATION
ZONING
Pink area represents the porosity that are gradually decrease from lower zone to higher zone. It indicates that higher zone have more private space, and the open space for public are gradually decreased.
There are 3 types of spaces: programmatic space (close space), open space with cover and open space without cover. Most of the open space with cover are circulation spaces, open space without cover are farming spaces.
The solid and transparent organizations are follow by the functions, same functions have the same side of windows for several levels.

A RT GA L L ERY A Walk in the Woods Supervisor/ Mr. John Cheng Year/ 2016 Y4 SemB Project/ MLP (Group) Gallery (Individual) Building Type/ Art Gallery Location/ Hok Tsui Site Area/ 11058m 2 GFA/ 4000m 2 Hok Tsui is a quiet and relax location contrast to Hong Kong’s busy pace. It is so segregate that needs to take almost an hour from city to get to. Still, the natural environment with the view of sea and rocky shore are rare and stunning that leads lots of visitors stop-by during weekends. Hok Tsui acts like a backyard of Hong Kong that gives people a break by its natural environment. The artist village aims to provided a segregate environment from city and opportunities for artist to exchange ideas and creativity boosting. By providing a pleasant space for artist to have their own creativity space, artist are setting up exhibition inside village in return. It can attract public to this backyard and enjoy its beautiful and comfortable environment.

Urbanism in Hong Kong is not only develop in horizontal axis but also vertical. Hong Kong street network combines in three-dimensional space, as in ground level connected with footbridge and underground passageways. It is possible to walk from Shun Tak Centre in Sheung Wan through Central and Admiralty to the edge of Wan Chai without leaving the continuous elevated walkways which interconnected with malls and office lobbies. It is a unique, complex and chaotic elevated street configuration in Central of Hong Kong. To evaluate the effects of elevated walkway system, this research aims to compare the difference between the ground level centrality with or without elevated walkway system.

URB A N PLAN City Smart Box Box Box, Slab Slab Slab Supervisor/ Gilles Retsin & Lei Zheng Year/ 2017 Summer Location/ Shanghai, China Project/ Urban plan (Group) Initial Ideas & Buildings (Individual) This project resonates with the Metabolists project - which tried to harness new fabrication techniques such as prefabrication to radically reinvestigate the way we build. A closed definition of a tower as a box, and remains an open-ended, adaptive whole. The Metabolists cherished the high-density urban environments typical for Asian cities. Also, it investigate how programme can be a means to dissolve the dread of the repeated box. Even if our tower is a mere stack of boxes, every box could contain another surprising and exciting programme - which makes us forget about where we actually are at.

Prof. ROSSINI, Francesco 2017 Year 5 Sem A To Kwa Wan, Hong Kong Collective Housing Project
To Kwa Wan - a place seems so different from other locations in Hong Kong. While street shops are quietly disappeared and replaced by shopping malls and supermarket, most of them in here haven’t changed a bit in decades. It seems primitive and raw as it was in the 80s. The great variety of retail and services - fresh food from the market, daily goods from staircase store, tailor shop, satisfied all the needs in this few blocks of community, none of these shops are chain stores. Most of the shopkeepers are at the same time residents living nearby. They run these store as livelihood through generations. They spent most of their lives here. The consistency is keeping this district a confluence and distinctive vibe. Shopkeepers and neighbors are intimate. This relationship spread to the whole area; neighbors offer helps to each other. The barrier of strangeness shattered then built up connections to one another. The tight cohesion in the community is the core of this district.

Everyone have their own place, with both tangible and intangible things attached to it, like their childhood memories or the smell of trees mixed in the breeze. The identity of Fu Tei Au Village is not only reflecting its ecological environment but its historical and cultural texture. It creates their own atmosphere which is unique and distinctive as their place. One of the thing that makes Fu Tei Au Village as place is the journey to the innermost space. Innermost space is the most personal and private space, and also the space individuals remain and find serenity. Through architecture, people are allowed to appreciate the simplest form of a space by senses. It amplify the innermost space’s significance through the depth of space. Individuals can dwell and meditate in sync in the journey.

Living in city, home is a space to rest instead of dwell. Time drifted away without conscious; on the contrary, the concept of time is reminded by natural environment. The way they dwell is the humblest way to experience the boundless nature.

This thesis aims to examine the relations between physical form and sound, and the effects of human behavioural in movement patterns in auditory experience. It also intends to explore the design potential of acoustic environment. Auditory and visual sensation generate the indefinite, overlapping and contradictory boundary. The integration of mental and physical senses strengthened the cohesion and importance of our existential experience. The new type of architecture would be acting as experiential installation and focus on the connection of architecture and self.
