Elma: State runner-up Prosser knocks Eagles out of title contention Continued from B-1

Even with the added help, the Mustangs owned the rebounding edge 41-32, with 24 of those on the defensive end to thwart Elma scoring opportunities. The game was tight throughout, but Elma had its best success when Jones was off the floor. Aside from her offensive production, her presence on defense, including three blocks and numerous challenges helped force the pace of the game. At halftime Elma did own the lead at 30-28, but then as the third quarter began Jones and Prosser took the upper hand. Following a pair of Thomas free throws to make it 32-30, Prosser went on a 10-0 run. Jones had half of those points, including a three-point play, to make it 40-32. Elma closed the gap to one at 42-41 with a Meister bucket with 1:31 left in the third, but Prosser was able to extend it back out to nine at 54-45 with 5:02 left in the game. From there Colard and Thomas both scored three points in a 6-0 run to make it 54-51 with 3:17 left. Prosser’s Tayisha Hunt hit a free throw, and Jones hit a short jumper at the 2:10 mark to make it 57-51 before Thomas put back a rebound at 1:48, setting the score at 57-53. A Hunt bucket a minute later left Elma down 59-53. A wild pass with 35 seconds left stripped the Eagles of a crucial scoring opportunity, and Helen Peterson stepped to the free throw line for the Mustangs and knocked

down three shots to solidify the win. Colard added a late trey with 22 seconds left, but Prosser escaped 62-56. Now out of the running for the title, Elma began to work towards a fourth-place spot. Standing in the way was Ellensburg, the school the Eagles defeated 52-46 last season to secure fourth place. Through two days of the tourney, Elma’s 65 points in the win over Squalicum held as the high total for any game — that was, until Friday, when Ellensburg needed 74 to knock off Elma 74-64. Even with Thomas and Colard going for 29 and 27 points respectively, Ellensburg had an answer in the form of a trio of double-digit scorers led by Andrea Bland’s 29 points, bolstered by 19 from Deaira Gordon and 13 from Kim Kelly. At halftime, the Bulldogs were up 38-27, but steadily the Eagles chipped away at the lead until it was zero following a Meister lay-in with 4:56 left in the game. Gordon then hit a trey and a midrange jumper to put Ellensburg up 60-55 before a Colard lay-in set the score at 60-57 with three minutes left. Bland cut to the hoop for a lay-in and hit two free throws and Kelly hit a three-pointer to put the Bulldogs on top 67-57 with just over a minute left. Thomas nailed a trey to cut it to 67-60, but Bland and Kelly combined for three free throws to push the lead back out to 10. DeMar added a free throw with 37 seconds remaining, but four Gordon conversions from the free throw line

pushed the game out of reach. A Colard trey with 0:02 left closed the scoring at the final of 74-64. Elma left the tourney with an overall record of 20-6.

Closing out their prep careers — Thomas, Colard, Thompson and Blanchard are joined by Lindsey Levanen as Eagle seniors. Levanen was sidelined all season following

knee surgery. Also out for the tourney was sophomore starter Dezi Wheeldon, who sustained a knee injury in the district championship game against River Ridge.
