Pennies for Patients enjoys a big kickoff. The Housel Middle School (HMS) eighth-grade Leadership class kicked off the school’s annual Pennies for Patients campaign on Monday, Feb. 1. The campaign is a competition between eighth period classes to raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Washington. The Leadership students would like to invite the community to the seventh and eighth grade girls basketball game on Thursday, Feb. 4. At the seventh-grade B squad halftime and the eighth grade A squad halftime, the leadership students will be doing a Dash for Cash to raise money for the fundraiser. Game time starts at 4 p.m. There are volunteer opportunities for parents wanting to get involved in this fundraiser. Please contact Michelle Hall at HMS (786-1732) with any questions.

Prosser Mustangs struggle in weekend games By Rey Pascua

EPHRATA – The goal in sports during times of adversity is to find the positives. Prosser had opportunities to do that this weekend as the Mustangs split in their weekend schedule of CWAC league basketball games. The Mustangs won over Quincy 61-47 on Friday, and lost 93-37 at Ephrata on Saturday. Prosser made it count in the second and fourth quarters in the victory over Quincy on Friday evening. The home team scored 18 points in each of those frames, and they helped to build to the final 14point victory. The Mustang’s inside game was the key against Quincy. Kippy

Brown, Zane Zocher, and Hazzard worked the boards and made shots inside the key. Dominic Garza also was effective from the perimeter. Brown led Prosser in scoring with 23 points, while Zocher and Garza also scored in double figures, with 10 and 17 points respectively. Jay Cedergreen had 14, and Luke Grigg 12 to lead Quincy in scoring. Prosser vs. Ephrata The Ephrata Tigers proved to basketball fans why they are the third-ranked team in the state with the resounding win on their home court. Prosser played reasonably respectively in the first and final quarters against the Tigers. Use those two frames, and the Mustangs lost only 36-23.

Unfortunately, the middle two quarters gave the home team a decided difference of 57-14, as Prosser was held to single digit scoring in those two quarters. WSU recruit Patrick Simon was effective from the start, unlike in Ephrata’s visit to Prosser in December. The 6’9” post scored 37 points and grabbed 16 rebounds. Beau Hazzard led Prosser with 8 points, and Pilot scored 7 points. Ross Buchert and Novik also scored in double figures, with 22 and 14 points, respectively. Prosser (4-8, 4-10) is in seventh place in the CWAC league. The Mustangs play host to Ellensburg and Selah this weekend, with both games starting at 5:45 p.m.
